'T20 is my game' – Sabbir Rahman

Sabbir Rahman started to punch the air every time he struck a six from the time he hit his fourth, during his record-breaking 122 against Barisal Bulls on Sunday. He described the celebration as a ritual that helps him “stay focused”.While it might seem unusual, it probably helps Sabbir. But closer to the truth is probably the fact that Sabbir was playing his favourite format. He said that he knows that a big innings is always around the corner when he is playing in T20s.”T20 is my game,” Sabbir said. “I got into the senior side in 2014 through T20s, and then also into the Test team. I believe it is my format, and I will make a big score, either today or tomorrow. But I am sure someone will break my 61-ball 122.”Shahriar Nafees, who made 63 for Barisal earlier in the game, said that Sabbir’s spectacular innings made him mull whether they could have made more than 192. He said that Sabbir’s wicket made the difference with Rajshahi unable to score the remaining 34 runs in the last four overs.”He is an outstanding talent, an asset for Bangladesh and has been doing well for the country. He is very fit, powerful and a big-hitter. When he was batting, I thought we would have needed 220-230 runs on the board. Sabbir was clearing the boundary quite easily. It is one of the best innings I have seen in this country. But we believed that it is important to win the game regardless of the margin. It wasn’t that easy to bat on that wicket unless you are set.”Despite his innings that beat Chris Gayle’s 116 – the previous highest individual score in the BPL – Sabbir said that winning the game would have made him happier. He said that the batsmen who couldn’t score the nine runs in the last six balls should have taken a different approach rather than trying to go for big hits.”We should have won both close games. I don’t know what our batsmen are thinking in the last over,” he said. “I think we have to be stronger mentally. We could have won the previous game by taking singles rather than going for sixes. I think nine runs off the last six balls was an easy equation.”

Leeds Handed Boost Over 47-Year-Old Manager Target

Leeds United have been boosted in their efforts to make Regis Le Bris their next manager, according to a fresh update regarding the situation.

Who is Regis Le Bris?

The Whites are busy working on nailing down their next appointment in the Elland Road hot seat, following a tumultuous 2022/23 campaign that culminated in relegation from the Premier League to the Championship.

Sam Allardyce was the latest individual to leave the post once the season reached its climax last month, with Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia also departing since the turn of the year. A host of names have been thrown into the hat when it comes to Leeds' potential new manager, including the likes of Steven Gerrard, Brendan Rodgers and Carlos Corberan.

Le Bris is another who has been linked with taking charge of the Whites, however, with the 47-year-old currently the boss of Ligue 1 side FC Lorient. A new update has now emerged that has handed Leeds a boost, after a recent report threw the move into doubt by suggesting he was on the verge of becoming manager of OGC Nice.

Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani.

What's the latest on Le Bris to Elland Road?

According to Foot Mercato [via Sport Witness], in what they describe as a new twist, there is not actually an agreement in place with Nice, acting as a clear positive for Leeds in their question to potentially bring in Le Bris.

Not only that, but journalist Mohamed Toubache-Ter took to Twitter to claim that the Frenchman has a €5m (£4.3m) release clause in his Lorient deal, which means he could arrive at Elland Road on the cheap:

"FYI, Regis Le Bris has a departure clause in his contract…it is for an amount of €5m!!!"

This is clearly good news for Leeds, should they see Le Bris as a primary candidate to come in this summer, in what is such a massive decision for the club. It is essential that they bring in the right man, following a number of false dawns since Marcelo Bielsa's exit, and the Lorient boss could certainly be an intriguing option.

Known for adopting a direct approach on the pitch – an article from The Analyst pointed out that "no side attempts fewer passes into the final third than Lorient with their 44 per game" back in October – Le Bris could make Leeds a tough team to come up against, although he has never won a trophy in his career which is a drawback.

That is something that Gerrard and Rodgers have achieved, for example – they have both won the Scottish Premiership, with the latter also tasting FA Cup glory with Leicester City – and it still feels more likely that the Whites will go with more of a high-profile name than take a gamble on Le Bris.

Rangers Want Transfer Soon Amid Links To £35k-p/w Option

Insider Dean Jones has exclusively revealed that Rangers want to sign a new goalkeeper "quite fast" as they eye up Jack Butland.

What are the latest Rangers transfer rumours?

