Farke could unearth surprise Gnonto replacement in 18 y/o Leeds academy whiz

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke had plenty to deal with throughout the summer transfer window as players flooded in and out of Elland Road.

The likes of Tyler Adams, Rodrigo, Max Wober, Robin Koch, and Jack Harrison, among others, departed either permanently or on loan after the club suffered relegation from the Premier League.

Three months on and the Whites are currently third in the Championship and vying for an instant return to the top-flight but that has not stopped speculation over the future of their players.

TEAMtalk reported at the end of October that sources close to the player believe that a January transfer away from Yorkshire is possible for Wilfried Gnonto.

Leeds forward Wilfried Gnonto.

Lazio, Roma, and Everton are all said to be keen on the £25m-rated dynamo and this means that Farke could lose another first-team squad member.

However, the German head coach could unearth a surprise replacement for the 20-year-old forward in current Leeds academy whiz Connor Douglas.

Gnonto's season in numbers

The Italy international has one goal, one assist, and zero 'big chances' created in 13 Championship appearances for the club so far this season.

He is a versatile attacker who can play on either flank or through the middle as a number ten or centre-forward but has not produced the quality to go alongside that versatility this term.

Gnonto has started six league matches under Farke and this shows that his lack of contributions in the final third have not been down to a lack of chances.

It could, therefore, be a shrewd piece of business for the club to cash in on the young gem if the likes of Everton, Roma, and Lazio come in with offers, as his performances have been less-than-impressive this season.

Connor Douglas' Leeds statistics

Supporters may expect the club to dip into the transfer market to find a replacement if they do decide to sell Gnonto but Farke could use his willingness to offer chances to young players to unearth a surprise heir.

Douglas is a versatile forward, like the Italian prospect, who can play out wide on either flank and he has showcased his potential at youth level for the Whites.

The 18-year-old winger burst onto the scene with the U18s and plundered six goals and three assists in 23 appearances – with all of those goal contributions coming in 15 league matches last term.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

He earned himself a promotion to the U21s towards the end of the 2022/23 campaign and has racked up four goals in ten matches at that age group to date.

This means that he has 13 goals and assists combined in 33 appearances for the academy – one involvement every 2.53 matches – in comparison to the current senior ace's two in 13 Championship outings – one involvement every 6.5 clashes.

These statistics show that the talented whiz, who only turned 18 in October, has produced goals and assists far more frequently at youth level than Gnonto has for the first-team this season.

Of course, there is no guarantee that Douglas will be able to translate his form over to the senior squad but his impressive displays should not go unnoticed and Farke could look to offer him a chance to stake a claim for a place in the side if Gnonto moves on.

The head coach has already proven that age and inexperience is not a significant issue for him as 17-year-old Archie Gray has played 18 league games so far this term.

Arteta must unleash Arsenal’s "exceptional" 5 ft 10 maestro vs Brentford

Arsenal return to Premier League duty this evening as they take on Brentford at the Emirates, and they will be hoping to secure all three points which would take them top of the table.

This would depend on the final result between Manchester City and Liverpool in the early kickoff on Saturday, but a win would prove that Mikel Arteta’s men are going to be title challengers once again.

The Spaniard may make a change or two from the last tie against Burnley prior to the international break, but much will depend on whether a couple of players are ready to be unleashed in the starting XI.

Arsenal team news vs Brentford

Arteta discussed a few of his players while speaking to the press on Friday morning, most notably Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard.

He said: "He [Jesus] is available. He played 96 mins in a really competitive match.

"He had a long flight. I have to see the condition."

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

With regard to Odegaard, the manager sounded hopeful that he would play a part in the match, saying: "Hopefully yes. We have another training session today."

If the Norwegian maestro is ready to play, then he must be included in the starting XI this evening as he could make the difference.

Martin Odegaard’s season in numbers

The 24-year-old enjoyed his best campaign to date last season as he registered 23 goal contributions – 15 goals and eight assists – in the top flight, and it so nearly helped the club win a first title since 2004.

