The ACB said Younis will join the team in Pakistan for a conditioning camp ahead of the Champions Trophy, and stay on for the duration of the tournament

Younis had worked with Afghanistan in 2022, at a 15-day training camp in Abu Dhabi with an expanded squad of 25.The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said in a statement that Younis will join the team in Pakistan for a conditioning camp ahead of the Champions Trophy, which is set to begin on February 19 in Karachi, and stay with the team till the end of the tournament.This is the third global tournament in a row where the ACB has appointed a mentor for the team from the host country: they had Ajay Jadeja as mentor for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, and Dwayne Bravo as bowling consultant for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA. In the first of those, they finished sixth – with wins against England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and a near-upset of Australia – to seal automatic qualification for the Champions Trophy. It was not so long ago that Kane Williamson was carrying this batting line-up. Seems Rachin Ravindra wants that responsibility now.He didn’t mind slotting into an unfamiliar position. He didn’t flinch having to come out at 15 for 2. He didn’t stop smiling when he brought up his hundred, an innings that confirmed not just his team’s spot in the semi-finals but also India’s. This was a game that Najmul Hossain Shanto’s team had to win to stay alive. But they batted like that was just too much trouble. Bangladesh started at nearly a run a ball. But ten of the next 15 overs went for three runs or fewer. Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah fell from the pressure created in this period. A combined 511 matches’ worth of experience was only good for 6 runs in a do-or-die game. Their wickets left Shanto with no way forward. He kept having to readjust to a new partner, to a new match situation, and in the end, produced a staccato innings of 77 off 110. He could have done better. The others should have done better.Taskin Ahmed and Nahid Rana raised Bangladesh’s hopes with a fiery opening spell, rattling Will Young’s stumps in the first over and snaring Williamson for a rare single-digit score. The infield was richly populated at that point. The whole atmosphere was buzzing, the crowd also getting in the act. Into this walked Ravindra. One of the best things about his batting is his touch. It’s so pure. Down at No. 4 – he was brought into the XI to replace an ill Daryl Mitchell – there was possibly a risk that he wouldn’t be able to take full toll. But as luck would have it, he began his innings within the field restrictions and that meant he could profit from his timing. His first five fours were all about finding the gaps because his timing always took care of the rest.Ravindra had to wait 11 overs since the field spread to find his next boundary but that didn’t mean he was stagnant. His first 23 runs came off 21 balls with five fours. His next 28 runs came off 29 balls with one four. There was one chance in between all that. A mix-up with his Wellington team-mate Devon Conway could have resulted in him being run-out had Tanzid Hasan been able to get a direct hit in the 12th over.

Bangladesh weren’t able to take their chances. New Zealand did. Williamson did have a hand in proceedings here, picking up smart catches at short midwicket and cover. Michael Bracewell, after wrapping up an uninterrupted ten-over spell, ran 30 yards to his right to pick up a diving catch that probably wasn’t even his. But he decided to take charge and it worked.Bangladesh also weren’t able to rotate strike. New Zealand could. Those were the biggest points of difference between the two teams. The pitch did become much better for batting under lights, though, a fact Mitchell Santner was looking forward to when he won the toss and decided to chase and of all people, Bracewell was his ace in the hole with the ball. The 34-year-old offspin-bowling allrounder himself couldn’t believe he had taken 4 for 26. In the mid-match interview, he said, “Funny one, once you let go [of the ball] you don’t have much control what happens at the other end.”Bracewell contributed 43 of 178 dot balls that plagued Bangladesh. You have to go back to 2012 to find an innings they had paced quite so poorly. Rotating strike was a struggle and the avenues they chose to get out of that weren’t ideal. Perhaps the pitch was too slow in the afternoon to be able to work the ball into gaps. Mushfiqur made a play against Bracewell but he couldn’t clear the long boundary with his slog sweep. Bangladesh were 106 for 4 in the 23rd over. At a time when consolidation was actually needed, Mahmudullah made an ill-advised trip down the track and skewed a leading edge to cover.