With the Scottish Premiership now over, the Ibrox outfit can start planning for next season and they could be set for a busy summer.

Indeed, Michael Beale will have a big job on his hands as he looks to build a team in his image and keep Rangers as competitive as possible in the near future.

There has been plenty of talk now for some time about the need for a new goalkeeper with 41-year-old Allan McGregor on his way out.

Well, it seems that the Scottish outfit don't want to hang around on finding his replacement and may have already lined up a move for Butland.

Indeed, when speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, journalist Jones revealed what he's heard may happen at Ibrox.

He said: "Yeah, I think we're going to get some early clarification on this. I think Rangers intend to go ahead and sign a new goalkeeper quite fast.

"Butland [is] definitely one of the ones that they have looked into."

How much will Butland cost Rangers?

McGregor played the most minutes in between the sticks for Rangers this season, while Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie also featured at different points.

But with the preferred option departing, it makes sense for Beale to now target a new signing in goal as a priority to get sorted as soon as possible.

Still only 30 years old, Butland could arrive with his best years as a goalkeeper yet to come. However, he has not played a single game this term having started the season with Crystal Palace before heading on loan to Manchester United.

Even so, his contract expires in the summer and is reportedly happy to leave for free and join Rangers even if it means taking a pay cut to get the deal done.

At Man Utd, he was on £35k-p/w but if Beale and co could get that down – as well as not having to pay a transfer fee – this could be a more affordable deal.

Manchester United'sJackButland

Former Scotland goalkeeper Alan Rough has already approved the deal too, telling the PLZ Football Show (via Ibrox News): “No [no surprise], that’s the kind of goalkeeper they would go for.

“He’s been about playing at the top level down there. He comes into the category of yeah, I think it will be a good signing.

“He’s been hanging around the England set-up previously so he’s got something and when I saw his name I thought good choice.”

I won't be T20 captain anymore – Sammy

Darren Sammy, who led West Indies to two World T20 titles, has said in a video posted on his Facebook account that he won’t be the West Indies T20 captain anymore

ESPNcricinfo staff05-Aug-2016Darren Sammy, who led West Indies to two World T20 titles, has said in a video posted on his Facebook account that he won’t be the West Indies T20 captain anymore. In the video posted on Friday, Sammy said the chairman of selectors informed him via a phone call that they had “reviewed the captaincy of T20,” and he did not merit a place in the West Indies squad.”I got a call yesterday morning, it was probably 30 seconds, from the chairman of selectors telling me that they’ve reviewed the captaincy of T20 and I won’t be captain anymore of the T20 team, [and] my performances have not merited selection in the squad,” Sammy said in the video.”That’s okay, I’ve always believed West Indies cricket is not about Darren Sammy. They are looking to the future and I wanna wish the new captain – I don’t know if it’s out yet so I won’t call any names – all the best as he looks to lead West Indies cricket and take it forward.”Obviously, throughout my captaincy, winning the two [T20] World Cups has been the highlight. And these memories I will cherish for a long time. This is not me retiring from one-day or T20, it’s just me thanking the fans and my players and the coaches I’ve worked with and WICB for…yeah, letting me lead the side for the last six years. But for now the captaincy has come to an end and thank you people.”I just know I played with my heart and soul whenever I stepped out on the cricket field.”In an emotional six-minute long video, Sammy first spoke about the CPL campaign of his team St Lucia Zouks, that lost the eliminator to Trinbago Knight Riders on Thursday, before talking about losing his West Indies captaincy and his exclusion from the T20 squad. The limited-overs team is scheduled to play two T20Is against India in Florida at the end of the month.”Six years ago I was asked to captain West Indies, a task which I fought [and] would be the biggest challenge in my career, in my life,” Sammy said. “A task which I know would be so difficult but guess what…I took it head on. I embraced the challenge, I embraced the difficulty. I turn up at the office which is my playground, the cricket field, every day and put in the work.”I started off with Ottis Gibson [then West Indies coach]. I want to thank you buddy for believing in me and now it has ended up with Phil [Simmons]. To my players all over the years, who’ve been part of the team and who’ve been under my captaincy, I want to thank you all for all the support. We’ve had our ups and downs but I have never given up hope, I have never stopped believing in myself and in the team. That is what I was about as captain – trying to instill positive, never-say-die attitude into my players. The result we won two World Cups and I want to thank all of you.”Like Sammy, West Indies wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin chose social media to tweet about his exclusion from the Test side that was to play against India at home.Sammy led West Indies to the 2016 World T20 title four months ago, to go with the trophy won in 2012 in Sri Lanka. He did not have much of an impact with bat and ball though: he faced 13 balls in his three innings, scoring eight runs, and bowled three overs, taking one wicket.Sammy led West Indies in 47 T20Is, starting in 2011, with 27 wins. After winning the T20 title in Kolkata in April this year, he gave an emotional speech at the post-match presentation, expressing his disappointment at the lack of support from the WICB.

