No restriction on Pakistan players in DPL

Pakistan cricketers are welcome to play in the 2013-14 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, but have to provide no-objection certificates (NOC) from the PCB

Mohammad Isam09-Sep-2013Pakistan cricketers are welcome to play in the 2012-13 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, but have to provide no-objection certificates (NOC) from the PCB, said a BCB official on Monday. On the eve of the tournament, this was one of two major concerns as the organisers, Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM), also kept an eye on the weather.”We do not have any embargoes on players from any country,” CCDM chairman Jalal Yunus said. “We have repeatedly said that a player has to get the NOC from his cricket board. The process is for our clubs to contact the player, who will get the clearance from his board and if needed, we will help him with the visa with a letter.”From what we have heard from the media, they (PCB) want us to write to them. We haven’t done that with any cricket board. We have followed the usual practice with Sri Lanka Cricket, who have provided NOCs to their players for this league. We will continue to follow the usual practice.”The clubs have sourced players from Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, but have so far failed to sign those from Pakistan and India.Apart from player recruitment, the CCDM is also worried about the weather as it has been raining in most parts of Bangladesh. Bogra, Rajshahi and parts of Dhaka district are the main venues in the first two rounds of matches, and all three areas have experienced lots of rain in the past week. Rain was expected in September, and the CCDM has kept a reserve day following each day’s play.Defending champions Victoria Sporting Club will play their opening match against Kala Bagan Cricket Academy without any foreign players, rare for a Dhaka club. They will rely heavily on Bangladesh players Nasir Hossain, Anamul Haque, Robiul Islam and fringe players like Soumya Sarkar, Monir Hossain, Mohammad Sharif and Shaker Ahmed.Last season, Victoria enjoyed an exorbitant budget through the businessman Lutfar Rahman who has now moved on to become the chairman of Gazi Tank. Apart from Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan, their Pakistan recruits Kamran Sajid and Ahmed Shehzad contributed heavily. Shoaib Malik too played three matches while the left-arm spinner from India, Iqbal Abdulla, was effective in his four matches. This year will be different for the four-time champions who admitted that they had to spend cautiously. Gazi Tank have confirmed the services of the former New Zealand allrounder Scott Styris and the Sri Lankan Kaushalya Weeraratne, and boast local stars like Mahmudullah, Imrul Kayes, Raqibul Hasan, Rubel Hossain and Aftab Ahmed. But history will favour Abahani, who have won the tournament a record 17 times. Their stronghold began in the inaugural season in 1974-75 when they defeated little-known Shantinagar to win the title. They have also claimed three hat-tricks (1984-85, 1985-86, 1986-87; 1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95; 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09). They last won the DPL in the 2010-11 season. This season the Dhanmondi-based club have focused on youth, much to the frustration of their fans. Liton Kumar Das, Alauddin Babu and Taposh Ghosh, three uncapped but promising players were their first picks in the player-by-choice programme last month. They have only picked Shahriar Nafees and Nazimuddin as experienced players, while also bringing in Tharanga Paranavitana, Janaka Gunaratne and the 40-year-old Indika de Saram from Sri Lanka, seemingly to offset the heavy presence of youngsters in the side.

Duckett debut fifty shows promise

Ben Duckett, Northants’ 18-year-old wicketkeeper, made a fifty on first-class debut as the Division Two leaders drew with Leicestershire

