'He'll be eager for revenge' – Juventus making the right choice hiring Luciano Spalletti as Gianluigi Buffon and Fabio Capello give ringing endorsements of 'great coach'

Juventus legends Gianluigi Buffon and Fabio Capello have been vocal in their endorsements of Luciano Spalletti to take over as head coach following the sacking of Igor Tudor. The ex-Italy and Napoli coach is reportedly in talks to with the Serie A side, who are in a desperate scramble to salvage their season amid the eight-game winless run that resulted in the Croatian's dismissal.

Juventus part ways with Tudor after winless streak

Juventus have not won a match since September 13, an enthralling encounter against rivals Inter in Serie A which finished 4-3 at the Allianz Stadium courtesy of a stoppage time winner from Vasilije Adzic. It was their third consecutive win in the league, a brilliant start to the season with the team showing collective spirit. However, things have unravelled rather dramatically for the Old Lady.

Juventus have since played eight games and have failed to register a win in each of those. In fact, in the previous four games, they haven't even managed to score a goal, with the 1-0 defeat to Lazio at the weekend forcing Juve to part ways with Tudor, just months after he had signed a contract extension until June 2027.

In search of a replacement, Spalletti quickly emerged as the favourite, with another former Italy coach, Roberto Mancini, also being considered by the Turin club, according to reports. With Spalletti seemingly the top choice, Capello and Buffon believe his arrival will provide a boost to the team.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportFormer Juventus boss Capello speaks on Tudor's successor

Speaking to , Capello didn't want to blame Tudor for Juve's struggles entirely, before giving his vote of confidence to Luciano Spalletti as the right man to become the next head coach.

"Tudor pays for everyone. Eight games without a win are too many for Juventus, but the responsibility isn't solely the manager's," said the legendary former coach. "The original sin was the club's half-hearted faith in Tudor. Last summer, several coaches were sought, only to then confirm Igor and extend his contract. The players sniff out these situations and exploit them. The real question, however, is: was Tudor the team built or someone else?"

On Spalletti, he added: "A coach of value and experience. He's already led big clubs and won. After the disappointment against Italy, he'll be eager for revenge. What better way to start again than with a renowned team like Juventus? Spalletti has the right charisma to lift the Bianconeri out of a difficult moment. Paradoxically, the most positive aspect is the league table: Juve are only six points behind leaders Napoli and Roma. [Raffaele] Palladino? He did well with Monza and Fiorentina, but Juventus are on a higher level."

Buffon backs Spalletti to end Juve's misery

Buffon, Juve's second-highest appearance maker after Alessandro Del Piero, also expressed his faith in Spalletti. "For me, Luciano is the right profile for any big club that wants to remain ambitious," the iconic goalkeeper said at a ceremony on Monday. "With him, you never lose too much. He's a football man, a great person, and a great coach. The best around in terms of experience, charisma, and authority. He's the right man for ambitious clubs that want to continue to be so. It's a shame to see him still without a bench."

The duo worked closely at the Italy national team, with Spalletti's stint as the Azzurri head coach briefly overlapping with Buffon's role as the head of national team delegation.

Getty ImagesJuventus to meet Spalletti on Tuesday

Juventus director Damien Comolli is reportedly set to meet the Scudetto-winning former Napoli manager Spalletti on Tuesday to discuss taking over from Tudor. According to multiple Italian outlets, including and , Spalletti is expected to be offered a deal until the end of the season, with an option to extend if Juventus secure Champions League qualification. Spalletti has already turned down offers from Saudi Arabia and Turkish clubs, though Mancini and Palladino remain backup options.

In the meantime, Massimiliano Brambilla, who was coaching the Juve Next Gen side, will take over the head coach role in the interim. He will be in charge for the game against Udinese on Wednesday.

Chelsea may sell Disasi to make room for "monstrous" £80m star who Maresca loves

Chelsea could sell Axel Disasi to make room in the squad for a “monstrous” new centre-back, who is highly-rated by manager Enzo Maresca.

Blues looking to sign new defender amid injury crisis

Injuries have plagued the Blues at the beginning of the Premier League season, and they are currently particularly light on options at centre-back, with Wesley Fofana and long-term absentee Levi Colwill still sidelined.

