'Saying it publicly is blowing minds' – Alexi Lalas applauds Mauricio Pochettino's vocal support of MLS amid skepticism by some about the league's relative quality

Lalas said the Argentine coach's comments about MLS, and clear enthusiasm, is in contrast to that of some American fans

USMNT Mauricio Pochettino included 12 MLS players on his squad for the upcoming September friendlies, saying of the league, "Sometimes the MLS – under my assessment – maybe is more competitive than some leagues in Europe."

FOX Sports analyst Alexi Lalas said he had conflicting emotions about the coach's comments on the domestic league.

“There is a part of me that is so happy to hear Mauricio Pochettino say this,” Lalas said on his State of the Union podcast. "Saying something like this… and saying it publicly is blowing minds. Because as we know, the MLS Derangement Syndrome out there shows no sign of abating. And so it makes me happy that he is being this positive about MLS and about MLS’ quality and about American players, relative to the national team that play in MLS. “

Lalas also found it disheartening that the Argentine demonstrated more enthusiasm for MLS than many American soccer fans do.

"I'm sad because our US men's national team coach – by the way, an Argentinian – has more excitement and respect and positivity towards our domestic league, Major League Soccer, than many Americans," he said. “It continues to be strange to say that now I know that people are getting out their tinfoil right now and saying, 'Oh, MLS quotas. And he's just saying what he has to say. And this is part of the deal.'

"No, no. I think he has proven in his short time, Mauricio Pochettino truly does believe that there is quality in MLS, that there is value in MLS.”

AdvertisementWHAT LALAS SAID

The former USMNT defender admitted that some skeptics will be critical of the comments.

“I just love the fact that he is saying this and the reaction is what you should take note of," he said. "Those that are up in arms and feel that he's gaslighting or feel that he's not being truthful in what he is saying because it goes against what they have said over the years and what they believe over the years. But it's Mauricio Pochettino saying that.

"And now you know, they'll come for him and they'll scream and yell. But I love this discourse. I love the fact that he is putting it out there. And this is not the first time he has talked since the moment he got to the national team about how he doesn't care where you play. He cares that you play well and that he is standing up for MLS… But I think there's ultimately this is this is good stuff from Pochettino. And I think he has put his money where his mouth is when it comes to MLS players.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pochettino's positive stance toward MLS represents a significant shift from previous narratives surrounding the USMNT, where European-based players have traditionally been prioritized.

Titans in last-chance saloon vs injury-ravaged CSK

Match details

Gujarat Titans (10th; W4, L7) vs Chennai Super Kings (4th; W6, L5)
Ahmedabad, 7.30pm IST (2pm GMT)

Big picture

Chennai Super Kings right now are Gujarat Titans from the start of the season. They have pretty much lost their entire pace attack, which has been crucial to their challenge for a place in the playoffs. Matheesha Pathirana, Mustafizur Rahman and to a lesser extent Deepak Chahar had done such a good job that the CSK quicks are the ones with the best economy rate in the middle overs (8) and the second-best at the death (10.43) in IPL 2024.GT had a bowler that they relied on just as heavily. Mohammed Shami. But he’s been out, recovering from ankle injury, and then surgery. In his absence, the team has looked at various options. Azmatullah Omarzai. Spencer Johnson. Josh Little. But nothing has worked. Fast bowlers are a point of difference, especially those with slingy actions or supreme new-ball skills or hard-to-pick variations. And when they go missing, it can be difficult to cope.Related

GT haven’t really been able to. A loss on Friday will end their tournament. CSK have to win. They are better placed to make a run at the playoffs and the final, which happens to be taking place at the very ground where someone said he wanted to end his career. Wouldn’t that be poetic?

Previous meeting

Back in March – seems ages ago, doesn’t it? – the re-match of the 2023 final fell CSK’s way with Shivam Dube hitting a whirlwind half-century and their fast bowlers refusing to let GT find a hero from out of nowhere like they used to do. 206 for 6 comfortably beat 143 for 8.

Team news and Impact Player strategy

Gujarat Titans
GT have tried 22 players, joint-most for the season, without really settling into a winning combination. Their success seems to depend heavily on Gill scoring runs at the top and Miller being there to finish. Their impact player strategy is likely to be a straight swap between Sai Sudharsan and Sai Kishore or Sandeep WarrierLikely XII: 1 Shubman Gill (capt), 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 , 4 M Shahrukh Khan, 5 David Miller, 6 Vijay Shankar, 7 Rahul Tewatia, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Mohit Sharma, 10 Noor Ahmad, 11 Josh Little/Azmatullah Omarzai, 12 Chennai Super Kings
CSK have repeatedly said they aren’t concerned with Ajinkya Rahane’s form, trusting in the fact that experienced players know how to get out of ruts. He has been part of their impact player strategy as well and will probably swap in and out for Simarjeet Singh.Likely XII: 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad (capt), 2 , 3 Daryl Mitchell, 4 Shivam Dube, 5 Moeen Ali, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 MS Dhoni (wk), 8 Mitchell Santner, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Tushar Deshpande, 11 Richard Gleeson, 12

