Rangers fans slam Bassey vs Hearts

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left slamming the display of Calvin Bassey despite their 2-0 win away at Hearts in the Scottish Premiership.

The makeshift central defender was very shaky at the back at times, despite keeping a clean sheet, emphasised as he almost scored an own goal midway through the second half, with BBC reporter Colin Moffat labelling him a ‘lucky lad’.

The result was perhaps a little harsh on Hearts in the end, as they recorded more possession of the ball and more shots on goal than Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team (SofaScore), as they were just undone by two neat finishes from Alfredo Morelos and Joe Aribo early in the first half.

Nonetheless, it was no surprise that the home team had more possession and shots, given Bassey’s performance.

Sangakkara replaces Yuvraj as Kings XI captain

The Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara has replaced Yuvraj Singh as the captain of Kings XI Punjab for this year’s IPL

Cricinfo staff15-Jan-2010The Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara has replaced Yuvraj Singh as the captain of Kings XI Punjab for this year’s IPL. Speculation was rife over the past few weeks in India that Sangakkara was the man to take over the captaincy and Anil Srivatsa, the franchise’s chief executive officer, confirmed the news today.”Kumar Sangakkara is the new captain of Kings XI Punjab. We are hoping for good things to come out of it,” he told reporters in New Delhi.Under Yuvraj’s captaincy in the inaugural IPL in 2008, Punjab had qualified for semi-finals. But in the second edition, held in South Africa last year, they failed to make it to the last four. Yuvraj was Punjab’s highest run scorer in 2009 with 340 at 28.33, with two half-centuries, but that was not enough to lift their fortunes.Srivatsa said the move would not take away from Yuvraj’s importance as a star player, and that on the contrary the management hoped it would bring forth more runs from the allrounder. “Being taken off the leadership role does not diminish Yuvraj’s standing in the team. Yuvraj’s inputs are vital for us,” he said. “He has done well for the team in the past two seasons and he has one more year with us. He did his job well enough. This has got nothing to do with all this.”Sangakkara said he had spoken to Yuvraj immediately after being told about the change of leadership. “I have enjoyed playing under Yuvraj, he is a very able captain. When everything was not concrete, I spoke to him and after that I decided that it was the right time to take up [the] captaincy.”I don’t think it would cause any problem. He is a very good friend. I had a long chat with him on this, everything was done very transparently. Moreover, Yuvraj is the most important player in our side. Any IPL team will be lucky to have him. He can change a match just like that. He is a matchwinner.”Sangakkara was second to Yuvraj in South Africa with 332 runs at 30.18, with two half-centuries.

Joia faz treino separado

Injury ruins West Brom’s plans for Zahore

West Brom are currently third in the Championship and struggling to close the gap to put pressure on Fulham and Bournemouth in the promotion places of first and second.

The side have had various injuries over the season so far, but most of those injured players have since returned and became available for the Huddersfield game in the weekend just gone, the only notable absence was that of Kenneth Zohore.

Although already out of favour in Valérien Ismaël’s side, the 27-year-old striker has picked up a muscle injury in training that will see him sidelined for the next few months.

Speaking about Zohore before his injury woes, Ismael did hint that the forward could grasp an opportunity to earn his place in the side, but did not manage to mark his mark due to injuries ever since;

“At the minute it’s early – you never know what can happen.

“For Ken, it’s about patience, work, he wants to play every time with the under-23s which is a good sign. He wants to stay in the rhythm. He trains well. He is our player so everyone needs to be involved, stay focused and involved and you never know.”

This fresh injury won’t be too much of a concern to West Brom in terms of playing the forward, because he has seemingly had one eye on the door since the summer with links with a move away from the club.

Zohore has had 23 appearances, five goals and one assist for the side since he joined in 2019 from Cardiff City.

However, with the transfer window coming up in a few weeks, the opportunity to offload Zohore, who has cost the club the best part of £10.7m in transfer fees and wages, is looking unlikely in this fresh injury blow to the player, and could hinder the Baggies opportunities to get suitors for the player or a good offer on the table.

Ex Albion striker Kevin Phillips spoke out on Zohore’s future and his predictions for January.

“I think he’ll move on [in January],” Phillips told West Brom News.

“It’s clear that he’s not in Ismael’s plans. I know he played against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup but ultimately, his future lies somewhere else.

“Your guess is as good as mine as to where he goes. I think he’ll just want to go and play football, whether that’s abroad or he drops down to League One.”

Consider how poor his performances have been and his latest setback is sure to leave supporters rather angry that they might not be able to cut down on his salary in the winter, something that will no doubt prove important when welcoming new additions in their bid for promotion.

NSWE could get Aston Villa rocking with Fonseca

With Aston Villa boss Dean Smith fighting for his future at the club, NSWE could get Villa Park rocking again by hiring Paulo Fonseca as the club’s next manager.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days and weeks have suggested that Smith is under increasing pressure over his job, with a run of four defeats in the past four Premier League games naturally ramping up the scrutiny.

That was then followed up by suggestions that Villa have actually already sounded Fonseca over taking the reins at Villa Park, and that informal contact has been made with the Portuguese.

Exciting, attacking football at Villa

At Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk, Fonseca won three successive league titles and three successive domestic cups, while his spell at Italian powerhouse AS Roma saw him build the team into a genuine force in European competition.

Indeed, speaking to Tifo Football, The Athletic’s James Horncastle declared: “I’d put them with Atalanta and Sassuolo as the league’s entertainers,” while Alex Stewart described his style as “exciting.”

