Barcelona might be depending on Lionel Messi more than ever

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Barcelona’s start to the ongoing 2019/20 campaign has been a far cry from what they have probably wanted it to be.

Of course, La Liga’s curtain-raiser saw them defeated to Athletic Bilbao and that somehow set the tone of the upcoming games as well.

And true, the Catalan giants are currently top of the league and also top of their Champions League group so any supposed claims of a crisis are not exactly valid, are they?

Well, yes and no.

In the first four games of the new campaign, Barcelona tallied two wins, a defeat and a draw in the process. By their standards, that was a rather slow start that saw them yield the top of the mountain to some of their rivals.

Coincidently (or not?), that was also the period Lionel Messi was out of the team with a foot injury that made him miss, you guessed it, the initial four games of the season.

He was rushed back and ended up tallying some minutes in the next couple of matches but suffered a relapse and had to sit out one additional game once again.

Luckily for Barcelona, they managed to dispatch Getafe in a 2-0 victory even without their talisman, but by that point their struggles were evident despite results sometimes going their way.

And then suddenly they started stringing together victory after victory and clawed their way back to the top of La Liga, jumping over Real Madrid in the process.

So what changed? Messi came back, of course.

In the last seven games Barcelona played since his return, they won five, lost just one and tallied one draw along the way.

The little Argentine, however, bagged a goal and/or an assist in each of those bar the goalless draw against Slavia Prague at the Camp Nou. That makes for nine goals and three assists in seven games.

And how many have his teammates scored, you may ask?

A total of ten across all of those matches.

One man scored nine and the rest of the team scored ten, three of which were assisted by Messi as well. If we remove his contribution, that’s just seven goals out of 19 that were bagged without the Argentine’s influence.

So no, Barcelona are not in a crisis per se. At least, they won’t be in a real crisis for as long as the alien can kick a ball and have a say on that matter but what happens when he’s not around?

What happens when’s gone in the foreseeable future?

“Messidependencia” is not really a myth, it’s very much Barcelona’s reality – something that we’ve seen on previous occasions before with the player himself even forced to address the issue directly back in 2016 – and Valverde owes a lot to the little man from Rosario.

But the only way for them to really improve is to somehow manage to accomplish something without him.

Can they really do it? Only time will tell.

West Brom may be faced with a difficult dilemma after Oliver Burke’s loan update

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

It appears that West Bromwich Albion will see the return of Oliver Burke at the end of the season as Spanish football journalist Alex Kirkland believes his loan club, La Liga side Alaves, won’t make the move permanent.

What’s he said?

Burke joined the Hawthorns for a club-record £15m fee back in 2017 when ex-manager Tony Pulis signed him from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

Ever since then, the 22-year-old has failed to live up to the expectations that such money commands, scoring just once in 24 appearances.

After Slaven Bilic joined the club in the summer, it was soon clear to understand that Burke was never going to feature in his plans as academy prospect Kyle Edwards was promoted to the senior side, leading to him starting the first three Championship matches.

He was soon shipped out on loan to Alaves, where he has played just 332 minutes across nine appearances.

Speaking to the Express & Star about his temporary spell, Kirkland – from the Spanish Football Podcast – said:

“I’d say at this stage a permanent deal is quite unlikely.

“He’s probably not starting enough games to warrant that or contributing enough in the final third.

“But there’s still plenty of time for him to make an impact, it’s early days.”

Bad news Burke

It seems likely that the Scotsman will return to the west Midlands this summer, which would put Bilic in a bit of a predicament.

The Croatian clearly doesn’t fancy Burke in his side, for whatever reason that may be, as he made measures to sign a trio of wingers on deadline day in Matheus Pereira, Grady Diangana and Chris Willock.

Come the end of the current campaign, the Baggies flop will still have two years remaining on his contract, which is a potential source of bad news for Bilic.

If the 14th-placed La Liga side were the only team willing to take him, what hope does he have in recuperating the extortionate fee they paid for him?

It will be more problematic if they gain promotion too as if he can’t get in their Championship side, then there’s next to no chance he does it in the top-flight.

This is something that Bilic could probably do without.

Nottingham Forest are lacking a leader in Michael Dawson, says Kenny Burns

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

It’s like we’re playing a big game of Cluedo.

Everyone is trying to work out exactly what is going wrong at Nottingham Forest as they came crashing down to earth from their ten-game unbeaten run to now losing two matches in a row.

Former Forest man Kenny Burns has had his say on the matter and he thinks that it’s down to the absence of one man.

What’s he said?

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Burns believes that it’s in fact captain Michael Dawson that the cub have been missing the most, and that his partnership with Joe Worrall was one of the bedrocks of the club’s unbeaten run:

“Michael Dawson has been a big miss for Nottingham Forest. If he does come back from injury this week, it will be a huge boost for us. Dawson and Joe Worrall had been really good together as a partnership.

“They’d developed a strong relationship in the centre of the defence. I think we’d looked more solid when those two were playing together – and keeping more clean-sheets is something we need to do. I think we’ve missed Dawson’s leadership as well. He’s a proper captain.”

Time for someone else to step up?

There have been many factors that you can blame on Nottingham Forest’s recent slump, and the injuries that have hit the squad are certainly one of them.

But it’s the point about captaincy that raises a bit of a concern.

If they really are missing his captaincy and leadership skills on the pitch, isn’t that a little bit of an indictment on the rest of the players in the squad?

Does it suggest there is nobody there who is up to marshalling the troops? Isn’t one of the clichés in football that you want ‘eleven captains on the pitch’?

Indeed Burns himself said last month that he saw Dawson’s centre-back partner Worrall as a future captain of the club, but if he hasn’t managed to step up in the central defender’s absence, what sort of standard is he setting if he wants to get the job on a permanent basis in the future?

