Mason Crane, Liam Dawson spin Hampshire towards victory over Essex

Mason Crane and Liam Dawson spun Hampshire towards victory before James Vince took them over the winning line with a thunderous 87 not out to give the visitors their first victory at the Cloudfm County Ground in Chelmsford for five years.Spin twins Crane and Dawson ripped through Essex Eagles’ batting in the middle overs as they snatched figures of 5 for 55 from their combined eight overs to set up a seven-wicket thrashing. The Eagles, having been 81 for 1 at one point, lost nine wickets for 52 runs in 47 balls, to fall well below par.Hampshire knocked off the 134 required inside 14 overs, with captain Vince raising his bat for his second fifty of the competition, to condemn Essex to a single win from their opening five fixtures.Hampshire, who have now won two Vitality Blast matches on the bounce after ending their Somerset hoodoo last week, hadn’t previously won on this ground in any competition since a T20 victory here in 2014 – with this being only their 10th success at Chelmsford this century.Vince won the toss, stuck Essex in, and was immediately high-fiving Chris Wood and Dawson after Cameron Delport edged the first ball of the match to first slip.Adam Wheater and Tom Westley, who had been promoted to the top of the order then enjoyed a boundary-hitting contest. Westley won the battle with three huge sixes and a trio of boundaries to Wheater’s four inventive fours and sole maximum in the pair’s 81-run stand in 53 balls. But Dawson and Crane entered the attack and dismissed Westley and Wheater in successive overs before ripping through the rest of the Eagles’ batting.Crane then suckered Ryan ten Doeschate into a hoof down the ground, Chris Morris snaffling at long-off, before Dan Lawrence was bowled next ball.Shane Snater was run out by Wood attempting a foolhardy second run and then Simon Harmer chipped to Sam Northeast at short cover, Dawson and Crane ending with middle-order figures of 2 for 32 and 3 for 24 respectively.Overseas duo Adam Zampa and Mohammad Amir quickly followed as Essex lost eight wickets for 32 runs in an epic 40 ball collapse.Paul Walter then thumped 26 off 13 balls to give the hosts some respectability but Matt Quinn was castled to leave him stranded – the Eagles all out for 133.Aneurin Donald scored four and out in two balls before Vince and Rilee Rossouw comfortably ticked through the runs in a 78-run stand. Vince, who opened his campaign with 50 against Kent, tonked one over long-on to accompany a series of gorgeous fours to reach his milestone in 34 balls. Rossouw slapped to the straight boundary to depart for 25 but Vince continued to take his tally to three sixes and 12 fours. He ended unbeaten on 87 as he and Northeast eased Hampshire towards the line with a 50 stand. The latter was bowled but Vince scored the winning runs two balls later.

