West Ham ready to tempt defender who David Moyes wants with big-money offer

West Ham United are ready to tempt a defender who manager David Moyes wants with a big-money contract offer, despite the uncertainty surrounding their boss.

Moyes contract looking set to expire at West Ham

As things stand, the Hammers head coach is on course to leave at the end of this season with his official contract expiring on June 30.

According to Fabrizio Romano last week, West Ham are yet to make a final decision on Moyes' future as we slowly approach the final two months of his second tenure at the club.

"Rumours appear to be continuing on David Moyes but at this stage I’m not aware of decisions made about him by West Ham,” Romano said to CaughtOffside for his Daily Briefing.

“The club are fully focused on the Premier League and European football, so everything that comes next will be discussed later. I think many times we heard that Moyes was almost gone and he’s still there.

“Nothing is decided yet.”

Moyes has claimed that a new contract offer is there from West Ham, and it is him delaying the signing of it, but this has since been refuted by reliable media sources like ExWHUemployee.

The 60-year-old, following one of the most successful periods of West Ham's history, in which they've won a European trophy, could well be on the move if he doesn't make a success of these last few games.

A crunch Europa League quarter-final against German frontrunners Bayer Leverkusen awaits this week, which could be pivotal in determining Moyes' future, but an intriguing report by TEAMtalk has suggested that West Ham could also be planning for a future under their current manager.

West Ham ready to tempt Adarabioyo with Moyes an admirer

Indeed, it is believed Moyes is a real admirer of Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo, which has a bearing on their transfer plans for the Englishman.

Amid Moyes' fondness for the 26-year-old, West Ham are said to be planning to make Tosin a lucrative contract offer in a bid to tempt towards the London Stadium.

The former Man City defender's contract expires at the end of this season, which has alerted a host of top sides, including the Irons, to the possibility of snapping him up for free later this year.

The 6 foot 5 centre-back has been brilliant for Fulham since returning from an injury earlier this season, and City boss Pep Guardiola has previously heralded Tosin's physical attributes.

“He is fast, strong in the air, and has the quality to look forward behind the line for the next pass,” said Guardiola (via GOAL).

“He definitely has a future in the first team. He is a nice guy, his mind is open, he listens, he trains every day like it’s the last training of his life and I like to work with these kinds of players a lot.”

Leeds preparing to sell £45,000-a-week player who Daniel Farke doesn’t want

Leeds United are currently fighting to secure an instant return to the Premier League with automatic promotion out of the Championship.

The Whites are currently third in the table and only two points separate them, Leicester, and Ipswich across the top three, whilst Southampton are three points behind them in fourth.

Daniel Farke's side will be looking to get over the line in the final three games of the regular season, although they will need the two teams above them to slip up before the focus can turn to the upcoming summer transfer window.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke watches a Championship game.

Leeds have a host of senior players currently out on loan, having been shipped out after the club's relegation from the Premier League at the end of last term, and there is one player who reportedly has little chance of being a part of Farke's team moving forward.

Leeds want to move on from Brenden Aaronson

According to Football Insider, USA international Brenden Aaronson will not be part of the Leeds squad for the 2024/25 campaign, irrespective of the division the club are in.

The report claims that the former Norwich City and Borussia Monchengladbach tactician does not have any place in his side for the American attacker, whether that is in the Premier League or the Championship.

It states that the Yorkshire-based outfit will be 'desperate' to cash in on their current contingent of loanees, including Aaronson, if they fail to earn promotion, but could also loan them out again if needed.

Leeds midfielder Brenden Aaronson.

The Whites swooped to sign the attacking midfielder from Austrian side RB Salzburg for a reported fee of £25m, and it remains to be seen how much of that they would be able to recoup.

He is currently on loan with Union Berlin in the Bundesliga in Germany, having joined them last summer, but Football Insider state that they are unlikely to sign him again next season.

Why Brenden Aaronson should not have a future at Leeds

The 23-year-old dud has not enjoyed a successful season on the pitch with Union, as the Leeds loanee has failed to nail down a regular place in the starting XI.

Aaronson, who was once hailed as a "weed" for his rapid growth by Jesse Marsch, has started 10 of his 25 Bundesliga appearances during the 2023/24 campaign, and has contributed with two goals and zero assists from an attacking midfield position.

This could be why the German side are unlikely to pursue another deal for the American midfielder, who has averaged 9.9 completed passes per game in the league, in the summer transfer window.

As you can see in the table above, the £45k-per-week whiz endured a frustrating season in the Premier League after his £25m move from Salzburg. Over the last 365 days, for Union and Leeds, Aaronson ranks within the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers for blocks (2.16) per 90, and the top 3% for tackles (2.30) per 90 – showing that he does work hard for his team defensively.

However, he also ranks within the bottom 24% for non-penalty goals (0.14) per 90, and the bottom 2% for assists (0.00) per 90, which speaks to how little the midfielder offers from an attacking perspective.