In the spotlight

Rashid Khan’s overall IPL economy was around 6.3 runs per over until IPL 2022. Since last year though, he has been going at 8.2 runs per over. Some of this has to do with his home base shifting, some is the result of teams being more open to take risks against him thanks to the impact player rule. He’s also had to bowl in the powerplay a lot more than he’s used to. And he came into this season fresh off of back surgery. Even the greats falter when the odds are stacked that high but you know what else the greats do? They recover and they hit back.Simarjeet Singh has quickened up. This is based on only three overs’ worth of evidence in a game where the opposition was already four down when he came on to bowl but still he left a very clear mark – particularly on Ashutosh Sharma, whose body he pelted with a couple of well-directed short deliveries. Pace, of course, isn’t everything. Especially at CSK, who prefer their bowlers being smart as well. Still, it shows that Simarjeet has been working hard behind the scenes and is hungry to succeed.Rashid Khan economy rate has risen to 8.2 runs per over since last year•Prathikhsha MK/BCCI

Stats that matter

  • There have been lots of similarities between GT and CSK and usually that tends to come off as a compliment. But this season both teams have had a fair bit of trouble navigating their innings. GT are scoring at 7.54 in the powerplay and 8 in the middle overs, making them the slowest team in the competition. CSK aren’t far behind with a run rate of 8.54 between overs 1 to 6 and 8.35 between overs 7 to 16.
  • Rahane and Wriddhiman Saha, who once excelled at taking advantage of the fielding restrictions, have struggled with strike rates of 123 and 118 this year.
  • Even Shubman Gill is suffering. From averaging 51 and striking at 152 in the first six games, his numbers have dropped to 13.4 and 102 in the next five.
  • Dube needs one more six to raise a hundred in the IPL.

    Pitch and conditions

When in Ahmedabad, you chase, because conditions get better for batting as the evening wears on and dew sets in. Thirteen of the last 21 IPL games there have been won by the team batting second and that puts a fair bit of pressure on Ruturaj Gaikwad to change his luck with the toss. The average first-innings total in this period is 188.

    Quotes

“He has enjoyed captaincy. It is something that takes time to really master. He has enjoyed it this season. He is a world-class player. I have no doubt that in the next three games, he is going to put in one or two really good performances, no doubt.”
Gujarat Titans batting coach Gary Kirsten does not feel captaincy has affected Shubman Gill’s batting

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Grealish made only 20 appearances in the Premier League last season, scoring one goal and registering one assist. He lost his place in the team behind Savinho and Jeremy Doku. He was also left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad. Since joining City in 2021 from Aston Villa for £100 million, he has scored 17 goals and provided 23 assists in 157 appearances across all competitions.

  • WHAT WAS SAID?

Grealish remains a "top player," but his competitors were stronger. Guardiola explained: "I only want the best for Jack – for him, his partner, his children, his family. I have never doubted his quality. Without him, we would not have won the treble back then."

La Liga president Tebas is not at all on board with the ongoing Club World Cup organised by FIFA, revealing that he will be working towards "eliminating" the tournament as the revamped version is a major threat to the "sustainability of football."

FIFA revamped the Club World Cup with a new format, which sees 32 teams from all confederations contesting in the group stages followed by knockout stages, much like the World Cup. Originally, the Club World Cup would be held right before the end of the year or right after the turn of the year, with just the winners of the premier continental competitions organised by each of the six confederations participating in the tournament.

Speaking at a football industry event, Tebas was asked how FIFA can revise the current Club World Cup. Tebas responded: "By eliminating it. My goal is to ensure there are no more Club World Cups, that's very clear to me."

He was then asked whether there was a way to make the tournament more compatible with the rest of the calendar. Tebas explained: "There are no dates. There's no need for yet another competition that moves money to a sector of clubs and players and comes from somewhere. There's no more money here; we have to maintain the ecosystem and eliminate it. Keep it as it was before, which was a weekend. There's no way, neither in terms of dates, nor economics, nor maintaining the sustainability of football."

There has been quite some criticism regarding the Club World Cup, which will now take place every four years. The competition is believed to take a toll on the players' physical conditions, with games scheduled at noon and 3pm kick-off times under the scorching heat of the USA sun. In fact, PSG boss Luis Enrique slammed the scheduling of the games following his side's 4-0 hammering of Atletico Madrid.

"Strong" Wolves star set to return vs Everton in one of three injury boosts

As Wolverhampton Wanderers prepare to square off against Everton in a game which could lift them a huge eight points clear of the drop, Vitor Pereira could welcome back as many as three key men in a major boost for those in the Midlands.

