Liverpool left an emotional Deepdale with a 3-1 victory against Preston North End in the Reds' first game since the passing of Jota. Though just a pre-season friendly, this game meant so much more and the Reds will be glad to have won in the name of their much-loved Portuguese forward. Conor Bradley scored the opener from close range midway through the first half before a defensive error allowed substitute Nunez to double the Reds' advantage. Preston got on the scoresheet from a late corner through Liam Lindsay but a way back into the game was not forthcoming, as Gakpo scored a third late on to secure a deserved Liverpool victory.

Sunday was a day for Jota, of that there is no doubt. It was Liverpool's first pre-season game since his tragic passing alongside brother Andre Silva ten days ago and the emotion prior to kick-off was poignant. No.20 shirts – a number now officially retired by Liverpool in honour of Jota – and Portuguese flags were seen all around the ground. Preston's club anthem "Can't Help Falling in Love" was belted out prior to kick-off and touched all four corners of the ground, but the most powerful moment was when "You'll Never Walk Alone" was sung as the players began to walk out onto the field. It was a touching tribute worthy of the occasion. Both sets of players and fans took part in a minute's silence before the game got underway.

In an understandably slow start for both sides, 16-year-old Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha was a bright spark in the early stages. The teenager showed supreme confidence to skip past two Preston players and find a yard to shoot in the penalty area on 17 minutes, but his shot deflected wide. Ngumoha was not the only academy player who caught the eye, as 18-year-old Trey Nyoni was also impressive in midfield in the first half.

The whole stadium broke into Jota's famous chant for over five minutes on the 20-minute mark before the Reds upped the intensity after a water break offered a chance to reset. Dominik Szoboszlai had a couple of chances on goal before the Premier League champions took the lead in the 33rd minute through Bradley. Ngumoha was involved down the left, before a jinking run by Federico Chiesa found Szoboszlai and then Bradley, who was on hand to tap in from close range after the Hungarian mis-hit a shot into his path.

Preston had a couple of chances at the other end in a strong end to the half, Milutin Osmajic stretching to poke wide before Andrew Hughes headed onto the roof of the net following a long throw.

Arne Slot's visitors made a full 11 changes at the break, coming out for the second half with an entirely different line-up to outline the quality throughout the Reds' squad and academy. Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez came on at the break for their Liverpool debuts, but, remarkably, there was still no sign of record signing Florian Wirtz or captain Virgil van Dijk, neither of whom were in the squad.

It took just eight minutes for Liverpool's second-half team to get on the scoresheet, Nunez profiting from a short back-pass by Jordan Storey to round goalkeeper Daniel Iversen and slide the ball home in front of Liverpool's 6,000 supporters. Nunez celebrated with Jota's iconic video gaming celebration to honour his late teammate and friend.

The second half offered little goal-mouth action with Liverpool comfortable in their lead, though a couple of great defensive blocks in a 76th-minute scramble prevented Lewis Koumas or Curtis Jones scoring a third. Preston got an 83rd-minute goal through Lindsay's thumping header from a corner but Gakpo sealed the deal late on with a smart finish, after Nunez dummied the lively Ben Doak's cross into the Dutchman's path. Chants of Jota's name continued long after the final whistle and surely will for many more months and years to come.

Liverpool fielded 22 players in the match, giving a chance to almost all squad members and several academy players. Arguably the player who caught the eye the most was 16-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha, who continues to impress whenever given a chance by Slot. Ngumoha signed from Chelsea's academy in a major coup last year and became Liverpool's youngest-ever starter against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup in January.

Ngumoha was a livewire throughout the first half. Involved in the first goal, he could have scored himself after tricking inside multiple Preston defenders from the left. He may not be the finished article in terms of his end product just yet, but Ngumoha's talent was clear to see and will have made Liverpool fans increasingly optimistic about his future with the club.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Football is not the most important thing around Liverpool right now as players and fans alike begin to come to terms with the passing of one of their own. The Reds will begin their title defence in Jota's honour when Bournemouth visit Anfield for their opening-day Premier League game on August 15. Before then, pre-season games against the likes of AC Milan and Athletic Club and a Community Shield clash with Crystal Palace lie in wait.

As for Preston, they begin their Championship campaign at QPR on August 9 and will hope for a strong remainder of pre-season as they head into Paul Heckingbottom's second season at the club.

After an end-to-end opening, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia could only find the side netting when put through by Achraf Hakimi inside the opening 20 minutes. Then at the other end, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma made a great save to keep out Michael Olise's powerful drive as the Italian continued his strong run of form.

Kvaratskhelia looked the most likely to break the deadlock but Manuel Neuer spread himself well to deny the Georgian just after the half-hour mark. Soon after Dayot Upamecano had a header ruled out for offside, Kane was a whisker away from giving his side the lead five minutes before the break but his header flew inches over the bar.

