Mushfiqur tells players to step up in Shakib's absence

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim has said the absence of the allrounder Shakib Al Hasan for the first two ODIs presents an opportunity for the younger players to step up. Shakib, who played the two Tests, was ruled out due to a shin injury and Mushfiqur said the presence of four new players in the squad makes the task all the more challenging.”If we had Shakib we could have taken an extra batsman depending on the wicket,” Mushfiqur said ahead of the first ODI in Khulna. “Now our batsmen have to take more responsibility and the bowlers also need to do the same as we have one option reduced. Those in the team are capable but it will be challenging for them.”It is unlikely that all four new players will be picked for the first two ODIs. Sohag Gazi and Abul Hasan made Test debuts against West Indies, while Anamul Haque and Mominul Haque are yet to play international cricket.”It is a challenge for the new players as we think West Indies are stronger in ODIs than Tests,” Mushfiqur said. “But at the same time those who are coming into the team have been performing in their respective areas. Hopefully whoever debuts will continue to do so, and we can perform as a team.”Bangladesh have played just four ODIs this year, all during the Asia Cup at home in March when they beat India and Sri Lanka. Though they lost to Pakistan in the final, Mushfiqur said his team will bank on the positives from their performance in the tournament, ahead of the five-match series against West Indies.”We played well in the Asia Cup where there were a few big teams. We play consistently well in the one-day format so we are confident. We did not play too many one-day games too this year apart from the Asia Cup, so it is a challenge.”The other positive thing for me is that some of our batsmen are among the runs. If they can remain confident it will help us settle quickly,” he said.Mushfiqur said West Indies were “the strongest team” going around in ODIs at the moment, but was confident that if they can be contained, Bangladesh will hold the advantage quickly. The new ODI rules allow only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle for 35 overs in an innings, and West Indies possess some of the biggest hitters in the game.”If you see strength-wise, I think West Indies is the strongest team in the world at the moment. They have batsman like [Chris] Gayle, [Kieron] Pollard and [Marlon] Samuels who can play strokes at will,” Mushfiqur said.”But if we can maintain our line and length, and the spinners can get something from the wicket, we will be able to get them out. If we can contain them, build the pressure from both sides, hopefully they will also make mistakes.”

Key bemoans batting after heavy defeat

Kent’s seven-wicket defeat with four sessions to spare against Essex has virtually put paid to their faltering push for Championship promotion

ScorecardMaurice Chambers took four wickets as Kent succumbed for 101 in their second innings•Getty ImagesThe tea-time scones, fresh cream and strawberries were still served to the punters cramming the marquees at Kent’s Canterbury Week clash with Essex on Friday; the only pity was that, by then, the game was long finished and the majority of players had left the ground.Kent’s seven-wicket defeat with four sessions to spare against their previously struggling neighbours not only further savaged the dwindling Kentish coffers, but has virtually put paid to their faltering push for Championship promotion.Resuming on their parlous overnight score of 9 for 3, Kent proceeded to lose their last seven wickets for 92 runs in the space of 29 overs – and this against a three-man Essex attack already without their wily seamer David Masters, who was hampered by a side strain.Harbhajan Singh proved a handful in taking three, as did Graham Napier, who showed all his experience to also bag three and lend support to Essex’s spearhead, Maurice Chambers, who posted his first four-wicket return in two years.Kent captain Rob Key conceded afterwards that his decision to take first use of the pitch in this 161st Canterbury Week game was not a simple one.”There’s always something in the wickets here and, I have to say, I don’t mind losing the toss because it’s never an easy decision to bat,” Key said. “But one thing’s for sure, when we do bat, regardless of whether it’s second or first, we have to do it a fair bit better than we did in this match. The wicket was never bad enough for us to be bowled out for 101.”We need someone to come through the tricky periods and make a big score, but no one’s holding their hands up right now.””Had we set them 150-plus to win, then it might have been a different result, who knows, but setting them only 55 we had no chance. The margins in difference are quite small, but they might have made a big impression on the outcome if only we had batted that little bit more sensibly.”Needing 55 for their second win of the Division Two campaign – their first came against Gloucestershire in the opening round – Essex lost both openers within 15 overs. Azhar Mahmood, on his first Championship appearance of the season, snared Jaik Mickleburgh lbw as he wafted to leg, then removed Tom Westley’s off pole after an errant decision to leave alone.Owais Shah inexplicably holed out to long leg to gift Charlie Shreck a wicket and make it 35 for 3 but Ryan ten Doeschate marched in to finish it in no-nonsense style with a six into the Frank Woolley stand and a manufactured single to square leg.A delighted Essex captain, James Foster, said afterwards: “I thought this was a terrific result for us, and we needed it. We showed a lot of character and it was a big performance because it gives us a sniff of promotion and something to play for in the run in.”

