West Brom agree deal for Thomas-Asante

West Bromwich Albion have agreed a deal to sign Salford City striker Brandon Thomas-Asante, according to Sky Sports editor Lyall Thomas.

The Lowdown: Three-horse race

The 23-year-old has now entered the final year of his contract with Neil Wood’s side, making this the real final opportunity for him to make his big move.

The forward has been attracting plenty of interest from the Championship in the form of Birmingham City and Barnsley, but it appears that it’s the Baggies who have won the race for his signature.

The Latest: West Brom agree Thomas-Asante deal

Taking to Twitter, Thomas confirmed that West Brom have reached an agreement for Thomas-Asante and have beaten their fellow competitors to his services. He wrote:

“West Brom have agreed a deal in the region of £500k to sign Salford City’s Brandon Thomas-Asante, beating Birmingham and Barnsley to the striker.”

Sky Sports transfer centre later added that the player is ‘set to sign’ at the Hawthorns ‘pending a medical’.

The Verdict: Hidden gem

Whilst West Brom are renowned for signing experienced strikers, Steve Bruce will have no issue in making moves for players in lower divisions, and Thomas-Asante looks set to be an absolute bargain at just £500k.

The Milton-Keynes-born hotshot has scored 32 goals and provided 18 assists throughout his senior career, and has already netted four and assisted two in just six League Two matches at the Peninsula Stadium this season (Transfermarkt).

Thomas-Asante will need time to adapt to life in the second tier after making the jump up, but with guidance and exposure, he could prove to be the hidden prolific gem that the Midlands outfit have been searching for.

Celtic without star player vs Kilmarnock

Celtic will once again be without midfielder Reo Hatate for today’s trip to Kilmarnock, according to Sky Sports reporter Alison Conroy.

The Lowdown: Hatate absence

Hatate, who Gabby Agbonlahor labelled as ‘outstanding’ earlier this year, made his 22nd appearance in a Hoops shirt on the opening weekend.

Ange Postecoglou gave the Japan international the nod in midfield, however, he was withdrawn just after the hour mark and didn’t feature against Ross County the following weekend.

It was thought to be a knock for the 24-year-old, who was expected to be back in time to feature this weekend, however, that won’t be the case.

The Latest: Conroy’s post

Conroy took to Twitter on Friday to relay team news ahead of Celtic’s trip to Rugby Park.

The Sky Sports journalist said that Hatate won’t feature due to the artificial surface, while Stephen Welsh will be assessed.

The Verdict: Not ideal

It looks as if Celtic are playing it safe when it comes to Hatate, however, his absence isn’t ideal for Postecoglou. David Turnbull came in for Hatate last time out against Ross County alongside Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley.

The Hoops had to wait until the final few minutes, when Turnbull was replaced at 1-1, to score a second and third goal, so it’ll be interesting to see how Postecoglou approaches the game today without Hatate once again.

The likes of James McCarthy and Aaron Mooy are options for the Celtic boss should he wish to go back to a 4-2-3-1 system instead of a flat 4-3-3 attacking formation.

Romano reveals Everton interest in Gueye

Everton are in desperate need of improvements to their squad following a relegation scrap in the Premier League last season, and a new potential transfer target has now been named by a reliable source.

What’s the latest?

Italian journalist and Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the Toffees are interested in reuniting with Idrissa ‘Gana’ Gueye.

The transfer insider tweeted: “Everton have approached Paris Saint-Germain for Gana Gueye. He’s one of the names in the list but talks are still at early stages, discussions will continue in the next days. PSG want to sell Gueye as soon as possible.”

It’d be a massive coup

There is no doubt that the signing of Gueye would be a massive coup for Everton in their pursuit to add more quality to their team ahead of the new Premier League season, as the Senegal midfielder has gone from strength to strength since leaving Goodison Park in 2019.

Since joining Paris Saint-Germain, the 32-year-old has been a reliable player for the Ligue 1 champions, for whom he has made 111 appearances, scoring seven goals and delivering six assists.

Over 26 league appearances last season, he scored three goals, contributed one assist and created three big chances, making 2.3 tackles and winning four duels per game while successfully completing the majority of his dribbles (71%).