The half ended on a sad note as Musiala appeared to suffer a horrific injury following a collision with Donnarumma, with the 22-year-old eventually being stretchered off the field.

Following a relatively uneventful start to the second half, substitute Ousmane Dembele missed a gilt-edged opportunity 15 minutes from time when he cut out Neuer's poor pass but failed to roll the ball into an empty net from 20 yards out.

However, the breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute when Kane lost the ball in his half, and moments later, Doue fired into the corner from the edge of the area. The Champions League winners went down to 10 men for the closing stages as William Pacho was shown a straight red for a reckless tackle on substitute Leon Goretzka.

Kane had the ball in the back of the net but his celebrations were cut short as the England captain was flagged offside, before PSG had their second player red carded when Lucas Hernandez elbowed Raphael Guerreiro just minutes after coming on.

Ballon d'Or favourite Dembele settled the contest with an emphatic finish deep into second-half stoppage time as the Ligue 1 champions secured a dramatic and feisty 2-0 victory, which also included Bayern having a penalty kick rescinded, to advance to the semi-finals of the Club World Cup.

In a contest high on energy but lacking in quality at times, 20-year-old Doue showed his class to bag a classy opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The youngster went on a number of delightful dribbles as he proved too hot to handle for Bayern's defence. His stock just keeps on rising.

    THE BIG LOSER

Although Kane's error led to PSG's first goal, losing Musiala to aserious-looking injury is a much bigger concern ahead of next season. The German international is arguably Bayern's best player, and if he is out for a long time, the German side may have to buy reinforcements in the transfer market.

Man Utd now considering move for Middlesbrough star loved by Michael Carrick

Manchester United are considering making a summer swoop for an “exemplary” young midfielder who is loved by one of the club’s former stars, according to a new report.

Amorim impressed by Man Utd youngsters as Heaven shines on debut

United put in a solid performance over the weekend by holding rivals Arsenal to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford, egding themselves further away from the bottom three and all but ending the Gunners’ title hopes.

The Red Devils took the lead on the day through a superb Bruno Fernandes free-kick just after the break, but they were punished by Declan Rice for not putting the game to bed as they forced several impressive saves out of David Raya.

While Fernandes received much of the plaudits for his role in the draw, head coach Ruben Amorim was also impressed with young defender Ayden Heaven, who signed from Arsenal in a path also trodden by Chido Obi-Martin and came on as a second-half substitute against his former side to make his Premier League debut.

“I think he played really well,” Amorim said after the match. “He’s really comfortable with the ball, sometimes more than he should be! He is so relaxed and that is a good thing. He’s very aggressive. I think we have a very good player.”

Former Newcastle United star Alan Shearer was also impressed with Heaven’s display: “He looked comfortable, assured, and made a couple of important tackles and blocks. He did really well in the second half.”

United considering more young signings with Middlesbrough star on wishlist

The Red Devils could soon have another promising young player on their books in the form of Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney. According to GiveMeSport, United are considering making a move for the 22-year-old star if they fail to land some of their premium targets in the summer – Atalanta’s Ederson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

Hayden Hackney for Middlesbrough.

Adding a new player in the middle of the park is understood to be a priority for Amorim, who wants to move Fernandes into a more advanced role, and United see Hackney as someone who could fit the bill. Crystal Palace are thought to be the most interested party at the moment, but a club of United’s stature going for the England U-21 international ‘could shift the dynamic quickly’.

Middlesbrough are currently managed by former United midfielder Michael Carrick, who has been full of praise for Hackney since taking charge of the club in 2022. Back in March of last year, Carrick described Hackney as “exemplary,” praising both his attitude and talent.

“You couldn’t ask for much more from Hayden,” said the Boro boss. “He’s grounded, he’s humble, he’s down to earth and loves to learn. He loves the place and he loves the club as well.

“To have that, added with the talent he has got, it’s the perfect scenario. I think it just shows his consistency really, over a long period of time. It’s not easy when you’re a younger player, but he’s certainly done that.”

Exclusive: Farke told to utilise £90k-p/w Leeds player who wants to leave

Former Leeds United man Jermaine Pennant believes Daniel Farke should reintroduce a player who wants to leave the club to the squad next season, as he has Premier League quality.

Leeds on course for promotion

Leeds boosted their Championship promotion chances significantly with a dramatic 2-1 victory against Sunderland in their last match, with Pascal Struijk striking late to put his side seven points clear of third-place Burnley.

With 13 games left to play, the Whites are in a very strong position to return to the Premier League at the second time of asking, and Pennant has told Football FanCast he fancies his former side’s chances of going all the way.

“I can’t see a massive crash, I can’t see a massive dip in form. With the Championship, there’s so many games, but I think Leeds are in a comfortable place. Will they win the league? That’s a question to be asked, but for automatic promotion, I think they’re looking odds on.”

