Sky Sports: Man United Hold Talks For "Calm" 23 y/o

Manchester United have held discussions with the representatives of Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, according to Sky Sports reporter Melissa Reddy.

Are Man United signing Jean-Clair Todibo?

The Red Devils have already made three big-money signings so far this summer in Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, but there could still be room for further arrivals before the September 1 deadline.

However, attention appears to be on moving players on ahead of the club’s Premier League opener with Wolves, one of which being Harry Maguire. The centre-back now appears to be closing in on a £30m transfer to West Ham after an agreement was reached on Wednesday.

As a result, Erik ten Hag could be on the hunt for a new defender to replace Maguire, with Todibo a player who has been heavily linked in recent weeks.

Fabrizio Romano claimed earlier in the window that Man United were still monitoring Todibo ahead of a possible deal after scouting the Frenchman and new Chelsea signing Axel Disasi, with a new update now emerging.

Reddy took to X on Wednesday morning after the news broke regarding Maguire and a move to West Ham. The senior Sky Sports reporter said that the Red Devils “have done due diligence on several defenders” and have held talks with the agents of Todibo over a potential transfer.

“Manchester United have done due diligence on several defenders, including Jean-Clair Todibo of Nice, should they be in a position to sign a replacement for Harry Maguire.

“Discussions with Todibo's representatives have taken place to gauge the parameters of a potential deal.”

Erik ten Hag

How good is Jean-Clair Todibo?

The 23-year-old has been on the books at Toulouse, Barcelona, FC Schalke, Benfica and Nice during his career and appears to be going from strength to strength in France.

Now valued at a career-high €30m by Transfermarkt, Todibo is an out-and-out centre-back who has made over 100 appearances for his current employers.

He has even previously been hailed by German legend Lothar Matthaus, who praised the player for being "incredibly calm".

“Todibo is the best centre back I’ve seen in a long time.

“At 20 he is incredibly calm, he always finds interesting solutions.”

As per FBref over the past 12 months, Todibo has been compared to Red Devils star Lisandro Martinez and ranks highly in a number of areas compared to his positional peers.

When it comes to tackles, Todibo places in the 90th percentile, whereas he also ranks in the top 5% of centre-backs for successful take-ons, showing his ability both on and off the ball. Other stats where he has impressed are progressive passes and passes into the final third and he is also in the top 7% for dribblers tackled and the top 4% for ball recoveries.

Therefore, should Maguire complete his £30m move to the London Stadium over the coming days, United may well look to use that money to fund a move for Todibo, who could come in and rival Martinez and Raphael Varane with a busy season ahead which includes Champions League football returning to Old Trafford.

Leeds Monitoring "Unbelievable" £15m Machine This Summer

Leeds United's return to the Championship commences this weekend, and while manager Daniel Farke has already bolstered the squad with several signings, the German could now move for Coventry City star Gustavo Hamer.

What's the latest on Gustavo Hamer to Leeds?

That's according to Football Insider, who have revealed that the Whites are now hoping to sign a midfielder before the transfer window closes at the end of August.

Hamer has been exemplary for Coventry and was the centrepiece of their 2022/23 campaign, where they lost to Luton Town in the Championship play-off final, and as such Leeds are hoping to seal a deal.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

Leeds are monitoring the situation, but it does remain to be seen whether 49er Enterprises – the club's owners – will meet the club's valuation, which could be as high as £15m.

How good is Gustavo Hamer?

The interest in Hamer is hardly surprising given the Elland Road side's losses this summer – Marc Roca and Brenden Aaronson have left on loan deals following relegation, while veteran Adam Forshaw's contract has expired.

So it's understandable that the West Yorkshire club will be targetting a suitable replacement; whether they can snatch Hamer from City is another question.

He's held in very high regard among the Sky Blues fold, with teammate Marko Marosi saying: "Gustavo is unbelievable. He's a funny guy as well and a great character."

As per Sofascore, the Dutch-Brazilian recorded an average match rating of 7.35 in the Championship last year, scoring nine goals and supplying ten assists, averaging 1.8 key passes, 2.6 tackles and one interception per game, and succeeding with 57% of his dribbles.

Such a dynamic and all-encompassing midfielder could lead Farke to mould the 26-year-old into his next James Maddison, with the England international – who completed a £40m move from relegated Leicester City to Tottenham Hotspur in June – scoring 15 goals and supplying 12 assists from 49 appearances under the manager's leadership at Norwich City.

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison.

At present, Maddison stands tall as one of Europe's foremost creative midfielders, ranking among the top 11% of positional peers for assists, the top 13% for shot-creating actions, the top 15% for progressive passes and the top 17% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

Comparatively, Hamer ranks among the top 6% of midfielders across Men's Next Eight divisions over the past year for goals, the top 3% for assists, the top 5% for shot-creating actions, the top 12% for progressive passes and the top 13% for tackles per 90.

The 26-year-old Maddison, who has been described as a "magician" by Statman Dave, was first-rate in the second tier back in 17/18 and recorded a stunning average Sofascore rating of 7.59, averaging 2.8 key passes per game, completing 86% of his passes, making 1.1 tackles per match and succeeding with 68% of his dribbles.