Against Liverpool, both Josh Acheampong and Benoit Badiashile were withdrawn due to injury, but Maresca’s side miraculously managed to come out on top in a 2-1 victory, with Estevao bagging a stoppage-time winner.

Disasi technically remains an option for the west Londoners too, but the 27-year-old is part of the ‘bomb squad’, and Maresca has previously made it clear he has no plans to reintroduce the Frenchman.

The Italian said: “Since the season started, I haven’t seen either of them. I haven’t seen Axel or Raheem. They train at a different time and on a different pitch. I haven’t seen them since the start of the season.”

As a result, it would make sense for Chelsea to cash in on the defender, and a report from Spain has now revealed they could sell Disasi to make room in the squad for Nottingham Forest defender Murillo, who is also being targeted by Bayern Munich.

The centre-back is highly-rated by Maresca, given his ability to play the ball out from the back, but a deal could be on the expensive side, with a price tag of £80m being touted back in the summer.

There is a belief the Brazilian would be the perfect fit in Maresca’s squad, and the Blues are confident they will be able to convince him to move to Stamford Bridge, despite the interest from elsewhere.

"Monstrous" Murillo could be ideal addition for Chelsea

Under BlueCo ownership, Chelsea have set out to sign young, high-potential players, and the 23-year-old certainly fits the bill in that regard, having already made a name for himself in the Premier League.

The Blues have set their sights on a new target, who is also of interest to the reigning Bundesliga champions.

ByDominic Lund Oct 12, 2025

Journalist Ryan Taylor has been left particularly impressed by the Forest star’s performances, lauding him as “monstrous” earlier this year, and the former Corinthians man has caught the eye across a number of key metrics over the past year.

The only real doubt over the signing of the Brazil international is the fact he isn’t accustomed to playing in a side where keeping possession is a priority, as evidenced by the fact he places in just the seventh percentile for his pass-completion rate over the past year, compared to other centre-backs.

That said, Murillo is still young, and clearly has the talent to succeed at Stamford Bridge, having already made 72 Premier League appearances at Forest, and a January approach would make perfect sense, amid Chelsea’s injury troubles.

Here's a look at the top 10 highest earners at Tottenham: 10 Richarlison £90,000 per week

Tottenham’s once club-record signing, Richarlison comes in with a fairly modest weekly wage – considering the £60m needed to sign him. However, he remains another player who has struggled to live up to the huge cost of bringing him to north London.

His current deal expires in 2027.

9 Brennan Johnson £100,000 per week

Brennan Johnson was the Europa League hero after his goal against Manchester United in the final, and his contract is worth £5.2m per season.

The Welshman’s deal expires in 2028.

8 Dejan Kulusevski £110,000 per week

Dejan Kulusevski’s stay in north London was made permanent following an 18-month loan deal from Juventus. His £110,000 per week wage, however, suggests he is a key member of the first-team squad.

His contract runs until 2028.

7 Joao Palhinha £135,000 per week

Joao Palhinha was one of many who made the move to Tottenham following the arrival of Thomas Frank.

The former Fulham midfielder returned to the Premier League with Spurs on a season-long loan from Bayern Munich, and there is the option to make a move permanent in 2026.

6 Dominic Solanke £140,000 per week

Spurs won the race to sign Dominic Solanke in 2024, with the striker signing from Bournemouth in a club record deal worth up to £65m.

Under contract until 2030, Solanke picks up £7.28m per season in north London.

5 Randal Kolo Muani £150,000 per week

Arriving in 2025 to provide competition to Solanke was Randal Kolo Muani. The Frenchman made the move to England on a season-long loan from Champions League winners PSG after impressing in a temporary move with Juventus.

Kolo Muani is in line to collect just under £8m in wages with Spurs.

4 Mohammed Kudus £150,000 per week

Also on £150,000 per week is Mohammed Kudus, however, the winger is a permanent Spurs player after his controvesial transfer from rivals.

Costing £55m, Kudus signed a six-year deal until 2031.

3 James Maddison £170,000 per week

James Maddison joined Spurs from Leicester City in 2023 and instantly became a top earner at the club.

