Group AMumbai took 65 overs on the fourth day to complete a ten-wicket victory against Railways at the Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi. It was the only outright win in the first round of matches in the Elite division and Mumbai have a headstart on the competition as they picked up six points. Railways had batted with resolve on the third day to give themselves a chance of saving the match but it started to go wrong from the second ball of the final day, when Suryakumar Yadav dismissed Anureet Singh for a duck. When Shivakant Shukla, who started the day 64 not out, was dismissed by Ramesh Powar for 77, Railways were in trouble.Sanjay Bangar and Nitin Bille battled, batting out 39 overs together, but Iqbal Abdulla dismissed them in quick succession, and then got another wicket two balls after Bille was dismissed to break Railways’ resistance. Mumbai did not waste time getting rid of the tail and bowled Railways out for 244, leaving themselves just 18 to win, which they knocked off in 4.2 overs.

Rajasthan’s batsmen battled through the whole of the fourth day and hung on for a draw against Karnataka at the Field Club Ground in Udaipur. Rajasthan had got through 27 overs at the end of the third day but still had another whole day to survive, after Karnataka had managed a 368-run first-innings lead and made them follow on. The top order saw out the first two sessions but in the final one Karnataka’s seamers picked up four wickets within eight overs to set up a tense finish. Karnataka needed four wickets in just under 20 overs, but Robin Bist lasted 51 balls and wicketkeeper Rohit Jhalani stayed unbeaten off 60 balls to stave of defeat.The early work had been done by openers Vineet Saxena, who scored 99 off 283 balls, and Vaibhav Deshpande (52 off 150). After Deshpande departed 21.2 overs into the fourth day, captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar made a solid 45 off 84 and Ashok Menaria lasted 38 balls too. It was only when Saxena and Menaria fell in consecutive overs that Rajasthan began to wobble but luckily for them the lower-middle order saw things out.

In another battling performance, Punjab earned a draw against Uttar Pradesh by losing just five wickets on the final day in Mohali and wiping out the first-innings deficit. Punjab started the day on 26 for 2, still trailing by 220 runs, and managed to get to 280 for 7. They lost opener Sarul Kanwar in the fourth over of the day but Karan Goel played steadily and scored 55 off 153 balls. Mandeep Singh did not completely curb his natural attacking instincts and hit five fours and two sixes in his 79-ball 51. Unlike in Rajasthan’s case, runs mattered as much as time for Punjab as they had a chance to wipe out the deficit and avoid some awkward overs at the end of the day. Their batsmen’s contrasting approaches served them well.Mayank Sidhana came to the crease at the fall of Mandeep’s wicket and scored a crucial 76 not out off 146 balls. Punjab kept managing to string together partnerships and finally took a lead when Sidhana was batting with captain Harbhajan Singh, who scored 24 off 35. UP had to settle for three points for the first-innings lead.

Orissa and Saurashtra both took no points from their match at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack after Orissa’s first innings was left incomplete and they had not managed to pass Saurashtra’s first-innings score. Saurashtra needed six wickets at the start of the day to secure three points for a first-innings lead while Orissa needed an unlikely 300 runs to get the first-innings points. Natraj Behera converted his century into a double-hundred and Orissa’s middle and lower-middle order batted gutsily to take them to 494 for 7 in response to Saurashtra’s 545, meaning both sides are still on 0 points after the first round of matches.After Ravinra Jadeja’s triple-hundred over the first two days, Orissa had crawled along at a snail’s pace on the third day and started the final one on 246 for 4. Behera and Abhilash Mallick started at a slightly brisker pace on Sunday and Mallick was eventually dismissed for 64 off 175 balls. Saurashtra could not make use of that opening though and Paresh Patel came in and played a stodgy hand of 48 off 149 balls. Behera reached his maiden first-class double-hundred and when he was dismissed for 209 Saurashtra needed to take four wickets in just under 30 overs. Deepak Behera and Alok Sahoo resisted with an unbeaten 60-run stand.Group BFour wickets from Ashok Dinda helped Bengal bowl Gujarat out for 495 on the fourth day at Eden Gardens and secure three points for a first-innings lead. After having amassed 560 in their first innings, Bengal were given cause for worry on the third day when Gujarat played their way to 315 for 2. However, on the fourth day they picked wickets in clusters and made sure Gujarat fell 65 runs short of their first-innings score.Bengal got off to the ideal start on Sunday, with Ranadeb Bose dismissing Rikin Chauhan in the third over of the day and Dinda bowling Niraj Patel in the fourth. Gujarat did not collapse though, and Bhavik Thaker and Pratharesh Parmar both scored half-centuries and got the visitors to 430 for 4. Bengal would have been worried at that stage but Dinda gave them the breakthrough, trapping Parmar lbw and bowling Sunny Patel for a two-ball duck. Thaker was removed by Bose shortly after and there was not much more resistance from Gujarat as Dinda finished with 4 for 87.