Gueye also ranked second for the most passes completed in the final third and ranked fifth for overall pass completion amongst his peers in the entirety of Ligue 1 last season, proving that he is a dominant presence in the centre of the pitch.

His performances did not go unnoticed by Mauricio Pochettino over the last campaign, with the ex-PSG boss hailing the Senegalese enforcer in a post-match interview after a victory over Clermont.

The Argentine said: “He [Gueye] is an important player in the balance he gives the team, he also scores goals now. Faced with stiff competition in the midfield, the Senegalese continues to score points at the start of the season.”

The talented midfielder has also enjoyed success with his national team and has racked up 94 caps for Senegal over his career, which finally paid off at the beginning of this year when he helped them to win their first African Cup of Nations crown.

The signing of Gueye would be a fantastic piece of business for Everton this summer, and if he can continue to thrive in the centre of the pitch following a return to Merseyside, it would put the club in a great position to improve in the season ahead.

Leeds: Juan Mata willing to take pay cut to move to Elland Road

Leeds United target Juan Mata is willing to lower his previous Manchester United wage in order to move to Yorkshire.

The Lowdown: Mata talks with Leeds

The Whites have been linked with a move for the 34-year-old in recent days, with the attacking midfielder now a free agent.

Reports have claimed that Victor Orta has contacted Mata’s father over a possible Elland Road deal, with negotiations slow but progressing ‘on track’.

Mata, who was described as a player with ‘class’ dress sense by former Old Trafford team-mate Scott McTominay, is also wanted by Real Betis, Marseille and an Italian club.

The Latest: Mata transfer update

Sport Witness relayed an update from Spanish outlet Marca regarding Mata.

They claimed that he is ‘studying’ the offers from both Leeds and Betis and ‘has made it clear to the clubs that have contacted him that he is willing to lower the amount he earned at Manchester United’ ahead of his next move.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-6/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Experienced option

Leeds’ oldest signing this summer has been 25-year-old Marc Roca, so a swoop for 34-year-old Mata would be a bit of a surprise.

However, the Whites have limited options in behind the striker at this moment in time, so the latter could be a useful signing and a Pablo Hernandez-like mentor, especially with teams able to make five substitutions per game in the Premier League from next season.

Mata has plenty of experience at the top level so he would be able to help a number of young attackers, and with the player willing to lower his previous £160,000-a-week salary, a one- or two-year deal could be a smart move from Leeds.

Arsenal interested in move for Grimaldo

Arsenal’s next transfer target could well be Benfica defender Alejandro Grimaldo, according to the latest reports.

What’s the word?

As per Portuguese outlet Record [via TEAMtalk], the Gunners have made contact over a potential move for the Spaniard, with the club seemingly targeting quality cover and competition for first-choice left-back Kieran Tierney.

The report claimed that the Premier League giants have enquired about a price for the 26-year-old but have yet to present an offer, with Benfica thought to be open to the player’s departure from Lisbon.

The 5 foot 7 menace – who joined the Portuguese club from Barcelona in January 2016 – could potentially be available for as little as €20m (£17m), with the chance that he could leave for nothing next summer with just one year remaining on his existing deal.

One of Edu’s best

This possible interest also comes amid doubts over the future of fellow full-back Nuno Tavares, with the 22-year-old – who only arrived at the Emirates Stadium in a £6.8m deal last summer – believed to be the subject of interest from Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.

With the Gunners said to be open to offers for the Lisbon-born starlet if they can secure a replacement, the man who could well come in to fill his place is his former Benfica team-mate Grimaldo, with the former Spain under-21 international seemingly a notable upgrade.

During his seven-year stint with the Primeira Liga giants, the £18m-rated defender has chipped in with an impressive tally of 19 goals and 50 assists in 247 games in all competitions, including 15 goal contributions from the most recent campaign.

That haul saw the £27k-per-week talent supply five goals and five assists in the league, while he also provided Champions League quarter-finals, eventually crashing out at the hands of Liverpool.

His impressive domestic form in particular saw the Valencia native record a strong 7.33 average match rating from SofaScore, a figure only bettered by three of his team-mates from last season.

Previously dubbed “one of the best left-backs in Europe” by Benfica sporting director Tiago Pinto, the La Masia academy product would seemingly be an astute capture for the north Londoners were he to be signed this summer, particularly given the recent injury history of the aforementioned Tierney.