He hasn’t quite been at this scintillating best during the current campaign, but he has still scored five times and grabbed an assist while missing four matches through injury.

martin-odegaard-arsenal-Henrikh-Mykhitaryan-as-roma-transfer-arteta-edu

The 5 foot 10 gem was hailed as “exceptional” by City manager Pep Guardiola – underlining how good he has been recently – and if the Gunners hope to have any sort of success this season, Odegaard will be vital.

The former Real Madrid starlet currently ranks first among the squad for shots on target per game (1.1) in the Premier League, along with ranking second for big chances created (two), third for key passes per game (1.7) and fifth for successful dribbles per game (0.8), indicating just how effective he has been going forward.

Arteta started Kai Havertz in his place in midfield against Burnley, yet the German international failed to have the required impact, making just one key pass during his 59 minutes on the pitch, while completing only 17 accurate passes during the match.

Havertz has scored only once in an Arsenal shirt since joining from Chelsea, and he hasn’t quite hit the ground running in north London.

Arteta must now start Arsenal's "clinical" dynamo over "lively" returning ace

Mikel Arteta will have some choices to make ahead of the fixture…

ByRosie Tudball Nov 25, 2023

This could lead to Arteta boldly ditching the former Blues man in place of Odegaard, who would clearly have a much bigger impact.

A return to the starting XI for the skipper would give the supporters a massive boost and could spur them to victory against the Bees.

If Arteta can keep the Norwegian sensation fit and healthy for the remainder of the campaign, the north London side will have a wonderful chance of claiming their first Premier League title in 20 years.

Arteta won't rush his recovery, however, but if he is ready, the 24-year-old must be unleashed from the first whistle today.

Ten Hag must now ditch Man Utd liability with fewer touches than Onana

Just when it looked like Manchester United were finally embarking on a decent run of form, they run into Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City juggernaut.

City came away from Old Trafford with a resounding 3-0 win that piles the pressure on Erik ten Hag and the Red Devils have never looked so poor.

It is a stark contrast to their solid debut campaign under the Dutchman, where they won a trophy and qualified for the Champions League, yet there have been too many players who have failed to really kick on and assert their dominance from 2022/23.

Marcus Rashford is a key example, as the Englishman has been a shadow of his former self recently and was practically non-existent during the Manchester derby.

Marcus Rashford's game in numbers

Rashford was deployed in his usual position on the left wing yet he once again failed to have the required impact that Ten Hag needed in a game of this magnitude.

The £300k-per-week gem was on the pitch for 86 minutes, but he completed just 11 passes and took only 28 touches, looking completely isolated.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford.

The winger also failed to have a single shot on target, missed a big chance while succeeding with just one of his five dribble attempts, and performances like these simply can’t be tolerated anymore.

What made matters worse is that his display against the Citizens was so poor that even Andre Onana had more influence in possession of the ball, completing 32 passes and registering 55 touches, 27 more than the aforementioned Englishman, as per Sofascore.

If the Old Trafford side wish to challenge for the top honours, being reliant on someone like Rashford, who is very much Jekyll and Hyde this season, is a recipe for disaster.

Marcus Rashford's season in numbers

During the 2022/23 campaign, the 25-year-old registered a mammoth 41 goal contributions – 30 goals and 11 assists – across 56 matches, and it finally looked as though he had a manager who could bring out the best in him.

This has proven to be a false dawn, however, as his goal contributions have dried up altogether, with the player managing to score just once while grabbing three assists during the current season; dismal form indeed.

Marcus Rashford

Journalist Jonas Adnan Giæver described Rashford as “misfiring” recently due to his lack of threat in the opposition penalty area and this is a big cause of concern for the Dutchman.

Perhaps a spell out of the team would be a wise move, allowing someone like Alejandro Garnacho to come in and stake his claim for a regular slot in the starting XI.