He was pivotal for the Canaries and flourished despite their 14th-placed finish, and with the Leeds squad hoping for an instant return to the top-flight, Hamer could play the same role but contribute towards an ascension right back to prominence.

Nottingham Forest Could Sign Their Own Perisic For £13m

Nottingham Forest are still on the search for new additions who can add much-needed quality to the squad this season, and now a fresh update has emerged on a potential transfer target.

Who do Nottingham Forest want to sign?

According to La Stampa (via TuttoJuve), Nottingham Forest are interested in signing star from Juventus this summer.

The player in question is Filip Kostic but Garibaldi chiefs are yet to make a concrete offer.

As per the report, the Serie A giants are willing to part ways with their player this summer to bolster funds and are commanding a €15m (£13m) fee to part ways with the Serbian.

What is Filip Kostic's play style?

The Juventus ace is an extremely versatile and dynamic left-sided player who can play as a left-back, left-winger or a flying left-wing back, with the latter being the most likely role he would be required to play at the City Ground.

filip-kostic-juventus-premier-league-nottingham-forest

Steve Cooper has a number of roles that he is looking to fill over the remaining weeks of the transfer window to ensure Forest can comfortably compete in the Premier League season and the pressure will be mounting after taking their first defeat of the campaign against Arsenal on Saturday.

As a result, the signing of Kostic would add huge quality and a wealth of experience to the team, providing Cooper with a strong creative outlet and dominant presence to work with this season.

The Serbia international – once hailed "extraordinary" by former Frankfurt sporting director Fredi Bobic – is one of the most underrated progressive and prolific wing-backs in the top five European leagues – ranking in the top 10% of positional peers for shots on goal, assists, shot-creating actions, progressive carries and progressive passes received.

As such, the Tricky Trees boss could even land his very own Ivan Perisic as the Tottenham Hotspur wing-back is named as one of the most comparable players to Kostic over the last 12 months, as per FBref.

When comparing Kostic's output to Perisic's last season, the Juve machine shared many similarities with the Spurs star including assists registered (8 v 8), shots on target rate (28.9% v 27.6%), pass completion (68.1% v 63.6%), shot-creating actions per 90 (3.21 v 3.20), goal-creating actions (0.41 v 0.47), successful take-ons (43.6% v 45%) and aerial duels won (50% v 50.8%).

It paints the picture that both are confident in possession with the ability to surge forward at will down the flanks.

Ivan Perisic for Spurs

Three-time Serie A winner Massimo Bonini waxed lyrical about Kostic in an interview, summarising his best qualities aptly:

“(Kostic) is a great player. He is good in one-v-ones. He creates a lot of assists, and is now also managing to score goals. He is always able to find the right time to cross the ball, despite the presence of defenders."

Meanwhile, former Frankfurt coach Oliver Glasner revealed the Serbian's strongest quality:

"Filip has the outstanding ability to see the free man in the middle under the highest pressure. And the technical quality to find him."

With that being said, it would be a no-brainer for Forest to secure Kostic's signature this summer as he could be the huge game-changer needed in the attacking threat on Trentside and could be the difference in competing in the top-flight or suffering another relegation scrap this season.

Southampton: Russell Martin Targeting Move For "Excellent" Target

As Southampton look to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, manager Russell Martin has reportedly identified the target that he wants to focus on to close out his first transfer window as Saints boss.

So far this summer, the recently relegated side have welcomed four reinforcements, whilst bidding farewell to the likes of Romeo Lavia and James Ward-Prowse.

That number could stretch to five in the coming weeks, however, as Southampton turn to Leeds United.

What's the latest on Cody Drameh to Southampton?

According to Fabrizio Romano, Martin has set personally his sights on long-term target Cody Drameh. The right-back's Leeds contract expires next summer, making him a free agent, and the Southampton manager is even willing to wait until January to land him in a cut price deal.

Of course, from a Leeds perspective, selling to a potential promotion rival would be far from ideal, but if Drameh doesn't put pen to paper on a new deal then they could be left with no choice.

It remains to be seen just how much the Yorkshire club would demand for the fullback, though, with Transfermarkt's valuation sitting at €3.5m (£3m). The Saints could, of course, use the funds potentially gained through the sale of Che Adams, amid Everton's reported £12m bid for the striker.

Should Southampton sign Cody Drameh?

cody-drameh-leeds-united-luton-loan-academy-luke-ayling

After losing Livramento to Newcastle United, Southampton could undoubtedly do with a reinforcement at right-back, particularly a younger option to replicate Livramento's impact. And that's where Drameh could come in.

As things stand, Kyle Walker-Peters is Martin's first-choice option, but beyond that, the Saints lack depth on the right-hand side of their backline. Drameh, still only 21-years-old, enjoyed an excellent season last time out on loan at Luton Town, where he played a key role in helping the Hatters to gain promotion to the top flight.

Southampton will be hoping for the England U21 international to have a similar impact if they push ahead to secure his signature before the transfer window slammed shut.

Drameh also spent some time on loan at Cardiff City, where he earned plenty of praise, with former boss Steve Morrison saying, via Wales online: "He has been excellent. He was excellent in his first game, he was excellent at Barnsley, it was a right scrap but there were a few things when he was running back and making last-ditch tackles.

