Ben Stokes: 'Their skill was better than ours on this occasion'

Ben Stokes refused to criticise his side’s second-innings batting effort after England saw an opportunity to square the series with victory in Ranchi slip by. Having taken a lead of 46 on first innings, England were bowled out for 145 on day three, in conditions Stokes described as close to “impossible” to bat on, as India regrouped to secure a five-wicket win on the fourth afternoon.Only Zak Crawley, who made his third half-century of the series, and Jonny Bairstow, with 30 off 42, provided scores of note as England steadily lost momentum after a positive start. Ben Foakes grafted almost an hour and a half for 17 off 76 balls while batting with the tail, with England losing their last seven wickets for 35 runs from 25.5 overs, India’s spin trio of R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav sharing all ten wickets between them.Victory for India saw them take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series ahead of the final Test in Dharamsala, starting on March 7.Related

Asked about his side’s batting overall at the post-match presentation, Stokes said, “I think we’ve been good in periods. If we look at yesterday, when we had our turn with bat, [it was] I think – I don’t want to say impossible, because I don’t think anything is impossible – but that was incredibly hard yesterday, when you get conditions against Ashwin, Jadeja and Kuldeep like that. Scoring becomes very, very hard, especially when you want to eke the game out as long as we wanted to do.”We didn’t think the pitch was going to get any better, and I think we’ve seen that today. So look, I think the way in which the Indian spinners operated yesterday made it incredibly hard for us to score but also to rotate the strike. That little period there was very, very tough.”Cricket is a game of skill against skill, isn’t it?” he added, speaking to TNT Sport. “When you look at it like that, skill vs skill their skill was better than ours on this occasion.”Having been set a target of 192 to win, India’s openers proceeded to knock off 40 in eight overs before close on day three. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal then took their stand to 84 the next morning before Joe Root made the breakthrough for England. That triggered a spell in which India lost 5 for 36 either side of lunch, as Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir cranked up the pressure, before an unbroken partnership of 72 between Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel took India home.”I think it was a great Test match,” Stokes said. “If you look at the scoreboard, India win my five wickets, I don’t think it really gives enough credit to the game as a whole. The amount of ebbs and flows, every single day that happened, and I’ve got to give so much credit to our spinners, Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir. To come out and put in that performance throughout the whole Test match, but in particular today, being exposed in situations like that at such an early start of their career, I mean, incredible. I couldn’t be more proud of those two in particular, but obviously very proud of the team throughout this whole week and what we’ve thrown at India.”Bashir, the 20-year-old offspinner playing his second Test, claimed the first five-wicket haul of his first-class career in India’s first innings, going on to finish with match figures of 8 for 198, while Hartley picked up 4 for 138 to move ahead of Jasprit Bumrah as the leading wicket-taker for the series. Between them, they bowled 51 of the 61 overs in India’s second innings.Although Hartley’s seven-for on debut had helped bowl England to victory in the first Test in Hyderabad, as a marker of the attack’s inexperience, Ranchi was only the eighth time he had bowled in the fourth innings of a first-class game. Bashir had done so once previously for Somerset, delivering two overs as Surrey knocked off a target of 29.”It was amazing,” Stokes told TNT. “Not only the way in which they performed but I think their character as well. It should be very, very intimidating for two young spinners at the start of their careers to come out on day four to try and bowl India out for a pretty small target. We thought we were always in the game because of the wicket, and not once did they take a backward step, not once did you look at their body language or their enthusiasm towards the game and think that we were beat.”Shoaib Bashir struck off consecutive deliveries after lunch to bring England back in the contest•Getty Images