Indeed, the young Argentinian has scored the same amount of goals as Rashford during the current campaign and given Ten Hag needs a greater attacking threat, the 19-year-old could take advantage of the situation.

The display against City was lethargic, insipid and downright woeful, yet unless Ten Hag makes the big calls and takes chances on talented youngsters, nothing will change and Rashford will continue to look isolated on the left wing.

The hosts opened up the scoring 14 minutes into the match through winger Jared Stroud. However, the Herons responded 10 minutes later with a goal from Ecuadorian striker Leonardo Campana. A first MLS assist for new signing Federico Redondo, the Argentine found Campana for a clinical finish.

Heading into the halftime break at a deadlock, Tata Martino brought on Miami leading-scorer Luis Suarez in the 62nd minute, and the Uruguayan put on a show.

He put the Herons up 2-1 in controversial fashion 10 minutes after coming onto the pitch, scoring off a brilliant counter-attack. However, prior to the finish, it appeared that Inter Miami committed a handball offense in their own box – only to see VAR say no, and hand the Herons the goal.

Suarez added to his tally to put the game away in the 85th minute with a cheeky finish to make it 3-1, handing Miami their third win of the MLS season. A late D.C. red card put things to bed, when Pedro Santos was removed for denying a goalscoring opportunity in the 90th minute.

Christian Benteke scored a hat-trick in his first game of the season for D.C. United in 2024, but missed matchweeks two and three due to injury. Saturday was his return to the starting XI for Troy Lesense's squad, and he put on a strong showing, despite the defeat.

    THE MVP

Luis Suarez: The best player on the pitch Saturday only played 28 minutes, but boy did he make an impact. Two goals to add to his tally, he now has four goals in MLS, but across all competitions, he has six goals and five assists. A stunning cameo to singlehandedly win Miami the game, the brilliant 37-year-old made his impact, handing them a victory without Messi on the pitch.

    THE BIG LOSER

The Inter Miami defense: Another day, another injury for the Herons. They lost Argentine defender Nicolas Freire 31 minutes into the match. Their defense is already the weakest part of their squad, so losing a starting centerback is a disaster for Tata Martino's team, especially with no Lionel Messi in the team until further notice.

They'll have to figure things out soon if they want to succeed week-in and week-out, because lapses on their back line have doomed them throughout the season so far. They were lucky to have Suarez in the second half, because without him, the result may not have been as favorable.

Rangers: Bisgrove can land first blinder with swoop for "exciting" 4-3-3 boss

Glasgow Rangers chief James Bisgrove and the rest of the board are currently going through the process of finding the club's next permanent manager after the Ibrox side made the collective decision to part ways with Michael Beale.

What's the latest on Kjetil Knutsen to Rangers?

Journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that Kjetil Knutsen was due to be contacted by Rangers at the end of last week.

The reporter added that he may still be a live option for the Light Blues, among other possible candidates, but the Norwegian boss may not be keen on advertising his interest in the role due to still being contracted to another team.

Bodo/Glimt head coach Kjetil Knutsen.

This came after New York Times' Rory Smith, whilst speaking on the BBC Radio 5 Live Monday Night Club (2 October), tipped the title-winning Bodo/Glimt boss to be under consideration for the job earlier this month.

How many trophies has Knutsen won?

The 4-3-3 tactician has won two titles in his last three seasons with Bodo/Glimt and is currently on track to make it three in four this term.

His side are currently top of the division, with 55 points from 24 matches, and have six remaining games to secure another league crown.

A move to Rangers before the end of the international break would prevent him from being able to see out the job, which could be a possible stumbling block if the timing is not right for Kntusen to move on, but his record up to this point has been particularly impressive.

The Bodo/Glimt tinkerer has proven himself to be capable of managing a team to a title, and this is why he is an attractive target for the Scottish giants, who have not won the Scottish Premiership since the 2020/21 campaign.

He showcased his ability to coach an attacking team during the 2020 campaign as his team racked up a staggering 103 league goals in 30 outings on their way to the title.