Low expectations for West Indies

The Big Picture

The days when a West Indies series began with the expectation they would inflict a blackwash are long gone. Now they begin a series with many expecting they will be whitewashed. Unless weather intervenes, anything other than an England cleansweep is likely to be viewed as a missed opportunity. There are valid reasons for that. England are at home in early season conditions against a West Indies team that have been hindered by rain and late arrivals during their preparation. Despite a difficult winter, where they lost four out of five Tests, England remain a formidable team with arguably the strongest pace-bowling resources in the world.Yet, perhaps West Indies are not being given their due. Between the politics and batting collapses there have been a few signs that this team are starting to gel under the leadership of Darren Sammy. The 2-0 defeat against Australia looked comfortable for the visitors last month but they were tested on many occasions. In Fidel Edwards, Kemar Roach and Ravi Rampaul, West Indies have a strong trio of pace bowlers. If only they could put consistent runs on the board. Shivnarine Chanderpaul, despite being the No. 1 Test batsman, should not have to do it all on his own.For England’s standing in Test cricket – where they remain No. 1 by the skin of their teeth – they need to dominate this series. Not all the players have hit the ground running in the County Championship this season, notably the openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook, and that could provide an opening for West Indies. Ultimately, though, the depth of the home side should prevail.

Watch out for…

James Anderson was named England’s Player of the Year on Monday and is now rivalling Dale Steyn as the leading pace bowler in the world. If he stays fit, Ian Botham’s England record of 383 wickets is within his sights and he will expect to boost his tally against a flaky West Indies top order.Darren Bravo has a huge part to play alongside Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the middle order. His twin fifties against England Lions in Northampton gave an English audience the first glimpse of his huge talent, but West Indies need him to convert into three figures on the Test stage – a skill he has already shown at the top level.

Team news

Unless the hosts decide to be really bold and select five frontline bowlers, Jonny Bairstow will make his Test debut at No. 6 to become the 13th father-son combination to play Tests for England. Then the only decision is who supports Anderson and Stuart Broad. Tim Bresnan may just be leading the race ahead of Steven Finn and Graham Onions.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ian Bell, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Graeme Swann, 11 James AndersonOttis Gibson has hinted at a four-man pace attack for West Indies with Shane Shillingford, the offspinner, missing out despite his impressive comeback against Australia. There have been some niggles in the camp over the last week and Ravi Rampaul did not take a full part in training on Wednesday. Narsingh Deonarine is the man in possession at No. 6 but his late arrival may count against him.West Indies (probable) 1 Adrian Barath, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Kirk Edwards, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 6 Marlon Samuels, 7 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Kemar Roach, 10 Ravi Rampaul, 11 Fidel Edwards

Pitch and conditions

Chris Adams, the Surrey team director, was highly critical of a Championship pitch at Lord’s earlier in the season. It has been tough for Mick Hunt, the groundsman, with all the wet weather around but there is rarely a concern about one of his Test strips. At Lord’s it is often a question of looking up, not down. If it is cloudy expect help for swing bowling.

Stats and trivia

  • West Indies have not won an away series against anyone other than Bangladesh and Zimbabwe in 17 years
  • They have not won a Test at Lord’s since 1988 when Malcolm Marshall took 10 wickets in the match
  • England have churned out hundreds at Lord’s in recent years; since 2006 they have hit 24 with Kevin Pietersen scoring five, while Alastair Cook and Matt Prior have three apiece
  • This is the first Test for new MCC chief executive Derek Brewer

Quotes

“I’m excited about the challenges ahead, to come out at Lord’s again, and I’m hoping we will all show what we’re capable of this summer.”

Diego, ainda no primeiro tempo, garantiu o triunfo.

All-round Rajasthan cruise to title

Rajasthan became only the fifth team to win the Ranji Trophy in successive seasons, as they beat Tamil Nadu on the first-innings lead in Chennai

