Leeds eyeing Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher

Leeds United have made their first move to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are one of the clubs monitoring the Blues ace ahead of a potential move, and that they had been tracking his progress closely during his loan spell at West Brom last season.

The Athletic have now claimed that the Whites have made an approach to sign the 21-year-old, with fellow Premier League outfit Crystal Palace also said to be vying for his signature.

The report adds that a new central midfielder is the club’s big priority at the moment, and that Chelsea would be willing to sanction another loan move away for Gallagher.

Perfect for Bielsa

If Bielsa can get a loan deal over the line for Gallagher, then they would be getting someone who is still very young at 21, but already has extensive experience playing in the Championship and Premier League.

Despite not making his mark on the first team at Chelsea, Gallagher has received plenty of plaudits during his loan spells, with former Charlton boss Lee Bowyer even calling the £13.5m-rated midfielder a “jewel” who was “impossible to replace.”

During the youngster’s time at Swansea, Sky Sports pundit Keith Andrews lauded the “unbelievable” energy Gallagher possesses, even comparing him to Chelsea icon Frank Lampard.

The former Blackburn midfielder said: “The one thing he has got is a fantastic engine, much like Lee Bowyer or Frank Lampard – it’s amazing, the resemblances between those two in their younger years particularly. But for me, he’s a classic No 8; he has an unbelievable energy, he does the ugly side of the game, but you have to let him off the leash and let him get forward.”

On Twitter, The Athletic’s West Brom correspondent Steve Madeley threw his backing behind a potential move to Leeds, saying that Gallagher’s “energy and commitment are perfect for Bielsa.”

That emphasis on the  21-year-old’s dynamism and work-rate is something which will be music to the ears of Bielsa, and a season-long loan move surely has nothing to lose for Leeds next season.

Meanwhile, Leeds could sign their new Pablo Hernandez in this star…

Wolves confirm Sa signing

Lots of Wolves fans have been left to gush as the Midlands club confirmed the signing of Jose Sa via their official Twitter page on Thursday evening.

The Molineux faithful released an announcement video to confirm the capture of the goalkeeper, who comes in as the replacement for Rui Patricio, who has left to join AS Roma.

As per their website, Sa has signed a deal worth five years at Molineux, and technical director Scott Sellars is very impressed by the signing.

He claims that the former Olympiacos ace is in his ‘peak years’ at 28 years of age, and notes that he is ‘aggressive’ when coming for crosses.

Sa also has ‘excellent distribution’ and is a ‘pro-active’ player, and should fit nicely into the style of play set to be implemented by new manager Bruno Lage.

Wolves fans on Sa update

Leeds United: Noel Whelan drops glowing Joe Gelhardt verdict

Noel Whelan has been thrilled by Leeds United youngster Joe Gelhardt’s application in pre-season training ahead of the upcoming season.

The Lowdown: Leeds United gear up for 2021/22

Looking ahead to 2021/22, many onlookers up and down the country will be eager to see whether Marcelo Bielsa’s men can improve on their impressive ninth-placed finish last term.

New acquisitions will be key to prospective improvement, with the Whites already busy in the transfer market following the signings of Amari Miller and Jack Harrison permanently. However, the young talent coming through Thorp Arch could also have a role to play for the Yorkshiremen.

The Latest: Whelan lavishes praise on ‘hungry’ Gelhardt

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, BBC pundit Whelan was particularly complimentary regarding Gelhardt. Talking up the 19-year-old’s chances of gaining first team recognition in the coming months, the former Leeds striker said:

“It’s dedication, that desire, that hunger when the season is finished.

“Give yourself a bit of downtime but not that much. You know straight away you want to hit the ground running when you come back.

“They’ll see that this kid is a hungry kid who really wants to start pushing. He’s definitely got the talent, there’s no doubt about that.

“You want to be ahead of the players that have been playing, you want to test your Bamford’s, your Rodrigo’s.

“Really, you want to be pushing them. They had a great under-23 season last year but that’s not where he wants to play this year.

“I think every under-23 that’s there would love to be part of the first-team squad.”