Therefore, it is not surprising that Farke does not see a place for Aaronson in his side and is preparing to sell him as his statistics in the final third over the past two seasons are far from impressive, and the Whites should now do all they can to move him on permanently this summer.

The emphasis has been on bringing in young players on long-term deals, though, with an eye clearly on the future. However, manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking earlier this month, admitted that things could have been going better on the pitch this season if the squad wasn’t so young.

“I am not picking the team because they are young. I don’t want to be the coach that picks the youngest team in England. We are a young team, but we have a good balance. We have players like Thiago Silva, 39, Raheem Sterling, [Christopher] Nkunku, 26, or [Axel] Disasi.

“The problem is not that the players are so young. The problem is that the team is young. With 16 or 17 players that have arrived new from the beginning of the season, you need to build a team.

“At the moment, maybe it’s not so good. If not, we could be in another position. It’s obvious.”

It looks as if Chelsea are continuing the trend of looking to bring in new teenagers, alongside marquee names such as Victor Osimhen, with an update emerging on one defender.

Chelsea and Arsenal leading race for defender

According to The Athletic’s Jordan Campbell, both Chelsea and Arsenal are out in front in the race to sign Lewis Carrol from Aberdeen. The 15-year-old defender could be on the move this summer and has been hailed as a “big talent” and “compared to John Stones in style”.

Should the Blues pip the Gunners to a deal for Carrol, then you’d expect that the youngster would go straight into Chelsea’s youth side next season.

The Blues have shown in the past that some of their academy gems could then be sent out on loan before looking to break into the first-team setup, so Carrol could look to follow in the footsteps of fellow defenders Reece James and Lewi Colwill.

A move will be one to keep an eye on over the coming months, and over time, Chelsea could look back on this as a shrewd move, should Carrol go on to fulfil his potential, developing into a player similar to Stones.

Romano shares update on Emery’s Aston Villa future amid Bayern interest

There may have been concern inside Aston Villa as soon as it emerged that Thomas Tuchel would be leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season. Alongside Liverpool and Barcelona, another top European club was entering the manager market, and Unai Emery was bound to be hot property.

Sure enough, there were subsequently reports from Germany that Bayern are watching Emery, having seen his abilities first-hand when he knocked them out of the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage as the manager of Villarreal in 2021/22.

The reigning Bundesliga champions would love to appoint Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso, the man who looks set to dethrone them this season, but Liverpool are already in "advanced discussions" ahead of the departure of Jurgen Klopp. Emery is a potential plan-b, alongside former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and Stuttgart's Sebastian Hoeness. A return for Hansi Flick could also be on the cards.

Emery remains committed to Villa for now

In his daily briefing for Caught Offside, journalist Fabrizio Romano has given his take on the rumours linking Emery to Bayern. The good news for Villa is that the Spaniard remains "100% focused" on the club and isn't currently in talks over any other roles.

He said: “Some reports have suggested that Unai Emery could be considered as the next Bayern Munich boss. This would mean leaving Aston Villa managerless after two seasons in charge of the Premier League club.

“Honestly, I’ve zero on this at the moment, Bayern as well as Barça will be linked with many managers. I already saw many names around, but no decision has been made at all. Unai Emery is a fantastic manager, I think he has improved a lot in recent years but he’s now 100% focused on the Aston Villa project and he’s not speaking to other clubs right now.”

Losing Emery is unthinkable for Villa

It's vital that Villa keep Emery because, quite simply, he's the best thing to happen to the club in years. They have a chance to win their first major silverware since 1996 after reaching the Europa Conference League round of 16, where they'll face Ajax, and they could also qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1983.

As you can see in the table above, Emery has overseen a massive improvement from last season after replacing Steven Gerrard in the autumn of 2022. Villa have been in elite-level form since he arrived – they amassed a whopping 82 points from his first 40 league games in charge – but it simply went under the radar last season because they weren't close to the top of the table.

Aston Villa hit the jackpot by selling “fantastic” ace for £14m

The young prospect left Aston Villa in the summer.

ByTom Lever Feb 26, 2024

Emery has led Villa into the top four with an attractive brand of football that has delivered 56 goals so far – an average of 2.15 goals per game. It's on course to be their best season in that regard since 1959/60.

With famous wins against Manchester City and Arsenal under their belt, Villa fans have been enjoying a dream season so far, and they won't want to entertain any thought of the project coming to a premature halt.