James Anderson injury scare rocks Lancashire – Durham clash

Dane Vilas fifty, Graham Onions five-for give Lancs a good lead in Sedbergh

For many devoted followers of cricket the big parade has not taken place at Sedbergh these last three days. Affairs at Edgbaston and Chester-le-Street have commanded attention, filled airwaves and ensured there are no spare seats in press boxes. Empires are being challenged in the World Cup – and perhaps replaced. Yet for other, equally enthusiastic supporters of the game there has been nothing else worth watching but the contest in this fell-ringed theatre. International cricket passes them by until the morning papers arrive on the breakfast tables of their hotels. So do posturing politicians; so would minor wars. And then, at just before a quarter to twelve on this third day, a 36-year-old fast bowler bent down and felt his calf. Suddenly two worlds were joined in mild frenzy. James Anderson, England’s best bowler, was injured. Phones rang. Texts bleeped. Where the hell was Sedbergh anyway? When do the Ashes start? Above all, how was Jimmy? Tell us, quickly, tell us NOW!On the field Graham Onions caused some spectators to speculate for the umpteenth time as to how many Test Matches he might have played had his career not coincided with that of Anderson, of whom he is a great admirer. The former Durham seamer took four wickets in 31 balls against his old mates to finish with 5 for 93. It is Onions’ 30th haul of five or more wickets in first-class cricket. Two of the wickets were caught behind but Ned Eckersley and Nathan Rimmington were pinned lbw on the back foot, the later for a well-struck 53. Lancashire took a 56-run lead into lunch.News emerged of Anderson, who had only bowled eight balls in the morning. Two further attempts to complete run-ups had been abandoned and Sam Byrne, the Lancashire physio, had come out to meet him on the steps of the Knowles Pavilion, a building which has no doubt seen its share of tears over the decades. Burnley’s finest had suffered tightness in his right calf. He would not bowl again in the game but might bat. He will be assessed. The ECB’s bulletin would have to satisfy the frantic text-senders. Good luck with that.Yet perhaps it was curiously fitting that Anderson should suffer the injury at a school whose motto is (Stern Nurse of Men). Anderson has been known to be a trifle grim, even in moments of triumph, and he was certainly in need of nursing. Moreover, the motto of his own school, St Theodore’s in Burnley, : (For the Faith of our Ancestors) is absolutely bugger all use when you’ve gone in the fetlock.Almost immediately Lancashire’s blazered supporters, who have gathered in two temporary stands at the Powell End, had even more pressing pains with which to deal. Chris Rushworth found the channel on or outside off stump in his first over. Keaton Jennings edged the first ball of the innings to Ned Eckersley; Haseeb Hameed, the fourth to Cameron Bancroft at slip. Lancashire 0 for 2.Alex Davies was joined by Liam Livingstone, who immediately batted with his characteristic contempt for half measures. If he defended, the drawbridge was pulled up; if he attacked, the kitchen sink, washing machine and waste-bin were thrown at the ball. Six boundaries followed, some of them reminiscent of Kevin Pietersen. Livingstone flicked Brydon Carse through midwicket and drove Nathan Rimmington through mid-off. A major innings beckoned, one which might define the match and transcend the pitch’s variable bounce. But the first time Livingstone could not decide between the fish or meat course he edged Raine to Bancroft and departed for 36. By then Davies had gone too, caught on the boundary when miscuing Rimmington. And in the over after Livingstone’s dismissal, Rob Jones was beaten by Liam Trevaskis’s throw from the boundary and run out for five. Lancashire were 59 for 5 and their lead was 115.But if Anderson is a competitor whose galaxy of skills is underpinned by a fierce professionalism, so is his county captain. Some skippers change the bowling; Dane Vilas changes the team he leads. He will not ask any young players to go into the trenches if he has not led him there and faced the bullets, too. Cricketers like Jones and Josh Bohannon could not have a better leader in seasons when they are coming to understand how tough – and how glorious – the life of professional cricketer can be.Steven Croft, for whom this season has been a lovely late renaissance, is hewn from similar rock. He joined Vilas in an 87-run partnership which may be seen as the most important of the match. If Durham’s seamers overpitched, Vilas malleted them through midwicket; if they pitched it short Croft hooked them on his way to 35. Home supporters decided that a tub of Howgill Fellside Ice Cream might be in order; it is glorious stuff. In the small hospitality area a drink or two was taken. Sedbergh staff looked at the field they knew so well and marvelled anew. It is only love. Then Croft received a ball from Rimmington which pitched on off stump and stayed there. The former skipper had no hope at all but dropped his bat and then kicked it. Durham’s fielders celebrated but some may have recognised that Lancashire’s lead was already 202 and the visitors will have to get those runs. Bohannon made a useful 23 and Saqib Mahmood was unbeaten on 11 at the close when Vilas had 74 runs against his name. The skipper had taken blows to the arm and hand but was still there. Unvanquished as ever.Suddenly memories of Anderson’s injury began to fade a little but the evening news bulletins were now mad with hunger for news. They will be less ravenous tomorrow when the big parade will be at Chester-le-Street. But at Sedbergh we will watch the last day of a great game. The people up here, and maybe the cricketers, too, deserve something to cherish.