ICC asked to take 'more control' of DRS

The ICC’s cricket committee and its chief executives’ committee want the global body to take “more control” of the decision review system (DRS), the ICC chief executive David Richardson has said.”Moving forward we probably need to take heed of what the cricket committee is saying, take heed of what the chief executives’ committee is saying, which is ICC should take more control over DRS,” Richardson said at the end of the six-day annual conference in Edinburgh on Saturday.Ever since it was first used in international cricket the DRS has polarised opinion despite some of the higher-ranked ICC officials, such as Richardson and current general manager Geoff Allardice, asserting that the system has been improving and performing consistently over time. Regardless, players and match officials have pointed out that it does not help if different technologies are used for DRS in different countries.Other than firm opposition from the BCCI, its most powerful member, the ICC has pointed out that high costs was a factor behind not funding the DRS. “So the implications of that need to be worked out: what is it going to cost, what it will take for the ICC to take more control, do we need to buy technologies, rent technologies etc,” Richardson said. “And, then, hopefully we would be able to implement down the line a more consistent form of DRS – wherever it is used it should be consistent. The players understand it, the umpires understand it, and the fans as well.”Last year the ICC commissioned engineers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to independently assess the performance of the technologies that are part of the DRS: ball-tracking and edge-detection. Allardice and former India captain and current head coach Anil Kumble, who is also head of the ICC cricket committee, were closely involved in the process. This June, the cricket committee was given a detailed report by the MIT experts. The aim of the testing process, Allardice told ESPNcricinfo recently, was for the researchers “to present their findings on each of the technologies they have assessed or observed to the CC (cricket committee) – their observations of the technology and their suitability for use”. He said that it was for the cricket committee to provide direction to the future use of the DRS.”Ideally the cricket committee was very much in favour of, if we are going to have DRS it should be consistently applied. I think once we get a system which everyone trusts then we are much closer to having a system which all teams will accept,” Richardson said in Edinburgh. “DRS has been around since 2011 (2008 was the first time it was trialled) and when it was first introduced the ball-tracking technology in most peoples’ eyes was good. But since then it has got better. We knew it was far more accurate than all the doubters were giving it credit for.”The BCCI has been the main critic of the DRS and specifically the ball-tracking technology, which it has said is not 100% accurate. Richardson said the testing process provided some hope. “The report is very encouraging. The report shows that actually ball tracking is ever more accurate than we perhaps gave it credit for.”Consequently the ICC decided to modify the umpire’s call aspect of lbw referrals: from October 1, for on-field lbw decisions to be overturned, half of the ball would now need to hit any part of the stumps. Earlier, half of the ball needed to hit a zone between the middle of off stump and the middle of leg stump.Richardson said this was only possible because the MIT testing had proved ball tracking was good enough. “And for that reason we are able to safely reduce the margin of uncertainty or the umpire’s call as we refer to. Ian Botham and all these experts were always saying “how can that be given not out? That ball was crashing into the leg stump.” But because the middle of the ball was just marginally, one millimetre, to the right of centre of the stump, then the umpire’s decision wasn’t reversed.”So what we have done really is just made that margin of uncertainty slightly bigger. Now the middle of the ball must be in line with the stump, which means half of the ball hitting the stump is going to be given out in the future. That is the simple change.”

Rangers’ 43-Touch "Dangerman" Took His Chance Today

Glasgow Rangers returned to winning ways this afternoon at Ibrox as they clawed back the deficit to nine points in the Premiership title race, albeit on a temporary basis.

The 5-2 victory over St Mirren wasn’t without a scare or two, with the Paisley outfit twice equalising through Mark O’Hara and the scores were tied at 2-2 heading into the final ten minutes of the match.