The Verdict: Gelhardt should be given more first team opportunities

Whelan rightly points out the need for Gelhardt to be given first team opportunities within a senior environment at Elland Road.

In 2020/21, he enjoyed a fantastic season in the Whites’ under-23 setup, producing 14 goal contributions from 16 Premier League 2 Division 2 outings with 11 goals and three assists [Transfermarkt]. He duly helped his side to gain promotion to the Premier League 2 Division 1, the highest level of developmental football in England [SB Nation].

Equally capable of operating behind the striker as a secondary forward or attacking midfielder, there is scope that Gelhardt can challenge for a debut in the first team during the next few months.

Leeds should use the forthcoming pre-season programme to afford the 19-year-old a platform to impress ahead of 2021/22.

'Now is the time for the players to deliver the goods' says Anderson ahead of C and G quarter final tie

Despite their disappointing one day form in other competitions this season, Somerset are expecting a big crowd for their Cheltenham and Gloucester quarter final match against Worcestershire at the County Ground on Wednesday

Richard Walsh15-Jul-2002Despite their disappointing one day form in other competitions this season, Somerset are expecting a big crowd for their Cheltenham and Gloucester quarter final match against Worcestershire at the County Ground on Wednesday.Tickets are still available, but judging by the large number of personal callers, and the volume of telephone calls that were being dealt with by the office staff early this morning the game looks like it could even be a sell out.Out on the pitch, fast bowlers Andrew Caddick and Richard Johnson were being put through their paces by Kevin Shine and his team, and it is expected that the pair will be back to spearhead the attack for the Cidermen against a Worcestershire team who are riding high at the moment.Chief executive Peter Anderson told me: "We are hoping for a full ground on Wednesday to support the team. We are the holders and even though we haven’t been performing well in one day matches, now is the time for the players to dig deep and deliver the goods."He continued: "Johnson and Caddick are having fitness tests today and tomorrow, and all the signs are looking good. Both want to play and the coaches are very optimistic, and of course we will have Jamie Cox back and Marcus Trescothick back so we should be at full strength. The match will not be on television, so if people want to see what promises to be a fascinating game they will have to come along to watch for themselves."

Everton interested in signing Glen Kamara

Everton’s midfield is currently stacked but that hasn’t stopped Marcel Brands and co from identifying that part of the pitch as somewhere they need to recruit.

The Toffees are close to signing Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon but he’s not the only central player on their shortlist.

What’s the word?

Rafa Benitez has only just walked through the door of Goodison Park but he looks set to be backed significantly by Farhad Moshiri and the Everton boardroom.

One player he could use their financial muscle to sign is Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

That’s according to GIVEMESPORT, who suggest that Everton are in a battle with West Ham United to sign the Finnish star.

Arsenal were revealed as potential suitors to re-sign the 25-year-old while Watford are also interested in luring Kamara back to England.

A big upgrade

Kamara has come a long way since being released by Arsenal back in 2017. He was an imperative part of the Rangers squad that won the Scottish Premiership last term and was one of Finland’s best players during the ongoing European Championships.

In fact, he rates as one of the best in the entire of Scotland according to former Gers player Charlie Miller.

In a recent interview, he commented: “Glen Kamara is the best midfielder in Scotland.

“He has the ability to go and play at a very high level. He is athletic, technically very good, is good in the tackle and is becoming a complete player.”

Miller concluded: “Put it this way, there are players going for £30-£40m in England who couldn’t lace Kamara’s boots.”

Judging by the 34-cap general’s form at Euro 2020, it’s clear to see why he’s rated so highly.

Kamara produced 1.3 tackles and a whopping 3.3 interceptions per game. That second tally was the highest of any Finland player at the tournament, showcasing his wonderful ability to read and break up the play.

He is also particularly comfortable and safe in possession of the ball. During the Euros, Kamara was successful with 87.9% of his passes, the second-highest number of Finnish players to start this summer.

Compared to those at Everton, he is streets ahead of Tom Davies, somebody he could replace in the squad after the academy graduate was linked with the exit door.

In 2020/21, Davies managed 1.2 tackles and just 1.4 interceptions per match. His pass success rate was only 81.2% as well.

