Benjamin Mendy: Time to go after latest revelation?

Petulant child Benjamin Mendy has found himself in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons again thanks to more exasperating episodes of off-field antics.

As much as Benjamin Mendy was a lovable joker when he first arriving, brandishing his phone at any given opportunity to release a stream of semi-comical City related jokes into the world of social media, his novelty is rapidly wearing off, and the love fans once felt for him will understandably soon turn to frustration.

As per the Telegraph, Pep Guardiola has scrutinised Benjamin Mendy after the Manchester City defender was caught in a nightclub at 3:30am – hours before he was expected at training.

Understandably the Spaniard is unhappy with Mendy’s behaviour given just how much leeway the club have shown their resident clown, especially during the period of extended absence which has seen him don the blue shirt just once in almost five months.

Unfortunately, this is just another case in a long list of misdemeanours where Mendy has come under question, including a point in September when Guardiola had to publicly scold the Frenchman for turning up three hours late for treatment on an injury (as per the Telegraph).

After confirming he had made the training session in question, Guardiola admitted: “I would prefer him to go home earlier but I don’t control the players in that situation. They are old enough to know what they have to do. I’m not his father” – which is essentially a diplomatic way of saying ‘grow up’.

Manchester City simply cannot afford these kinds of events at the moment, especially from a player as influential in the changing room as Benjamin Mendy, and every little annoying moment like this plays into the hands of Liverpool.

Indeed, focus is the key now, with the club in line for a history quadruple, including the FA Cup, Champions League and Premier League title, and the left-back, who has contributed absolutely nothing so far this year, is the equivalent of someone doing the vacuuming whilst you’re trying to read the paper.

Manchester City fans, simple one: what are your thoughts on Benjamin Mendy? Let us know in the comments below…

Newcastle United: Controversial appointment would not sit well with fans

News is circulating that Shola Ameobi, who made 390 appearances for his hometown club per Transfermarkt,  could be offered a coaching role as part of the new academy setup at Newcastle in the near future, and it has raised some interesting questions for Toon fans.

The Newcastle Chronicle claim that the new role, due to commence at the start of next season, would be one of three positions to be filled, namely Loan coordinator, Under-23 manager, or assistant academy coach.

The club could see Shola as a suitable candidate due to his previous work with the youth teams, as well as having an integral role with the Newcastle United Foundation and the fact that he came through those very youth ranks himself.

But some Newcastle fans are taking a more cynical view of the situation.

Any potential job for Shola at St James’ Park, could be seen as yet another example of Mike Ashley’s reputation as giving ‘jobs to the boys’ following the former Newcastle player’s gushing comments in defence of the much-maligned owner, and his running of the club, when he appeared as a studio guest for a live game on Sky Sports earlier in the season.

It has been alleged in the past that Ashley is prone to repay those who play to his ego in public, as was seen to be the case when he employed known friends, Joe Kinnear and Dennis Wise, in prominent roles at the club.

The latter, of course, is public enemy number one with Magpies fans, after his staunch defence of Ashley throughout the season, and if initial comments on the Ameobi rumours are anything to go by, then the former striker may well be given the same treatment.

It is precisely this ‘you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours’ running of Newcastle United that makes Ashley such a despised figure on Tyneside.

The only way to bring success to a football club, is to employ the best person for the job in any, and every, role at a club.

If those in charge of personnel hiring at Newcastle United think that Ameobi is the best person to be involved with the development of young players, then they simply have not been looking hard enough.

If Ashley is not going to sell the club, then the least he can do is get the appointments while he is here right.

Finding jobs for those who speak highly of him is not the right way to go, and it will be a very shallow talent pool he is fishing out of, if he continues along those lines.

What are your thoughts on bringing Shola into the coaching team, or Ashley’s record for hiring his mates? Let us know below…

Leeds fans share thoughts on next two games

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans have been sharing their thoughts on Twitter ahead of their next two games as they look to tighten their grip on second place.

Despite Leeds being within touching distance of the Premier League some fans are lacking confidence ahead of their next two fixtures as Sheffield United breath down their necks.

Phil Hay pointed out on Twitter that both the Whites and Sheffield United have to play Preston and Birmingham in their next two fixtures. Some Leeds fans believe those teams will up their performances in order to stop Leeds’ promotion push.

Leeds have had consistent good results this season, but these next two games represent a real challenge for the Yorkshire club. They face a Birmingham team managed by their former boss Garry Monk and a Preston side who beat them 2-0 in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

Marcelo Bielsa has completely transformed Leeds United this season but as they approach the finish line a few fans are getting jittery about the run-in.

Here’s what Leeds fans had to say on Twitter…

Newcastle fans heap praise on revitalised Ritchie

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Newcastle fans have been discussing the form of Matt Ritchie, who has reignited his career in a new role under Rafael Benitez.

Newcastle put themselves four points clear of the relegation zone with a comfortable win over Huddersfield on Saturday, and fans were once again impressed by the form of Ritchie.

The Scottish international made his name as a winger at Bournemouth, using his wand of a left foot to whip in crosses and crack shots from distance, but his work rate and engine was his real asset.

He has failed to match the end product he achieved with the Cherries since making the long trip north, but the work rate has never faltered, leading to a change of position for the 29 year-old.

Playing as a left-wing-back in front of three centre halves, the former Cherry has the license to bomb down the wing and whip balls in towards the towering Salomon Rondon, but also has the engine to cover every blade of grass and defend stoutly.

