Man City have struck gold on a "magician" who's worth way more than Palmer

One of the best academy systems in recent years has been that of Manchester City. The Cityzens have become masters at producing and selling some of the best young talents in Premier League football. The likes of Romeo Lavia and Oscar Bobb are two of the best recent examples to come out of the academy at the Etihad Stadium.

There is no doubt that the eight-time Premier League champions have had one of the best and most productive conveyor belts in the past decade or so. Over the past 12 months or so, there has been one City graduate who has particularly been making waves. That man, of course, is Cole Palmer.

Cole Palmer’s value in 2024

It has been a simply astronomical rise to the top for Palmer. Since his £42.5m move from the Citzyens to Chelsea last summer, he has quickly become one of the Premier League’s best players.

In 48 games for the Blues, he has scored 26 goals and grabbed 18 assists. His performances in the 2023/24 campaign, a season in which he scored 22 times and registered 11 assists in 33 Premier League games, won him the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Already, the England international, who scored in the Euro 2024 final against Spain, has started the season in the same vein of form he ended the previous campaign. Palmer’s second game away to Wolverhampton Wanderers yielded him one goal, an audacious lob from outside the penalty area, and a superb three assists.

The rise of the 22-year-old is quite remarkable given the fact he never really got an opportunity to show what he can do at the Etihad Stadium. He played 41 times in Sky Blue, making his debut in 2020/21, and scored six goals and registered two assists in that time.

Manchester City's Cole Palmer celebrates scoring their first goal

What is perhaps the most incredible thing about Palmer is how much he is now worth. According to Transfermarkt, the youngster is valued at £67.2m, around £25m more than the Blues paid to City to sign him. However, there is another City academy graduate, who is arguably even better than Palmer and valued higher than Chelsea’s number 20.

Phil Foden’s value in 2024

The player in question here is Phil Foden. Like Palmer, he has had an extraordinary rise to the top and was named as the PFA Player of the Year following his performances last season.

Manchester City star Phil Foden

Foden, who football statistician Statman Dave described as a “magician”, played 53 games in all competitions for the Cityzens, as they won the Premier League for the fourth consecutive time, scoring 27 goals and grabbing 12 assists.

His top flight exploits last season were the best of his career so far. In 35 games for the eight-time Premier League champions last campaign, he scored 19 goals and grabbed eight assists. He has continued to improve his goal involvement return year after year.

It is not only the goals and assists that have set him well on his way to becoming a City legend. Foden’s trophy cabinet is extraordinary, especially for one just 24 years of age. He has won 17 trophies so far in Sky Blue, which, amongst other titles, includes six Premier Leagues and a Champions League, which was part of the historical treble in 2022/23.

All of these remarkable achievements for Foden have led his transfer value according to Transfermarkt to skyrocket over the last few years. Nowadays, it is higher than ever, and he is worth an extraordinary £126.2m – far high then even Palmer’s worth.

Manchester City forward Phil Foden.

There is no doubt that City’s academy has been dominating the production line of Premier League talent over the past few years, producing the likes of Palmer. However, they really struck gold on Foden, who has won countless trophies for the club already, and could become one of City’s all-time greats.

Man Utd agree deal for ideal Wan-Bissaka upgrade in "terrific" £20m ace

It's been a busy summer for Manchester United so far, with two big signings, Joshua Zirkzee and Leny Yoro, already through the door.

It feels like this could be the beginning of an exciting chapter for the Red Devils and another opportunity for Erik ten Hag to show the rest of the Premier League what he can really do.

That said, given the nature of their season last year, there is still plenty of work to be done and stars to sign in the coming weeks.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

One player who looks set to be replaced is right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with recent reports already naming his successor.

Manchester United transfer news

According to a recent report from transfers expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have now reached an agreement on personal terms with Bayern Munich full-back Noussair Mazraoui.

Bayern Munich defenderNoussair Mazraoui.

The good news keeps coming for United fans though, as Romano also revealed that the club has agreed to the transfer with the German side and that the player wants the move, although he'll have to wait for Wan-Bissaka's departure.

The Italian does not mention how much this deal may cost United, but a report from the Guardian on Sunday night claimed the agreed fee is thought to be between £15m and £20m.

Bayern Munich defender Noussair Mazraoui.

It's not necessarily a cheap transfer, but by all accounts, it looks like good business from the Red Devils, as Mazraoui is undoubtedly an upgrade on Wan-Bissaka.

How Mazraoui compares to Wan-Bissaka

So, if the intention of United is to sign Mazraoui as a replacement for Wan-Bissaka – which seems to be the case – how does he stack up to the former Palace ace?

Bayern Munich's Noussair Mazraoui

Well, the first thing to look at is their output, as even though they're defenders, full-backs must contribute going forward in the modern game, and in this area, it's a comfortable victory for the Moroccan international.

For example, in 29 appearances last season, totalling 1982 minutes, he provided four assists, equating to a goal involvement every 7.25 games or every 495.5 minutes.

In contrast, the Croydon-born full-back provided three assists in 30 appearances, totalling 2411 minutes, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every ten games or every 803.6 minutes.

