Paulo Gazzaniga: Spurs heading for unforgivable transfer blunder

Tottenham Hotspur could end the summer transfer window on a sour note if emerging reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to talkSPORT sources, both Liverpool and Everton are interested in a move for Spurs’ third-choice goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga on deadline day.

Jurgen Klopp could be without his first-choice Allison Becker for six weeks and after a humiliating drubbing by Aston Villa on Sunday evening, no one would blame the Reds boss for losing faith in back-up Adrian.

Whilst Carlo Ancelotti appears to be desperate to sign genuine competition for Jordan Pickford with Man Utd’s outcast glovesman Sergio Romero also a name mooted.

Could prove to be costly

Despite dropping down the pecking order following the arrival of Joe Hart in north London, the departure of Gazzaniga to one of Spurs’ rivals could prove to be a costly mistake.

Liverpool are the defending champions and are a shoo-in to finish inside the top four this season whilst the Toffees look every bit like genuine contenders for a place in Europe next season.

Therefore, strengthening either team could come back to hurt Spurs later in the season. They should know better after last season’s near-disaster as outside the top two, it was rather close.

Jose Mourinho’s side were three points from breaking fifth place whilst only five points split sixth to tenth.

And it’s not like Gazzaniga is a bad option to have at the club either having kept ten clean sheets in 37 appearances, per Transfermarkt.

The Special One has previously lauded the 28-year-old too, calling him “magic hands” after his display at Wolves in December whilst former boss Mauricio Pochettino, who brought him along from Southampton for just £2.5m, always believed that he had “the potential to be [a] top [goalkeeper].”

CIES Football Observatory value him as high as €7m (£6.4m), so is he really worth selling in the long-run? Probably not.

Levy simply can’t afford to risk this unforgivable blunder.

West Ham must avoid potential flop in veteran Fernando Llorente

West Ham United have been linked to a new striker this week and it’s a player that has haunted east London before…

What’s the word?

According to Italian transfer expert Ciro Venerato (via Arena Napoli), the Irons are one of the teams interested in veteran Napoli forward Fernando Llorente this summer.

It’s claimed that Carlo Ancelotti is also keen to bring him back to the Premier League having been the man to bring him to the Serie A outfit last summer.

The 6 foot 4 colossus is seemingly free to leave the Stadio San Paolo, although it remains to be seen how much he could cost with Transfermarkt valuing him at just under £3m.

Past it now

Llorente is a player that many at the London Stadium will know well as the Spaniard enjoyed three seasons in the Premier League from 2016 to 2019, playing for both Swansea City and Tottenham Hotspur.

During a League Cup tie with the Irons in 2018, the 35-year-old caused Manuel Pellegrini’s Hammers side all sorts of problems, scoring in a 3-1 victory.

David Moyes’ current defensive pairing Angelo Ogbonna and Issa Diop struggled to cope with his physical presence – Llorente won 60% of his duels whilst the Frenchman committed one foul and had to put in one last-ditch tackle, per SofaScore.

However, he could potentially be another expensive flop with him reportedly on over €60k-per-week (£54k-per-week) at Napoli.

In the past, Llorente has caused mixed reaction in the press – Frank Lampard once said in 2017 that there was a “sluggishness” about him and “sloppy” whilst Irons legend Trevor Sinclair believes his hold up play is “superb” and that he’s a “great plan B”.

It’s unlikely that a 35-year-old is going to come into United and outscore Sebastien Haller despite only scoring seven times last season, therefore, Moyes should steer well clear of this move.

Newcastle United: MP Ian Lavery makes takeover claim which could see fans involved

An MP has made a claim on the proposed takeover of Newcastle United which involves fans of the Tyneside club.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Wansbeck MP Ian Lavery said with regards to the prospective £300m deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabian (KSA) group:

“We could [alternatively] raise it with the DCMS Select Committee. So, this might just be the catalyst which means that football supporters nationwide might be invited in through the doors to be involved in the decision-making process.”

Indeed, if Lavery as well as the other 40 MPs who wrote to the Premier League last week do not get a reply from the top flight or its chief executive Richard Masters, then they could well go to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to raise the issue.

Lavery argues that fans from around the country may then get an invite to be involved in the decision-making process.