Of his approach to captaining his young spin attack on tour, which has also included 19-year-old Rehan Ahmed, Stokes said, “That’s the way I am as a person. That’s who I am as a captain. It’s allowing these young guys to come into a pretty intimidating situation, Test cricket against India, who are an incredibly hard team to come out here and play against and, you know, just allowing them the freedom to run up and treat every ball as an occasion rather than thinking about something that’s already happening and can’t be changed.”I think so far this series, not only has that brought out a lot of talent not only for us, but also for India. I’m a massive cricket fan, I love Test cricket. And I think on both sides, we’ve seen some young, inexperienced players come out and I think the future is great for Test cricket.”England’s third defeat in a row after having taken a surprise 1-0 lead, means Stokes and Brendon McCullum have suffered their first series loss since taking charge of the Test team in the summer of 2022. But Stokes praised the effort put in by his players, without focusing too much on the result – much as he had done through a run of 13 wins in 18 matches prior to coming to India.”You come into series and obviously want to win, you want to win games of cricket,” he said. “But you know, I’ve been here for two years and my message is consistent. It’s about the input that everyone gives to the team. If you worry too much about the output, I think we’re not committing as much as we can do as individuals and as a team. Everyone, every Test match here has thrown absolutely everything they can out in the field. Nothing has ever been left out on that field. And that’s all we ask of our players.”

Zimbabwe clinch last-ball thriller after Madhevere hat-trick

Shariz Ahmad’s maiden five-for in vain as Netherlands fall short by one run

In a match that ebbed and flowed right till the final ball, Zimbabwe held their nerve to beat Netherlands by one run in the second ODI in Harare. The win helped them level the three-match series 1-1.Batting first, fifties from Sean Williams and Clive Madande kept Zimbabwe chugging along, but legspinner Shariz Ahmad’s maiden five-wicket haul saw the hosts lose their last five wickets in just 47 runs and be bowled out for 271.In reply, Netherlands were on course for a big chunk of the game with Max’O Dowd and Tom Cooper leading the way. Wessly Madhevere, though, turned the game on its head with a hat-trick – the third by a Zimbabwe bowler in ODIs.With Netherlands requiring 19 in the final over and just one wicket in hand, Zimbabwe seemed to have the game in the bag. But Tendai Chatara went for 15 runs off his first five balls to cause a few flutters. However, with four needed off the last ball, Fred Klaassen was unable to dispatch a low full toss past wide long-off.Earlier, Zimbabwe started well with Craig Ervine and Madhevere adding 61 in 11 overs for the opening stand before the former was cleaned up by Colin Ackermann for 39 off 42. Gary Ballance struck three fours but was dismissed for 14. Shariz then got into the act, getting rid of Madhevere and Sikandar Raza in the space of three balls to stifle Zimbabwe. In his next over, the legspinner induced a top edge of Ryan Burl’s blade to make it 120 for 5.Williams and Madande revived the innings by adding 104 runs off 93 balls for the sixth wicket. Williams struck 77 off 73 balls, while Madande hit his second successive half-century. But Shariz struck back. He first removed Williams, who top-edged a sweep to deep-backward square leg, and two balls later trapped Brad Evans lbw to complete his five-for.O’Dowd gave Netherlands a quick start even though his opening partner Vikramjit Singh managed only 14 off 25. O’Dowd and Cooper then kept the Zimbabwe bowlers at bay for 25.2 overs, adding 125 runs for the second wicket. But then Cooper was run-out, and a few overs later, Raza had O’Dowd lbw.But it was Madhevere’s three strikes that put Zimbabwe ahead. In the 44th over of the innings, he first had Ackermann stumped for 28. With his next ball, a quick offbreak, he castled opening ODI’s hero Teja Nidamanuru before claiming his hat-trick with a similar fast offspinning delivery that rattled Paul van Meekeren stumps.Madhevere’s hat-trick left Netherlands struggling at 213 for 6. With the required rate rising every over, captain Scott Edwards tried his best to take his side closer to the target. He struck 36 off 28 balls before falling to Raza. Raza would have thought he had all but sealed the game when he removed Musa Ahmed as well three balls later.Klaassen and Ryan Klein, though, made the Zimbabwe camp very nervous in the final over but failed to close the game.

It's a tricky draw for Man Utd and it looks like they are set to be without at least one of their biggest stars for the challenge, if not more.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Red Devils were without a number of notable names for Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool in their latest pre-season friendly and it will have concerned fans to see all of Rolfo, Grace Clinton, Leah Galton, Melvine Malard and Rachel Williams absent. Speaking about those missing after the game, Skinner explained that while most of those players should be back soon, Rolfo is "probably a few weeks away yet".