The Scotland international was restricted to just 22 league appearances last term as a result of his frequent stints on the sidelines, with the 25-year-old sadly not a figure who can be relied upon to stay fit for an entire campaign.

In Grimaldo, Arsenal transfer chief Edu could well find the ideal candidate to fill the former Celtic man’s shoes when required and also provide direct competition for the Scot, with a strong understudy needed ahead of a season which will see the Gunners compete on four fronts.

Although it might not be a headline-grabbing addition, the defender’s potential arrival at the Emirates could prove to be one of Edu’s best pieces of business in his current role.

AND, in other news: Arsenal plotting move for £19.8m-rated “assist machine”, could be better than Raphinha

Everton could form dream duo with Pape Abou Cisse signing

Frank Lampard is a man with a big task on his hands at Everton, and with the club narrowly avoiding relegation from the Premier League following a vital 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace in their penultimate match last month, the supporters will be expecting much more next season.

The summer transfer window represents an opportunity for the Toffees manager to rebuild the squad, ship out underperforming deadwood and rejuvenate the players who will be staying for next season.

It has been a good start on that front, with the reported signing of defender James Tarkowski upon the expiry of his Burnley contract at the end of the month.

There could be another addition to the heart of defence, and Lampard could form a solid duo with a move for Olympiacos colossus Pape Abou Cisse, according to Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos.

Everton were linked with the centre-back in January but a move didn’t materilise, although their interest appears to have resurfaced.

Cisse is valued at £7.2m and, at 26 years of age, he is just about to hit his peak years. It’s no secret that the Toffees’ defence was dreadful last season, conceding 66 goals in the Premier League (fifth-worst in the division), and this is an area that Lampard is clearly aiming to improve.

The Senegal international would likely be a rock-solid signing. He ranked fourth in the Olympiacos squad with a WhoScored rating of 6.71, while also winning two aerial duels per match. Tarkowski won 4.4 headers per game last season at Burnley, and the two players combined would be excellent at winning battles in the air, which could come in very useful while defending set pieces.

This prospective pairing could be the answer to Lampard’s defensive woes from last season, and although adding some top-quality attacking talent is desirable, improving the defence must be the priority at Goodison Park.

The Everton faithful could be set for an exciting summer ahead if Cisse comes to Merseyside this time around.

Spurs: Romano drops Bastoni update

Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update on the future of reported Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Alessandro Bastoni.

What’s the talk?

In a recent video interview with Chris Cowlin, the Italian journalist revealed that, as of Monday, Fabio Paratici is yet to submit a formal offer to Inter Milan concerning a move for the centre-back, meaning that – despite a number of reports to the contrary – there are currently no ongoing negotiations between Tottenham and the Serie A side.

The transfer insider went on to reveal that Antonio Conte is a huge admirer of the 23-year-old, with the Italian believed to be extremely keen to bring his compatriot to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer, however, the journalist then reaffirmed that Spurs have not yet made an official move for the defender.

Concerning Spurs’ interest in Bastoni, Romano said: “For sure, Tottenham are exploring this possibility, Alessandro Bastoni is a player who Conte loves. So for sure, he is a player who is on Tottenham’s list and he would be a perfect signing for Tottenham. But as of now, what I’m told, Inter are still waiting to see if there will be an official proposal.

“So the two clubs, as of today, are not in negotiations. Inter are still waiting to see what will happen, what kind of proposal will be made for Bastoni. The expectation of Inter fans is that they hope that Alessandro will not leave, but I think it depends on the proposal. I think his agent was pretty clear a few days ago. They are waiting to see how much Tottenham want to spend on him.”

Supporters will be buzzing

While Romano’s claim that Paratici has not yet submitted an offer for Bastoni may come as a surprise to the Spurs faithful, the journalist’s further suggestion that as long as Tottenham meet the centre-back’s asking price a deal for the 23-year-old will be done is sure to have left supporters buzzing.

Considering just how impressive the £60m-rated defender was over the course of Conte’s two-year stint in the Nerazzurri dugout, the prospect of the youngster once again linking up with the 52-year-old at Spurs is certainly an incredibly exciting one.