What about their underlying numbers, then? When we look under the hood, is it another clear victory for the "terrific" Bayern ace, as dubbed by former manager Julian Nagelsmann?

Unsurprisingly, given the Red Devils' interest, it is indeed, as the 26-year-old emerges victorious in the majority of relevant metrics, including non-penalty expected goals plus assists, progressive passes and carries, shots and shots on target, passing accuracy, passes and crosses into the box, key passes, shot and goal-creating actions, tackles won, successful take-ons and aerial duels, all per 90.

Now, the United ace does come out ahead for blocks and interceptions, but it's not by an unreasonable amount, and considering how he compares in practically every other metric, it's very much a consolation.

Ultimately, while Wan-Bissaka has been a useful player for the Red Devils over the years and is certainly good enough to play in the Premier League, Mazraoui looks to be the far superior modern-day full-back, and the fact that he's agreed to join the club should excite the fans.

Eoin Morgan: 'I can still contribute to a World Cup win'

Eoin Morgan will rest himself for some of England’s limited-overs international fixtures this summer amid concerns over his fitness, but has insisted that he still feels as though he can “contribute to a World Cup win” in Australia this winter.Morgan injured his right quad in January after playing back-to-back games in Barbados during England’s T20I series against West Indies and suffered a “mild groin strain” playing for Middlesex in the Blast despite managing his workload by missing games, but hopes to play all three ODIs against Netherlands in Amstelveen this week. His position as limited-overs captain has come under scrutiny – he has made a single half-century in international cricket over the last 18 months, and none in domestic T20 cricket – but he intends to stay on at least until the T20 World Cup in October-November.Asked if he would continue into England’s defence of their 50-over crown in India next winter, Morgan said: “That’s a long way away. I need to get to the T20 one first. I’m going to take it as it comes, managing my contribution, my body.”Am I still contributing on and off the field, within the team? I will be as honest as I [have been] with everybody since I started the captaincy. At the moment, I still feel like I contribute and still feel like I can contribute to a World Cup win. That’s an important drive for me.”Matthew Mott, England’s new white-ball coach, threw his support behind Morgan in his first press conference in the role on Wednesday. “He always says he wants to be picked as a batter in that team on form and merit all the way through and when he feels that’s not the case then he would step aside,” Mott said. “I think that’s a long way off being at that point.”Great players go through runs at different times and sometimes you flick a switch and it turns and you wonder what all the fuss has been about. You can tell when he speaks, everybody is listening. That leadership is something that’s probably not as recognised as much from the outside as it is inside. He’s got a lot of great cricket ahead of him.”Morgan said he was “reluctant” to “100% commit” to playing all three ODIs but intends to do so. However, he is likely to miss at least two of England’s six T20Is this summer, with England due to play on successive days during both the India and South Africa series.”It’s unlikely I will be playing every game this summer,” he said, “but that’s purely dependent on how I get from here to that match. If I’m flying and everything is going well, absolutely, but if not, there is no need to try and replicate that for a World Cup because it just doesn’t happen [in ICC events].”In terms of the focus on his position, Morgan said that it was “part and parcel” of the role. “It happens all the time as a player, never mind as a captain,” he said. “I genuinely have the best interests of the team at heart. It’s always been that way: I have trusted that method since I took over. To be in the position I am in at the moment is a privilege.”England have not played an ODI series since their second-string side whitewashed Pakistan in July 2021 after a Covid outbreak and have only played one white-ball series – the 3-2 defeat to West Indies in January – since last year’s T20 World Cup. As a result, Morgan said that he sees this series as the start of their run-in ahead of this year’s tournament, which he expects to “fly around”.Related

“It revolves around trying to get the right players in the right roles given the squad we’ve brought,” he said. “July’s a huge month for us in preparation for the [T20] World Cup, playing against two very strong sides [India and South Africa] over the course of a month which will test us.”That’s where we want to be in order to try and prepare ourselves best for that World Cup. Then there’s the Hundred obviously, but then we have no more international cricket before we go to Pakistan and then we have three games [in Australia] before the World Cup.”Jos Buttler is likely to shuffle up the order to No. 4, having mainly batted at No. 6 in the build-up to the 2019 World Cup and in the tournament, while Phil Salt is expected to open with Jason Roy and Dawid Malan will be given a chance at No. 3. England’s bowling cartel features five left-arm seamers – though Sam Curran is unlikely to bowl a full 10 overs as the ECB manage his comeback from a back stress fracture.”The fact they are left-armers gives them a different angle, a different strategy,” Morgan said. “Certainly in my experience, left-armers are open to doing more and doing different things, which is great. But the guys who are selected are purely here on merit. Ideally in our best squad, you would like a point of difference: if that’s left-arm or if it’s a guy who bowls 90mph [145kph] plus, then that’s great.”

£150,000-per-week forward now holds talks to join Ange at Tottenham

A "huge" forward has now held talks over joining Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham via his representatives, as Spurs remain in the market for more attacking signings.

Spurs targeting new winger after Timo Werner

Despite sealing a season-long extension on Timo Werner's loan deal at the club, and one which includes a new buy-option set at around £8.5 million, it remains the case that technical director Johan Lange and the wider recruitment team are scouring for new forward additions.

