'Happy with my fitness' – Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir, the India opening batsman, has said he is happy with his fitness and the next step in his recovery from injury is putting bat to ball again. Gambhir missed the third Test against Sri Lanka earlier this year and the second Test against Australia because of knee problems. He has been named in the side that will take on New Zealand in a three-Test series starting November 4 in Ahmedabad.”It’s important to get back into the rhythm,” Gambhir told the in an interview. “I have increased my batting time at the nets and am happy with my fitness.”Gambhir said it was very frustrating to sit and home and watch India playing. “I watched every bit of the Visakhapatnam game [against Australia] and I missed being part of the team. To be honest, missing out on a game after being dropped feels bad but to sit out with injury and watch other people play feels even worse.”Gambhir chose to rest his knee in the light of the upcoming assignments – the potentially tough tour to South Africa and the World Cup. He has also spent a lot of time at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, undergoing rehabilitation. The biggest challenge, according to him, will be starting from scratch after the layoff. “When you go out to bat in a match after a long break, you just try to test if you still have the old touch. When you come back from a break, you need time to get used to things around you. If you look, I haven’t played much in the last three months. It’s a challenge that I am now looking forward to meet.”Gambhir believed he had done enough to merit a place in the side for the 2011 World Cup that will be hosted in the subcontinent, but was quick to add that the other series were equally important. “It is not just about playing the World Cup but it’s about being in good form and being absolutely fit. I plan to build on it from this New Zealand series, then to South Africa series and so on.”Gambhir thinks the BCCI’s proposal to send India’s Test players to South Africa a week ahead of the tour is a great idea. “[If ] you go to South Africa after playing in subcontinental conditions you need to adjust. The more time players get to acclimatise themselves in those conditions, it will be fantastic preparation.”

Spurs: Journalist shares big Conte update

Tottenham Hotspur correspondent Sean Walsh has now shared a major midweek update on Antonio Conte’s future at the Premier League club, and it’s exactly what supporters need to hear.

The Lowdown: Conte eyeing PSG?

The Italian, who reportedly has a clause in his current Spurs deal which would allow him to leave at the end of this season, has been at the centre of claims linking him with a move to Ligue 1 giants Paris-Saint Germain.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Former Lilywhites manager Mauricio Pochettino is allegedly set to depart the French capital despite their Ligue 1 title win, prompting rumours of a possible Conte move to succeed the Argentine.

Le Parisien claimed last week that the 52-year-old is seriously interested in a PSG switch, even apparently telling their club chiefs that he is considering the job.

Amid these worrying developments, Walsh has now taken to social media with a positive update Spurs supporters may need to hear.

The Latest: Walsh makes major midweek Conte claim…

According to the reporter, who covers the north Londoners for 90min, Tottenham are ‘confident’ Conte will stay despite the PSG updates.

He goes on to say that former Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane is actually their top target, not Spurs’ man.

Walsh explained (via Twitter): “Understand that #THFC are confident that Antonio Conte will stay this summer despite reports linking him to PSG job. PSG’s top managerial target remains Zinedine Zidane.”

The Verdict: Great news for Spurs fans

Zidane, currently out of work and a proven Champions League-winning manager, is arguably a shoe-in for the Parc des Princes given his availability and how the fans there would idolise the France legend.

He would certainly be an easier appointment than Conte and one with just as much pedigree.

Taking this into account, Walsh’s update certainly makes sense and PSG director Leonardo may be best placed leaving Spurs’ manager and prioritising a move for Zidane.

'I apologised for getting Sachin out' – Andy McKay

Andy McKay says he apologised to the crowd after getting Sachin Tendulkar out short of what would have been his 50th Test century

ESPNcricinfo staff22-Nov-2010

Andy McKay took his first Test wicket in Nagpur, denying Sachin Tendulkar a 50th Test ton•AFP