The Report by Nagraj Gollapudi in Chennai23-Jan-2012
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsRajasthan celebrate their second consecutive Ranji Trophy title•K SivaramanRajasthan became only the fifth team to win the Ranji Trophy in successive seasons, as they beat Tamil Nadu on the first-innings lead in Chennai. The defending champions had effectively won the match on the penultimate day, when they had bowled out Tamil Nadu to gain a 326-run lead. Having opted to bat again, the visitors extended the lead to 530 runs. Then to rub further salt on Tamil Nadu’s wounds, Gajendra Singh trapped Yo Mahesh and Abhinav Mukund leg before in successive overs, before both teams decided to call off the match before the mandatory overs started with no outright result possible. On Sunday, the main reason Rajasthan had not enforced the follow-on was to provide the pair of Vineet Saxena and Robin Bist the chance to get to 1000 runs in the season. Aakash Chopra did not show any inclination to stay out in the middle, at least on the evidence of his exit: he went for a pull shot from outside off, without getting behind the line of the delivery from J Kaushik. The bowler finished an easy catch after Chopra’s top edge ballooned over his head.Saxena, whose first-innings’ marathon 907-minute 257 was the third-highest score this season, could add only three more runs to his total of 10 though. He was the second wicket to fall in the morning, after Chopra. He had started the innings 116 runs adrift of the landmark but was bowled trying to tap the ball away without moving his feet against a straight delivery from R Prasanna. But Bist did not miss out – he became the 12th man in Ranji Trophy history to log 1000 runs in a calendar year. He reached the milestone by pushing a single to fine leg off Kaushik. He had already notched his second fifty of the match by hitting a nicely-timed cover drive of part-time slow bowler M Vijay. What Bist missed was his fifth century of the season, by eight runs, when he played a tired slog against Prasanna that was easily pouched by Mukund at midwicket. Still Bist, with four tons under his belt, finished the tournament with the most number of centuries. In addition to having the top two run-makers this season, Rajasthan added one more feather to their cap when Pankaj Singh, who had taken two wickets in the Tamil Nadu innings, finished as the third-highest wicket-taker with 34 victims. Only TP Sudhindra (Madhya Pradesh, 40) and Ashok Dinda (Bengal, 37), were ahead of him.As for the hosts, Tamil Nadu had to finish second to Rajasthan for the second straight year. Last year Rajasthan had denied the visitors a first-innings lead in the semi-final in Jaipur. This time it was much worse, as Tamil Nadu remained mute spectators all through the five days. Their biggest problem was the failure of their formidable top order, which showed no character or resilience barring the battling century from Dinesh Karthik. The only plus point for the hosts from the final was the bowling of Aushik Srinivas, the 18-year-old left-arm spinner, who bowled a record number of overs comprising long, attacking spells that did not allow the batsmen to play their shots with freedom.

O time rapidamente entrou no ônibus e iniciou a viagem rumo à Baixada Santista.

O elenco do Santos treina nesta tarde no CT Rei Pelé, momento no qual os titulares devem apenas fazer trabalho regenerativo. Os reservas irão a campo e apenas o aquecimento será liberado para a imprensa. Nenhum jogador concederá entrevista coletiva.

Man Utd: Journalist makes Pau Torres claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that incoming Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will be looking to add a new centre-back to the Old Trafford ranks this summer.

The lowdown: United’s defensive struggles

This season has been a wholly forgettable one for the Red Devils and much of the hardship has come from an inability to shore up a leaky defence.

So far this term, United have conceded 52 goals in the Premier League, more than every other club in the top nine and more than Liverpool and Manchester City combined.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Therefore, it’s unsurprising the central defensive department has already been earmarked as a position in need of strengthening over the summer…

The latest: Torres could be a target for Ten Hag

Speaking to GiveMeSport, O’Rourke named one man who is already on the minds of the Old Trafford hierarchy in terms of centre-back reinforcements.

He stated: “I think ideally Ten Hag will be looking maybe at a centre-half; Pau Torres from Villareal has been mentioned. And a defensive central midfielder will be required with Matic leaving and Paul Pogba set to move on as well.”

Torres has previously been linked with a move to Manchester, but it appears that the Red Devils will face serious competition from Manchester City for the capture. As per Fabrizio Romano, the 25-year-old’s release clause of €55m-€60m (£46.3m-£50.5m) ‘will be valid this summer’.

The verdict: Reinforcements needed

Despite appearing relatively well-stocked at centre-back when Raphael Varane arrived from Real Madrid for £41m (Sky Sports), neither Ole Gunnar Solskjaer nor interim boss Ralf Rangnick have managed to get the best out of the decorated Frenchman in his injury-plagued first season at Old Trafford.

The 29-year-old has made 27 appearances across all competitions in the current campaign, whilst Harry Maguire, Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof have achieved a combined 74 outings, highlighting an inability to find a settled partnership at the back.

Meanwhile, Torres has amassed 42 appearances this term for Villarreal, helping to guide the Yellow Submarine to a Champions League semi-final in the process. The 25-year-old has been described as an ‘extraordinary talent’ by former La Liga midfielder Javi Calleja and has so far lived up to expectations.

Boasting a 7.07 Sofascore rating, the Spain international has won four duels, made 3.2 clearances and completed 54.6 accurate passes on average per game. With figures like that, he would make a superb addition to the United ranks in a position where more consistency is certainly needed.