Peter Trego and Azhar Ali hundreds underpin crushing Somerset win

Somerset pair put on double-century stand before rain, with steep asking rate too much for Essex

ECB Reporters Network26-Apr-2019Azhar Ali and Peter Trego hit chanceless centuries as Somerset maintained their impressive start to the season with a 36-run Royal London One-Day Cup win over Essex under Duckworth-Lewis-Stern at Taunton. The pair added 217 for the second wicket, a Somerset record for any wicket in List A games against Essex, Azhar hitting 110 and Trego contributing 141 to a total of 353 for 5 after their team had been invited to bat first in a contest reduced to 39 overs per side.Essex had reached 82 for 3 from 12 overs in reply when rain forced a lengthy stoppage. When the teams went back on at 8.25pm, their target had become a further 109 from five overs and they fell 37 short. The result gave Somerset maximum points from four group matches, while for Essex it was a third defeat in four. Azhar’s hundred was his 17th in List A cricket and Trego’s his tenth. The game got underway at 3pm, two hours after the scheduled start, because of rain. There was no hint of the run-feast to come when Siddle struck in the second over, Tom Banton skying a catch to cover.Somerset’s new floodlights were on from the start. Azhar and Trego began cautiously until the latter cut loose in the seventh over, pulling a six over midwicket off Sam Cook and then lofting him over long-on into the River Tone.Azhar was first to his half-century, off 45 balls, his innings characterised by some wristy off-side shots. The century stand came up off 88 deliveries and Trego brought up his fifty with a straight six off Simon Harmer, having faced 46 balls. The two batsmen, with a combined age of 71, showed all their experience in shot selection, never looking in any bother. Azhar’s first List A century for Somerset and first for the county at Taunton in any competition was reached with a six over extra-cover off Matt Quinn.Azhar Ali made his first one-day hundred for Somerset•Getty ImagesThe former Pakistan ODI captain had faced 84 balls, hitting nine fours and four sixes. Trego went to three figures in the following over off 84 deliveries, with eight fours and four sixes, celebrating as extravagantly as if it had been his first ton.By the time Azhar was caught at long-on off Paul Walter, Somerset were well on course for a winning total. Trego went on to fall six short of his career-best List A score, while Lewis Gregory and James Hildreth cemented their side’s strong position. After five balls of the Essex innings, a shower sent the players back to the dressing rooms. The visitors, on 4 without loss, faced a revised target of 311 off 33 overs when play resumed at 6.35pm and quickly lost Walter, caught behind down the leg-side off Josh Davey for 1.Alastair Cook survived a sharp chance to Lewis Gregory at midwicket on 15 before falling to Craig Overton’s next delivery, wicketkeeper Banton taking a second catch off a thin edge. Tom Westley took 14 off an over from slow left-armer Roelof van der Merwe. But when the tenth over was completed, the number required to constitute a game, Essex were on 71 for 2, 34 behind on DLS.Westley was bowled trying to lift van der Merwe over the leg side and it was raining steadily as he walked off. Shortly afterwards the clouds gathered and the umpires called another halt, with Dan Lawrence unbeaten on 32.Another restart was ordered for 8.25pm. With only a sprinkling of spectators left in the ground, Essex, needing more than 21 an over for the target of 191, added 72 to close on 154 for 6, Lawrence being dismissed for 51.During the interval Somerset made a presentation to Hildreth, who was making his 625th appearance for them in all competitions, the most by any player in the club’s history.

Man Utd could sign Martinez’s dream partner in "top talent" who’s like Van Dijk

Manchester United have had an up-and-down season so far, which has put the club sixth in the Premier League after 19 matches.

Erik ten Hag has been forced to juggle his squad around due to injuries, particularly the centre-back pairing, as Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez, and Harry Maguire are all currently out.

Erik ten Hag wants to add another striker to his side to bolster the attack.

ByTom Lever Dec 28, 2023

With that in mind, the boss wants to add a new defender to the squad in an attempt to bolster his defensive options.

Man Utd transfers latest – Giorgio Scalvini

According to reports in Spain, the Red Devils are interested in acquiring Giorgio Scalvini from Atalanta this winter, who has been described as a “top talent” by Fabrizio Romano.

