Hauritz has no qualms playing in Pakistan

Nathan Hauritz, the Australian offspinner, has echoed Shane Watson’s feelings on the Champions Trophy in Pakistan, saying he didn’t care where he played as long he got to represent his country.Watson had said he’d play anywhere but some Australian players, including Andrew Symonds, expressed their reservations on touring Pakistan, which had two bomb attacks on its cities in the past two weeks. However Hauritz, who was named in Australia’s 30 probables for the Champions Trophy, said getting the chance to play for the national team didn’t happen all the time. “You can go to a number of places in this world that are dangerous,” Hauritz, who last played for Australia in 2004, told the Sydney-based . “But at the end of the day it’s not my call and it’s up to Cricket Australia. I’m sure they will do everything they can to make sure it’s safe.”Peter Young, the Cricket Australia spokesman, made it clear the board wouldn’t send players to a place that was dangerous. “We understand the players’ concerns,” Young said. “It is a concern of ours. International cricket is important to billions of fans around the world but, like Andrew [Symonds] said, ‘It’s only a game’, and the issue is if we can justify sending our players anywhere where it might be dangerous.”Australia are expected to take a decision on whether or not to tour Pakistan in three weeks. While the board, along with New Zealand Cricket and the England board, had hired Reg Dickson, an independent security expert, to visit Karachi and submit a report on the security measures for the Asia Cup, Cricket Australia’s own operations chief, Michael Brown, is not expected back from his annual leave till next week, Young said.

Tinha muita cobra no time.

Aston Villa: Tammy Abraham update emerges

West Ham have leapfrogged Aston Villa in the race to sign Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Villa links

Villa have been name-checked with an interest in the Blues forward in recent months. ESPN reported at the end of April that Chelsea were willing to part ways with the 23-year-old this summer, with Villa, the Hammers and Newcastle all keen on him.

The Mirror then revealed last month that Villa were willing to spend up to £40m on Abraham, with Crystal Palace also credited with an interest.

However, it appears as if David Moyes’ side are now at the front of the queue for the forward, who Villans assistant head coach John Terry hailed as “incredible” during his Villa Park loan spell in 2019.

The Latest: Source shares interest

According to Football Insider, who were informed by a recruitment source, West Ham are the current frontrunners when it comes to Abraham’s next destination.

The report suggests that an initial £30m could be enough to clinch a deal for the striker, with the Irons wanting cover and competition for Michail Antonio.

The Verdict: Wesley holds the key?

Dean Smith currently has Ollie Watkins, Keinan Davis and Wesley as central attacking options, with the latter linked with a move away from Villa Park.

Reports in March claimed that Villa would listen to offers for the Brazilian this summer, and should he leave, Smith may well be in need of another high-profile forward to challenge Watkins.

Abraham could be the perfect addition as he knows the club well and already has Premier League, Champions League and international experience under his belt. However, it seems as if Villa may need to act fast if they wish to sign him, or else risk missing out to top-flight rivals West Ham.

Nuno Santo shares Oliver Skipp update

Nuno Espirito Santo has reportedly confirmed that Oliver Skipp will be part of his first-team squad at Tottenham Hotspur next season, which will surely delight Spurs fans after his superb season out on loan at Norwich City.

What’s the word?

According to the Evening Standard, the new Spurs boss has told both Skipp and Ryan Sessegnon that they will be given opportunities to impress in the first team next season.

He said:

“Every player of the squad is in my plan, every player, every player.

“Even the Under-23s that are working with us are in my plans because this is how we build a strong group. Everybody is going to be needed.”

The Portuguese manager was hired late last month, which gives him a little over six weeks to prepare for Spurs’ opening game against Manchester City in the Premier League.

Considering no transfer business has been concluded so far by the North London club, it is perhaps no surprise that the Portuguese manager will turn towards the likes of Skipp and Sessegnon in pre-season, as a large number of Spurs’ players are still on holiday after playing at the Euros and Copa America this summer.

Can Skipp be a regular next season?

Spurs fans will be especially excited about Skipp, after the £9m-rated gem, who is a product of the youth academy at Spurs, was a key part of Norwich’s promotion to the top-flight last season.