Journalist Josh Bunting once claimed that Knutsen would make Bournemouth "exciting" and attack-minded, which is backed up by the aforementioned statistics.

The Norwegian boss could produce an attacking style of play that would give fans something to get behind after Beale failed to excite supporters or bring success to Ibrox.

Journalist Graham Spiers described the English head coach's football as "hapless" and it did not result in tangible success for the Light Blues as the ex-QPR chief failed to win a single trophy during his spell at the club.

Bodo/Glimt boss Kjetil Knutsen.

Knutsen, on the other hand, has a track record of playing an attractive style that brings titles and plenty of goals during his time with Bodo/Glimt.

Whilst there is no guarantee that he will be able to translate his methods over to Scottish football, the 55-year-old coach's sublime statistics with his current club suggest that it is a worthy gamble for the Light Blues to make.

Bisgrove could, therefore, secure his first masterclass since sporting director Ross Wilson moved on by convincing Knutsen to ditch his side's current title charge for a move to Ibrox to be a fantastic replacement for Beale.

Royals fall flat after Watson century

The Australia allrounder sizzled against his former team to score his fourth T20 century as Super Kings reigned supreme at their adopted home ground

The Report by Shashank Kishore20-Apr-20184:02

Tait: Rajasthan Royals looked flat and lacked inspiration

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsFor the 1000-odd Chennai Super Kings fans who endured the 26-hour train journey to Pune, this was a night to remember. For Rahul Tripathi, a Pune boy who plays his domestic cricket for Maharashtra at the MCA Stadium, this was a night to forget. He put down a regulation catch at slip to reprieve Shane Watson in the first over of the match and watched him smack the season’s second century, off 51 balls, against his former side, with whom he masterminded a fairytale a decade ago.Watson and Suresh Raina, who replaced M Vijay, joined forces in the fifth over. When they were separated courtesy an outstanding catch by K Gowtham at deep midwicket, they had put on 81 off just 44 deliveries, with CSK in line to score 240. Some fine end-overs bowling by legspinner Shreyas Gopal and Ben Laughlin restricted them to 204, but that was hardly any consolation for Rajasthan Royals, who never got going in the chase and were bowled out for 140 in 18.3 overs.Watson turns it onThey said he was a spent force. His previous season with Royal Challengers Bangalore was a disaster by any stretch of imagination, just like it was for Thursday’s centurion Chris Gayle. While Gayle came into the tournament in patchy form, Watson was the fifth-highest run-getter (319 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 135.16) in the PSL season that finished late last month.Watson announced himself inside the first six overs. This made the generally effervescent Raina look subdued in comparison. But that was only until he launched Ben Stokes for four successive fours in the sixth over to move CSK to 69 for 1, their highest Powerplay score this season. That was the start of a giant yellow party that continued until the end of the match. In two of the first three matches, Watson had got off to starts but fell trying to muscle the ball. Here, there was a calculated effort to bide his time, but that wasn’t at the cost of scoring quickly. It also helped that the Royals bowlers, particularly K Gowtham and Stuart Binny, kept feeding him long-hops.Gowtham went for 31 off the 13 balls he bowled to Watson, including three sixes and one four while half of Binny’s ten balls to Watson disappeared to the boundary. Watson profited from the pull, with his leg-side strokes fetching him 63 runs in all. He ended up with a control percentage of 84, noteworthy in a T20 innings of this length, and reflecting the ease with which he picked apart Royals’ bowling.Watson reached his half-century with a slog sweep for six off his 28th ball. The next 50 took just 23 balls, the landmark coming in the 18th over with a single completed to the backdrop of wild cheers and manic whistles and celebrated with a subdued lift of the arms. He was dismissed off the penultimate ball of the innings for 106 off 57 balls, with nine fours and six sixes. He slowed down towards the end, making only 15 off the last 12 balls he faced, but it didn’t cost his team much.Shreyas Gopal holds his own amid the carnageIn an innings where CSK were motoring along at close to 11 an over for a better part of their first 15 overs, legspinner Shreyas Gopal maintained a tight leash and conceded just two fours in his four overs, ending up with figures of 3 for 20. The reward for his persistence were the wickets of Raina and MS Dhoni in successive overs. Then he returned for his final over, the 16th of the innings, to dismiss the in-form Sam Billings. These strikes somewhat softened Watson’s stinging blows at the other end, with Royals managing to put some sort of lid on the scoring in the last seven overs, which only went for 54. Gopal’s wickets this season also include Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.A forgettable initiationTripathi strikes at over 10 an over in the Powerplay, but Royals have pushed him into the middle order to accommodate D’Arcy Short. On Friday, Royals left out Short but did not open with Tripathi, instead sending out Heinrich Klaasen.Klaasen was dropped by Watson at slip off the second ball of the innings, but he couldn’t capitalise. Indecisive footwork cost him big as Shardul Thakur’s length ball skidded through to beat his feeble push and crash into middle stump. Off the next over, Royals’ best batsman this season, Sanju Samson, fell to the pull shot for 2. When Ajinkya Rahane was bowled after charging down the pitch and missing Deepak Chahar’s knuckle ball, Royals were 33 for 3 in the fifth over.Royals’ ‘quantum of defeat’As steep their task was from there on, Royals had some hope with Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes in the middle. Both had trouble revving up the scoring rate. This forced shots out of desperation. While a few came off, like a Buttler six off Imran Tahir that sailed over long-on, CSK were always in with a chance of breaking the partnership. When Dwayne Bravo’s slower delivery felled Buttler, who sliced a catch to point, the chase was well and truly over. Then, Tripathi came out slogging, and holed out to deep midwicket. Out came the Bravo jig as whatever else Royals did from there on only served to “reduce the quantum of defeat”, as MS Dhoni put it the other night. Stokes top-scored with 45, taking 37 balls to make his runs.