Tottenham consider Palace hijack with approach made for £11 million forward

The Lilywhites could spoil Oliver Glasner’s bid.

ByEmilio Galantini Jul 16, 2024

This week alone, Spurs have been tipped with interest in re-signing Marcus Edwards and could rival Crystal Palace in the race for his signature. Meanwhile, more established Premier League stars like Wolves winger Federico Chiesa and Palace star Eberechi Eze remain heavily linked.

Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano backs that the Lilywhites want one more star option in this position, and says internal talks have been ongoing over how much they're willing to invest in a new wide-attacker.

"There is appreciation from Spurs for Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace," said Romano on Playback recently (via GiveMeSport).

"And also with all of the other options we always mention here like Pedro Neto, this is absolutely confirmed. So Tottenham like Eze and like Pedro Neto, and they have decided how much they want to spend in that position. So there is internal conversation, but they will bring in one more player in that position for sure – one more offensive player."

Both Neto and Eze are likely to cost premium fees, though, so perhaps Levy will also want to look abroad for options. Juventus and Italy star Federico Chiesa could be a wonderful alternative, considering he could cost just £25 million this summer.

Chiesa holds talks to join Tottenham via his representatives

According to HITC, Chiesa has held talks to join Tottenham via his representatives, with the £150,000-per-week forward also open to an English move. The left-winger, who can also play as a second striker, scored 10 goals and assisted three others in all competitions for Juve last season. Chiesa also boasts over half a century of caps at international level and has attracted praise for his showings in recent years.

"He’s a huge player and he’s been linked with a few clubs in England. I’m sure they’re thinking ‘why didn’t we get him?", said pundit Rio Ferdinand in 2021.

"He’s just a fantastic footballer. The intensity with which he plays with, we saw in the Euros [2020] he was the main goal threat for the Italians who went on to win the tournament.

"It’s his pace, his drive. He’s the one who is the threat, he’s potent, he wants to run in behind. He’s that modern day striker who can play anywhere across the front line and he’s as comfortable out wide as he is through the middle. He unnerves defenders with that pace, he’s so direct."

Meanwhile, fellow pundit and ex-England international Joe Cole joined in on the praise, likening Chiesa to Luis Suarez.

"The biggest attribute he’s got is he plays with a humility," said Cole.

"He’s hustling and bustling like a young Luis Suarez character, he can make something out of nothing. Every club in Europe will want a slice of him when he become available."

Bye bye: £14,000-a-week Celtic defender drops pretty blatant exit hint

A £14,000-a-week Celtic defender has dropped a fairly blatant exit hint regarding his future, suggesting he has played his final game for the Hoops.

Celtic transfer news

Brendan Rodgers will be looking to strengthen his squad as much as possible in the summer transfer window, ensuring that his side once again go all the way in the Scottish Premiership next season, but also make more of an impression in the Champions League.

One player who has been linked with a move to Celtic before the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign is Stuart Armstrong, who has recently helped Southampton earn promotion from the Championship to the Premier League. Rodgers is believed to be a big admirer of the midfielder, who is out of contract with Saints at the end of this month, and has won 44 caps for Scotland.

The retirement of Joe Hart has heightened the need for a new goalkeeper to join the Hoops in the near future, and Sparta Prague stopper Peter Vindahl Jensen is one rumoured option there. Liverpool ace Caoimhin Kelleher is also a target, with a potential £10m move being plotted, as he looks to be a No.1 elsewhere.

A reunion for former Celtic hero Kieran Tierney is being weighed up, too, according to certain reports, with the left-back seemingly allowed to leave Arsenal after fallen out of favour, having spent the 2023/24 season on loan Real Sociedad.

£14,000-a-week Celtic player hints at exit

Speaking to Fotbollskanalen [via Sport Witness], Gustaf Lagerbielke has admitted that he is looking forward to a new challenge away from Celtic this summer, suggesting his time at Parkhead has come to an end:

"I know that there are a number of teams that are interested, but not much more than that. There are interested teams in Italy and also other leagues.

"Very instructive. I have developed a lot and become a better player. I have brought a lot with me. I’m looking forward to the future and I think I’ll take a lot from Celtic to the next team I join. It is difficult to say anything before something is ready. I have a contract with Celtic, but it’s no secret that I want to play."

Celtic defenderGustaf Lagerbielke.

In truth, this summer does feel like the right time for Celtic to offload Lagerbielke, even though his current contract doesn't actually expire until the summer of 2028.

Just four Scottish Premiership starts came the £14,000-a-week defender's way in the whole of 2023/24, and a total of only seven appearances in the competition, while a move to Italian side Lecce failed to come to fruition during the January transfer window.

Celtic could start the window perfectly with £4m+ swoop for star target

The Hoops are reportedly interested in a deal to sign the shot-stopper this summer.

By
Dan Emery

Jun 10, 2024

Lagerbielke's contract situation does mean that Celtic can at least demand good money for the 24-year-old, rather than losing him on a free transfer or on the cheap, so it must now be a case of getting as much money as possible for him.