  • WHAT SKINNER SAID

"Mel was a little bit of a hip [issue]. Hopefully [she] will be back for the PSV game," Skinner said, rattling through the absentees. "Leah, we're just watching. [She] may be back for the PSV game, and I look at Fridolina, she's just come in so we're assessing her. She'd had a knock when she was going into the Euros, so we're just making sure she's healthy and she's probably a few weeks away yet – but we'd rather treat her carefully as she's going to be an excellent signing. Grace had a little niggle, so we're just protecting her as well, and obviously Rach has been back on the field."

There was some positive news on Wednesday, though, as Millie Turner returned to action. The centre-back was in contention for England's squad at Euro 2025 before suffering a foot fracture at the end of May which ruled her out of the tournament before the squad was revealed. She came off the bench in the 2-2 draw in what is a boost to the Red Devils ahead of next week's big games.

"All in all, they're coming back," Skinner said. "There's nothing really sinister. We're just going to make sure, especially at the start of the season, we don't risk too many people too soon, but they'll be ready in the next few weeks and they'll help us massively."

Bacher asks CSA to 'explain decision-making process' in Teeger case

Security claims made by board described as “trumped up and bogus” by South African Jewish Board of Deputies

Ali Bacher, the man who oversaw South African cricket’s reintegration after apartheid, has asked CSA to provide “a comprehensive explanation of the decision-making process” that led to the removal of David Teeger as Under-19 captain a week before the age-group World Cup being staged in the country.Bacher, who is related to Teeger through his wife, said doubt had been cast on CSA’s explanation of security concerns after the board failed to provide justification for its decision on safety grounds at a meeting with the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD) on Tuesday. In a statement issued on the eve of the tournament, which will see South Africa play West Indies in Potchefstroom on Friday, Bacher conveyed his “dismay and concern” over CSA’s decision to stand Teeger down and asked for “transparent and open discourse” on the matter. Specifically, Bacher asked CSA to disclose four things: The security reports that influenced this decision. A comprehensive explanation of the decision-making process. The specific factors and insights that led to the removal of the captaincy. Clarification on whether there were any external pressures placed on them that led to the decision.Bacher’s intervention comes after CSA invited the SAJBD to a meeting, four days after Teeger’s removal. At a press conference after the meeting, the SAJBD alleged that CSA’s delegates started by telling them they had received a report from state security and then that they had a briefing with state security, but would not reveal who they had dealt with. The SAJBD left dissatisfied and said in a statement that CSA’s “vacillating and contradictory responses” led them to believe any security concerns were “trumped up and bogus”.The SAJBD accused CSA of anti-semitism and of allowing “high-level political interference” but when asked for proof of any government intervention, said they did not have any. They also demanded CSA reinstate Teeger, which has not happened.Related

David Teeger dismissal cuts across South African politics

Juan James has been named captain in Teeger’s place while CSA has denied any political involvement in its decision-making.Teeger was thrust into the spotlight in October when he was named the Rising Star at the ABSA Jewish Achiever Awards ceremony. In his acceptance speech, he dedicated the award to “young soldiers in Israel”, a statement which was reported in the media and attracted complaints from the Palestinian Solidarity Alliance (PSA), sponsors, cricket clubs and concerned citizens.CSA referred the complaints to advocate Wim Trengrove, who conducted an independent adjudication into whether Teeger had breached the code of conduct of CSA or his provincial team, the Lions, and found that he had not. Trengrove’s reasoning was based on the constitutional right to freedom of expression, while he also determined that Teeger did not engage in any unbecoming or detrimental conduct. CSA accepted the report and confirmed Teeger as the Under-19 team’s captain on December 8.A month later, after protests at Newlands during the New Year’s Test between South Africa and India and the South African government’s decision to bring a case of genocide against Israel at the International Court of Justice, CSA announced Teeger’s axing, citing security concerns. Teeger remains part of the squad and is expected to play in South Africa’s matches, raising further questions over whether his safety would only be compromised if he was leading the team. CSA said it believed taking him out of that role would “lower the temperature” of the issue.Protests are planned for the under-19 World Cup and while Bacher recognised the rights of South Africans to protest, he believes “it is the responsibility of CSA and South African law enforcement entities to ensure safety at all sporting events. The alternative is that the threat of using violence dictates policy.”ESPNcricinfo understands that the PSA has been granted a permit to protest outside the stadium in Potchefstroom while other demonstrations are also expected – including the possibility of counter-protests.In a pre-tournament statement, CSA said that it “respects the right to lawful protests,” but went on to “emphasise that these cannot interfere with the matches or compromise the safety of players and fans. To this end, we are collaborating closely with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to ensure that the tournament proceeds smoothly and without any disruptions.”Extra security measures are understood to be in place at all five tournament venues.