'Glad the guys look up to me and trust me to do it' – Jofra Archer

England fast bowler credits team-mates’ support after ‘the best two months’ of his life

George Dobell at Lord's15-Jul-2019Jofra Archer has credited the support of his team-mates after holding his nerve to seal England’s first World Cup victory.Despite being the youngest in the side and having played only 13 ODIs before the World Cup final, Archer was the natural choice to bowl the Super Over that decided the game. And while he started that over with a wide and conceded a six from his second legitimate delivery, he came back strongly to restrict New Zealand to 15 in total – the same number of runs that England scored in their Super Over – to secure victory for his side on the basis that they hit more boundaries in the game. It meant that, barely two months after making his international debut, Archer was a World Cup winner.Afterwards, he said the last two months were “the best of his life” and thanked his team-mates for their “trust” and “respect”. In particular, he was grateful for the calming words he was offered by England’s senior players before and during that key over. One of them, Ben Stokes, knew exactly what he was going through: Stokes was charged with bowling the final over in 2016’s T20 World Cup final in Kolkata, only to concede four successive sixes to an inspired Carlos Brathwaite.”If we had lost today, I don’t know what I would have done tomorrow,” Archer said. “But Ben Stokes told me even before the over: ‘Win or lose, today does not define you. Everyone believes in you.’ He came to talk to me because of Kolkata. He probably went through the same emotions but was on the losing side.Ben Stokes was in Jofra Archer’s ear during the Super Over, and all over him afterwards•Getty Images

“The skipper, Eoin Morgan really believed in me, even after the six. A lot of captains could have had their head in their hands, but he was really calm and really understanding.”And Joe Root came up to me and said some inspirational words as well. So I knew that, if we did lose, it wasn’t the end of the world. I am glad that the guys look up to me and they trust me to do it. This is a great team. I cannot imagine a better bunch of guys to share it with. I can’t put it into words.”I have had the best two months of my life. Making my debut, making my World Cup debut, and playing in the final in the space of two months. It is really special to me and hopefully I can look back 15 years down the line and say I was a part of that.”As Archer looked back, he expressed the hope that England’s success could “inspire the next generation” to watch and play the game.”I hope that any kids watching that want to play cricket now for the whole week, for the whole year and try to pursue it to be professional,” he said. “We want to inspire the next generation because someone will have to take over from us.”And, asked if he hoped this success could help “change cricket’s elitist profile” in the UK, he replied: “I hope so. Because of everyone’s background they have a special role in the team.”

McKenzie's focus: Bangladesh's execution under pressure

Neil McKenzie, Bangladesh’s South African batting coach, wants his batsmen to trust their games in defining moments. Bangladesh started well against South Africa, but have somewhat fallen apart against New Zealand and England. The Bangladesh batsmen, on their part, believe McKenzie has made a difference in his time with the side. His belief that the Bangladesh batsmen are capable of making big scores, many say, is slowly beginning to seep through the ranks.”The trust is there,” McKenzie told ESPNcricinfo ahead of the England game, where they responded with 280 to fall 106 short. “I think it is for them to trust themselves and the game plans. From the batting side of things, it is about trusting the person who is doing the job. I think with trust, you can let them play their game. I like to see it with the lesser-experienced players who have all been proper match winners.””They have made good contributions in the last seven-eight months. [Mohammad] Mithun had two fifties in really trying conditions in New Zealand. We know what Soumya [Sarkar] can do. Mushfiqur [Rahim] and Shakib [Al Hasan] played really well. I think the guys can judge themselves on game plan. Committing to how they are going to play.”They need to have a backup plan, if plan A doesn’t work, then they need proper thinking. Bangladeshi batsmen have some great hand-speed. They hit the ball consistently well in skilled areas. We just have to trust their process.”McKenzie believes coaches and selectors have been consistent in picking players over the last 12 months precisely to empower them in tough situations. He cited the example of Liton Das, who was given ample opportunities and finally came good under pressure in the Asia Cup final, when he struck 121. Another example is Mosaddek Hossain, who has only managed to break open the selection door following an impressive 27-ball 52 not out in a rain-shortened tri-series final against West Indies in Malahide last month.”I think selection has been a lot more consistent,” he said. “We have to nurture our young players, and when they get the chance, they know they will get a proper run. It is not just one game in, one game out. I think it is through the whole system has been really good. Liton was in and out, up and down in the Asia Cup. We backed him. He got a good forty. He failed again and then he got an unbelievable hundred in the final.”The selectors are showing the guys that we back them. We trust and believe them. We are not giving them a chance because the journalists are saying that’s the guy who should be making it. The coaches and captain believe in these guys. It is batting for your country as a young player is really hard so you definitely need the backing from everybody.””Saikat has fantastic hands through the ball, he said of Mosaddek. “It is just about getting that consistency, wanting to be there when the pressure is on, and wanting to be there for Bangladesh when its needed. I am very pleased with him, I think he has worked really hard. I think his game plans are a little bit sound, and he comes with a bit of maturity and chance.”McKenzie also said he doesn’t mind batsmen getting out, if they are out to shots that was part of the strategy at a given time. He felt backing them in such situations was the best way to induce self-belief.”The guys are getting closer to knowing their games, which is really good for Bangladesh cricket,” he said. We will hopefully pose a few more 300s, when the wicket demands it. We have some proper players who are missing out in the squad and at home. It says that the batsmen you have on tour are world-class.”