Bracewell contributed to his success by slowing his pace down. Bangladesh contributed considerably more. They exit the tournament having faced more than 50 overs of dot balls. Their decision-making left them so short on batting resources that they had Taskin on strike for the 45th over and it ended up as a maiden. The death overs were a total flex for the Black Caps. At one point, they were more than happy with just three fielders on the boundary, instead of the five allowed.Bangladesh were reminded what could have been towards the end of the chase when there was sharp turn, leading edges, low bounce and even a direct-hit run-out. The wicket merely added to their regret at the one that got away – Ravindra was 26 when Tanzid missed – and the runs that got away – 260 would have made this game so much more competitive.As it happened, New Zealand went into the chase knowing all they needed were a couple of partnerships and they got those. Ravindra put on 57 runs with Conway and then 129 with Tom Latham, who is so good as a crisis manager. Sai Kishore, meanwhile, hasn’t recovered from the finger injury which forced him to miss the pre-season Buchi Babu tournament in Chennai. He hurt his finger while intercepting a M Shahrukh Khan drive in his follow-through during a first-division club match in Chennai.Ankit, 34, had the second-highest wickets for Puducherry in the 2024-25 Ranji season: 24 from seven matches at 28.95. He also scored 216 runs at 24.00. Southampton supporters have been pretty satisfied in the last few days after seeing their side extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to three games on Tuesday.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men went into their encounter with fellow strugglers Crystal Palace off the back of beating Leicester City and Everton in their preceding two matches, results which moved the Saints out of the division’s bottom three. Yet the South Coast outfit were unable to keep their winning streak going in only drawing 1-1 with Roy Hodgson’s side, with James Ward-Prowse’s effort cancelling out Wilfried Zaha’s opener to earn the hosts a share of the spoils.

Thus, there have been many satisfied Southampton fans up and down the country in recent times, although several may well be looking back at the January transfer window with an element of disappointment, what with the club unable to land a replacement for right back Cedric Soares.

The Portugal international made the move to Italian giants Inter Milan during the January window, thus leaving the Saints somewhat short of cover in that area of the field, only for manager Hasenhuttl to fail to bring a replacement to St Mary’s.

And failing to solve that glaring problem, given it now leaves the vastly inexperienced Yan Valery as the main option in that department, could seriously cost Southampton as they battle to avoid Premier League relegation.

Ultimately, while Cedric wasn’t quite as effective down the Saints right-hand-side during his final 12 months at the club, the Portuguese ace had proven to be a solid and relatively dependable option at right back – after all, he was a regular under Ronald Koeman, Claude Puel, Mauricio Pellegrino, and indeed Mark Hughes.

And with over 100 Premier League appearances to his name during his time on the South Coast, the 27-year-old seemed to represent the ideal player and professional needed to aid the club in their battle against relegation – going through it last season may have also rubbed off on this Southampton team.

Significantly though, his departure to the Italian giants has left the Saints short of options in that area of the field, as while Valery has been the main man at right back since Hasenhuttl’s appointment, his inexperience, alongside the lack of genuine alternatives, represents a huge gamble made by the Southampton manager.

Yes, 19-year-old has done reasonably well since coming into the team at the start of December, but his red card in their victory over Leicester City was an indication that relying on the young defender could prove problematic as the season wears on – ultimately, being the main man in that position brings with it a lot of pressure.

And that is why failing to land a replacement for Cedric appears to be something of a mistake from Hasenhuttl, as while he may not have felt the 27-year-old was the right man for his team, his exit has left his side short in that area of the field – and placing all the emphasis on 19-year-old Valery is certainly a risk.

As such, failing to solve that glaring issue he has in the right back department could prove very costly to the Saints as the season progresses.

Little did anyone know the spectacle Manchester City would produce on Sunday, as their 6-0 thrashing of Chelsea was the most unexpected. However, something that’s becoming a routine thing is Ilkay Gundogan making an impact, as he did by scoring a wonderful goal and bossing the midfield for the hosts.