"He had a little bit of a down game, the Bristol City game, but outside of that he has been excellent. Having that break in the Liverpool game when he couldn't play, letting his body catch up on where it needs to be, now he is like a Duracell Bunny, isn't he? He just keeps going and going."

With that said, it's no surprise that Martin is a long-term admirer of Drameh, and if Southampton can finally welcome the fullback, they'll have themselves a solid addition to aid in the quest for promotion, damaging a rival in the process.

Liverpool Could Deal Another Blow To Man Utd By Signing £151k-p/w Machine

Liverpool are likely working hard behind the scenes to identify a new signing to complete the midfield rebuild, but with the transfer window shortly closing, the club will now need to act incisively.

The winds of change have been blowing at Anfield this summer, and while Jurgen Klopp's side have started the Premier League season well – defeating Bournemouth and Newcastle United and drawing away to Chelsea – there are concerns that not enough has been done on the transfer front.

The Reds will likely push to sign at least one player, with reports indicating that attention is on young Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

What's the latest on Ryan Gravenberch to Liverpool?

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool are in direct contact with Gravenberch's agents ahead of a possible transfer in the window's dying embers, with Bayern understood to have changed their stance on a player previously considered untouchable.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

The Athletic's David Ornstein has recently claimed that Manchester United have the Dutchman on their radar, though are currently pushing to complete a loan move for Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat.

How good is Ryan Gravenberch?

Once hailed as the Netherlands' "greatest talent" by former Ajax forward Wim Kieft, Gravenberch was instrumental for de Godenzonen in their trophy-winning escapades before completing a €24m (£20m) transfer to the imperious Bundesliga giants last summer.

While he arrived as one of Europe's most prodigious talents, Gravenberch failed to make a mark in Germany and was handed just three Bundesliga starts all season, making just one brief cameo against Augsburg thus far this term.

Despite this, the £151k-per-week gem ranks among the top 4% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for shot-creating actions, the top 19% for progressive passes, the top 13% for successful take-ons and the top 18% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch.

Such an all-encompassing set of skills from such little match action is a testament to Gravenberch's innate ability, a technicality transcending the throngs of midfield hopefuls across Europe, and under Klopp's stewardship, he could be unlocked and nurtured to his full potential, described as a "dominant" machine in the engine room by former youth coach Brian Tevreden.

By sealing a swoop, Klopp could repeat his previous dealing with the German champions in signing Thiago Alcantara for £25m in 2020, with the distinguished Spaniard making 97 appearances and earning praise for his "staggering" performances by pundit Michael Owen, albeit spending a lot of time on English shores shackled to the medical room.

Given that Manchester United were believed to hold a firm interest in the 32-year-old pass-master prior to Liverpool's acquisition, Klopp could now seek to emulate his own former deal and claim a new Bavarian star to play a part in a new fight for illustrious success, potentially leaving the Red Devils in the dirt.

Sport Bild reporter Christian Falk has claimed that Liverpool are willing to make a £20m bid for the rising star, and doing so could prove to be another Klopp masterstroke in dipping into Bayern's transfer pool and procuring one of their most talented midfielders.

Having beaten Manchester United to the signing of Thiago, the Merseyside outfit now have the opportunity to repeat the feat and bag Gravenberch's signature for years to come.

Revealed: Every Premier League Club’s Favourite Referee

The introduction of VAR into the Premier League was supposed to reduce the spotlight on referees. Instead, it now feels brighter than ever, with some fans dreading the prospect of a big game managed by certain refs.

Football FanCast thought it was time to take a look into the data, and view things from a more 'positive' light. Who are the 'best' refs for each Premier League side right now? From Arsenal to Wolves, here's who you should all feel lucky to have.

All statistics are correct as of 1st September 2023, via Transfermarkt.

Arsenal – Anthony Taylor

Only four referees have taken charge of an Arsenal game on more occasions than Anthony Taylor, and only one – Michael Oliver – remains active. But the Gunners undoubtedly boast their best record with Taylor at the helm.

They've won 22 of their 41 games with Taylor, losing only eight times. It's not 'by far' their best – Arsenal have won nine of the 16 games taken by Chris Kavanagh, for instance – but in terms of sheer quantity, the Gunners can feel relatively confident with Taylor.

Though, it's worth noting that despite the success, Taylor has given more penalties against Arsenal than for them (7 for, 10 against). Clearly, that doesn't hurt them much.

Aston Villa – Stuart Attwell

Stuart Attwell has only actually taken charge of 13 Aston Villa games. That's certainly way down on, say, Michael Oliver's 31.

Unlike with Oliver, though, Villa typically do well with Attwell running the game. Seven wins in 13 games is their best record with any active referee – and actually one of their best historically, too.

Villa have certainly had some 'mixed' periods in the Premier League era, of course, and that means records with certain referees are downright horrible.

With Attwell, though, things go alright – he's never sent a Villa player off, while he's given them twice as many penalties (4 to 2 against).

Bournemouth – Paul Tierney

Bournemouth haven't been a Premier League side for all that long, and they certainly haven't been competing at the top of the table. The result is that there are few refs with which they have a positive record.