Indeed, over his 33 Serie A appearances in 2020/21, Bastoni played a key role in Inter’s Scudetto-winning campaign, helping his side keep 14 clean sheets, registering three assists and creating three big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 61.5 passes, 1.2 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 2.2 clearances and winning 3.8 duels – at a success rate of 58% – per game.

These returns saw the £85k-per-week talent earn a quite remarkable seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.11, ranking him as Conte’s fifth-best performer in the top flight of Italian football.

As such, with the 23-year-old very much looking to be a perfect fit for Conte’s backline, Romano’s update suggesting that all Paratici has to do is meet Inter’s £54m asking price in order to get a deal over the line is undoubtedly fantastic news for everyone involved with the north London side – particularly the Italian head coach.

Liverpool: Nketiah can replace Origi

Liverpool should swoop for “clinical” Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah this summer. He would be available on a free transfer and would make the perfect replacement for Divock Origi.

According to a report from 90min earlier this month, Liverpool are monitoring the situation of Nketiah who hasn’t signed a new deal with Arsenal as he wants to explore all of his options ahead of next season.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

Their interest comes as Origi is set to leave Anfield when his contract expires in the summer, with it looking increasingly likely he will move to Serie A side AC Milan. Journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed last week that the player had informed Liverpool of his decision to leave and it was likely he would end up in Italy.

Nketiah would represent the perfect replacement for him, but The Reds aren’t the only team interested, with fellow Premier League club Chelsea also keeping a close eye on his future. The player could be tempted by a move to West London given he already plays for a club in the city.

However, Jurgen Klopp will be hoping that Nketiah can become his next Origi, and be a vital squad player for Liverpool who can step up when needed. If he moved to Merseyside he might not start a huge amount of games, but he would get to work with one of the world’s best coaches and likely win a lot of silverware in the process.

He’s rated at £9m, but the fact he would be available for nothing makes it even more appealing, and gives him a lot more options. The 22-year-old has featured 20 times for The Gunners this season the majority of which have come from the bench.

If you compare him to Origi over the course of the campaign it’s clear to see that he would be capable of taking his place. Nketiah has made double the number of goal creating actions than the Belgian this season, and has a higher percentage when it comes to successful dribbles at 38% compared to Origi’s 33%.

Liverpool seems to be the perfect place for young players to go, with Klopp being notorious for getting the most out of them.

Whilst Nketiah, who has 28 senior goals to his name, might not get as much game time if he moved, we think he would be better off for it, and could eventually become a regular when he’s had more time to develop.

'You can't play cricket bitter, you stop concentrating' – Glenn Maxwell

With the Ashes snub behind him, Maxwell wants to enjoy being part of the T20I outfit in the run up to next year’s World Cup

Daniel Brettig29-Oct-2019Glenn Maxwell was, though briefly, an occupant of the Australian dressing room during the Ashes. On day three of the pivotal Old Trafford bout, Maxwell and his Lancashire team-mate James Faulkner made their way into the rooms and on to the balcony to watch some of Australia’s first innings bowling at England, which helped set up the victory to retain the urn.How did Maxwell feel, sitting and watching the team he may well have been a part of if granted an opportunity during the 12 months Steven Smith and David Warner were banned? “Weird,” Maxwell told ESPNcricinfo. “I was at the Test. Myself and James Faulkner were sitting there watching the boys go about it, might’ve been day three, before we had a game on.”The boys finally looked up and waved to us up there. That was pretty weird, that was weird. We tried to give them as much support as we could while we were over there [in England], Jimmy and I were calling up the boys whenever they were around and trying to stay connected and making sure they knew they had our support as much as possible.”

I haven’t even sought out clarity or anything about Test stuff. I’m not overly too worried about it because I know I’m probably not next in line, so what’s the point in thinking about it right now?Maxwell isn’t thinking about Test selection