Wolves injury news

As things stand, Wolves are moving closer and closer towards confirmed safety with as many as five points separating themselves and the relegation zone in the final 11 Premier League games of the campaign. Their job is not yet done, however, and their next three games against Everton, Southampton and West Ham United are likely to be season-defining without star man Matheus Cunha.

The Brazilian turned a moment to savour into a moment of madness against Bournemouth last time out, scoring a wonder goal before seeing red and headbutting Milos Kerkez to receive his marching orders.

Following his second suspension of the season, Cunha could even miss further games which may also rule him out of a vital fixture against Ipswich Town.

As Pereira awaits the verdict on his star forward’s ban though, he will at least be relieved to have received a number of injury boosts. As confirmed by the manager, Wolves are set to welcome the returns of Emmanuel Agbadou, Rodrigo Gomes and Goncalo Guedes against Everton this weekend, whilst Marshall Munetsi and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde have also been passed fit.

Wolves now eyeing move for £120k-p/w player wanted by Bruno Lage at Benfica

Wolves are among the teams keen on signing a player who is set to become a free agent.

ByBrett Worthington Mar 6, 2025

Pereira told reporters: “Agbadou is ready to help us. Munetsi is ready, Guedes is ready, Rodrigo is ready, Bellegarde too. I’m very happy and positive for this game.”

Having missed the last three games, the return of January arrival Agbadou should prove to be a particular boost as Wolves look to end Everton’s four-game unbeaten run in the Premier League and return to winning ways themselves in doing so.

"Strong" Agbadou is returning at crucial time

With Cunha’s ban likely to stifle Wolves’ frontline, Agbadou’s return certainly comes at a key time for those in the Midlands. More than ever in the next three games or potentially more, they’ll have to fall back on their defensive work if they want to push more than the five points clear they currently find themselves away from the dropzone.

The 28-year-old, meanwhile, has an opportunity in his own right to cement a starting place in Pereira’s strongest side after starting games against Bournemouth and Fulham in the Premier League before an ill-timed injury stopped his momentum in its tracks.

Reims defender Joseph Okumu will certainly back his former teammate to do exactly that after telling GiveMeSport in January: “It was quite interesting to play alongside Emmanuel. We had quite a good time together. We played against each other in Belgium and then together for a while at Reims. He is quite strong and we had a great bond.”

Now at Wolves, Agbadou will be keen to show that strength and play his part in taking the club to safety under Pereira – starting with victory against Everton at Molineux this weekend.

He’s outscoring Delap: Ipswich must rue not signing PL star now worth £67m

This season has been something of a roller coaster for Ipswich Town fans.

Kieran McKenna’s side came into the campaign as one of the favourites to be relegated from the Premier League, and while they are in the drop zone, they have played far better football than most would’ve predicted.

Moreover, with reinforcements signed last month and safety just three points away, there is still every chance they’ll be able to beat the drop, especially if Liam Delap keeps up his impressive form.

However, survival would be even more of a possibility had the club been able to secure one of their prior transfer targets, who’s currently outscoring the young striker.

Liam Delap's season so far

Following Ipswich’s surprise promotion last season, it was clear that they were going to need more firepower to stand any chance of remaining in the division for more than a single campaign.

So, the club turned to Manchester City’s young prospect Delap, who had spent 23/24 on loan with Championship outfit Hull City, and even though he had only racked up a haul of eight goals and two assists in 32 games, the Tractor Boys decided to splash £20m to bring him to Portman Road.

It may have been something of a gamble at the time, but as we know now, it’s one that has more than paid off.

For example, in just 25 games under McKenna, totalling 1806 minutes, the 22-year-old marksman has scored nine goals and provided two assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.27 games, or every 164.18 minutes.

However, it’s not just the output that makes the Winchester-born star such an important player for the Suffolk side, as his ability to hold up the ball, bring others into play and occupy opposition defenders also makes him a real handful.

With that said, while Delap is having a brilliant season, he is being outscored by another Premier League star the club tried to sign in the past.

The Premier League star Ipswich tried to sign

With how brilliantly Delap has played for Ipswich this season, the player in question has to be someone pretty special to be outscoring him, and they most certainly are.

Morgan Rogers is one of the most exciting players in the top flight, but before he moved to Middlesbrough in the summer of 2023, McKenna told the press that the Tractor Boys were “certainly there or thereabouts to bringing him here a couple of times.”

Unfortunately for the Portman Road faithful, the Northern Irishman wasn’t able to get his man, and after impressing in the northeast, he earned a £16m move to Aston Villa, where he has gone from strength to strength.

For example, in just 33 appearances across the league, Champions League and FA Cup this season, the “magnificent” talent, as dubbed by former professional Stephan Warnock, has scored 11 goals and provided six assists.

Such an incredible tally more than justifies his new valuation of around £67m from CIES Football Observatory.

Ultimately, Ipswich have their own super talent in Delap, but we can’t help imagining that safety would be all but assured if they were able to get a hold of Rogers as well.