Leeds now considering signing £5m Sunderland star and "interesting" striker

Leeds are beginning to put plans in place for next season and are keen on adding more firepower to their forward line.

By
Brett Worthington

Feb 19, 2025

After suffering relegation from the Premier League in 2023, the West Yorkshire outfit were forced to loan out Rasmus Kristensen and Jack Harrison to top-tier clubs.

When asked whether Farke should bring any of the players currently out on loan back into the fold next season, the former Leeds man said: “I think Jack Harrison. We’ve seen teams come into the Premier League and not invest in Premier League players who can do the job. The Championship and the Premier League is such a drastic difference.

“So a player like Harrison who’s been in the Premier League and is in and out but knows all about it, I think they need to keep players like that and bring him back in.”

Harrison keen to stay at Everton

The £90k-per-week winger has received regular game time at Everton this season, and during the January transfer window it was reported he wanted to earn a permanent deal with the Toffees, rather than returning to Elland Road.

Of course, that stance could change if Leeds are promoted to the Premier League this season, but the 28-year-old may also still be keen on being a part of the David Moyes rebuild, having played a key role since the Scot returned to Goodison Park.

Everton's Carlos Alcaraz celebrates scoring their second goal with Everton'sJackHarrison

Although Harrison has been impressive in the top flight in the past, amassing five goals and seven assists for the Whites in the 2022-23 campaign, this season has not been his best, with the Everton loanee still yet to record a goal contribution in any competition.

As such, it’s not the end of the world if a return to Elland Road isn’t on the cards this summer, and Farke may perhaps focus more on bringing in Manor Solomon on a permanent deal, with Pennant also particularly impressed by the Israel star.

Slot has already found Luis Diaz 2.0 in Liverpool’s "frightening" 17 y/o

FSG are going to invest in Liverpool’s first-team squad this summer. It might feel like the Anfield side are allergic to transfer activity, but having held off from big acquisitions over the past three windows, the time for strengthening is nearly upon us.

What is the priority? Where should sporting director Richard Hughes centre his focus? Liverpool are approaching a critical juncture, not least because arguably the biggest three names at the club are just a few months away from their contracts expiring.

However, Liverpool are a prudent club and will have spent countless hours mapping out strategies going forward. While the future of right-sided forward Mohamed Salah remains a point of great contention for fans, who desperately want him to stay, there are one or two forwards whose sales would be met with less dismay and more acceptance.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah

Perhaps, in Luis Diaz’s case, such an eventuality would even be a warm thing.

Why Liverpool should cash in on Luis Diaz

Make no mistake: Diaz is one of the best wingers in all of the Premier League Europe. The Colombia international joined from Porto in January 2022, all tricks and athletics and energy. He cost an initial £37m and was billed as Sadio Mane’s successor.

Liverpool's Luis Diaz celebrates

He has succeeded Mane, winning the FA Cup and two Carabao Cups; and, whisper it quietly, he’s edging toward matching the Senegalese’s Premier League title tally.

But Diaz is also approaching a crossroads of his own, for he will be playing out the penultimate year of his Liverpool contract next year. By the time Diaz’s current deal expires, he will have turned 30.

There’s also the matter of his potency, averaging a goal contribution every 0.39 matches for Liverpool as opposed to the devastating Mane’s 0.60 per game.

With Cody Gakpo, 25, so high and mighty on the left wing, you feel that Diaz has been demoted to a second-fiddle sort of role, only playing with such regularity this term because of his makeshift centre-forward stint, largely facilitated by Darwin Nunez’s unreliability and Diogo Jota’s inconsistency on the fitness front.

It’s possible that Diaz will be sold this year. Barcelona and Saudi-based outfits have expressed an interest, with Liverpool fielding bids worth £67m.

He’d need replacing externally, to be sure, but Liverpool might find that they actually have a homegrown successor in their midst.

Liverpool may already have their next Luis Diaz

Gakpo has scored 16 goals already this season, matching his haul from last year having played about 1,000 fewer minutes. For sure, the Netherlands star has replaced Diaz as Liverpool’s star man on the left flank.

Diaz is still playing regularly though, but his blank against Everton last weekend now means that he has gone six top-flight fixtures without a goal contribution, starting as the ‘striker’ each game. In fact, the 28-year-old has only scored in seven of his 34 matches in all competitions, with 12 goals in total.

The South American’s football isn’t exclusively defined by his numbers, but he’s hardly irreplaceable for a sum such as £67m, especially when Liverpool have a prospect as exciting as Rio Ngumoha pushing against the first-team fencing.

Ngumoha, 17, has made waves within Liverpool’s academy this year, having been poached from Chelsea’s Cobham last summer in what has been regarded as a detrimental blow by senior Chelsea figures.