It’s not the first time Gundogan has allowed City to gain control of big matches this season. He’s been a pivotal part of City’s system this time and been on glowing form since December. While his four assists against Rotherham United in the FA Cup got him in the history books, Gundogan’s discreet brilliance is often realized at the big stages.

The clever central midfielder made quite the impact against Manchester United earlier this season, scoring a clever goal after returning from injury. Earlier this month against Arsenal, he proved his ability as a defensive midfielder by covering for Fernandinho and keeping control of the midfield battle.

Against Chelsea, he was given more freedom to roam forward. He thrived on the vulnerability of Chelsea’s midfield, recording an amazing 97% passing accuracy (via WhoScored) and creating two big chances along with his goal. A player with a lot of hidden talent ravaged by injuries, Gundogan finally looks to be back to his best.

With crucial games ahead away to Manchester United and home to Tottenham, amidst the Champions League clashes, Guardiola will rely on the witty German to keep discreetly producing the goods to help City dominate on the biggest occasions.

It’s been a long time coming but the former Borussia Dortmund man is starting to show why Guardiola made him one of his first signings at the Etihad.

Crystal Palace progressed into the sixth round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win over League One outfit Doncaster Rovers at the Keepmoat Stadium on Sunday, with first-half goals from Jeffrey Schlupp and Max Meyer enough to see the Eagles through.

It was not for the want of trying for the hosts as they gave as good as they got in the 90 minutes although, ultimately, the Premier League side’s quality proved too much for Rovers in the end and so their Wembley hopes died.

After getting just one point from their league clash with West Ham last time out – which they arguably deserved to take more from – Roy Hodgson made six changes to his Palace side, with a different-looking backline and strike-force, while Wayne Hennessey returned between the sticks.

Luka Milivojevic kept his place in the starting XI and was the engine in the south London outfit’s uncharacteristically attacking midfield.

Hodgson rarely opts to start Meyer, and Schlupp’s four goals this season show he has a penchant for getting forward – usually workhorse James McArthur plays alongside Milivojevic but the Scotsman was benched – and so, with Doncaster largely dominating the tie, it was clear that Palace were missing some bite in midfield.

Captain Milivojevic was immense regardless and was deservedly voted man of the match for his efforts. Here’s how the Selhurst Park faithful reacted to the 27-year-old’s performance…

Manchester United look like they’ve found a manager in Ole Gunnar Solskjær who understands the club’s core principals and values, and they should be throwing a contract and transfer money at him as soon as possible.

Former coach Jose Mourinho managed a couple of decent signings during his time at the club, including the likes of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Diogo Dalot, but saw his finances famously limited towards the end when he was in pursuit of a much-needed defender.

The less we say about the likes of Fred and Alexis Sanchez the better, we’re sure.

Now with Ole Gunnar Solskjær in charge the board must back him in the market if they want their club to have a successful campaign next time around.

That means calculated marquee signings to match those of close rivals Liverpool and Manchester City.

So, who could be that man?

According to the Mirror, Borussia Dortmund wonderkid Jadon Sancho is top of the priority list for a small sum of £100m+.

The former Manchester City player, who was signed by current Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund in 2017 for a relatively small fee of £8m (espn.co.uk), has developed into one of the finest young talents in world football under his new club’s guidance and has quite rightfully earned the attention of one the famous institutions in the world.

Sancho has contributed a very admirable 8 goals and 13 assists in 30 games so far this season and made his breakthrough into the England setup securing three caps for the senior side.

It’s hard to ignore the fact that Sancho would be a very suitable replacement for some of the slower and less technically gifted players in the United side. His attributes would be ideal for the direction Manchester United are currently heading in under Solskjær, and, having never been given a chance to express himself in the English top-flight, would certainly have a point to prove against his former employers.

Surely the man to win United’s first title since Sir Alex Ferguson departed.
