Leeds could land Dan James before the transfer deadline but only on one condition

Leeds United could land Marcelo Bielsa one of his top targets but only if certain things fall into place in the next week…

What’s the word?

According to The Sun, Manchester United are willing to sanction Dan James’ loan move to Elland Road but only if the Red Devils secure Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.

It’s claimed that the Argentine chief has been in regular contact with their Premier League rivals over a potential move, and clearly has kept tabs ever since his move to Leeds fell through in January 2019.

The 22-year-old is currently the second choice behind Mason Greenwood and would fall down the pecking order with the arrival of any new right-winger.

Bielsa to finally get his man?

With the transfer deadline merely five days away, this is something that could well run down to the wire, which would leave Bielsa’s plans rather last-minute.

It’s no secret that James is hugely admired by the Whites boss, so perhaps it’s time he finally got his man? It could be a benefit for both clubs as there’s surely no one better to develop under than Bielsa.

Just look at Jack Harrison, Kalvin Phillips and even Ben White from last season.

The United winger has only played 46 minutes this season after appearing 33 times during the 2019/20 campaign where he provided three goals and six assists, also averaging 1.3 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per game, via WhoScored.

Old Trafford legend Peter Schmeichel claimed that James was a “fantastic signing,” claiming the £17.1m-rated star was “unbelievable, chasing every ball, he was in every counter-attack” against arch-rivals Man City.

Whilst a scout report from The Coaches Voice on the 22-year-old describes the Welshman as an “extremely agile and explosive footballer” but does note his lack of end product.

Which is something Bielsa would soon sort out.

If he’s to finally land James, the Leeds boss better hope Ed Woodward pulls his finger out soon. Although, the domestic window closing two weeks later provides some added hope.

Sheffield Wednesday: Fans react to Dom Howson tweet about Julian Borner

Journalist Dom Howson, who writes for Yorkshire Live, has tweeted aboutÂcentre-back Julian Borner, which has caused many of the Sheffield Wednesday fans to discuss the player.

The Sheffield Wednesday writer tweeted: “A year ago today, #SWFC completed the signing of Julian Börner. He has had his ups and downs but I think overall he has been a good free transfer signing.”

Since signing for the club, the German defender has made 37 appearances, keeping ten clean sheets and even managing to pick up one goal, per Transfermarkt. Clearly manager Garry Monk sees him as a good quality player as he has started him in a lot of games this season and at the age of 29, he looks like he will be in the starting eleven for a good couple of seasons.

However it seems like fans believe he is hit and miss and whilst some are appreciating his spell at the club, others believe he could have done better. The negative views perhaps come from a frustration at the team sitting 16th in the division with only four games left, per BBC Sport, with the German having played a major part in a largely disappointing campaign.

Here is what fans said following the tweet:

Spurs fans react as Fabrizio Romano delivers Luis Campos update

Tottenham Hotspur have a new saga emerging this week after Lille sporting director Luis Campos requested to leave the Ligue 1 outfit early, according to reports in France.

Many supporters are desperate to see the talent-spotter link up with Jose Mourinho again but a fresh update from the reliable Fabrizio Romano fails to provide much encouragement.

The Italian football journalist responded to one fan’s question on Twitter with the following news…

And it has led to many reacting on social media.

Campos is the man responsible for unearthing stars such as Kylian Mbappe, Anthony Martial, Fabinho and Nicolas Pepe. He also worked as a scout under Mourinho at Real Madrid several years ago.

The fellow Portuguese is known for finding gems at a low cost, which could be ideal for Spurs given the Evening Standard claiming that the north Londoners will only be able to operate in the free transfer and swap deal market this summer.

Joe Gelhardt: The Wigan Wonder

It’s not often a Liverpudlian talent goes under the radar but at Championship club Wigan Athletic, Joe Gelhardt is doing just that.

The Netherton born youngster arrived at the Wigan youth academy in 2013 and was quickly recognised as a special talent. He progressed through the ranks before being offered a full-time deal in 2018 and making his first-team debut at the mere age of just 16 years old.

Wigan aren’t highlighted for their production of youth as competitors in the North West such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City and Everton often appear more lucrative to a youngster who aspires to be at the top of the English game.

However, Joe “Joffy” Gelhardt opted to embrace an unconventional route, which has seen him recently reap the reward, as his boyhood club Liverpool have been linked with the England U19 ever-present.

When he burst onto the scene in 2019 it was a refreshing sight for the Wigan faithful, who rarely see young players break through and make them perch on the edge of their seats.

Gelhardt has developed into a strong and tricky attacking midfielder. The weaving Wiganer shows similarities to Lionel Messi with his wand of a left foot and the low centre of gravity, which ensures the grip of the crowd.

Isolation Busters: The only quiz you need to cure your boredom

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Plying his trade primarily in the youth set up he has assisted the Wigan team through big results in the FA Youth Cup before earning a tie against a Manchester United youth outfit at Old Trafford. Joe has found himself in the England set-up from a very young age, featuring for the U16,U17 and U18 sides, in which he is still an ever-present at just 17-years-old.

An astonishing record of 19 goals combined across those international age groups, in only 27 games, is what has attracted the attention of the giants Liverpool and also Everton in recent weeks.

The future is bright, irrespective of Gelhardt’s choice of club in the future. The primary focus for Wigan is securing the services of the hot prospect for as long as possible before a lucrative offer from a bigger club is too good to turn down.