He’s the real deal. It’s a situation that has even been likened to the Blues’ former loss of Jamal Musiala, who joined Bayern Munich aged 16 and hasn’t looked back.

Ngumoha saw the success of ‘Klopp’s Kids’ last year and decided that Liverpool’s foundational fold would be the perfect hothouse for him to foster his ability and fight for a place in the first team.

Liverpool’s starlet is principally a left-sided forward but, as is commonplace at youth level, he’s played across a variety of roles. However, the right footer’s pace and natural power denote a place on the left wing.

Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha

Reporter Lewis Bower went as far as to say that his quality at such a young age is peerless at Kirkby academy: “I’ve probably never seen anything like it before. In terms of his ceiling, it’s frightening.”

All told, he’s rather good, with his FA Cup showing against Accrington Stanley this season showcasing the raw qualities that bespeak a future at the summit of the European game.

He was tenacious, with a bite and ball-carrying drive that certainly presents similarities to Diaz. With several years of hard graft ahead, Ngumoha could find himself occupying a nailed-down role in Slot’s squad, perhaps taking the long-term seat that will have been vacated by Liverpool’s Colombia international.

The Liverpool Echo’s Ian Doyle even handed Ngumoha a 7/10 match score on his professional debut, causing problems for the League Two side throughout and looking at home among his senior peers. The teenager’s propensity for good timing was noted, releasing balls at the right moment and knowing when to take on his man.

In The Pipeline

The caveat to all this is that should Diaz be sold this summer, it would be remiss to throw Ngumoha into the deep end before he has developed his football to the right level.

However, given that Slot has already handed the prodigy an opportunity, it’s fair to say that he can expect further chances over the coming months and years, with a goal toward taking the baton as Liverpool’s new talisman.

Fantasy Premier League is becoming more and more popular, with managers looking to build the best squad in England’s top flight on a weekly basis.

Whether it be topping a mini-league with friends or trying to become the manager of the week, points mean prizes in FPL, but how does the system work and what does the new Assistant Manager chip mean?

Basic points

Starting simple on how many points a squad member would earn your team for getting on the pitch.

Well, under 60 minutes is 1 point, whereas over an hour brings in 2 points. Easy, right?

Defensive points

As they say, a winning team is built on a solid foundation at the back, and goalkeepers and defenders can bring in plenty of points across the campaign.

Should a shot-stopper or defender keep a clean sheet, that would result in 4 points, whereas midfielders also get 1 point for a clean sheet. Also, for every three shots saved by a goalkeeper, that would bring in 1 more point, and if they save a penalty, that’s 5 points.

Attacking points

Essentially, goals and assists should play a big part in your thinking when picking your squad and making transfers.

For every goal your striker scores, you’ll collect 4 points. If your midfielder bags, 5 points, and if a defender scores a rare goal, 6 points. If somehow your goalkeeper scores, that would bring in a whopping 10 points.

Assists are a simple 3 points, no matter which member of your squad gets one. Players will also be rewarded with an assist should they win a free kick or penalty that is subsequently scored.

Every Premier League club's penalty-taker

Here’s who you can expect to be lining up from 12 yards.

ByBarney Lane Nov 15, 2024 Losing points in FPL

You can also lose points in FPL on the pitch – and for plenty of things, too. The costliest deduction is for a red card, which will see 3 points taken off your score, whereas a yellow card will result in a 1-point deduction.

If any of your players score an own goal or miss a penalty, that will see a -2 on your record, and for every two goals conceded by a goalkeeper or defender, be prepared for a -1.

Bonus points

If all those points weren’t enough, FPL also has a bonus points system in place, which rewards the three standout performers from each Premier League fixture.

The highest-scoring player will be awarded 3 points, 2 to the second-best and 1 to the third.

Players with the most FPL bonus points this season

Bonus points are a key feature in FPL, but which players are the best at picking them up?

ByBarney Lane Nov 1, 2024 Bench points

Unfortunately, if you benched a player who scored a hat-trick and all 11 of your starting lineup featured in some capacity, there is no way to get those points on the pitch – unless you’ve used the Bench Boost chip, of course.

However, if a player(s) from your starting XI is injured and didn’t play, the substitute(s) you selected will come on and score you points.

Assistant Manager chip

The new Assistant Manager chip allows FPL bosses to use the Premier League’s managers to get them more points. The chip can be activated once from 1st February and will come on board as your ‘assistant’ manager, scoring points for three successive games. However, they will come at a cost, with assistant managers ranged between £0.5 and £1.5m.

But how do the likes of Arteta, Guardiola and Slot score points? Well, they will earn 6 points for a win, 3 points for a draw, 2 points for a clean sheet and 1 point for every goal scored by that team.

There is also a tempting bonus on offer. If your chosen manager beats a team ranked five places higher in the Premier League table, you will get a bonus 10 points, rewarding those who are backing the managers outside the European places.