What’s striking about Maxwell is that, despite all the misadventures of the preceding year, he has tried very much to avoid looking upon his peripheral view of the Ashes as anything other than a great ringside seat to the action. Carrying any lingering resentment about opportunities missed or selectors not smiling on him at the times he preferred is not something Maxwell thinks will be helpful to his chances of succeeding in any format this summer. Going out there with something to prove does not work for him.”With whatever team they picked, we just had to give them as much support as possible. I didn’t want to feel salty or anything like that,” Maxwell said. “I just wanted to move on and concentrate on what I need to. You can’t play cricket bitter, it detracts from yourself and makes you stop concentrating on what you need to do. I couldn’t be happier with the guys they picked, they all played so hard and it was so good to watch, even on TV. I loved watching it and they did such a great job bringing home the Ashes.”Getty ImagesWhen the Australians celebrated wildly in Manchester at the end of the Test, Maxwell was having an early night to prepare to train for a Division Two county match beginning two days later, also at Old Trafford. Lancashire secured an innings victory comfortably enough, but Maxwell’s steep task ahead to return to Test calculations was underlined by how his innings was as brief as possible. He was bowled for a duck by Ravi Rampaul, and he averaged just 19.20 in four games for the county. A middling start to the Sheffield Shield for Victoria has left him well back in the queue.”I haven’t even sought out clarity or anything about Test stuff,” he said. “I’m not overly too worried about it because I know I’m probably not next in line, so what’s the point in thinking about it right now? I’ve got to be making big hundreds, big scores. And until I even start making some of them there’s no real point in me asking. If you average 30 for the season, there’s no point in asking ‘when am I going to play Test cricket for Australia’.”I know I’ve got to go out there and make a bunch of runs somewhere, so hopefully I get an opportunity after these T20s and the four-day stuff before the Big Bash and who knows. At the end of the season, I might be on top of the run-scoring list and then I might be able to have those conversations. But I know there’s still a fair bit of work to do for me to get back in that Test side. It’s not something I’m losing sleep over at the moment.”

I didn’t want to feel salty. I just wanted to move on and concentrate on what I need to. You can’t play cricket bitter, it detracts from yourself and makes you stop concentrating on what you need to do.Maxwell on the Ashes snub

Instead, Maxwell has T20 as his focus, namely Australia’s 12 months to prepare for hosting and ideally winning a first global tournament in the short format. Maxwell believes the past week has felt very much like the beginning of a fresh campaign, with much greater direction than ever before. He reckons that the corner was actually turned some time ago – a theory backed up by Australia’s’ improving results since the 2016 World Cup in India.”For the last 18 months to two years I feel like we’ve probably turned a corner and results have massively improved,” Maxwell said. “I think that’s reflected in the way we’ve actually started looking at T20 cricket. We’ve starting looking at ‘alright, let’s start, instead of picking our one-day side and turning it straight into our T20 side, let’s pick more specialists for this’, which is I think giving guys specialist roles as well, not just roll out the same batting line up or whatever.”Now we’ve actually got specialist roles for T20, which is nice, and I think with that change and mindset, results have changed a little bit for us. I think especially guys nutting out their roles and knowing where they fit into the side is a massive thing. Even simple things like fielding positions and where you run to in the field in between overs. When you get that right, it can all just look like clockwork and everyone knows what they’re doing.””All of a sudden, you’ve just got extra time up your sleeve, [captain Aaron] Finchy can relax a little bit at the back end, know guys are in the right spot and not have to stress about anything. The more you play with these guys and the more you’re moulding around each other, it can just become a little simpler for each other.”Getty ImagesAs a close friend of Finch for many years, Maxwell has watched his state and national team-mate wrestle with numerous battles up close – from his removal as T20I captain in 2016 to a run of poor batting returns early this year that brought calls for his replacement as ODI leader. “He probably had an interesting lead-in to the ODI World Cup where there was a lot of heat coming from back home,” Maxwell said. “He responded as only Finchy does, by peeling off hundreds, and smacking bowling attacks all over the place.”He came out and did really well for us in the World Cup and led really well. That helped him so much to be able to get through that, perform, well, come home, score 180 for Victoria in the Marsh Cup and he’s just getting better with age. He’s found I think the right level of peace and everything seems to be clicking at the right time for him now and hopefully that leads to more exciting results for him and Australia, because an up and about Aaron Finch going well is pretty scary for any opposition.”And as a far more central participant in Australia’s T20I side, Maxwell has a piece of advice for a team that includes no fewer than six squad members with either formal leadership roles in the team or a wealth of past captaincy experiences – let Finch run the team his way. “You’ve got to be careful I think, especially with this format, you don’t want to have too many voices coming at the captain,” he said. “Because there’s so little time as well, you don’t want three or four guys going to him at different times with different ideas. You’ve got to let him have his time to think, talk to the bowler and leave them to it. If he comes to you at a break or at a wicket, you answer him, give him honest whatever, let him deal with it, but only if he asks you.”You’re there to help him if he’s ever stuck, but you know he’s probably getting a couple of voices from somewhere else as well. I’m generally fielding on the fence for most of that, so you don’t really want to come out of nowhere when you know he’s probably had a couple of other guys already come to him. It’s about giving him that space.”