They'll be gutted that Lee Probert is done, though – they only lost one of the nine games he took charge of. In fact, Probert gave three penalties the Cherries' way without ever giving one against them. Unfortunately, he has now stepped down.

And that leaves Paul Tierney as the standout. The record isn't spectacular, but at least it is positive – 13 games, six wins, two draws, five defeats. He's never actually given Bournemouth a penalty, however.

Brentford – Michael Oliver

No single referee has taken charge of Brentford on more than eight occasions in the Premier League. They haven't been in the top flight for very long, in other words.

But as with most clubs, Michael Oliver has been the ref on more of those occasions than most. We're only talking five games here, but that's third on the list.

And Brentford's record with Oliver is really, really good. They've never lost a game with him as the referee, and won four of those five clashes, drawing the other.

It doesn't really get better than that – he's even sent two opponents off without giving the Bees a red. What more can you want?

Brighton – Andrew Madley

Another one here where a club has never lost with a certain referee in charge. Andrew Madley has been a very lucky charm for Brighton, taking charge of nine of their games.

Six of those have gone the way of the Seagulls, including their recent success at Wolves. Any time you can have an nine-game unbeaten run, things are going well for you.

It's worth mentioning that there haven't been any red cards in those games, either. The penalty split is two for, one against – so it's not as though there's anything drastic swinging the record Brighton's way. They just do really well.

Burnley – Chris Kavanagh

Burnley are back in the Premier League after their promotion last season. Unfortunately, though, the referees who were typically good to them are now gone.

Their record with Martin Atkinson, for instance, was fantastic – 24 games, 11 wins, six draws. Even with Mike Dean, Burnley won and drew more often than they lost.

As for active refs, though, we'll go with Chris Kavanagh. Burnley have actually lost more than they've won – three wins, five defeats – but their overall record sees them avoid defeat more often than not.

That's helped by six draws, meaning nine of the 14 games have brought home at least a point.

No, it's not a phenomenal record, but it's a lot better than they have with others…

Chelsea – Chris Kavanagh

Chelsea have been in the Premier League for over 30 years now, so some referees have some quite incredible numbers with them. Yet, we're going to go with a ref who has just 10 matches in charge.

And that's because it's very difficult to get a better record than Chelsea have with Chris Kavanagh. Yes, it's only 10 games, but the Blues have won nine of them, losing the other. 27 out of 30 points is quite clearly phenomenal.

We will give a little shoutout to Anthony Taylor, though, given his reputation with Chelsea. Their record with him is actually very, very good – 37 played, 17 wins, 13 draws, and only seven defeats.

No other referee in PL history has dished out more than his four red cards to Chelsea opponents, either. It's one of the best active records of any ref with the club, just not quite on Kavanagh's level.

Crystal Palace – Paul Tierney

We couldn't quite believe how difficult this one was. Palace haven't been a terrible side by any means in recent years, but finding a decent record here was a struggle.

We were also surprised to see they never won a Premier League match refereed by Mark Clattenburg in 15 attempts.

We've gone for Paul Tierney here, though, as their record is unquestionably positive. It's only 13 games, but six were wins with another four draws.

Palace do very well with him in charge, especially as he's never given them a red card while dishing out three to opponents. It's a similar story with penalties – three for, one against.

Everton – David Coote

Maybe this shouldn't be a shock, but Everton's records with referees are all over the place. Or maybe it's more that they're not all over the place.

Basically, they're all incredibly even – if a referee has seen the Toffees win lots, they've also seen them lose lots. Or, in the case of Michael Oliver, they just draw all the time (19 in 46 games).

David Coote, though, is typically good to them. There have only been 13 matches with him in charge, but Everton have won over half (7) and lost just three.

Maybe it reflects even better on the club that his red card and penalty stats are identical both for the Toffees and their opponents, too. But as we say, Everton's wild inconsistency made this one a little tough.

Fulham – Stuart Attwell

The bulk of referees to manage Fulham games have now retired – the top 13 in terms of appearances, to be precise. It doesn't really leave too much to work with.

It's also the first time we've seen multiple referees with whom a club has never won – Craig Pawson (7 matches) and Paul Tierney (6 matches). We've gone for Stuart Attwell as their most favourable ref, though, as his record is actually quite balanced.

Perfectly, in fact – four wins, four draws, four defeats. That's as good as it gets for Fulham right now – and that's despite the fact that his yellow card rate swings wildly against them.

Attwell averages over two yellow cards to Fulham players per game, while averaging under one per game for their opponents.

Southampton could have Will Smallbone 2.0 in 18 y/o magician

Southampton have earned a reputation for being able to produce an almost-constant stream of excellent young talent through their academy system over the years.

Who are Southampton's most valuable academy graduates?

Whether they made the breakthrough at first-team level for the Saints or not, a number of top players in Europe started their careers within the youth set-up on the south coast.

Jamal Musiala

£94m

Ben White

£47m

Luke Shaw

£36m

James Ward-Prowse

£32.5m

Tyrone Mings

£18.8m

Valuations per Transfermarkt

The likes of White, Musiala, and Mings eventually made their names elsewhere, but Ward-Prowse and Shaw both excelled at St. Mary's before moving on.