A flurry of goals followed, with Alfredo Morelos netting twice and late substitute Scott Arfield also getting on the scoresheet. The result means Michael Beale has only been on the wrong end of defeat twice during his spell as manager, both to Celtic.

Todd Cantwell was impressive yet again. The Englishman received a Sofascore rating of 9.5/10 for his display, comfortably the best player on the pitch as he added two assists to his early goal.

The former Norwich City player has been a shrewd signing, and he also chipped in with two key passes, five shots in total and four tackles throughout. However, it was Fashion Sakala who took his opportunity well, enjoying a solid performance against the Buddies.

How did Fashion Sakala perform for Rangers against St Mirren?

The Zambian has enjoyed success under Beale having been frozen out of the starting XI earlier in the season by former boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Under the Englishman, Sakala has scored six goals and grabbed seven assists, and it’s no wonder he was dubbed a “dangerman” by Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie before the recent Old Firm clash.

Against St Mirren, the 26-year-old was deployed in a slightly unfamiliar left-wing role due to an injury to Ryan Kent, although he has starred in this position before, most notably in a crucial win over Hibernian at the start of March.

Sakala scored the Gers’ second goal this afternoon while registering three key passes and five shots in total, clearly demonstrating how much of an attacking threat he posed the opposition defence.

The winger was successful with four of his eight dribble attempts and took 43 touches throughout his stint on the pitch, and despite not starting a match for a few weeks, he showed no sign of sluggishness in his performance.

The showing will have pleased Beale greatly and proves that he has solid strength in depth within his team, which could prove to be crucial heading into next season.

Spurs Issued Potential Blow Over 35 y/o Manager

Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be interested in replacing Antonio Conte with Julian Nagelsmann – but the German is not expected to make a decision until the summer.

Is Nagelsmann Tottenham's first choice?

Having been released by Bayern Munich last week, it is reported Nagelsmann has emerged as one of the front-runners on the north London club's radar.

But he is not the only one with the director of football, Fabio Paratici, believed to have drawn up a shortlist of potential options for Daniel Levy to choose from.

Following the Italian's departure, Cristian Stellini – along with Ryan Mason – is expected to see out the campaign in the dugout at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And the notion of potentially bringing in Nagelsmann over the coming days has been shut down by journalist Valentina Maceri speaking on Sky Sports:

"As far as we know, Nagelsmann has no interest to join a club right now because he wants to take his time to reconsider everything that he experienced at Bayern Munich.

"He wants to reanalyse everything he did with Bayern Munich. So he wants to take his time to breathe, to take a break and to rethink about what he has achieved so far as a very, very young coach."

Should Spurs look beyond Nagelsmann?

A big decision awaits the north London side over the coming days, with the prospect of seeing out the remaining 10 games with Stellini and Mason when there is Champions League football to play for.

Whatever Spurs do, it does feel as if recent results have put them in a position where Champions League football is going to be a big challenge with their injury issues in mind.

The draw against Southampton saw Spurs miss the opportunity to go four points clear of Newcastle United with 10 games remaining.

Julian Nagelsmann prepares for Bayern Munich's Bundesliga clash against Bayer Leverkusen.

And the issue now lies in the Magpies having two games in hand over the Lilywhites with the gap reduced down to two points.

This will put huge pressure on the shoulders of whoever is the manager for the remainder of the campaign.

If it is to be Stellini, then he certainly has some massive tests ahead of him with away trips to Liverpool and Newcastle as well as home games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Manchester United within the next month.

But there would remain some uncertainty as to whether a new face could provide a big enough boost at this stage in the season to get them over the lines.

And with Nagelsmann seemingly off the cards, it does reduce the number of realistic appointments, with only Luis Enrique and Mauricio Pochettino currently out of a job.

There is a lot of uncertainty around Spurs with the futures of Harry Kane and Fabio Paratici remaining unresolved as yet, so perhaps it is best for a potential new manager to wait until the summer to assess his options.

Liverpool must unleash Jordan Henderson

Liverpool suffered a humiliating defeat at the Vitality Stadium yesterday in their Premier League clash with Bournemouth and Jurgen Klopp will surely be left frustrated following another unorganised and uninspiring performance from his side.