Check out Matchday with Max’s latest Nottingham Forest vlog in the video below…

So whilst the armband might be with 34-year-old Ben Watson when Dawson is missing, perhaps it’s time Worrall stepped forward and showed us what he’s made of because it’s not just the results that are on the line, but also his candidacy for the job next season.

Sheffield Wednesday fans hail Massimo Luongo after goalscoring performance

Sheffield Wednesday got back on track with three points on Saturday afternoon following their first defeat of the season under new boss Garry Monk in midweek.

Massimo Luongo’s goal in his first start for the club was enough to separate the Owls from Wigan Athletic, meaning they move to within one point of a playoff spot.

The Australian’s strike came just before the hour mark when he slammed home from 15 yards out from Adam Reach’s cut-back pass.

Wigan could have equalised minutes later when Kieffer Moore’s header was directed onto the crossbar by Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.

The home side also had a potential Steven Fletcher goal ruled out for offside.

Luongo has had to wait for his opportunity under Monk, making just five appearances from the bench this season, and Sam Hutchinson’s suspension brought that chance on Saturday.

Fans were clearly impressed with what they saw as they took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his performance.

One supporter claimed that Luongo showed why he should always be starting games while another said his finish was ‘pure class.’

The midfielder has been capped 43 times for Australia and made the move to Hillsborough in the summer, joining from Queens Park Rangers for an undisclosed fee.

Other fans described him as ‘magic’ and ‘different class.’

Here’s the best of the reaction:

Crystal Palace fans think Gary Cahill should be in the England squad

Some Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter in reaction to Gary Cahill’s tweet, saying that the 33-year-old should still be in the England squad.

The former Bolton and Chelsea centre-back – who joined the Eagles on a free transfer back in the summer – has previously earned 61 caps for the England national team, scoring five goals.

Cahill was part of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the 2018 World Cup, but has not been selected since, as he found himself out of favour at Chelsea under Maurizio Sarri.

However, he has been in excellent form for the south Londoners this season and you can definitely see where the Palace fans below are coming from.

Cahill has made six Premier League appearances so far under Roy Hodgson, helping Palace pick up four wins and a draw while also keeping two clean sheets – he has made a substantial impact on the defence at Selhurst Park.

Let’s take a look at what the Palace fans on Twitter have been saying about Cahill…

Liverpool’s Rhian Brewster could seize on opportunity created by Divock Origi injury

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Injury News series, which considers the impact of the latest updates on players’ fitness

It has been confirmed that Divock Origi is set for a short spell on the sidelines and that could provide the perfect opportunity for Rhian Brewster to stake a claim for a first-team place.

What’s the latest?

The Belgian was handed just his third start of the season for Saturday’s visit of Newcastle, starting once again on the left-wing, but had a minimal impact before being forced off through injury, making only 5 passes in his 37 minutes on the pitch.

It will be a blow for the 24-year-old, who has found starting opportunities hard to come by since returning from a loan spell at Wolfsburg at the end of the 2017/18 campaign.

He has made a valuable contribution over the last few months though, scoring important goals against Barcelona and Tottenham in the Champions League, but now looks like he will be on the treatment table for a “short spell” with an ankle injury.

His absence has prompted Jurgen Klopp to call up Brewster to the matchday squad for the trip to Napoli, and it could be a great chance for the youngster to show what he is all about.

Making a good impression

Brewster is yet to make his debut for the Reds but the 2017 U17 World Cup top scorer has impressed at youth level for both club and country.

This season he has two goals in four games whilst impressing academy manager Neil Critchley, and the 19-year-old will be hoping to do the same with Klopp.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He has previously featured in the matchday squad for important European fixtures against Barcelona and Tottenham, but he will hope to go one better this time around by getting onto the pitch.

The involvement of Brewster is positive for the academy, as it shows they will be considered if they’re good enough and show the right attitude, with Klopp offering a pathway to players like Trent Alexander-Arnold further evidence of that.

Tottenham fans welcome Danny Rose transfer news

[ad_pod ]

According to The Sun, Danny Rose is set to stay with Tottenham Hotspur beyond the end of this summer’s transfer window.

Rose was left out of Tottenham’s tour of the Far East with the view to completing a move away from the club ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

According to The Sun, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus showed “tentative interest” but neither submitted an official offer for the England international, who made 37 appearances in all competitions for his London club during the 2018-19 season.

As a result, the 29-year-old, who has recently been introduced back into the pre-season fold, is likely to remain with Mauricio Pochettino’s side this summer.

And it would be fair to say that the news has gone down extremely well with the Tottenham fans, who did not want to lose him in the first place.

Arsenal forward Aubameyang outs Mesut Ozil as a training ground cheat

[ad_pod ]

Football players will do anything to win.

Indeed, nobody likes to be on the losing team. Whether it’s a kickabout with your friends in the local park, Sunday league football, a game of Monopoly on Christmas day, beating your nan in a 100m sprint, or a full-blown Premier League outing, defeat is simply not an option. It’s the very reason you’ve got people like Michael Owen throttling shots at teenage hopefuls like it’s the World Cup (“well done, he’s only 13”).

Watch Arsenal Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Given the innate sense of raw competitiveness that scoots through the veins of any professional, it’s hardly surprising that, on occasion, they’ll try their best to appear more successful than they are.

Take Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s latest Instagram story, for example. Lurking in the background of the Arsenal forward’s victorious training ground side is a certain imposter by the name of Mesut Ozil, who Aubameyang has conveniently circled and outed for what he is: a cheat. Tut, tut, Mesut…

We weren’t born yesterday.