With Haryana having already conceded the first-innings lead against Delhi at the Roshanara Club Ground in Delhi, they used the final day as batting practice and Sunny Singh helped himself to a century. Haryana started the day on 94 for 2 in their second innings and with the first-innings lead just 59 it would have taken a dramatic collapse to give Delhi any chance of an outright win. Delhi got an early wicket but Sunny Singh and Sachin Rana stitched together a 111-run stand to kill the game off. Sunny Singh scored 157 out of Haryana’s 318 for 8 in the second innings but had to retire hurt in the afternoon.

After three days of rain, there was finally some play between Tamil Nadu and Baroda at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai but it was only 12 overs before the match was called off. Baroda won the toss and reached 38 for 0. Both teams were awarded two points each since the match was affected by weather.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has formed a task force to advise the board on how to improve domestic cricket in Pakistan. The team will study and review the existing structure of domestic cricket, consider its weaknesses and strengths and will make recommendations within two months. The recommendations of the team, though, will not be binding on the PCB.The team is made up of familiar names in Pakistan administration: former Pakistan captains Javed Miandad, Intikhab Alam, Zaheer Abbas and Moin Khan, and former players Sarfraz Nawaz, Iqbal Qasim, Imtiaz Ahmed and Zakir Khan, who is director of domestic cricket in Pakistan. Alam, who has been both a coach and manager of the national side and is now both the director of international cricket for the PCB and director of academies, will be chairman of the task team. Wasim Akram, the former Pakistan captain, was also approached to be a part of the team but declined because of other commitments.Some of the members of the team have questioned why it has only been given a recommendatory role.Nawaz said the team members would use their experience to determine why Pakistan’s domestic cricket was not producing more world-class cricketers. “The board want our input and we are ready to use the best of our experience to give them that. It is their responsibility to either implement it or not,” Nawaz told ESPNcricinfo.”There is definitely some problem with our existing domestic structure that is hampering the quality of our players. We have to sit down and discuss it right from the start. All the members of the team have rich experience of playing the game. Most of the members have played ample first-class cricket in different eras and understand the structure. I think the quality is missing and that is why we are not producing world-class cricketers. So we have to sit and pen down the differences in the structure of domestic cricket over the years and look for flaws that need to be fixed to get back the quality we had on our circuit.”The structure of domestic cricket in Pakistan has seen several changes over the last six decades. The period from 2001 to now has been the most inconsistent, with changes made every two years. The present structure starts with the inter-district Under-19 tournament, then has the inter-district senior championship followed by the National Under-19 event. After that there is the Patron’s Trophy grade II and then the country’s premier first-class event the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. The format of QEA has remained intact from last season, with 22 first-class teams – both regional and departmental outfits – competing in a two-league structure. The one-day tournament is the next event, followed by the Pentangular Cup: a first-class tournament among provincial teams and sometimes featuring a combination of provincial teams and top teams from QEA – again an inconsistent format. The season ends with the Twenty20 Cup played among all the 13 regional teams.Nawaz said the returns the board were getting from domestic cricket were not equivalent to their spendings. “The PCB has invested a huge amount in domestic cricket but the output isn’t a quality one,” he said. “Most of our current players aren’t in the same class as Wasim [Akram], Javed [Miandad] or Waqar [Younis]; they end up playing a maximum of two years of international cricket. We want to produce players who can play international cricket for at least five to ten years on their own abilities.”We will be studying the structures of most of the successful playing nations and will come up with feasible and the best recommendations for domestic cricket. After that it is the PCB’s responsibility to take up our suggestions and implement them.”Iqbal Qasim, who is now head of sports for the National Bank of Pakistan, also said there were faults in Pakistan’s domestic cricket. “It’s a good sign that the board have at least realised there are flaws and the system requires evaluation,” Qasim told ESPNcricinfo. “Every member in the body has huge experience of domestic cricket and I hope the team can come up with the best recommendations that are helpful for Pakistan.”