The Reds went into the game off the back of a monumental 7-0 victory at Anfield last weekend against bitter rivals Manchester United and supporters were hoping that the tenacious display would spark a much-needed turnaround in their inconsistent campaign, alas it was not meant to be.

Klopp’s formerly high-performing and unstoppable side found themselves completely outplayed by their opponents on their visit to the south coast and it was blatantly obvious that the midfield selection were completely out of their depth from the very start.

Liverpool’s young breakthrough stars Harvey Elliott and Stefan Bajcetic were deployed alongside Brazilian stalwart Fabinho in the starting set-up in the centre of the pitch, however, the German coach quickly realised he had made a huge mistake.

Both youthful prospects struggled to fend off the pressure applied by the Cherries which led to Elliott being hooked at half-time after being dribbled past four times and losing 100% of his duels over the first 45 minutes.

It was crystal clear that Liverpool sorely missed the dominant and controlled presence of Jordan Henderson in the heart of the team with a clear lack of leadership and a poor approach to the recovery needed following the first-half winner from Philip Billing.

Should Klopp unleash Jordan Henderson?

Indeed, the Liverpool captain has had his own struggles in some of his individual performances this season alongside many other key players who have failed to step up when it matters most this season.

However, there is no denying that Henderson offers sound leadership and eliminates the kind of uncharacteristic chaos that was caused for large periods of the game yesterday.

Over 23 league appearances this season, the 32-year-old has registered one assist, created three big chances and successfully completed 57% of his dribbles, as well as averaging 50.4 touches, 36.9 accurate passes and winning 1.6 duels per game.

Not only that, Henderson ranks in the top 10% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for progressive passes whilst tallying up a 90% short pass completion rate, delivering 2.7 shot-creating actions per game and completing 102 ball recoveries in the Premier League so far, proving that he is a hard-working and consistent presence.

The Sunderland-born midfielder has no shortage of admirers praising him for his consistency and impact on the success Liverpool has seen since the arrival of Klopp, with journalist Henry Winter paying tribute to the player’s strong leadership skills on and off the pitch:

“He’s been a beacon of hope in dark times for the country, a nation craving real leadership.

“And he’s a winner on the pitch, too, helping end that 30-year wait for the title. Gerrard’s right. The captain’s armband, that symbol of taking responsibility, suits Henderson well.”

With that being said, it would be a no-brainer for Klopp to unleash Henderson over the remaining 12 league fixtures as he could be the guiding light that Liverpool desperately need to secure a Champions League qualifying spot for next season.

Liverpool send scouts to watch Gvardiol

Liverpool have sent scouts to watch RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol ahead of a potential summer move, according to reports.

The Lowdown: Anfield move wanted

Sky Sports reporter Peter Smith name-checked the Reds as one of three Premier League clubs interested in a deal for the 21-year-old, who has a £98m buyout clause included in his contract.

The Croatian has previously admitted that it would be a dream for him to complete a switch to Anfield having watched his admirers ever since he was a child.

Journalist Ben Jacobs also revealed that the centre-back is looking to transition to the top flight, handing Jurgen Klopp yet another boost.

The Latest: Liverpool scout Gvardiol

According to 90min, Liverpool, alongside Manchester City, have both ‘sent scouts’ to watch Gvardiol so that they can keep ‘regular updates’ on their target’s situation.

The Merseyside outfit want to make sure that they ‘remain in the loop’, with a move ahead of next season looking ‘increasingly likely’.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/liverpool-transfer-news-and-rumours/” title=”Liverpool Transfer News and Rumours” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/cropped-2021-03-07T155652Z_1459311687_UP1EH3718ASBK_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LIV-FUL-REPORT.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Massive coup

Gvardiol has been dubbed the ‘Haaland of defenders’ by talent scout Jacek Kulig so it would be a massive coup should Liverpool be able to get a deal for him over the line.

The 6 foot 1 star currently averages 2.5 clearances and 1.4 aerial wins per game in the Bundesliga, highlighting the rock he can be at the heart of a backline (WhoScored).

Leipzig’s standout performer also ranks in the 98th percentile for successful take-ons, showing that he’s more than comfortable stepping out and pushing his team up the pitch.

Gvardiol being a threat at both ends of the field will be an attractive attribute to Klopp, and having made his love for the club publicly known, this could be one to watch in the months ahead.