Real Madrid are also eyeing up a move for the Italian, but Atalanta will demand a fee of around 50m €(£43m) if he is to depart in January.

A move to United next month is unlikely, however, as he is a key player for La Dea, and the English club must abide by the financial fair play guidelines.

Giorgio Scalvini’s style of play

Scalvini burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old at Atalanta, and he was handed his debut by Gian Piero Gasperini in 2021. The defender is now 20 and he has started all but two games in the Serie A for his side.

Despite being right-footed, Scalvini has always played as the wide left centre back of a back three, however, due to his intelligence and well-rounded skillset, he would be the perfect partner for Martinez, and the table below shows why using stats from the 2023/24 Serie A season.

Firstly, Scalvini is a dominant defender who stands at 6 foot 4, yet he is deceivingly fast and can cover ground easily. The ability to recover quickly is a much-needed attribute when playing alongside the Argentinian, as he lacks athleticism in that particular department.

Also, due to the ex-Ajax defender being 5 foot 9, teams have previously targeted his lack of height and taken advantage of it from set pieces, especially. Therefore, having Scalvini, who is dominant in the air, would make United much more secure when defending crosses into the box and long direct balls into the opposition striker.

Furthermore, the Italian international has excellent anticipation and reads the game brilliantly, which helps him have a proactive approach to defending. This is portrayed in his high interceptions and ball recovery statistics. The Atalanta defender is also calm in and out of possession, bringing a nice balance to the defence next to the more aggressive, in-your-face Martinez.

Overall, Ten Hag will be hoping that the Italian can have a Virgil van Dijk impact on his side, as Scalvini is deemed to be a similar player to the Liverpool captain, according to FootballTransfers.

Like Scalvini, the towering Dutchman – who signed for the Merseysiders on a £75m deal back in January 2018 – is also a colossal presence at 6 foot 4, albeit while combining that physical prowess with quality in possession as he averages 4.30 progressive passes per 90 – a metric that the Italian averages 4.95 for.

Signing a 20-year-old for such a large fee often comes with risk and extreme pressure, especially at a club like United, but given the Italian’s experience and maturity, he should cope with the responsibility of wearing the Red Devils badge on his chest.

Essex face daunting task after Sam Northeast's timely reminder

An innings of 169 underpinned Hampshire’s mammoth 525-8 dec and restated Sam Northeast’s considerable talents

Valkerie Baynes at the Ageas Bowl06-Apr-2019Sam Northeast has not given up on finally earning an England call-up and his towering 169 for Hampshire against Essex would have done his chances no harm ahead of a huge summer of international cricket. At 29, Northeast has not featured in the England system since U-19 level – apart from briefly representing the Lions in the Caribbean a year ago. But, while extremely humble and level-headed about his prospects of representing his country, as with most players, the lure of higher honours is undeniable.”It’s sort of just in the back of the mind, you’ve got to always have that goal, it keeps you going,” Northeast said. “But the most important thing is just to score runs for Hampshire.”If anything comes down the line, that would be a bonus but it’s just nice to score runs and nice to get off to a good season.”Resuming on his overnight score of 94, Northeast needed just four balls to bring up his 22nd first-class century and second since joining Hampshire from Kent before the start of last season. He bettered his previous best for Hampshire of 129, scored against Surrey a year ago before a finger injury hampered his debut season for the county in which he played 10 matches and averaged 25.05.”It was a strange year in many ways last year but I feel a lot more settled this year and hopefully it’s going to be a great year for me and the club,” Northeast said.”It’s just important in any season to get up and running and it’s nice to score a big hundred early and hopefully that gives me a bit of confidence to go on and have a big summer, but the important thing is it set us up quite nicely in this game.”Nineteen wickets isn’t going to be easy but hopefully we can make early inroads tomorrow and get in a winning position.”Northeast had hinted at his good form by scoring 118 against Oxford University in a pre-season warm-up and on the real stage he was flawless. He brought up his 150 with a boundary off Simon Harmer and on the next ball delivered a fifth bonus points as Hampshire reached the 400-mark.England World Cup hopeful Liam Dawson brought up his half-century moments later as he and Northeast pressed on towards a record fifth-wicket partnership for Hampshire against Essex of 165.It was Ravi Bopara who broke it when he hit Northeast on the pads with the last ball before lunch. Northeast faced 255 balls for his score, which included 23 fours and a six, as he anchored an innings in which four batsmen passed fifty.Dawson reached 64 before Matt Quinn was rewarded for some tough toil with his wicket, caught behind by stand-in wicketkeeper Will Buttleman, replacing Adam Wheater, who injured his thumb on the opening day and is expected to be out for six weeks.Dawson made his ODI debut against Pakistan in 2016 and played just two more during England’s tour of Sri Lanka last October before being ruled out with a side strain but some handy T20 performances in Bangladesh and Pakistan, along with his latest knock on English soil, cannot have hurt his chances of selection for the World Cup.At the end of the first day’s play, Hampshire’s feeling was that 450 would be a good first-innings total on this flat pitch. They more than achieved their aim, thanks largely to Northeast and Dawson building on some fine work by James Vince, Aiden Markram and Rilee Rossouw on the opening day.Alastair Cook, playing his first Championship match since retiring from international cricket and receiving a knighthood, caught Tom Alsop off the bowling of Harmer for 24, although the former England captain then dropped Gareth Berg on 20.That small blemish mattered little with Bopara holding onto a catch at deep square leg to dismiss Berg for 33 off Harmer and Hampshire immediately declared at 525 for 8.Fidel Edwards, Hampshire’s leading wicket-taker last season, made an early breakthrough in the fourth over of the Essex innings when he bowled Nick Browne for 1, but Cook and Tom Westley saw their way to an early close due to bad light.