Kamara’s former manager at Dundee United, Neil McCann, stated: “He isn’t a big, physical lad but he’s made of iron and really strong. I knew immediately that he could handle the ball under pressure and not give it away, so he was perfect. He’s a special talent. He’s lightning-quick but he doesn’t show it. He’s a player who takes instruction well.”

Judging by that, Kamara would add a great deal to the middle of Benitez’s side. He’d be foolish to ignore his qualities this summer, especially if Davies does head for the departure lounge.

AND in other news, Benitez can make an instant impact at Everton by signing “exceptional” 33-goal monster…

SPCL 1 – Havant overhaul BAT as latter falter

With two matches remaining, Havant have snatched a slender lead over BAT Sports at the top of the ECB Southern Electric Premier League

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)18-Aug-2002With two matches remaining, Havant have snatched a slender lead over BAT Sports at the top of the ECB Southern Electric Premier League. The situation at the top changed dramatically when BAT lost by 27 runs at Bashley-Rydal, and Havant held their nerve to pip South Wilts by a solitary run after a batting bonanza at Lower Bemerton.Champions BAT went into the 15th round of matches protecting an 11-point lead, but they played indifferently at Bashley and never really got any grip on the game.Havant, the inaugural 2000 season Premier winners, recovered from a worrying 79-5 to post 254-7 – but had to hang on as South Wilts, needing 14 off the final over, finished at 253-9.The results have set up a photo-finish to the title race.BAT entertain Andover on Saturday and visit neighbours Calmore Sports on August 31. Havant play relegation-bound Burridge and host Bournemouth.Bashley, who seem likely to pip Bournemouth to third place, took the initiative in the opening hour against BAT and never let go.Neil Taylor’s gamble to thrust Dale Middleton into a pinch-hitting opener’s role paid dividends as the one-time Hampshire Under-17 left-hand all-rounder punished the BAT bowling. He lost opening partner Neil Thurgood early on, but unruffled an off-colour BAT attack with a series of drives and pulls.Middleton’s best-yet 66, which contained two sixes and six 4s, got Bashley off to a dominant start, which Andy Sexton (33) and Luke Ronchi (34) did their bit towards improving. Two wickets in consecutive balls by Dan Goldstraw (3-35) checked Bashley’s onslaught, but with 172-6 on the board after 30 overs, the Foresters were always on target for a challenging total.BAT didn’t seem to get their main bowlers into the firing line as Shaun Lilley (22), aided by Neil Taylor and Kevin Nash at the end, powered Bashley to 242-8 off 50 overs.Bashley’s target always looked to be just beyond BAT’s reach – and so it proved.By the 30th over, they were four down for 92, and left needing 151 runs to win off the last 20.Losing four partners at regular intervals hardly helped Richard Kenway, who did his best to keep the scoring rate ticking along.Kenway (60) eventually skied a running catch to Sexton to leave BAT 129-5 in the 37th over. But Hampshire YCs prospect Ricky Rawlins, in his first real Premier League challenge, rose to the occasion, slapping a series of boundary shots as champions began to make a fight of it.Ricky and his father Terry added a useful 43 for the sixth wicket, but when Rawlins senior (35) – facing a daunting ask of ten runs an over – was run out at 190-7, BAT’s challenge effectively ended. They were eventually dismissed for 215 – and were back in the Bashley clubhouse to hear the drama unfold at Lower Bemerton, where South Wilts came so close against Havant. That the match produced such a dramatic finish was surprising in itself after Havant’s top order had been undone by Shaun Adam (3-56) and Adam Smith (3-39).They title challengers were rocking at 79-5 (Andy Perry 30) before Paul Gover and Shane Ferguson (42) launched a rescue act. They added 100 for the sixth wicket, Gover going on to battle his way through the remainder of the innings for a gutsy 91 not out.South Wilts can be a dangerous chasing side if their powerful top-order gets going – and once Paul Draper (56) and Russell Rowe (49) had produced a 96-run start, the challenge was on.Phil Loat (4-59) removed both openers before a stutter saw South Wilts slip to 160-4.Jamie Glasson (54) added useful runs with Danny Webb (22), but his departure at 218-6 was a telling point in the run chase.Adam (29) struck out, hitting Loat for a six over long-off to leave South Wilts requiring six runs to win off the last four balls. But when he holed out to Perry in the deep and Greg Sheppard was run out, South Wilts sank to 250-9.Smith needed a four off Loat’s final ball, but only managed a two as South Wilts finished one run behind at 253-9.