There are a number of talented young prospects currently on the books at Southampton and they will now be hoping to follow in the footsteps of those mentioned above, as well as the likes of Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale, who have since retired after impressive careers.

One academy player who could be a future first-team star for the Saints is U21 midfielder Kamari Doyle, who could be the next Will Smallbone to establish himself as a regular within the senior squad.

How old is Kamari Doyle?

The talented youngster only turned 18 last month and has plenty of time left on his hands to develop and grow into being a viable option for Russell Martin on a regular basis.

Southampton's head coach has already shown that he has been impressed by the brilliant teenager as he offered him a first-team appearance in the League Cup against Gillingham in August.

Southampton manager Russell Martin.

Unfortunately, the Saints lost 3-1 but Doyle's promising cameo off the bench in the second-half was enough to suggest that there is the potential there for him to make an impact at senior level in the future.

The 18-year-old ace created two chances, provided one assist, and completed 88% of his attempted passes, which included two of his three long passes, in just 45 minutes of action, as per Sofascore.

This was his second first-team appearance for the club after Ruben Selles handed him 14 minutes off the bench in a 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League at the end of last season, in which time the then-17-year-old completed 100% of his five attempted passes.

How has Doyle performed at youth level?

The versatile dynamo has emerged as a possible future star for the Saints due to his phenomenal form for the club's U18 and U21 sides in recent seasons.

Doyle eased through matches at U18 level as he racked up an outstanding 19 goals and nine assists in 32 matches at that age bracket, which includes 15 goals in 24 U18 Premier League clashes.

This led to the attacking midfielder, who can also play in central midfield or on either flank, being promoted to the U21 squad, where he has been able to thrive ever since.

To date, Doyle has scored seven goals and provided 13 assists in 35 U21 games for Southampton's academy. The England U19 international has registered two assists in two Premier League 2 outings so far this season, to go along with his one assist in one League Cup clash.

These statistics suggest that the English magician, who has produced ten assists in ten career games as a right winger, is capable of contributing with goals and assists on a regular basis from a midfield or wide position.

He has also showcased his ability to be a threat from set-pieces with a stunning free-kick against Preston North End in the FA Youth Cup, as shown in the clip above.

The left-footed whiz put pen to paper on a professional contract in 2022 and academy director Matt Hale described him as an "excellent" talent who the club believe has a "bright" future ahead of him.

It is now up to him to prove to Martin that he has what it takes to deliver for the first-team week-in-week-out, in the same way that Smallbone did during pre-season.

How did Will Smallbone perform last season?

The Southampton academy graduate moved away from St. Mary's to gain valuable experience on loan with Stoke City in the Championship last term.

Smallbone averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.00 across 43 league matches for the Potters as the central midfielder displayed his ability to make an impact on and off the ball from the middle of the park.

In possession, the Ireland international showed off his creative quality with 1.6 key passes per game and seven 'big chances' created in total for his teammates, which led to five assists to go along with his three goals, as per Sofascore.

Former Stoke loanee Will Smallbone.

He then used his spell with Stoke to improve and hone his skills, which allowed him to catch Martin's eye in pre-season and the talented ace has been an impressive performer so far this season.

Smallbone has averaged a fantastic Sofascore rating of 7.47 across three Championship outings for the Saints, which is the highest rating of any current player at the club and shows that he has been one of the team's outstanding performers.

The 23-year-old maestro has created a phenomenal 3.7 chances per game for Martin's side so far, which is 0.9 more per game than any of his teammates.

What's next for Doyle?

Doyle must now use Smallbone as a prime example of the benefits of a loan spell away from the club and how it can set you up for future success at St. Mary's.

Another four months or so of development football and, potentially, the odd first-team appearance could prepare the 18-year-old ace for a loan move during the January transfer window to give him regular minutes in the second-half of the campaign.

This could then provide him with an opportunity to showcase his attacking quality in a senior environment, whether that is with another Championship team or further down the Football League, and Martin can then reassess where he is next summer.

Doyle could go out on loan to, for example, a League One team and replicate his academy form, which could then open the door for him to be given a chance to fight for a place in the Scottish head coach's first-team group for the 2024/25 campaign.

AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Head-to-head record, key stats & more

Following the conclusion of the international break, attentions can now turn back to Premier League football.

AFC Bournemouth drew 1-1 with West Ham United on the opening day of the season and now they have another London team visiting Dean Court. Chelsea are the side in question and they went into the international break off the back of an underwhelming 1-0 defeat to Steve Cooper’s Nottingham Forest.

Neither of these teams have come flying out of the blocks this season with Chelsea in 12th and AFC Bournemouth in 16th ahead of this clash. Both will be keen to turn their fortunes around with a huge win here, with the match set to take place on Sunday 17th September at 2:00PM (GMT).

We at FootballFanCast have taken a deep dive into the history of this fixture, revealing all the key statistics that you need to know!

AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Who has the better head-to-head record?

AFC Bournemouth and Chelsea have spent many years in different divisions and so this hasn’t been a common fixture until very recently.

Now that the Cherries are a regular in and around the Premier League, they have faced Chelsea more often. They have enjoyed a few historic wins but in general, it is the two-time Champions League winners who have prevailed in this fixture.