Chelsea now racing Bayern Munich for "fantastic" £33m GK amid Sanchez woes

Chelsea are now racing Bayern Munich for a “fantastic” goalkeeper, amid Robert Sanchez’s struggles this season, according to a report.

Sanchez struggling in the Premier League

No player has made more errors leading to goals in the Premier League than Sanchez this season, with the Spanish goalkeeper making five costly mistakes, which could have big ramifications on whether the Blues qualify for the Champions League.

After being at fault for a goal against Wolverhampton Wanderers back in January, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher suggested the 27-year-old is not good enough for a club of Chelsea’s stature.

“We just keep getting signs, as I think we’ve always probably known, that Sanchez is a Premier League goalkeeper but maybe for a team in the bottom half of the table, not the top half.”

Wow: Chelsea now preparing stunning £151m bid to sign two Real Madrid stars

The Blues have set their sights on two attackers who currently play for the reigning champions of Europe.

ByDominic Lund Mar 18, 2025

Since then, Enzo Maresca has made the call to take the goalkeeper out of the side, benching him for four Premier League games on the spin, with Filip Jorgensen taking his place, although Sanchez has since returned to the starting XI.

That said, Maresca clearly has reservations about the former Brighton & Hove Albion man, and a report from Italy has now revealed the Blues are now in the race to sign AS Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar, alongside Bayern Munich.

AS Roma'sMileSvilar

Svilar is currently locked in contract talks with Roma, given that his current deal is set to expire in 2027, and while he retains a good relationship with the Italian side, his loyalty could be tested if Maresca’s side decide to make an approach.

West Ham United and AFC Bournemouth have also been linked with moves for the goalkeeper, although there is a feeling his agents could simply be fabricating the interest to ensure their client gets the possible deal with Roma.

"Fantastic" Svilar has been "revelation" for Roma

Roma boss Claudio Ranieri recently singled out the Serbian for praise, saying: “Mile is having a fantastic season.

“When a goalkeeper is not very busy and is suddenly called into action, showing readiness at all times like Mile does, then it means that he is truly a great goalkeeper.”

Freelance scout Ben Mattinson has also dubbed the 25-year-old a “revelation for Roma”, while praising him for his ability to stop crosses and distribute the ball.

Not only that, but the Roma star has outperformed Sanchez on a number of key goalkeeping metrics over the past year.

Most recently, Svilar was valued between £29-33m, which would make him a relatively affordable option for Chelsea, and there are clear signs he could be an upgrade on Sanchez, who has let his side down on too many occasions this season.

Liverpool line up club-record bid for "incredible" £100m+ ex-Man City star

Liverpool are now lining up a club-record bid to sign an “incredible” former Manchester City player, who could cost over £100m this summer, according to a report.

Reds eyeing Darwin Nunez replacements

Darwin Nunez has received widespread criticism this season, and there were suggestions the Uruguayan could make a move to Saudi Arabia during the January transfer window, although he ultimately ended up staying at Anfield.

However, it is clear the end could be near for Nunez, as the Reds are stepping up their pursuit of a new striker, and a recent report has revealed they have opened talks over a deal for RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.

Contact has also been made with the representatives of Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, but the Sweden international will not come cheap, as the Magpies are looking to hold out for a fee of £148m for their talisman.

"Tenacious" £50m Premier League ace "close" to move with Liverpool in pole

As such, Isak may be unattainable this summer, and another option is seemingly moving up the list of targets, with a report from Anfield Watch revealing Liverpool are now lining up a club-record bid to sign Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.

The Spanish club value Alvarez very highly, and it may take an offer of over £100m to tempt them into a sale, but the Reds are undeterred by the valuation, having been keen on the forward for quite some time.