Unfortunately for the Englishman, he has had his injury issues in north London, but still picks up just under £9m per season.

2 Cristian Romero £195,000 per week

Tottenham will feel they spent their money wisely when bringing in Cristian Romero, and after helping Spurs lift the Europa League, the Argentine signed a new improved deal.

He was being linked with a move to Real Madrid, however, Romero instead extended his stay in north London until 2029.

1 Xavi Simons £195,000 per week

As well as Romero, Xavi Simons also collects £195,000 per week following his big-money move from RB Leipzig.

The Dutch attacking midfielder cost more than £50m, with Tottenham hijacking Chelsea’s move for Simons after having their move for Eberechi Eze hijacked by Arsenal.

Amorim's a fan: £100m star overtakes Baleba as Man Utd's top midfield target

A “sensational” £100m midfielder has now emerged as Manchester United’s top midfield target ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba, with Ruben Amorim personally keen.

Man Utd keen on new midfielder amid Bruno concerns

Amorim has been forced to find a way to fit talisman Bruno Fernandes into his system, but there are concerns about whether the Portugal international is suited to playing in central midfield, with ex-Chelsea man Craig Burley criticising his positional awareness.

Burley said: “They have got no legs in midfield, we’ve talked about this with Casemiro and Ugarte. Bruno Fernandes is playing there, but it’s not his position.

“He doesn’t understand the defensive aspects and the positional aspects of being a deeper-lying midfielder. And it also negates, which we’ve talked about at length, his ability to influence 30 yards further up the field.”

Man Utd submit offer to sign two "special" English midfielders in double swoop

The Red Devils have tabled a proposal for two midfielders.

ByDominic Lund Oct 15, 2025

Perhaps with that in mind, the Red Devils have set out to bring in a new central midfielder, and summer target, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, has remained on the shortlist, with a report from early September revealing plans to smash their transfer record in 2026.

However, according to a report from The i Paper, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has now overtaken Baleba as Man United’s top target in midfield, with Amorim personally keen, as the manager is a fan of his directness and willingness to pass forward.

The Brighton midfielder, on the other hand, has made a disappointing start to the season, which has caused United to think twice about pursuing the Cameroonian, with one insider saying: “A calming influence, a midfielder on a different level with the ball at his feet wouldn’t go amiss right now,”

“Baleba can get about the pitch more, but does he possess Wharton’s quality on the ball? The club could do with the latter.”

"Sensational" Wharton would be very different option to Baleba

The Palace star, who reportedly has a price tag of £100m, is a very different type of player to Baleba, posing more of an attacking threat, while, as previously mentioned, expressing a willingness to drive the ball forward, which is why he has caught Amorim’s eye.

As shown, the Cameroon international excels more from a defensive point of view, which suggests he is more of a like-for-like replacement for Casemiro, although there have recently been widespread reports suggesting the ex-Real Madrid man could sign a new contract.

As such, Baleba may not be a necessary signing, and it is probably a wise idea to focus on signing Wharton, who has received very high praise from Sky Sports’ Nubaid Haroon in the past.

Mosquera says Arsenal have two "incredible" academy gems who "play like they’re 30"

Arsenal summer signing Cristhian Mosquera has piled praise on two Hale End academy gems he’s noticed since his arriving in North London, claiming they boast maturity far beyond their years.

Hale End prospering with conveyor belt of Arsenal sensations

Arsenal’s academy has long been a cornerstone of the club’s identity, and in recent years, it has blossomed into one of the Premier League’s most established talent factories.

Since the rise of England winger Bukayo Saka, whose breakthrough into the first team has been nothing short of spectacular, the academy’s reputation for developing technically gifted, versatile and exciting young players has only grown stronger.

Saka, who’s about to be rewarded with a brand-new contract which could make him the club’s only £300,000-per-week player, set a very high benchmark for Hale End graduates.

His success has inspired a new generation of starlets emerging from the club’s youth ranks, many of whom are now knocking on the door of the senior squad or making waves in loan spells elsewhere.

15-year-old Max Dowman is chief among them, having just become the second-youngest debutant in Premier League history behind fellow rising Arsenal star Ethan Nwaneri.