The Saudi-led consortium, consisting of the Middle Eastern crown prince Mohammed bin Salman (MbS), his country’s Public investment Fund (PIF), businesswoman/head of PCP Capital Partners Amada Staveley and the London-based billionaire Reuben brothers, officially withdrew their own bid after growing increasingly frustrated with just how long it was taking for the Premier League and its CEO to come up with their final decision.

However, if supporters were potentially to get involved in the process, then it may well be accelerated and perhaps make it easier for the Premier League to arrive at their final decision.

Nevertheless, the league will surely have to give more clarity as to how exactly their process works in order for this to happen, in addition to giving their full cooperation to the parties involved in the deal.

Glasgow Rangers: Fans react to huge Messi news

Unless you have been living under a rock, you will have heard that Lionel Messi – a player who was targetted by Glasgow Rangers all the way back in 2004 – has told Barcelona he wants to leave the Camp Nou.

In a truly monumental story, it looks as though the Argentina international could be leaving the one and only club he has ever played for as a professional. He has managed a huge 635 goals and 285 assists in 731 games, whilst he has four Champions League titles and a record six Ballon d’Ors – he is arguably the greatest player to ever walk the planet. Currently valued at £100.8m by Transfermarkt, it would be interesting to see who could afford him.

There was a time, though, when he could have been a Gers players – albeit on loan. In 2004, when Messi was still just a 17-year-old, the Ibrox outfit made an approach to Barca – but in the end, they ended up signing Alex Rae.

With this news emerging, the Glasgow Times have put together an amusing article discussing Messi’s former Gers link, and it has attracted plenty of attention from the supporters, leading to some amusing responses. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Celtic: Danny Mills believes Jordon Ibe has a lot to prove

Since it was announced that AFC Bournemouth winger Jordon Ibe would be leaving the club when his contract expires this summer, Celtic have been heavily linked, and Danny Mills believes he has a lot to prove, which could be ideal for the Hoops.

Ibe’s career has not exactly gone the way that many expected as he emerged into the Liverpool side, but was then sold to the Cherries for a reported £16.20m. He has struggled to live up to that price tag whilst at the club though and has only managed to score five goals in 92 appearances, per Transfermarkt. However Neil Lennon has been an admirer of the player and looked to sign him last summer, via the Express.

Speaking to Football Insider about the winger and his future, Mills said, “His career has gone backwards. A £16million move and he has had a handful of appearances. A lot of clubs were after him at the time.

“Why has a player of that quality and that value not been able to get into the Bournemouth side? You wonder if it is his attitude or perhaps he is just not good enough. He needs to sort himself out. He needs to be playing regular football as quick as possible. A player that is still young with a lot of quality but he has a point to prove.

“Young players often get too much too soon, think they have made it and they do not keeping pushing. They think they have hit the big time but very quickly it can be snatched away from you.”

It is very true what Mills says here, Ibe’s career in England has probably seen him go through a rollercoaster of emotions and at the age of 24, it feels like the next step in his career will define how he is remembered and he will also want to prove that he can do well on the big stage.

There is no better place to do that than Celtic, and Football Insider revealed in March that the winger would be willing to take a cut on his £40k-a-week wages to Neil Lennon’s men this summer.

At Celtic he will be given the chance to prove himself and be given more consistent appearances, as it looks like he could be the Hoops alternative option to last season’s loanee Mohammed Elyounoussi as it was recently reported they would not pay the price tag that Southampton want for him.

The Ibe transfer looks to please all parties, with Celtic being able to acquire him on a free whilst the Englishman gets another chance to be at a big club.

Would Ibe be a good alternative to Elyounoussi? Comment below!

Newcastle fans react to Richard Keys takeover comments

Newcastle United fans don’t particularly like former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys, and his latest comments have only riled them up even more.

Last month, the BeIN Sports anchor revealed that he wished it were a different Premier League outfit getting taken over by a wealthy Saudi Arabian consortium, which in itself caused anger.

And now Keys has claimed that he expects the takeover to get the ‘nod of approval’ this week before wishing the northeast side ‘good luck’.

He also joked that Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of the Public Investment Fund thought to be behind the deal bears a canny resemblance to himself.

Crazily, he’s not wrong.

It appears as if Newcastle’s takeover will edge closer this week with the Saudi-backed consortium, fronted by Amanda Staveley, agreeing to a deal worth approximately £300m, according to the BBC.

Keys’ comments were relayed by popular Twitter account @NUFC360 and the Magpies faithful have been reacting in their droves.

Many slammed him for being a “hypocrite” as well as being “bitter.”
