The legspinner Fawad Ahmed appears likely to join Australia’s Ashes campaign after being rushed into the Australia A squad for the remainder of its tour of England and Ireland. On Wednesday night, legislation was passed by the parliament’s House of Representatives which cleared the way for Ahmed’s Australian citizenship to be fast-tracked and although the bill must still be approved by the Senate, that appears to be a formality. That should mean Ahmed can obtain an Australian passport well in advance of the first Ashes Test, which starts at Trent Bridge on July 10. The Australia A matches against Ireland from June 14 to 17 and Gloucestershire from June 21 to 23 now loom as a genuine Ashes audition for Ahmed, who will join the incumbent Test spinner Nathan Lyon and the promising young left-armer Ashton Agar as the slow bowlers in the Australia A outfit.”It is a dream come true, after a long struggle and being through a really tough time,” Ahmed said in Melbourne on Thursday. “I am very happy now and it is a great opportunity for me to prove myself at that level … It’s an opportunity for me to give something to this country because this nation has given me a lot. They loved me, give me an honour and give me respect. This is now the time that I can give back to them and serve my nation.”The selectors had originally planned to send Ahmed on the Australia A tour of South Africa in July but that was when they thought he would be ineligible for a national call-up until the final Ashes Test. The expected passing of the parliamentary bill, which eases the residency requirements for certain individuals in exceptional circumstances where their becoming a citizen could benefit Australia, has encouraged the selectors to give Ahmed some time in England ahead of the Ashes.Under the ICC’s player eligibility criteria, Ahmed would be unavailable for Australian selection until August 18 unless granted a passport before then. The criteria do not apply to A-teams. When Australia’s selectors named their Ashes squad in April they chose 16 players and left one further space unfilled, which at the time was seen as an indication that Ahmed would come under consideration if he became eligible.”We are pleased to be able to provide emerging cricketers with an opportunity to show their abilities,” John Inverarity, the national selector, said. “Fawad is a spin bowler of interest and we look forward to seeing how he performs for Australia A.”Ahmed, 31, played ten first-class matches in Pakistan before fleeing to Australia in 2010 as an asylum seeker, saying his life had been threatened in Pakistan. Initially his claim was rejected but after Cricket Australia weighed in to support him, Ahmed was granted permanent residency last year and subsequently made his Melbourne Renegades debut in the Big Bash League and earned a call-up to the Victoria state side in February.”It’s just like a dream with open eyes, because I never expected something like this to happen after three and a half years,” Ahmed said of progressing to Australia A selection. “There was a question on my life [in Pakistan], there were people raising their fingers on my life, so I was just surviving. I just came here for a better life, and I was just thinking to survive here and be like other people who came here as immigrants. This is something amazing, it is like a dream. Even I couldn’t imagine this. This is something unbelievable for me.”In three Sheffield Shield matches towards the end of the summer, Ahmed collected 16 wickets at 28.37 and impressed his state captain Cameron White so much that White declared Ahmed “one of the better legspinners – if not the best – I’ve seen in first-class cricket outside [Stuart] MacGill and [Shane] Warne.”

Mathew Sinclair announces his retirement

Mathew Sinclair, the Central Districts batsman who played 33 Tests for New Zealand, has announced his retirement from all cricket. Sinclair, 37, has been a fixture in the Central Districts side for 18 seasons and is the team’s all-time highest run-scorer, with more than 15,000 runs across all formats, and he remained a solid performer last summer, with 646 Plunket Shield runs at 40.37.He burst on to the Test cricket scene with 214 on debut against West Indies in Wellington in 1999-2000, still the highest score by a New Zealand Test debutant and the equal third-highest from all countries. However, despite posting another Test double-century against Pakistan less than two years later, Sinclair struggled to find consistency at international level. His 33 Tests were spread across 11 years and his last appearance for his country came against Australia in Hamilton in early 2010, when he was recalled for the first time in two years. Sinclair also played 54 one-day internationals and two Twenty20 internationals, as well as helping Central Districts win eight domestic trophies.”Having taken a few months since the end of last season to consider my options I have decided that the timing is right to call time on my playing career,” Sinclair said. “I have two young children and a wife who I want to spend more time with and the constant travel that the Stags endure each year makes that pretty tough.”I am also at the stage where I want to get into a career outside of cricket and unless you are in a position to totally devote yourself, it’s difficult to get the opportunities that I am after. There are some really talented younger batsmen coming through for CD, so I feel it’s the right time from the team’s perspective as well.”Central Districts has been good to me and I never really considered playing for anyone else. We have always played a positive style of game, and the quality of the people in the side meant that there was always a great team spirit. My first hundred for the Stags was really special as it helped win a game and proved that I could succeed at that level.”Watching Peter Ingram beat my record for the highest individual score for the Stags, Jamie How’s double hundred in a one day game and Michael Mason’s heroics with the bat to win the Ford Trophy two seasons ago are special moments that I will also cherish.”While it would have been nice to have played more for my country, I do look back on my time in the Black Caps with a lot of pride and satisfaction. Getting 214 on debut against the West Indies was a real highlight; especially as we went on to win the Test.”Sinclair will end his career with more first-class runs for a single association – 9148 – than any other player in New Zealand, as well as a record 27 first-class centuries for Central Districts. On four occasions he was the leading run scorer in the New Zealand first-class competition, in 1998-99, 2005-06, 2008-09 and 2011-12.”It’s hard to put into words the contribution that Mathew has made to Central Districts,” Hugh Henderson, the Central Districts chief executive, said. “In years to come his run scoring records will still stand and people will look back at him as an all-time great of the domestic game in this country.”It is remarkable that in a career of such length that Mathew never really had a poor season, he just kept scoring runs. It’s unlikely there will be another player like him in our history. On behalf of Central Districts we would like to thank him wholeheartedly for his contribution to the game and our association. We wish him all the best in the next stages of his career outside of cricket.”

Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins has returned home from the A tour to South Africa to assess a lower rib/back injury. Cummins played two first-class matches on tour – including one against Zimbabwe Select in Harare – and one match of the one-day tri-series against India A.”Pat reported some left rib/back pain during the Australia A game against India A last week,” Australia A physiotherapist Kevin Sims said. “With only Wednesday’s final remaining in the series, the decision was made for him to return to Australia to assess the injury.”Cummins, 20, has had a history of injuries that have curtailed his participation for Australia in several international series. In June, he toured England with the A team after being sidelined for nine months with a back injury. He had complained of stiffness during the Champions League in South Africa in October last year, where he turned out for Sydney Sixers. He was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his back on his return home.Cummins made his international debut aged just 18 on Australia’s tour of South Africa in October 2011. His first, and to date only, Test at the Wanderers included 6 for 79 in the second innings, earning him the Man-of-the-Match award in a narrow Australian victory. He has also impressed in five ODIs, including playing England at Lord’s last year, and had a successful World T20 in Sri Lanka where he claimed six wickets at 32.83 to help Australia to the semi-final.

Sangakkara slams SLC while choosing Kandurata

Kumar Sangakkara has slammed Sri Lanka Cricket for “creating” a narrative that brought his loyalty into question, even as he confirmed he will play for Kandurata Maroons over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Champions League

Kumar Sangakkara stands to lose $140,000 by not turning out for Sunrisers Hyderabad•BCCI

Kumar Sangakkara has slammed Sri Lanka Cricket for “creating” a narrative that brought his loyalty into question, even as he confirmed he will play for Kandurata Maroons over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Champions League. He said he is ultimately happy to represent his home province, but was perturbed by the manner in which the board publicly framed his situation, which he does not believe ever entailed a question of country loyalty. Sangakkara will lose $140,000 from his IPL salary as a result of his decision.”I was quite upset that there were statements released by individuals in an official capacity, where my loyalty to the country was brought into question,” Sangakkara told ESPNcricinfo. “The statements were made to put me at a disadvantage and to make me appear in a very bad light. Certain individuals’ efforts to isolate me as a player misled the public and inflamed the issue further.”Well-placed comments have twisted this into a country versus money, which it is definitely not, because this is a franchise-based tournament where franchises play franchises. It was made out to sound like I was choosing money over country.”Sangakkara’s comments were ostensibly aimed at SLC secretary Nishantha Ranatunga, who had told ESPNcricinfo the board would prefer Kandurata’s IPL players played “for their country” in the Champions League.Sangakkara also took a dim view of the board’s professing it did not mind losing out on the $150,000 sum a foreign franchise must pay if a cricketer plays for the overseas franchise over his local qualifying team, as it did not parallel the loss he would have to incur personally.”There’s been a statement made that SLC was willing to lose $150,000 by getting me to play for Kandurata. I think the true picture is that I incurred a considerable financial loss out of my salary, and the board incurs a financial loss of $150,000 out of approximately $1.5 million that they will earn through the Champions League, via player commissions of 10% on each players’ contract, plus the half a million dollars the Champions League pays for franchise participation. I think there is little or no comparison in the amounts lost. None of the board members or anyone else loses individually, but the player suffers.”The real matter is not the financial penalty, but the issue of principle. This is not a country versus money issue, but it was created to be so, and I as a player was left alone to be caught in the middle of it.”Since I got my first contract in 2003, I haven’t taken any money to play for my club. I haven’t taken any of the prize money from the domestic championships. I haven’t taken any money to play in the provincials or any prize money. I’ve always redistributed that money either to the side, or in the case of my club, to the workers at the club, because I think as a matter of principle; because I hold a national contract, I shouldn’t charge for playing first-class cricket in Sri Lanka. “Ranatunga had first indicated the board would like Kandurata’s IPL players to represent their home province on August 17 – the same day Kandurata qualified for the Champions League – but Sangakkara said the board had not asked him to play for Kandurata until a meeting on Tuesday evening.”The first time I heard directly that they wanted me to play for Kandurata was on Tuesday – the same day I arrived from the West Indies. I was called in for a meeting and met with a few representatives from SLC. I was told that they expected me to play for Kandurata, and I said if that’s the case, and if they are informing me at such a late hour, that I’m happy for them to speak to the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise and also the Champions League, to see if that could be done in a respectful and amicable way, and I would await the outcome.”Being contacted at the last minute, and told that SLC wished me to play for Kandurata, it all seemed a bit surreal to me. At the same time, SLC failed to mediate a workable solution, so I had to make a decision on my own. I decided to stay with Kandurata and absorb the considerable financial loss.”Sangakkara said he had already inquired about a possible release from Sunrisers even before the board approached him formally. “When I qualified with Kandurata on the 17th, I contacted Sunrisers through my representative and asked them if I was not an essential member of the squad and if they were looking to release me to play for Kandurata. Without making any bones about it, they said they can’t release me because I’m going to be an integral part of the squad, even if they can’t guarantee me a spot in the first XI.”Things after that took a very different turn. A very wrong image of the choice that was to be made was presented to the public.”Sangakkara said he had spoken with Sunrisers after having made his decision, and found them to be understanding and supportive of him. “I’m very happy to represent Kandurata. I have no issue with Sunrisers Hyderabad and, at the end of the day, this is my profession – this is how I make a living. I’m pretty happy to have made the decision that I did.”He will now join the Kandurata side as they prepare for the Champions League qualifiers, which begin on September 17.