Plenty of fans have been discussing his new role, and you can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below…

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s failure to solve right back problem could seriously cost Southampton

Southampton supporters have been pretty satisfied in the last few days after seeing their side extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to three games on Tuesday.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men went into their encounter with fellow strugglers Crystal Palace off the back of beating Leicester City and Everton in their preceding two matches, results which moved the Saints out of the division’s bottom three. Yet the South Coast outfit were unable to keep their winning streak going in only drawing 1-1 with Roy Hodgson’s side, with James Ward-Prowse’s effort cancelling out Wilfried Zaha’s opener to earn the hosts a share of the spoils.

Thus, there have been many satisfied Southampton fans up and down the country in recent times, although several may well be looking back at the January transfer window with an element of disappointment, what with the club unable to land a replacement for right back Cedric Soares.

The Portugal international made the move to Italian giants Inter Milan during the January window, thus leaving the Saints somewhat short of cover in that area of the field, only for manager Hasenhuttl to fail to bring a replacement to St Mary’s.

And failing to solve that glaring problem, given it now leaves the vastly inexperienced Yan Valery as the main option in that department, could seriously cost Southampton as they battle to avoid Premier League relegation.

Ultimately, while Cedric wasn’t quite as effective down the Saints right-hand-side during his final 12 months at the club, the Portuguese ace had proven to be a solid and relatively dependable option at right back – after all, he was a regular under Ronald Koeman, Claude Puel, Mauricio Pellegrino, and indeed Mark Hughes.

And with over 100 Premier League appearances to his name during his time on the South Coast, the 27-year-old seemed to represent the ideal player and professional needed to aid the club in their battle against relegation – going through it last season may have also rubbed off on this Southampton team.

Significantly though, his departure to the Italian giants has left the Saints short of options in that area of the field, as while Valery has been the main man at right back since Hasenhuttl’s appointment, his inexperience, alongside the lack of genuine alternatives, represents a huge gamble made by the Southampton manager.

Yes, 19-year-old has done reasonably well since coming into the team at the start of December, but his red card in their victory over Leicester City was an indication that relying on the young defender could prove problematic as the season wears on – ultimately, being the main man in that position brings with it a lot of pressure.

And that is why failing to land a replacement for Cedric appears to be something of a mistake from Hasenhuttl, as while he may not have felt the 27-year-old was the right man for his team, his exit has left his side short in that area of the field – and placing all the emphasis on 19-year-old Valery is certainly a risk.

As such, failing to solve that glaring issue he has in the right back department could prove very costly to the Saints as the season progresses.

Southampton: Blackmore provides huge boost

Adam Blackmore of BBC Radio Solent has provided a positive update on James Ward-Prowse.

The Southampton No.16 suffered a seemingly-serious injury in the Saints’ last outing against Tottenham in the FA Cup, following a collision with Ryan Sessegnon which left the midfielder hopping around the turf before having to be carried off on a stretcher.

It looked as if the 25-year-old would be out for a significant period of time, although Blackmore has now provided an update which will presumably be music to the St Mary’s faithful’s ears.

What did he say?

Blackmore tweeted: “James Ward-Prowse trained today for the first time since his injury at Spurs – Ralph H says he’s looking good for the weekend. Kyle Walker-Peters could make his Saints debut – fit and ready to play. So, good news for JWP & KWP !”

Big boost

With Southampton only six points off sixth-placed Tottenham, and with a kind run of fixtures ahead, Ward-Prowse’s potential return this weekend will come as a big boost.

The Saints academy graduate is arguably one of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s most important players, having started each and every one of the club’s 25 Premier League games this season while also playing 90 minutes in every outing – he is the definition of an ever-present.

Besides just having a perfect attendance score, the Englishman is also effective.

He is Southampton’s highest-rated player on WhoScored this term with an average rating of 7.08, which is even higher than 17-goal Danny Ings’ rating of 7.00 – seeing how hugely important the former Liverpool striker is to Hasenhuttl, you can only imagine how vital Ward-Prowse is if he has been performing better than Ings statistically.

Calling Premier League experts ONLY: Which year were these top flight clubs formed?

With a place in Europe next season very much in sight for Southampton, it is a huge boost for the club to have such an influential figure back in action – even more so when the signs looked ominous in north London recently.

In other news, Will Smallbone and Dan N’Lundulu have responded to Callum Slattery’s first Instagram post since departing St Mary’s…

Leeds fans react to Jack Jenkins signing his first pro deal at Elland Road

[ad_pod ]

Marcelo Bielsa may be resigned to a lack of activity in the January transfer window but that hasn’t stopped Leeds from bringing through yet another talented youngster from the academy, as Jack Jenkins signed his first professional deal with the club on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old put pen to paper on a contract which will see he remains at Elland Road until the summer of 2021 after becoming a regular for the Under-18s this season, where he has helped the youth side to pole position in the Professional Development League North.

Jenkins follows the likes of Jamie Shackleton, Leif Davis and Jack Clarke in making the step up to the first team in recent months and the midfielder will be hoping he can emulate the success the latter of which, in particular, has found under Bielsa – chances will surely come considering the lack of depth in the Argentine’s squad.

Clarke has made 13 appearances for the Whites in all competitions, chalking up two goals and as many assists, and has surely garnered the interest of a number of top flight clubs – at just 18, the winger looks to be an exciting prospect and the Elland Road faithful are tipping Jenkins to follow in his footsteps.