Dowman, after coming on against Leeds United, marked his first Arsenal league appearance by winning a penalty for Viktor Gyokeres to fire home in a 5-0 thrashing of the newly-promoted side.

Meanwhile, left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly, despite his ongoing battle with Riccardo Calafiori for a starting place this season, established himself as an England international during his breakthrough campaign last term.

The teenager started every Champions League knockout game for Arsenal in 24/25, including both of their semi-final legs against PSG, with Lewis-Skelly making 39 senior appearances in all competitions as a firm regular in Mikel Arteta’s starting eleven.

Sporting director Andrea Berta awarded both Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri with new long-term contracts in the summer to stave off interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs, and Mosquera has already been blown away by what he’s seen from the pair.

Cristhian Mosquera piles praise on Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri at Arsenal

Speaking to The Athletic, Berta’s recruit lavished praise on Lewis-Skelly and Nwaneri, saying the youngsters already “play like they’re 30” and it’s “incredible” to behold.

As Lewis-Skelly fights for his left-back spot, Nwaneri is yet to start a single Premier League game so far this season — but that is testament to the abundance of attacking quality in Arsenal’s squad.

Martin Odegaard’s new injury could free up space for the latter to accumulate more minutes, if Eberechi Eze doesn’t completely steal the number 10 role, but it is important to remember that Nwaneri is still very much in his infancy.

Interestingly, Arsenal chiefs hold very high hopes for Mosquera too, and there is a belief behind-the-scenes that their new defender could soon become one of the best centre-backs in world football.

‘Not just going to sort of sit here and take all the blame’ – Gio Reyna opens up on 2022 World Cup USMNT fallout with Gregg Berhalter and looks ahead to 2026

Gio Reyna has opened up about the controversy that marred his 2022 World Cup, reflecting on his fallout with then-U.S. manager Gregg Berhalter and the lessons learned from that turbulent period. The U.S. international admitted he would handle certain moments differently if given the chance but insisted he shouldn’t shoulder all the blame for what unfolded.

  • AFP

'That’s really what it stemmed from'

Reyna spoke in depth about the events that unfolded during the 2022 World Cup, acknowledging that frustration over his limited role under then-manager Gregg Berhalter ultimately sparked the tension between them.

“At the end of the day, I was just upset that, you know, I wasn’t really playing,” Reyna said to . “I was playing at Dortmund. I thought that I wanted to play at the World Cup, and ultimately, in the end, I didn’t do that, and that’s really what it stemmed from.”

“I guess the frustration and the disappointment was just wanting to play and help my country. It’s so far removed now and so far in the past, I don’t even really want to talk about it anymore.”

Reyna admitted he would approach things differently if given another chance, but maintained that the situation was not solely his or his family’s fault.

“Maybe in certain ways, but I’m not just going to sort of sit here and take all the blame for something that was made out to be completely my fault, which I believe it wasn’t, and also my family’s, too,” he said.

    Pochettino's message to Reyna

Now at Borussia Moenchengladbach, the 22-year-old is focused on rebuilding his form and proving to Mauricio Pochettino that he belongs in the 2026 World Cup squad.

“I do obviously think about [the World Cup] pretty often as it’s somewhere where I need and want to be,” Reyna said.  “But I try to focus daily here, stay present here, work here every day, and hopefully believe everything will fall into place.”

He also said Pochettino stressed the need to get consistent playing time in order to return to national team duty.

“I think Pochettino was very clear with saying, ‘You need to play, perform and then if you do that then you have a good chance to come in again,’” Reyna revealed. “It’s all on me now.”

Despite the move to Gladbach, Reyna has had similar struggles for playing time at the German club. Die Fohlen sit dead last in the Bundesliga, and the American has played just 122 in four matches so far.

  • Getty

    Dealing with injuries

Injuries have impacted Reyna throughout his career, and they've played a role in his limited action this season. The midfielder revealed he is trying to take a more proactive approach with his fitness. He described developing a more collaborative relationship with athletic coaches and implementing new strategies to handle the mental challenges that accompany repeated injuries.