Rangers: Beale struck gold on £2.5m gem whose value is tumbling

Glasgow Rangers went through a summer of transition under Michael Beale as there were plenty of incomings and outgoings throughout the off-season.

In truth, this overhaul was needed a season or two ago, yet the board failed to back Steven Gerrard adequately enough, and it led to Celtic reasserting their dominance of the Scottish game, ensuring Beale now faces a massive challenge this term in order to claim some domestic silverware.

The 43-year-old signed nine players during the transfer window, with the likes of Jack Butland, Jose Cifuentes and Danilo among the high-profile arrivals.

Butland – who has been described as an upgrade on Allan McGregor by pundit Kris Boyd – is really the only one who has settled well into life at Ibrox, and it may take some of the others some time to gel and forge connections with their new teammates.

As well as reinvigorating the team with some fresh faces, Beale also shipped quite a few first-team stars out of Ibrox. Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos left for nothing as they chose to run their contracts down, while Glen Kamara and Fashion Sakala were moved on for £5m and £4m, respectively.

One of the best pieces of business the former QPR boss did was to sell Antonio Colak, however, despite the striker playing only one season at the Gers.

How much did Rangers sign Antonio Colak for?

After leading the club to their first Scottish Cup since 2009 and coming so close to Europa League glory, Giovanni van Bronckhorst spent the summer of 2022 strengthening his squad ahead of the next season.

Former Rangers striker Antonio Colak.

Colak was signed from Greek side PAOK and Rangers knew all about his qualities as he had scored a double for Malmo when they knocked the Light Blues out of the Champions League at the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign.

A fee of £1.8m was enough to secure his signature and Van Bronckhorst heaped praise on him, saying: "He is a very experienced player who has played at high levels and scored a lot of goals for the teams he has played for.

"We wanted to add some more players to our attacking options, and Colak is a player we welcome a lot and will give us a lot of strength up front."

Sporting director Ross Wilson was another who lauded Colak. He said: "Welcome to Antonio, we are delighted to have him join our squad. I know how much Gio and the staff are looking forward to working with him on the pitch.”