The unfazed forward took to the Championship like a duck to water. The fear factor of a youngster driving at experienced defenders gives players in the Championship nightmares.

At such a young age, the world could quickly find itself at the feet of Joe Gelhardt with all the attributes to become a Premier League talent. His footballing intelligence is undeniable as he often shows his distinct lack of fear by continuously showing for the ball.

He is part of a thriving Wigan development squad headed by Gregor Rioch and with other starlets such as Jensen Weir and Kyle Joseph, you can expect to see Gelhardt making headlines a lot more in the not too distant future.

West Brom fans talk up Filip Krovinovic to replace their suspended duo

West Bromwich Albion continued their promotion push at the top of the Championship table with a resilient display over Hull City on Saturday afternoon.

The Baggies remain two points clear of both Preston North End and Leeds United as the international break takes centre stage for the third time this season.

When they return in a couple of weeks, manager Slaven Bilic will be without his integral midfield pairing of Romaine Sawyers and Jake Livermore as they both picked up their fifth bookings of the season, meaning they now face a one-game suspension.

Meanwhile, Filip Krovinovic has emerged as a potential candidate to fill in for them in their absence after his cameo performance against Hull, at least according to some sections of the Hawthorns faithful.

One supporter said that the Croatian playmaker reminded him of Robert Koren, who played for the west Midlands club for just over three years a decade ago, while another compared him to Lionel Messi.

‘Different gravy’ and ‘class’ were two other words used to describe the 24-year-old while one more said that Krovinovic is an obvious replacement for the Sheffield Wednesday game as he is the best ‘possession cycler’ along with Sawyers.

Here’s the best of the reaction:

West Brom’s Kyle Bartley has gone from zero to hero under Slaven Bilic

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

West Bromwich Albion defender Kyle Bartley has gone from zero to hero under manager Slaven Bilic and the Croatian’s latest comments praising the 28-year-old has only highlighted that further.

[ad_pod ]

What’s he said?

The Baggies defeated Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon as Charlie Austin’s 88th-minute penalty secured all three points.

Fellow striker Hal Robson-Kanu had opened the scoring inside ten minutes after he rounded off a sublime through ball from Matheus Pereira.

Albion made it a third straight win, but couldn’t make it a third successive clean sheet as Bilic was forced into shifting his team selection around in the absence of Jake Livermore and Romaine Sawyers.

Following the match, the former Croatia head coach highlighted the reason behind Bartley’s form this season, he said:

“Again against Sheffield Wednesday, he was very good.

“When I go into the town, when I read (the papers) I see that he is getting recognition. Maybe he should get more or whatever – but he is (getting recognition). And I think that is the reason behind his top performances.

“He is feeling that he is important – not only from me and my staff but from within the club and from in the stands and from the papers.

“He is playing great, he is that kind of player. He needs to stay focused, he needs to stay humble but he is also one of the reasons we are where we are.”

Zero to Hero

Bartley has almost gone full circle with fans at the Hawthorns since joining the club in the summer of 2018.

Games against Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday drew serious flak last season, but this campaign has been a totally different story.

Supporters have absolutely loved his redemption, as seen when reviewing his season to date just a few weeks ago.

The centre-back is just one of three players to start and finish all 17 Championship matches this term, so it is clear to see he is one of Bilic’s favourites amongst the side.

He has also won more Man of the Match awards (three) on WhoScored than any other member of the Baggies squad.

In other news, one of Bartley’s teammates has also received plenty of praise following their win on Saturday afternoon…

Gary Neville defends Spurs amid criticism of the club’s poor run of form

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Gary Neville has praised Tottenham for what they have achieved in recent years and suggested they have been unfairly criticised of late.

What did he say?

Tottenham have come under fire recently due to their bad run of form, with some suggesting that the players’ unhappiness with Mauricio Pochettino’s training regime has created unrest and contributed to their downfall.

However, considering the comparative transfer budgets and wage structures between Spurs and the rest of the top six, it is fair to say that they have overachieved in the last few years, albeit without winning a trophy.

As a result, Neville is choosing to look at the bigger picture, and doesn’t believe a few poor results should create media hysteria over the way Spurs approach their wage structure.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Super Sunday, he said:

“This team has eight times in the last ten seasons finished above Liverpool, it’s got to a Champions League final, it’s been run really well for quite a long time. They’ve played so well for four or five years this team.

“I don’t think they can go and pay the wages or wouldn’t pay the wages and that’s a decision that they’ve made as a football club and I don’t think we can sit here and criticise it.

“They either keep the players and let them run their contracts down or they cash in, they get criticised both ways.”

Breath of fresh air

Although they were busy in their recruitment over the summer by usual standards, various players continue to be linked to the club as possible solutions to help them pick up their form, including the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Nathan Ferguson and Max Aarons.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The chairman, Daniel Levy, brought in several multi-million-pound signings over the summer in Ryan Sessegnon, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso [who is yet to join permanently] despite the huge cost of the new stadium.

The summer spending spree was something of an anomaly in the context of Spurs’ recent windows, but the club have remained competitive during a tedious financial balancing act period.

They have had a lot of joy from their academy, too, and Levy and Pochettino collectively took the club to the verge of European glory.

Neville suggests that the club shouldn’t be criticised for their wage structure and the manner in which they deal with players, and considering some of the astronomical salaries that are being paid, it is easy to understand why the Sky pundit sympathises with the refreshing approach.