ScorecardNiall O’Brien’s half-century helped secure the draw•Getty ImagesNorthamptonshire delayed their declaration until after lunch against Leicestershire to allow Ben Duckett, their 18-year-old wicketkeeper, to make a fifty on first-class debut.Duckett making an unbeaten 53 off 65 balls to give Leicestershire an unlikely target of 337 but the contest fizzled out as Ireland wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien struck a half-century against his old club.Northants were denied a fourth successive victory as Leicestershire unsurprisingly opted to settle for the draw, which they comfortably achieved as the two captains shook hands with the score 168 for 3 – O’Brien making 59 off 118 balls.Northamptonshire began the day on 94 for 5, 215 runs ahead of their opponents, but the loss of three wickets late on the third day inhibited their approach and matters got worse as Rob Keogh and Andrew Hall fell cheaply.Keogh was only able to make 10 before he was superbly caught by Leicestershire captain Ramnaresh Sarwan at slip off the bowling of Robbie Williams.Another terrific catch then did for Hall when Greg Smith snared him while diving to his left in Williams’ next over to leave the hosts on 112 for 7.Duckett rallied matters as Northamptonshire reached lunch on 190 for 8 but, to the surprise of many, they did not declare despite their advantage being 311.Duckett went past 50 off 64 balls in the second over of the afternoon, which finally prompted the hosts to declare leaving Steven Crook on 34 not out as part of a partnership of 82.With 63 overs to survive, Leicestershire’s openers started confidently although Smith fell one run short of his second half-century of the match when he was taken at first slip by Hall off Crook. That broke an opening stand of 80 with O’Brien, but the setback did not seem to unnerve the visitors, who went in at tea on 100 for 1.Ned Eckersley was then run out by Willey from short third man after a bright 42off 39 deliveries after O’Brien sent him back from running a quick single off James Middlebrook.O’Brien hung around to complete a patient half-century off 114 balls but he perished when he edged Australia international Trent Copeland to Duckett.Only one more over, bowled by Willey, was possible before the players called it a day just after five o’clock.

Tigers win sets up Vic v Qld final

A thrilling century by Mitchell Marsh on his return to Western Australia’s side was not enough to prevent Tasmania from completing a 51-run victory at the WACA Ground

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Feb-2013
ScorecardA thrilling century by Mitchell Marsh on his return to Western Australia’s side was not enough to prevent Tasmania from completing a 51-run victory at the WACA Ground that left Victoria to host Queensland in the domestic limited overs final.Marsh and the debutant spin bowler Ashton Turner added an audacious 86 after early wickets had all but ruled out WA’s chances of completing their chase of Tasmania’s 6 for 307 inside the 40 overs they required to claim a bonus point and sneak past the Bulls. However Turner’s departure to James Faulkner, who produced an influential allround display, signalled the end of the hosts’ serious resistance, which had been earlier blunted by Ricky Ponting’s chancy but at other times attractive 95.In his first match for WA, the former New South Welshman Burt Cockley nabbed a pair of early Tigers wickets with some disconcerting bounce, but after Ponting had been dropped by turner in the gully the visitors pressed on to a major score, Jordan Silk also playing neatly.

Wakely, Newton give Northants edge

Alex Wakely and Rob Newton each scored half-centuries as Northamptonshire tightened their grip on Hampshire at the end of the third day at West End.

17-Aug-2012
ScorecardAlex Wakely and Rob Newton each scored half-centuries as Northamptonshire tightened their grip on Hampshire at the end of the third day at West End. Newton struck a rapid 59 and Wakely was 61 not out at the close as Northants reached 176 for 5 in their second innings, a lead of 256 runs.Only home captain Jimmy Adams batted with any resolution when Hampshire began the second day 125 for 2 in response to the Northants’ first-innings total of 356. Adams’ third-wicket partner Liam Dawson was out without adding to his overnight 19 and James Vince continued his wretched first-class season when he was out two overs later for 4.Pace bowler Luke Evans dismissed them both to leg-before decisions and then David Willey reduced Hampshire to 176 for 6 by bowling Sean Ervine and winning another lbw appeal against Adams, who faced 184 balls for his 73, an innings which included 13 fours, but resistance after his departure was only sporadic.Evans came back to get rid of Chris Wood and Northants captain Andrew Hall polished off the Hampshire tail. Hall had Michael Bates caught at second slip by David Sales for 28, Kabir Ali caught at the wicket for a breezy 31 and then last man David Balcombe at 276. That gave Northants a substantial first-innings lead of 80 on a wicket which continued to help the quicker bowlers.Hall finished with 3 for 35, but for former Durham bowler Evans the day was a personal triumph, finishing with career-best figures of 4 for 38.Northants did not make the best of starts as they hastened to build on their first-innings success with Stephen Peters out in Ali’s first over and Niall O’Brien following to a catch at the wicket in the eighth. When Sales fell to a catch by Vince in the slips off Balcombe, Northants were 62 for 3. But then came a decisive stand of 99 in only 16 overs between Newton and Wakely as the Hampshire attack appeared to run out of ideas.Newton hit Ali for six and then did the same to successive deliveries from James Tomlinson, smiting nine fours also from 41-ball innings which turned the match in Northants’ favour. Tomlinson had Newton caught in the slips before Hall departed, but Wakely and James Middlebrook saw their side through to stumps in an unbroken stand of 15.