In fact, despite their Europa League exit last season at the semi-final stage, Portuguese journalist Alex Goncalves still backed Fonseca to enjoy a big career, tweeting: “It’s a bad result for Paulo Fonseca today, a 6-2 defeat to Manchester United. His managerial CV is exceptional, & his managerial ability matches it, but his time at Roma may be coming to an end. A talented manager who plays stylish football likely to be available this summer.”

Fonseca’s international reputation would increase the profile at Villa Park, and his continental success, especially last season, would bode very well for a club who are looking to be very ambitious under NSWE.

Quite crucially, it appears that he looks to play a front-foot style of football as Horncastle attests to, so the 48-year-old could be exactly the man to get Villa Park rocking.

Meanwhile, Ashley Preece has delivered the latest on Dean Smith’s Aston Villa future…

van Jaarsveld commits to Kent

Despite interest from other counties, Martin van Jaarsveld has signed an extension to his contract at Kent until 2012

Cricinfo staff03-Aug-2009Despite interest from other counties, Martin van Jaarsveld has signed an extension to his contract at Kent until 2012.Both Surrey and Lancashire had expressed interest in van Jaarsveld, who was voted the PCA Player of the Year in 2008, but the 35-year-old Kolpak player has decided to stay put.”This has been a difficult decision for me to make. Since arriving at the club my family has made many friends and I have much enjoyed my time in the county,” said van Jaarsveld. “It has been flattering to have received offers from other clubs, but I feel for my cricketing future and for my family Kent is where I wish to remain.”Graham Johnson, Kent’s chairman of cricket, added: “Everyone at the club is delighted that Martin has agreed to continue his career with Kent.  Since he joined us in 2005, his contributions both on and off the field to the development of Kent cricket have been outstanding. Martin has been one of the most successful players in county cricket in recent years, and it is great news that he has decided to continue his career at Kent.”

Simpson to struggle for Rangers vs Hibs

Frank McAvennie has now predicted that Jack Simpson will struggle for Glasgow Rangers up against Martin Boyle when they play Hibernian at home.

The Lowdown: Simpson criticism

Simpson has come under some criticism for his performances so far this season, both from Gers fans and journalists.

However, with Filip Helander currently injured, and Steven Gerrard being unsure whether Connor Goldson will be able to play, the Englishman may have to start again in the heart of the defence.

The Latest: McAvennie on Simpson

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie, who is now a pundit after playing as a striker for the likes of Celtic and West Ham United, has predicted that Simpson will struggle against Boyle:

“It depends on the opposition.

“They have a big game on Sunday against Hibs. That’s a massive game, absolutely massive.

“Hibs are on fire and they really know what they are doing. They will fancy their chances.

“They know Simpson is the weak link. You expect he will start with the Goldson issue.

“He’s not had a great time of it so far, he barely played last season. We’ll see what happens but I expect Boyle will run rings around him.”

The Verdict: Tough task

Given that Simpson has only played in three matches in total over all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt), and he is now under pressure to perform, it will be a tough task for him if he ends up starting, especially up against Boyle.

The Australia international has scored no fewer than 10 goals in 13 appearances so far this campaign (Transfermarkt), and may look to target Simpson when making runs into the box.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see whether the Light Blues can keep Hibs quiet for the whole game, and Simpson’s display will be key to that.

Celtic: Klimala loving live in America

Celtic may have signed 12 new bodies for the first team after Ange Postecoglou was made their new manager but there have been some riveting stories of former players in recent weeks.

Odsonne Edouard moved south of the border on transfer deadline day and with his very first touch of the ball, scored on his debut for Crystal Palace.

The Frenchman would net another in their win over Spurs on that same day but Olivier Ntcham and Kristoffer Ajer have also thrived.

Ajer was part of the Brentford squad who sealed a win over Arsenal during their first Premier League outing while Ntcham was in sensational form for Swansea last week.

The Swans were losing 3-0 at half time but his introduction saw the game end 3-3 as he registered a goal and an assist.

However, there is a forgotten man out in America who is very much stealing the show.

That happens to be Patryk Klimala, a player Celtic signed for £3.5m in the winter window of 2020.

The Polish striker was extremely average at Parkhead and struggled to find form, scoring just three goals in 28 appearances for the Hoops.

A move away this year was hardly surprising as the 23-year-old kick-started a mass clear out at Paradise.

He is now playing for the New York Red Bulls in MLS where he’s enjoyed a wonderful revival and is certainly showing what Celtic are missing.

Albian Ajeti has had his own mini-comeback at Celtic with three goals in his last three outings but that could so easily have been Klimala.

The Hoops did, at least, recoup the money they paid 19 months ago and for the American side, that’s now looking like a bargain.

During 2021, Klimala has found the net seven times and also picked up five assists for his new club in 20 outings.

That makes for impressive reading, especially when you consider that he’s scored in three successive games now.

What’s also intriguing is that he scored against Ronny Deila in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-celtic-news-duffy-mccarthy-brady-knockaert” title= “Read the latest Celtic news!”]

The ex-Celtic manager is now in charge of New York City FC but he witnessed heartbreak as his team drew 1-1 courtesy of a penalty kick from Klimala in the 12th minute of injury time after a VAR review.

So often used to being the man who was put out to pasture in Glasgow, his fortunes have drastically changed and improved since finding a new home.

Head Coach Gerhard Struber has been delighted with him since his arrival, commenting: “Patryk with his outstanding movements and with his pace, it’s not easy to handle.”

He is now one of the leading lights for the Red Bulls and is relishing his rise to stardom in America.