Chelsea wins 12

AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Who has more wins at Dean Court?

Interestingly, less than half of Bournemouth’s wins in this fixture have come on home soil and they have a worse record at Dean Court in fact.

Dean Court has been the home of Bournemouth since 1910 but for many years, they were actually called Boscombe FC. It was as recently as 1971 that this change of name took place and it has somewhat coincided with their rise up the leagues.

AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Who has more wins at Stamford Bridge?

When Bournemouth and Chelsea cross paths at Stamford Bridge, it never ends in a draw. Chelsea may have more wins at home than away in this fixture but the same goes for their southern counterparts.

Stamford Bridge has been the home of Chelsea since their inception in 1905 and whilst it does share its name with a 1066 battle that took place in Yorkshire, there is no correlation there whatsoever.

AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Who has the better cup record?

These two teams have never crossed paths in the FA Cup with all of their cup meetings coming in the League Cup instead. They may have faced off four times in that competition but one of those was a two-legged affair and so they are very rarely drawn against each other.

Chelsea won both legs 1-0 in the aforementioned tie whilst they also won by the same margin in the two more recent games, the pair meeting in back-to-back quarter-finals only for the Blues to continue dominating.

AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: How have the last 5 meetings played out?

Chelsea's Conor Gallagher

AFC Bournemouth got their first taste of Premier League action in the 2015/16 season and so a large majority of the games played between this duo have come in the last decade or so.

Chelsea have of course been a top-flight mainstay during this period as well and of course have the edge against Bournemouth, whether it be a league game or a cup game.

6th May 2023- AFC Bournemouth 1-3 Chelsea:

The most recent meeting between these two teams was something of a dead rubber towards the tail end of last season. Bournemouth were 9 points clear of the drop zone with four games remaining and so were nigh on guaranteed another year of Premier League football. Chelsea meanwhile were wallowing down in 12th with nothing more than a top-half finish still to play for.

It was 1-1 at the break at the Vitality after goals from Conor Gallagher and Matias Vina in the first 45. Benoit Badiashile and Joao Felix popped up with late strikes to secure yet another Chelsea win against Bournemouth but as previously mentioned, there was little more than bragging rights on the line.

27th December 2022- Chelsea 2-0 AFC Bournemouth:

Both teams were in similar league positions ahead of the reverse fixture that took place in the hectic Christmas period.

The goal scorer and the assister from Chelsea’s Champions League final victory over Manchester City found the back of the net in a 2-0 victory in the form of Kai Havertz and Mason Mount, neither of whom are still on the books at the Bridge.

29th February 2020- AFC Bournemouth 2-2 Chelsea:

There was a break of a few years as AFC Bournemouth attempted to navigate the Championship under Jason Tindall and then Scott Parker.

Travelling back to 2020 though and Bournemouth were in need of points if they were to avoid relegation. Quickfire goals from Jefferson Lerma and Josh King aided their fightback against Chelsea only for Marcos Alonso to score his second of the game at the death, turning a huge three points into a lowly one on the south coast.

14th December 2019- Chelsea 0-1 AFC Bournemouth:

In general, this was a good season for the Cherries when crossing paths with Frank Lampard’s side as they came out on top in West London.

EFL journeyman Dan Gosling scored the only goal of the game in the dying embers which moved his side up a couple spots in the buildup to Christmas.

30th January 2019- AFC Bournemouth 4-0 Chelsea:

AFC Bournemouth’s biggest winning margin in this fixture is actually more convincing than that of Chelsea, and it came in front of their home fans.

Norwegian forward Josh King starred as he contributed two goals and an assist to the Bournemouth cause against a Chelsea side that boasted names such as Eden Hazard, N’Golo Kante and Antonio Rudiger.

Who has played for both AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea?

Dominic Solanke scores in Bournemouth's away victory against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Gary Cahill (Chelsea 2012-2019; AFC Bournemouth 2021-2022)

The trend that will appear here regarding players to have played for both clubs is that it all starts in the capital.

Gary Cahill was a stalwart of Chelsea’s defence for the best part of a decade after joining from Bolton Wanderers. As he entered the latter years of his career, he went to Crystal Palace and then to AFC Bournemouth for a single season, after which he hung up his boots.

Nathan Ake (Chelsea 2012-2017; AFC Bournemouth 2016-2020)

Another defender to enjoy great success in the Premier League is Nathan Ake, but this didn’t happen in the blue of Chelsea.

The Dutchman was one of many academy players to be highly rated with the Blues but after just 7 Premier League appearances and a few loan moves, he ended up at Dean Court. One of those loan spells was actually to Bournemouth hence the crossover in the years and after impressing there, the club took him on permanently. At 28, Ake is now excelling under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and his move to the Etihad remains the biggest sale in Bournemouth’s history.

Dominic Solanke (Chelsea 2014-2017; AFC Bournemouth 2019-current)

Finally to a player who will be on the field in this upcoming clash all being well, Dominic Solanke.

Like with Ake, Solanke never really got a fair crack of the whip at Stamford Bridge and so headed for Anfield. It didn’t work out with Liverpool either but after a lot of criticism and a couple of prolific years in the Championship, Solanke has proven to be a very adept goal scorer in the Premier League.