Ballance right in Yorkshire win

Gary Ballance scored an unbeaten century as Yorkshire made light work of chasing 185 to beat the Unicorns

27-May-2012
ScorecardGary Ballance’s unbeaten century carried Yorkshire to an eight-wicket win over the Unicorns at Scarborough.Left-armers Ryan Sidebottom and Mitchell Starc took three wickets apiece as the visitors were bowled out for 184 despite an unbeaten 83 from wicketkeeper Tom New. The Tykes slipped to 26 for 2 but Adam Lyth (60 not out) joined Ballance – who hit eight fours and four sixes – in an unbroken stand of 160.Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale put the Unicorns in to bat and Sidebottom removed James Ord in the first over for a duck before switching ends and adding the scalp of Michael Thornely, caught by Phil Jaques for 20. As wickets fell steadily, New was left as the mainstay of a score which always looked like being below par, especially once Starc removed captain Keith Parsons for 19.From 107 for 4 at that point, the Unicorns slipped to 150 for 7 as Starc took three wickets for six runs in 3.1 overs. Former Leicestershire man New reached a 67-ball half-century in between but Moin Ashraf claimed two tail-end wickets before Sidebottom returned to pick up Steven Cheetham with the final ball of the innings and finish with 3 for 44.Gale made 17 in an opening stand of 23 with Lyth, but he was trapped in front by Warren Lee before Jaques edged Glen Querl to New having made just 3.Lyth hit three fours in Lee’s next over, giving Ballance leeway to play himself in patiently. The Zimbabwe-born 22-year-old stepped up the pace with two sixes in successive Luke Beaven overs and soon passed Lyth’s scoring rate, reaching his half-century from 58 balls before hitting Lee for two sixes and a four in successive balls.Lyth took 71 balls to reach 50, by which time Ballance was on 98. The latter moved to three figures with a four off Bradley Wadlan from the 88th ball he faced before Lyth hit the winning boundary off Querl.

Central Districts beat Otago to go top

A solid batting performance was the backbone of Central Districts’ 28-run win over Otago which took them to the top of the HRV Cup table

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Jan-2012A solid batting performance was the backbone of Central Districts’ 28-run win over Otago which took them to the top of the HRV Cup table. The weather had frustrated CD in their previous two outings but with the rains finally relenting, they pulled off a victory that pushed them two points above three second-placed teams. Each of CD’s top six reached double-digits as they piled on 170 after winning the toss at the Saxton Oval in Nelson. Peter Ingram made the most meaty contribution, a 30-ball 42, and Doug Bracewell was the most aggressive, slamming two sixes in a 12-ball 27.Otago’s chase got off to a poor start as two of their players with international experience, captain Brendon McCullum and Neil Broom, were dismissed within the third over. Adam Milne, the highly rated 19-year-old fast bowler who was playing only his second game of the tournament due to injury problems, was the most successful of the bowlers, taking three wickets as Otago’s batsmen struggled to make big contributions – six of them reached double digits, but fell before reaching 20.