Everything looked positive that the Croatian would be a success at the club, and it didn’t take him long to hit the ground running.

What happened to Antonio Colak?

Colak came to life for the club during the qualifiers for the Champions League, scoring three goals in four matches, including the winner against PSV Eindhoven that secured group-stage football.

The striker continued his excellent form up until the hiatus for the 2022 World Cup as he ended up scoring 14 goals under Van Bronckhorst, and it was beginning to look like £1.8m was going to be a bargain.

His form tailed off when Beale was appointed manager in November last year, however, with injury issues resulting in him starting just five times under the current boss, and it looked as though he didn’t quite fit his tactical system.

Colak was praised by Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie however, who said: “Colak's had a really good game to this point.

“It's his shot that creates the first and his pass the second but more his link-up that's caught the eye. Has dropped in consistently to create overloads and looked sharp.”

He finished the 2022/23 season as the club's joint top scorer with 18 goals, alongside James Tavernier, but it looked as though he was set to leave the club during the summer.

Where is Antonio Colak now?

Italian side Parma came in with a £2.5m bid during the transfer window and having already signed a few new forwards, the Light Blues accepted the bid, and it was a decent profit on the fee they spent on him just a year previously.

Beale only had good words to say about the 6 foot 2 hitman, saying: "Antonio can be really proud of his time here at Rangers. He scored goals and made a good contribution on the pitch but also as a man and professional, he was someone that I enjoyed working with and who built strong relationships with his team mates and staff off the pitch.

“We initially had a conversation at the end of last season, where we discussed football, his family and also what the future would look like in terms of the team. Antonio was very honest on his side and we have been working with him and his agent in the following weeks to find a solution that suits all parties. I am pleased for him to have this excellent opportunity in Italy.”

Glasgow Rangers striker Antonio Colak.

Although Colak has scored twice in his opening four matches for the Serie B side, it is evident that the Gers have struck gold by selling him on for £2.5m.

According to Football Transfers, Colak is now valued at €2.4m (£2m) and this represents a decline from the fee they spent on him just a couple of months ago.

Although he will continue to score goals in the second tier for Parma, the striker is on the wrong side of 30 and unless something dramatic happens, his value will only continue to drop in the coming months.

He only spent one season at Rangers, but with 18 goals in that timeframe, it represented a solid return for a player who was perhaps slightly one-dimensional and struggled to really get into games.

Beale has spent money on Cyriel Dessers, Danilo, and Sam Lammers this summer in a bid to improve his attacking options, but they have a long way to go in order to catch reach the 18 goals that Colak netted last term.

It is still early days, but none of the three have really caught the eye, and it will be up to Beale to try and get a tune out of them.

Gurbani, Fazal put Vidarbha in command

Rajneesh Gurbani’s 5 for 38 gave Vidarbha a 70-run first-innings lead, and Faiz Fazal built on it with an unbeaten 51 against Kerala in Surat

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Dec-2017
ScorecardPTI Medium-pacer Rajneesh Gurbani’s second five-wicket haul in two matches bowled out Kerala for 176 and handed Vidarbha a 70-run first-innings lead. Captain Faiz Fazal then made an unbeaten 51 – his fifth fifty-plus score of the season – to extend the lead to 147 at stumps on the third day in Surat. In reply to Vidarbha’s first-innings 246, Kerala kept losing wickets as allrounder Jalaj Saxena top-scored with 40. Resuming on 32 for 2, Jalaj and Rohan Prem stretched their overnight stand to 47 before legspinner Karn Sharma dismissed Prem for 29 in the 20th over. Jalaj and Sanju Samson then put on 44 for the fourth wicket to push the score beyond 100. Samson’s wicket, however, triggered a collapse as Kerala went from 115 for 3 to 176 all out. Gurbani cut through the middle and lower order to finish with 5 for 38 in 14 overs.Vidarbha began their second innings on a positive note with Fazal and Sanjay Ramaswamy adding a 53-run opening stand.