Why fining Tamim Iqbal will make little sense

While the BCB has done well to try and instil high levels of discipline in the team of late, penalising Tamim for his comments on condition of the playing field in a BPL game would amount to no more than censorship

Mohammad Isam02-Jan-2018The BCB’s hardline on disciplinary matters has the dual effect of pleasing many cricket fans but also making some players uncomfortable about expressing themselves.Cases in point: Sabbir Rahman’s punishment, and Tamim Iqbal’s proposed fine. There is hardly a fan in Bangladesh who feels that the sanctions imposed on Sabbir is anything other than what he deserves. But the proposal to penalise Tamim for his comments on the condition of the playing field in Mirpur during a BPL match is the BCB enforcing a severe form of censorship. After Comilla Victorians and Rangpur Riders struggled to get past 100 in their game on December 2, Tamim had heavily criticised the pitch and wondered whether the curator could have worked harder on it. He also made a passing mention of the outfield, but seemed mainly frustrated by how Mirpur couldn’t produce a better T20 pitch. He said: “It is a horrible, horrible, horrible wicket. We had ten days off, but the curator could not prepare a good wicket. The crowd does not come to see a 90-95 wicket.”Later, at the press conference, Tamim spoke in a similar tone, adding that the outfield didn’t look green enough. This, of course, is the same outfield that the ICC tagged “poor” after the Dhaka Test in August, resulting in the BCB incurring two demerit points. The Mirpur outfield and drainage system has long been lauded for its consistency, except this past year when massive redevelopment work – and delays in the same – have got in the way.On January 1, board president Nazmul Hassan said that Tamim’s comments on the outfield and curator Gamini Silva were what got him into trouble, not his criticism of the pitch. “Tamim, like anyone else, can talk about the pitch, but why did he speak about the outfield?” Hassan said. “What was wrong with the outfield? Why did he talk about the curator? We have already incurred two demerit points for the outfield after the Australia Test. There won’t be any matches in Dhaka if it reaches four demerit points. A captain can’t speak in this way, he has to be more responsible.”Hassan said that Tamim’s comments were “dangerous” to Bangladesh cricket, given two more demerit points could leave the BCB without Mirpur as an accredited venue. For his part, Hassan doesn’t flinch when it comes to telling the media regularly of the team’s plans for the 2019 World Cup, which players should be chosen in the squad, and how senior players like Tamim and Mushfiqur Rahim should behave. By the BCB’s high disciplinary standards, all of this doesn’t quite add up.But Hassan had an example to offer: “Players wore masks while playing in Delhi [in the India-Sri Lanka series last month]. But all the [Indian] players returned to the field as soon as their captain [Virat] Kohli made a gesture with his hand. None of them complained about the conditions that day.”So why would our well-known player, our vice-captain, talk about the outfield and pitch, that too in the media? Can he change anything saying these things? If he had told us, we could have helped him.”It is hard not to appreciate Hassan’s push towards a disciplined team after Mustafa Kamal, his predecessor in the BCB, proved to be a lenient leader. Hassan broke through in 2014 by suspending Shakib Al Hasan for six months on disciplinary grounds – though the penalty was later reduced. Hassan oversaw the BPL tribunal that ended up punishing Mohammad Ashraful, the former Bangladesh captain, for corruption in the T20 league. Pacer Al-Amin Hossain was sent back home from the 2015 World Cup after breaking the team curfew in Brisbane, while the BCB has also been severe on Sabbir in the past. But the BCB’s – proposed – stance on Tamim has the feel of some board directors taking his criticisms personally. If sanctions are brought against him, it could end up diluting the board’s steady progress in bringing discipline to Bangladesh cricket.