CFX Academy on top after day 2 in Mutare

CFX Academy go into the third day of this Logan Cup game at Mutare Sports Club with a lead of 305 runs, three batsmen still in hand, and are clear favourites to prevail with time to spare

Nigel Fleming17-Feb-2002CFX Academy go into the third day of this Logan Cup game at Mutare Sports Club with a lead of 305 runs, three batsmen still in hand, and are clear favourites to prevail with time to spare. In a day which saw the Mutare track flatten and batsmen prosper, the youngsters have created a near impregnable position from which Manicaland will do well to draw.Resuming his overnight score of 69, Manicaland captain Neil Ferreira pushed on to 106 (14 fours) in the best knock of the match so far. Granted another life by the Academy wicketkeeper off unlucky speedster Nicholle in the 80s, Ferreira accumulated runs calmly, showing his teammates what a four-day temperament can achieve. He left well, defended well and was happy to attack when opportunities arose. For the Academy, blond rugby-forward-proportioned Peter Rinke improved his control greatly from the previous day to capture four for 39 with his inswinging off-cutters. Bowling a similar line but with more zip the unlucky Nicholle – recently returned from Zimbabwe Under-19 tour of New Zealand – looked the best and most likely to progress to the next level. Chouhan picked up one for 24 with his leg-spinners and, whilst he varied his pace and was prepared to toss it up, the Manicaland batsmen were guilty of letting him settle. The Academy will encounter better batting line-ups than Manicaland and their failure to put them away will worry chief coach and team manager Dave Houghton. The second century of the day went to left-arm spinner Ian `Coolbox’ Coulson, who suffered violent treatment at the hands of Glen Barrett for a second day running. Smacking consecutive missiles over the clubhouse and scorebox and another right through the top right corner of the sight-screen, Barrett continued his dominance of Manicaland’s bowlers and ominously remained unbeaten on 74 (6 sixes, 4 fours in 52 balls) at stumps. An entertaining batsman who is much more than a slogger, it is however unlikely that his flamboyant technique would survive the more detailed examination of a Wasim Akram or Saqlain Mushtaq. The unlucky Coulson was left to contemplate a catch offered by Barratt in the 50s that resulted in a high-speed head-collision between Tino Mawoyo and Nyeem Sheth. As the two (and the cricket ball) lay motionless at backward square leg, visiting Hippo Valley MD (and square-leg umpire) Mark Deary was able to verify that everyone would live and the game resumed after a 10-minute time-out. Also amongst the runs was Chouhan with 72 (12 fours) who drove and pulled well but, as with his bowling, Manicaland allowed him too much free time to acclimatize.Manicaland face huge problems of survival on the third day, having under-performed for most of the match to date.

Aston Villa: Fans react to triple departure

Aston Villa announced on Friday afternoon that Ahmed Elmohamady, Tom Heaton and Neil Taylor have left the club.

As to be expected, the news regarding the trio has received plenty of interaction from a number of Villa supporters on social media.

All three players were out of contract this summer and will be free to find new clubs over the coming months.

Heaton, who has reportedly agreed to move to Manchester United, returned to the Villa bench last December after a serious injury and provided cover to Emiliano Martinez for the second half of the campaign, but he did not make any first team appearances in that time.

Elmohamady made 129 appearances for the club, with only 17 of those coming in the 2020/21 campaign. Fellow full-back Taylor, who has been at Villa Park since January 2017, turned out just once in recent months, bringing his Villa appearance tally to 103. Those two played regularly in the promotion-winning 2018/19 season as Dean Smith’s side secured their return to the Premier League.

Villa fans react

The club hailed the trio in an official statement, wishing them the best for the future. Villa also posted the news on Twitter and these fans were rather upset at the confirmation, with one ‘gutted’ and another even going to the extreme of calling for the manager’s head for letting the trio leave.