What is AFC Bournemouth’s biggest victory over Chelsea?

30th January 2019: AFC Bournemouth 4-0 Chelsea

As previously mentioned, Bournemouth’s biggest win in this fixture came just a few years ago as they put four unanswered goals past Chelsea’s Kepa Arrizabalaga, now of Real Madrid.

That season, Bournemouth actually notched four times on four separate occasions. They did so against Leicester City and Watford whilst reaching five away at Brighton and Hove Albion.

What is Chelsea’s biggest victory over AFC Bournemouth?

3rd April 2016: AFC Bournemouth 1-4 Chelsea

Chelsea also managed four goals in their most convincing victory in this fixture but the Cherries were able to get on the score sheet in front of their home crowd.

Again, both sides were set to be resigned to mid-table in Leicester City’s title-winning year with this certainly being an off-year for the Blues, but that didn’t prevent them from dismantling AFC Bournemouth. Eden Hazard curled home twice despite this being a poor year for the Belgian and Cesc Fabregas was on hand to contribute a hat-trick of assists.

AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Key stats

  • This will be the 13th league meeting between the two clubs in the Premier League era
  • AFC Bournemouth haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last 5 matches
  • Chelsea have won the three previous meetings with AFC Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth vs Chelsea: Famous fixtures

Chelsea's Eden Hazard

26th December 2016- Chelsea 3-0 AFC Bournemouth:

The first of two famous fixtures between AFC Bournemouth and Chelsea stands out as the latter were on their way to a fifth Premier League title and a sixth in the history of the top-flight.

Pedro netted a brace for Antonio Conte’s side whilst Hazard scored from the penalty spot.

19th December 2018- Chelsea 1-0 AFC Bournemouth:

Talking of Chelsea winning silverware and that comes to the fore for the second famous fixture as well. 364 days apart, these two sides met at the same stage of the League Cup and one match was more significant than the other.

Who else but Eden Hazard scored the only goal of the game at Stamford Bridge in the quarter-finals of a competition that Chelsea would go on to win, beating Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final and then Manchester City at Wembley.

Newcastle: Toon star with fewer touches than Pope was awful vs Milan

Some will nod their heads in satisfaction; few will wax lyrical about Newcastle United's performance on their return to Champions League football.

Having travelled to the San Siro for a much-anticipated tie to kickstart the Magpies' European campaign, Eddie Howe's side dug in deep to rebuff an AC Milan onslaught, thanks to a Nick Pope masterclass between the sticks – hailed as the "great wall of San Siro" by the Chronicle's Lee Ryder – and finishing with a goalless draw.

While a point away from home is not a bad way to start a Champions League group phase consisting of Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund alongside I Rossoneri, it's "still not clicking on the whole", as journalist Craig Hope would put it.

Indeed, Newcastle started the Premier League season with aplomb after finishing fourth last term, dismantling Aston Villa 5-1 at St. James' Park, but then swallowed three successive defeats against Manchester City, Liverpool, Brighton & Hove Albion, before securing a slender victory over Brentford last time out.

Against Milan, the Magpies can take solace in their resilience and workrate against a Serie A side who threatened throughout but failed to dominate in their historic home stadium, despite taking 25 shots to Newcastle's six.

The contest marked the return to his Italian homeland for playmaking midfielder Sandro Tonali, who joined Newcastle in a £55m transfer from, as fate would have it, AC Milan in July.

How did Tonali play against AC Milan?

The midfielder hasn't quite hit the ground running despite bagging on his debut against the Villans, and against his former outfit, he was culpable of a meek display, completing just seven of his ten passes and winning only one of his six duels.

Withdrawn after 72 minutes, Hope also noted that the 23-year-old was "struggling to impact" upon his return to his old stomping ground, having also failed to make a key pass and squandered possession nine times, despite having just 20 touches of the football.

While Tonali did struggle, it was striker Alexander Isak who cut the bleakest figure on a miserable night for the Swedish striker, having failed to make an impact or even affect the game with any shred of positivity.

How did Alexander Isak perform vs AC Milan?

Isak, also aged 23, did not enjoy his most fruitful fortunes for Howe's side up front, with presenter Kev Lawson remarking that the ace looked "knackered" and needed "hooking" during the game. Such a statement is a worry considering he didn't even play last weekend.

Isak did enjoy more of the ball than his Italian teammate, taking 34 touches and actually completing 18 of his 20 passes at a completion rate of 90%.

He failed to do much with it though, succeeding with just one of his five dribble attempts and failing to unleash a single shot on Mike Maignan's goal, ineffective and seeing his threat negated – in isolation, adrift from his peers.

Ryder was particularly scathing in his post-match player ratings, branding Isak with a lowly 6/10 and writing: 'A spectator at times and lost the ball cheaply. Didn't manage a shot.'

Capping off his post-match thoughts, Howe mused that "it could be a vital point, who knows?", having avoided defeat on their return to the big time.

Perhaps. And there were certainly encouraging signs for the Tyneside club, but their star signings in Isak and Tonali will need to click into gear with a bit more inspiration if they are to advance from the 'group of death' of this year's edition of Europe's pre-eminent club competition.