“I’ve learned a lot about my body,” Reyna said. “The first 24 to 48 hours are always going to suck. There’s no way around that. What I’ve learned now is, after those one or two days where [there’s] obviously a lot of pain, a lot of downtime, down energy, you just have to get on with it. You have to kick on, you have to really just attack the rehab.”

Cummins backs Green as 'long-term' No. 3 amid Australia's batting reset

Roston Chase, meanwhile, was happy to say he hoped there were a few ‘scars’ left from the Gabba Test in early 2024

Andrew McGlashan24-Jun-20251:27

McGlashan: ‘No one is quite sure what to expect of the surface’

Pat Cummins has indicated that Cameron Green will be given an extended run to cement the No. 3 role in Test cricket as Australia look to bed down a batting order ahead of the Ashes later in the year.Green has been encouraged not to look too deeply at his lean returns on his comeback to the side in the World Test Championship final against South Africa, where he was dismissed twice by Kagiso Rabada across five balls for just four runs. He had come into that match on the back of three centuries for Gloucestershire. There was an opening for Green to drop back down to No. 4 for the first Test against West Indies in Barbados due to Steven Smith’s injury – the position where he made 174 not out against New Zealand last year – but Josh Inglis will take that role as part of a fresh-looking top four that includes the recalled Sam Konstas.Related

“I always like to not have too many moving parts,” Cummins said. “We see that [Green at No. 3] as a long-term option. I think going into last week he’s hitting the ball really well, he’s moving really well. He had a Test match where it obviously didn’t go to plan. Think he only faced three or four balls, so the message is not to look into that too much. We’re really happy with where his game’s placed and I dare say we’ll get a decent run of No. 3.”Barring injury, therefore, it leaves Marnus Labuschagne likely needing substantial runs at the start of the Sheffield Shield season to push for a recall to face England.”I think him at his best is a well and truly an international standard Test batter,” Cummins said. “If there’s an opening we could see him fighting his way back into the Test team at some point. Obviously the focus now is giving a couple of other guys a go. He’s had a pretty good run and obviously didn’t make the most of it as well as he would like, so [we are] offering that opportunity to the next couple of guys.”There remains hope that Smith will be available for the second Test in Grenada, which starts on July 3, as he continues his recovery from the compound dislocation of his right little finger he suffered at Lord’s. He is due to return from New York midway through the Barbados Test. “He’s got a few return-to-play kind of protocols he’s got to tick off,” Cummins said. “I know the medical team have got a bit of a program for him.”Pat Cummins and Roston Chase with the Frank Worrell Trophy•AFP/Getty Images

Only three of the top six played in the Gabba Test early last year which West Indies famously won (Usman Khawaja, Cameron Green and Travis Head), but Shamar Joseph’s name has never been far from the build-up to this Test. When new captain Roston Chase, who himself wasn’t part of that Test, was asked whether there would be any lingering memories of that day in the Australia line-up, he responded with a smile and a hint of a chuckle.”I hope there are some scars,” he said. “I mean, if they’re still thinking about that going out there tomorrow, that would be very good for us. I think that that would be part of the job done for us. So, yeah, I hope they’re still hurting.”Cummins, who had spoken before Chase, said, “A couple of the West Indian guys, particularly Shamar, had a day out. I’m sure the batters [have] been talking about how to manage him and counter that.”

In September 2011, the BCCI terminated the franchise for allegedly breaching its terms of agreement by failing to provide a bank guarantee by the stipulated deadline, following which both parties were involved in arbitration proceedings.Related

“The jurisdiction of this Court under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act is very limited,” Justice Riyaz I. Chagla said in his order rejecting the BCCI’s challenge of the arbitrator’s award. “BCCI’s endeavour to delve into the merits of the dispute is in teeth of the scope of the grounds contained in Section 34 of the Act. BCCI’s dissatisfaction as to the findings rendered in respect of the evidence and/or the merits cannot be a ground to assail the Award.”The conclusion of the learned Arbitrator namely that BCCI had wrongfully invoked the bank guarantee which amounted to a repudiatory breach of the KCPL-FA would call for no interference under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act considering that this is based on a correct appreciation of the evidence on record.”The BCCI has been granted six weeks to file an appeal.