Atletico Madrid'sJulianAlvarezscores a penalty during the penalty shootout wich is later disallowed after a VAR review

Prior to the former Manchester City man’s move to La Liga, talks were held with Pep Guardiola’s side, but an agreement could not be struck, given the high asking price and an insistence that Luis Diaz would be used as a makeweight.

There could be a new approach made for the 25-year-old, however, as he is viewed internally as a perfect fit for Arne Slot’s side, given his work-rate, ability to play in multiple positions, and keen eye for goal.

"Incredible" Alvarez is proven at the top level

During his time with Manchester City, the striker was lauded as “incredible” by Guardiola, who also praised him for the “massive” contribution he made to their success.

Despite having a penalty ruled out in controversial fashion against Real Madrid earlier this week, the Argentina international has gone on to impress at Atletico Madrid, too, racking up a remarkable 22 goals and five assists in all competitions.

That said, considering the Atletico star is contracted until 2030, it may be very difficult to prise him away from the Spanish side this summer, and some other targets mentioned in the report may be more attainable.

The Reds are said to hold a good relationship with RB Leipzig, which could give them the edge in the race for Sesko, while Isak is believed to be keen on a move to Merseyside.

Imagine him & Dorgu: Man Utd enter talks to sign £55m Quenda alternative

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has only been in the role for four months, but he’s already made some impressive additions to help bolster the first-team squad.

His first signing as Red Devils boss saw him complete a £30m deal for left-back Patrick Dorgu from Italian side Lecce, looking to put an end to their crisis in such an area.

The Dane may have already received a red card, but when he has been available, the 20-year-old has impressed, with arguably his most impressive coming in the 4-1 triumph over Real Sociedad.

Dorgu

Given his tender age, he has the ability to nail down his place in the side for many years to come, whilst also having the potential to improve further down the line.

He could be aided in his attempts in wide areas by one player who’s been on the club’s radar in recent days ahead of the opening of the transfer window in a couple of months.

Man Utd enter talks to land £55m talent

According to GIVEMESPORT, United have entered talks to sign Southampton’s teenage sensation Tyler Dibling ahead of a potential move next season.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at St Mary’s despite the Saints’ struggles this season, featuring in 25 Premier League matches and often being the shining light.

Southampton's TylerDiblingcelebrates scoring their third goal with Mateus Fernandes

He’s so far managed to register two goals but is able to operate in either of the two central roles behind the striker or a wing-back role in Amorim’s system – making him a superb versatile option.

However, the side who are bottom of the Premier League set a £55m price tag for his services in recent months, with United having to fork out a small fortune if they want to sign him this window.

Despite the huge fee, he could prove to be a solid addition for the Red Devils, allowing them to forget about missing out on a player who’d previously worked under Amorim.

How Dibling compares to Quenda in 2024/25

Ever since the 40-year-old replaced Erik ten Hag at the helm as United manager, winger Geovany Quenda has been touted as a potential signing given his time under him at Sporting CP.

However, the 17-year-old won’t be moving to Manchester in the near future, after Chelsea agreed a deal in the region of £42m for the teenager, with the Portuguese talent spending next season on loan at the Liga Portugal outfit.

He’s signed a seven-year contract with Enzo Maresca’s side, with the Blues investing in yet another young player for the future, ending United’s pursuit of the star.

However, it could see them targeting Dibling, offering an impressive option for Amorim, especially if his stats from the current campaign are anything to go by.

The 19-year-old has matched or bettered Quenda in numerous key areas, showcasing his quality and highlighting how much of a superb signing he would be for the Red Devils.

Dibling, who’s previously been dubbed “incredible” by journalist Kaustubh Pandey, may have registered fewer combined goals and assists, but he has managed to complete more dribbles per 90 this season.

He’s also won more duels and fouls per 90, having the pace and direct nature to cause the opposition endless problems, only getting better with age, with Dibling still just 19.

Missing out on Quenda would undoubtedly have been a huge disappointment to many supporters, especially with the youngster moving to one of their Premier League rivals.

However, Dibling has showcased he’s just as capable of filling the void at Old Trafford, with the £55m fee potentially a bargain if he continues on his current trajectory.