Sheff Wed reporter shares injury news from Hillsborough on "brilliant" star

Sheffield Wednesday are slowly looking like they have finally started to turn a corner; however, an injury update regarding one of their key men at Hillsborough has now come to light…

Sheffield Wednesday form…

Last weekend, Sheffield Wednesday finally got their act together to secure a first victory in five Championship matches under Danny Rohl, with goals from Bailey Cadamarteri, Marvin Johnson and Josh Windass securing an impressive 3-1 scoreline over Blackburn Rovers at Hillsborough.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Rohl indicated his belief that the Owls are going in the right direction under his stewardship, saying:

"My team fought until the end, they believe in what we are doing and I am so happy to take the points.

"We scored three goals today, in the past we spoke about how we could score. We are going in the right direction. I have spoken about bringing our xG higher and higher, it is a good step forward and after this game it is great to see."

Coupled with a draw against Leicester City in their previous home match, Sheffield Wednesday finally look to be generating some positive momentum; nevertheless, the South Yorkshire side are still rooted to the bottom of the league standings and find themselves 10 points adrift of Huddersfield Town in 21st point, leaving a mountain to climb if the Owls have designs on spectacularly avoiding the drop this term.

Taking a result against Stoke City on Saturday could be another important step to boosting their chances of a miraculous escape from relegation; however, an injury update has now emerged regarding one of their key men ahead of the match.

Dominic Iorfa injury update…

As shared by reliable Owls reporter Joe Crann, Sheffield Wednesday boss Rohl has given an update on the status of defender Dominic Iorfa, who is undergoing scans for a muscle problem sustained against Blackburn Rovers and looks a doubt for the weekend.

Rohl stated: "We have to look, but it looks not so good – we’ll see in the next days some scans, and then we’ll see what we can do and when he is available again. At the moment, though, it’s difficult to say – and it’ll be hard for him to play this weekend."

Dominic Iorfa in action for Sheffield Wednesday.

Labelled "brilliant" by club captain Barry Bannan, Iorfa has been ever present for the Owls this term, making 17 assists across all competitions and contributing a solitary assist into the bargain (Iorfa statistics – Transfermarkt).

In a difficult campaign for his current employers, the former England Under-21 international has also been a domineering presence in the air, winning around 2.2 duels per match in the English second-tier (Iorfa statistics – WhoScored).