The 20-year-old joined Daniel Farke’s side on loan for the season and was a regular as they won the title, featuring 45 times in the second tier and averaging a solid 6.90 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

He certainly won a lot of plaudits from Farke, who described him as the “perfect” player as a result of his performances and attitude during his time at Carrow Road. Consequently, the German manager will no doubt be disappointed if he cannot get him back on loan for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

However, Norwich’s loss is Spurs’ gain, as Skipp can provide Santo with an alternative to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in defensive-midfield after the Dane played every minute in the Premier League last season. He could also be an upgrade on Harry Winks, whose form has been less than impressive in recent seasons, failing to earn a seasonal average match rating above 6.6.

Skipp looks like he definitely has the potential to be a key player for Spurs in the future, and fans will be hoping that the 21/22 season proves to be his breakthrough with the Lilywhites after Nuno’s recent admission.

Saints fans rage at McCarthy news

Southampton fans are far from happy after it was revealed the Saints are set to offer goalkeeper Alex McCarthy a new contract.

The Saints went through a mixed term last time out, reaching an F.A Cup semi-final but also finishing in 15th place in the Premier League table despite a good start. Their defence was particularly disappointing – only West Brom (76) conceded more than their 68 goals in the competition (Sky Sports).

Ralph Hasenhuttl and co have already moved one goalkeeper on this summer, with Angus Gunn completing a move to Norwich City (canaries.co.uk).

However, it appears they are not willing to let £4.5m-valued McCarthy (Transfermarkt) go as well – according to The Athletic, he is set to sign a new long-term contract that will keep him at the club.

The news was shared on Twitter by @SaintsExtra, and it attracted plenty of attention from the Southampton supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Anderson incensed by Wisden comments on B.B.C. Breakfast News

Somerset Chief Executive Peter Anderson was so incensed this morning by comments that were made on Breakfast News by the Editor of Wisden that he has sent a strongly worded response the content of which is printed in full in the following paragraphs

Richard Walsh04-Apr-2002Somerset Chief Executive Peter Anderson was so incensed this morning by comments that were made on Breakfast News by the Editor of Wisden that he has sent a strongly worded response the content of which is printed in full in the following paragraphs. In his letter to the Editor of Wisden Mr Anderson says: “It is difficult for the specialist annual WISDEN to publicise itself with a kiss and tell story, so on the eve of publication its bully boy Editor seeks to kick the county game in an arranged but uncontested high profile interview on BBC’s Breakfast News.”There was no acknowledgement in the interview of the tremendous changes made by cricket in the recent past to raise competitiveness and attract what some may say is the mythical younger audience who should watch cricket. The wishes of committed, traditional cricket watchers who are quite willing to pay to watch on a regular basis the very game from which both WISDEN and its Editor earn their living, are ridden over rough shod.”The truly depressing thing is that WISDEN seems totally unaware of the changes first class counties are making to the way in which they prepare their players, play their matches, identify and coach emerging young talent and publicise and popularise the game with the young in their areas.”It seems fashionable in this country to ignore rural communities as politically and economically unimportant. However, reducing the number of first-class counties and basing those left on city-based clubs will leave huge swathes of the country and its population without a cricket team to watch within reasonable travel distance. Their cricketing hopes, aspirations and traditions will be ignored.”Somerset is a rural area, proud of its cricket team, the amateur club system and the vibrant youth system based on the first class club. So Mr Editor, leave our Club and cricket alone. We don’t care what you think and before you unashamedly arrange national TV interviews for commercial gain, question your own integrity in biting the hand of the game, which feeds you.”Most of all, though, question your own professionalism in making critical unbalanced generalisations about cricket, which have no relevance to that which occurs in Somerset. You do not know enough about the game you earn a living from.”To make sure that everybody is aware of exactly how incensed he feels about what was said this morning, a copy of Mr Anderson’s letter has been sent to the First Class Forum, John Read who is the Director of Corporate Affairs at the ECB, the SCCC Management Committee, the Editor of Wisden Cricket Monthly and the Editor of Cricketer Magazine.Recently Mr Anderson issued a new season’s greeting to all readers of the Somerset Website, in part of which he asks that if supporters hear criticism of the game that they should respond accordingly. The Chief Executive has therefore contacted me to ask readers of the site to react in the way that they see fit to the comments that were made on television this morning, and support him in his response.