Spurs failed to sign "generational" star for £450k, now he’s worth £130m

In football, the success of a side is so often attributed to a club's proficiency in the transfer market. With Tottenham Hotspur, such a notion is no different.

The Lilywhites have been chasing elusive silverware for years now to no avail, with their persistence with regard to big-money signings admirable, but ultimately costly.

Such an innate focus on one sole objective has arguably muddled the core beliefs of this fine institution, and somewhere along the way they have lost what made them great. Mauricio Pochettino marked a fine example of taking great strides back towards where they will feel they belong, but impatience and once again that desire for silverware saw Daniel Levy dismiss the Argentine, thus kickstarting the torrid period that would follow.

Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte all failed to provide what their chairman sought, and now the task falls onto Ange Postecoglou, with far less pressure following those last few torturous years.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Whilst these dreadful appointments all mark some of the worst decisions in the club's history, it could be argued that just before their arrival they made one which they are set to forever regret.

After all, Kylian Mbappe is already on the path towards immortality with both club and country, and yet there is a reality where he could have been a Spurs player. Those managerial missteps certainly marked blunders, but in failing to sign the legendary forward, the club will now be forced to watch his rise with gritted teeth.

Did Spurs nearly sign Kylian Mbappe?

Whilst The Athletic sought to outline the many failed transfer sagas across the Lilywhites' illustrious history, few stand out more than the 24-year-old Paris Saint-Germain monster who has been tearing it up ever since breaking through with AS Monaco.

In fact, the opportunity that the north London outfit had to bring him to White Hart Lane actually appeared before he enjoyed his true standout year, as a scouting mission began after they faced the French outfit in the Europa League.

Despite enjoying an emphatic victory over the Red and Whites, in which Erik Lamela's first-half hat-trick secured their 4-1 victory, it was a 16-year-old Mbappe who emerged from the bench to capture the eye, registering an assist for the visitors' only goal of the game.

Pochettino clearly took note, and years before the two would link up at the Parc Des Princes, interest in the striker had been piqued.

However, as The Athletic continued to note, despite the fact the Lilywhites scouted him, it reportedly became obvious that he was out of their reach. European powerhouses like Real Madrid had already begun sniffing around, and with Spurs yet to reach that point, they could barely compete. What makes this saga even more frustrating is that had he chosen against signing a professional contract in Monaco, the 71-cap superstar would have become available for just £450k in compensation.

In the end, his desire to remain in his homeland ruled above all, and the English outfit have since been left to watch his blistering progress from afar. Had they just pushed harder at the time, perhaps that rapid success earned by the Frenchman might have been enjoyed in north London instead, certainly spearheading a push towards the elite honours Levy seeks.

How many goals has Kylian Mbappe scored?

Everyone knows where the story went following that fateful failed transfer venture, with Mbappe enjoying his breakout year with the Monaco outfit before moving to the French capital in a mouth-watering deal worth £166m.

Although few transfer fees of this ilk can ever be value for money, the return they have enjoyed has certainly been close.

After all, with a tally of 220 goals and 98 assists across his 267 games with the outfit, the 2022 claims of Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti certainly ring true: "Mbappe is the best player in European football. Mbappe is unstoppable."

Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe.

However, such form was not reserved solely for his club, with that greatness transferring into the international scene too. Already the young forward boasts a World Cup to his name, having scored five in Russia including a strike in the final to win the ultimate competition.

Then, as if his accomplishments could not reach greater heights, he would register ten goal contributions in just seven games at the recent 2022 World Cup, including an unprecedented hat trick in the final, where they would eventually lose on penalties.

There are few like him on the planet, and alongside Erling Haaland, the two are expected to dominate world football for at least the next decade. During that mesmeric run back in November, Statman Dave would rush to brand him "generational". It's fair to say that such a statement has been justified.

To have had this kind of trophy-winning determination wrapped in the body of a goalscoring machine in north London would certainly have proven pivotal in turning the tide when it comes to avoiding silverware.

Given the funds Levy has ploughed into managers and players to achieve such a feat, perhaps had he focused more on Mbappe back in 2015 he could have expunged all those meaningless fees, given how the PSG superstar continues to take sides on his back and lead them to glory.

How much is Kylian Mbappe worth now?

In an effort to further emphasise the growth of the 5 foot 10 speedster, it is also worth noting the growth in valuation since that £450k blunder made nearly a decade ago.

After all, it is fair to say that the figure bestowed upon him has grown since that period in his early career, given he now boasts a trophy cabinet adorned with some of the game's finest trophies, as well as a host of personal accolades too.

CIES Football Observatory seeks to hand him a befitting value, which aligns with his complicated and ever-changing contractual situation too.

As such, they suggest that the France international is worth a huge €150m (£130m), marking a 28,788% rise from that compensation fee Levy could have potentially paid.

Not only this, but in an effort to showcase their financial power and the pull they now hold, Saudi Arabian outfit Al Hilal even made a world record bid of €300m (£259m) in the summer, which was subsequently rejected. This only serves to emphasise Spurs' failure, as one of the greatest ever 'what could have been' stories.