Despite this, news of his potential absence this weekend may come as a huge blow to Sheffield Wednesday as they eye a chance to go three games unbeaten for the first time this campaign.

Warwickshire set up title decider with Kent

Dom Sibley gorged plentifully upon a meaningless day, but the real action takes place next week at Edgbaston

Paul Edwards21-Sep-2018

ScorecardAt 4.20 this afternoon Tim Ambrose played an innocuous ball from Ben Brown into the on side. The bowler fielded it, Paul Baldwin called over and Warwickshire declared. The game ended in a draw and the players shook hands. Receiving particular congratulations, perhaps, was Dom Sibley, who had batted through the day for 144 not outThe handshakes marked two events, one of them specific to the moment, the other curiously timeless. They confirmed Warwickshire’s promotion and they brought the first-class season at Hove to an end. The first of these had been certain for hours barring the intervention of God or Jofra Archer. This draw leaves Jeetan Patel’s side equal on points with Kent, who have won two matches more. Whichever side takes more points from next week’s game between the sides at Edgbaston will be Second Division champions. And across England cricket is softly drawing down its blinds. All the counties are playing next week but there are matches at only nine grounds, of course. Most of the season’s serious work is done. Monday afternoon in Brighton seems suddenly distant with its warmth and careless leisure: the aroma of cannabis in North Laine; beach volleyball near Kings Road; the glittering water. Then there were catamarans drawn up on the shingle, their names a curious confection of aggression, fondness and titillation: Tiger, Ethel, Seymour Butts.Time now to earn the right – Gillespie

Jason Gillespie, Sussex head coach: “We’ve had a couple of losses in the past month but we feel some progress has been made. I wanted to give some young guys the opportunity to show what they can do and they’ve done that. Now I’ve got to find the balance between giving lads games of cricket and earning the right to play first-class cricket. We’ve got to find the right balance between potential and performances. It’s a difficult balancing act but we’ll get there. The lads have played the game the right way, been positive and looked to win games.”

Some mornings this week there have been floodlights, mild air and the churn of the Channel glimpsed through the great arcade of trees on Selborne Road. Today, though, the atmosphere was not so clotted and the sun was in generous attendance. Only the temperature reminded one this is autumn. “Seaward the water / Is satin, pale emerald, fretted with lace at the edges / The whole sky rinsed easy like nerves after pain,” wrote Alan Ross in his poem, “Cricket at Brighton.”Sussex supporters were presented with three wickets as rewards for their loyalty this sparkling day. In the fifth over of the morning Will Rhodes shuffled much too far across his crease and was leg before to Ollie Robinson for 88. Then Ian Bell suffered bruising to his right thumb when hit by a ball from Robinson and had to retire hurt.Out strode Jonathan Trott, a batsman who had spent over five hours earlier this week scoring his seventh career century against Sussex. “Jesus Christ!” exclaimed a blasphemous Sussex adherent with a passing knowledge of the Book of Hebrews. “The same yesterday, today and for ever more.” But his fears were misplaced on the two latter counts: Trott made only 8 before clipping Chris Jordan to Harry Finch at midwicket and he is retiring next week in any case.Despite these two dismissals and one injury, the game was soon ambling quietly towards stalemate. In the afternoon session Robinson sent down some fairly respectable off-spin and Sussex used three wicketkeepers, albeit not all at once. Phil Salt and Michael Burgess bowled their maiden spells in first-class cricket. The flagpoles bent in the breeze and some players’ caps blew off. The game drifted into late afternoon and the over rate was plus 12 at one stage. A draw could have been agreed at teatime and perhaps it should have been.Sibley spent the rest of the day filling his boots which, if his feet are in proportion to the rest of him, was some achievement. He put on 168 for the third wicket with Sam Hain, who had made 90 when he chased a wide one from Salt and edged a catch to wicketkeeper Harry Finch. The ecstatic Salt raced off like Mick the Miller but was eventually mobbed by his equally delighted team-mates. If you had told the uninitiated that the cricket had a gentle, addictive beauty about it, they might have called for an unmarked van and a straitjacket.