– O Grêmio tem qualidade, e nosso time não jogou o que sabe jogar. Demos um pouco de espaço, o que não costumamos dar, e acabamos vacilando. Mas é normal jogar na casa do Grêmio, um forte candidato, e ter um resultado negativo. Agora, temos de buscar o resultado no próximo jogo. Foi um jogo muito difícil, mas ficou para trás e precisamos pensar na sequência da competição – disse Diego Souza.

بيتر بانكس كان حكم المباراة، واحتسب هدف برينتفورد التعادل أمام آرسنال، بعد العودة لتقنية الـVAR بناء على قرار لي ماسون، الذي فشل في تحديد المتسلل خلال هدف إيفان توني.

الدوري الإنجليزي أعلن في بيان رسمي أن الخطأ الذي ارتكبه طاقم حكام المباراة كان بشريًا، واعتذر من خلاله لنادي آرسنال، بعدما تسبب في فقدان الجانرز لنقطتين في صراع الصدارة.

شبكة “سكاي” البريطانية، أكدت أن رابطة الدوري الإنجليزي، بعد الاجتماع مع لجنة الحكام، اتخذت قرارًا، بغياب لي ماسون عن مباريات الجولة المقبلة، الـ24 للمسابقة، عقابًا له على ما فعله في مواجهة آرسنال وبرينتفورد.

ولم يكن هذا هو الخطأ الأول لـ ماسون، حيث ألغى هدفًا لنيوكاسل في مباراتهم أمام كريستال بالاس في 3 سبتمبر الماضي.

من جانبه، دعا هاورد ويب، رئيس لجنة الحكام برابطة الدوري الإنجليزي، إلى اجتماع مع المسؤولين لبحث إمكانية تطوير التحكيم وعودته إلى المسار الصحيح بعد الأخطاء العديدة التي تم ارتكابها خلال الأسبوعين الماضيين.

Chasing 191, WAPDA looked to have the match in hand at 113 for 1 but reckoned without Mohammad Aslam and Fahad Masood. Aslam, a left-arm spinner, removed Asif Khan for 51 to end a 113-run partnership with Ahmed Said (62) and three quick wickets followed to reduce the batting side to 129 for 5. With only 51 to get though, WAPDA were still the favourites but the bowlers kept pegging away. A sixth wicket fell on 146 and two more on 176 and 177, with Aslam and Mahood taking five of the seven wickets that had fallen till then. Suddenly, it was anyone’s game.With two wickets in hand, WAPDA battled back, taking their team to 190 and levelling the scores. But just when it looked like they would seal a thrilling win, Ayaz Tasawwar was caught off Masood for 10. Last man Zeeshan Nadir played out five balls but the fightback was completed when Aslam bowled No.10 Imran Khan for a 14-ball duck with the first ball of his 28th over. When the dust settled, WAPDA had lost their last nine wickets for 77 runs. Dean Elgar, the uncapped left-handed batsman, and seamer Rory Kleinveldt have been included in South Africa’s 14-man squad for the first two one-day internationals against Sri Lanka. The series will also be the first chance for AB de Villiers as captain after injury meant he missed the matches against Australia.Elgar, the Knights opening batsman, is the only rookie in the squad. Kleinveldt has already represented South Africa in two Twenty20 internationals, the latest one during the 2009 ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean.The squad includes three changes from the one that faced Australia at home recently. de Villiers will take over the wicketkeeping duties from Mark Boucher alongside his captaincy duties, while Elgar replaces batsman David Miller and the selectors chose to switch legspinner Imran Tahir for Kleinveldt.”We have chosen a squad of 14 for the first two games only,” Andrew Hudson, the Cricket South Africa’s selection convener, said. “Those members of the squad who are not involved in the final Test match in Newlands next week will be released to play for their franchises before the squad assembles on January 9.”There have been a number of batsmen showing good form in domestic cricket, and Elgar fully deserves his opportunity,” Hudson added. “He was the leading run-scorer in the One-Day Cup (567 runs) and also had the best average (81). In addition he gives us very useful bowling options as a left-arm spinner.”Kleinveldt played an important role with the ball in helping the Cobras to win the One-Day Cup and he also has a lot of potential as a lower-order power hitter.” Kleinveldt was the second-highest wicket-taker for the Cobras, taking 13 wickets in nine matches.With Johan Botha and Robin Peterson the two specialist spinners in the side, Hudson said the committee didn’t feel the need to include Tahir, even though he adds variety with his legspin.”We feel we won’t need three frontline spinners in South African conditions, so it makes sense to change the bowling balance of the squad slightly,” Hudson said.The first match starts on January 11 at Boland Park, Paarl.