The Boomtown Rats may have spoken for most when they sang ‘Tell Me Why I Don’t Like Mondays’, but for New Zealand the first day of the week started perfectly. Sachin Tendulkar went to the ninth ball of the morning and by the time the opening hour was up, VVS Laxman and Suresh Raina had joined him back in the pavilion. India’s lead was 135 but the situation was salvageable.Seven hours later, when Brendon McCullum and Gareth Hopkins walked off, the complexion of the match was very different. Rahul Dravid grew in fluency as the day progressed and with MS Dhoni staying true to his attacking instincts en route to 98, New Zealand were pushed into a corner. It will now require a couple of their batsmen to do a Laxman-and-Dravid to get out of this one.Andy McKay, who took 1 for 120 on debut and looked pretty lively at times, refused to accept that all was lost. “If we can bat in partnerships, play to our strengths and work through tomorrow … we’re obviously looking at it session by session,” he said at the end of play. “There’s still two days of cricket to go. Our goal is to push deep into the fifth day and see where we go from there. The pitch is pretty flat at the moment, but I’m sure it’ll start taking a bit more turn over the next couple of days.”India will still have a pretty hard ball to call on come the fourth morning and McKay suggested that surviving the first session was pivotal to New Zealand’s hopes of saving the game. “There’s a difference between the new ball and the old ball, particularly the carry through to the keeper,” he said. “We’re starting to see a little bit more up and down [movement]. Not too much sideways. I feel that the new ball will do a bit more in the morning given that we’ve had earlier starts. There’s a bit more in it for the seam bowlers that first hour. We used those conditions quite well this morning.”McKay was the one to break a few thousand hearts in the day’s second over, slanting a quick delivery across Sachin Tendulkar to take the outside edge. “I actually apologised to the crowd at the end of the over,” he said with a smile. “I bowled quite well yesterday and I think that warranted me taking the new ball with Chris Martin today. The ball that I got Sachin with, I was looking to bowl pretty quick and put a bit more effort into it. And it paid off.Another couple of wickets would have been great, but to get a player like Sachin Tendulkar as my first wicket is fantastic.”Except for a 71-run hour after lunch when Dravid and Dhoni found the gaps with regularity, New Zealand were seldom sloppy, and the bowlers were again backed up by some exceptional fielding. Dravid said as much later when asked about the rate of scoring. But once the ball went soft and with no recognised second spinner in the New Zealand ranks, India were always in control of the situation.Though it’s his aptitude with the bat that New Zealand need now, McKay insisted that he had enjoyed the tussle with a vaunted batting line-up in alien conditions. “I think I’ve been lucky with the handful of one-day games I’ve played,” he said. “I’ve come up against Sehwag and a couple of other big players. I don’t think one-day cricket’s too far withdrawn from Test cricket, but this is obviously a different grade altogether. To come up against this line-up, while daunting, is also very exciting. I really enjoyed the opportunity today.”

Villa: Bailey suffers injury blow

Aston Villa forward Leon Bailey has been dealt a blow after picking up another injury in the win over Norwich City on Saturday.

What’s the word?

Speaking in his post-match press conference following the 2-0 victory over Dean Smith’s side, manager Steven Gerrard revealed that the Jamaican speedster faces a race to be fit for next week’s trip to Turf Moor, having been withdrawn just 40 minutes into the clash with the Canaries.

Asked about the summer signing’s status, the Villa boss said: “It’s an ankle issue. In terms of the extent and the damage I’m sure he’ll be MRI scanned in the next 24 to 48 hours. I’m really disappointed and frustrated for him because he’s worked really hard to get back, he’s been training ever so well.”

The Englishman then went on to add: “He said there was a bit of a twist after the contact so we’ll get him looked at. He’s obviously going to be a major doubt for the next game against Burnley because it’s very rare that you come off the pitch and you’re available for the next game, so we are concerned about it.”

Huge Blow

That frustration for all concerned stems from the fact that it has been a disrupted debut campaign for the 24-year-old since his £25m move from Bayer Leverkusen, having been restricted to just seven Premier League starts for the Midlands side.

The £27m-rated man had missed a fair portion of the season over the festive period with a thigh injury, although since his return to action in February he has failed to nail down a regular starting berth, despite the club’s inconsistent form.

He had arrived last summer with a big reputation after providing 65 goal contributions in 156 games in all competitions for the Bundesliga side, although has since chipped in with just one goal and two assists in the top-flight during his brief stint at Villa Park.

Nevertheless, he had begun to show signs of life in his recent outings, notably going close to scoring early on in Saturday’s win, only to be denied by a fine save from opposition stopper Tim Krul, while Birmingham Mail writer John Townley wrote that he looked “lively in spells” prior to his withdrawal.

With Gerrard’s men still not certain of survival – despite reaching the ‘magic’ 40 point mark with that latest victory – they are still in need of all the help they can get, with Bailey’s potential absence in the coming weeks far from an ideal situation.

Yes, it has not gone to plan so far, but there is certainly an immense talent in there somewhere, with his former coach Heiko Herrlich previously suggesting that he “can do anything” such is his undoubted quality.

He looked as if he had begun to build some rhythm in recent weeks, although this latest setback is set to be a huge blow for both his manager, the supporters and the player himself.

5) A torcida do Palmeiras

Árbitro explica expulsões e relata nova briga no vestiário no Dérbi

Tahir nursing World Cup ambition

Imran Tahir, the Pakistan-born spinner now waiting to qualify to play for South Africa, is hoping his chance can come as early as the World Cup

Imran Tahir, the Pakistan-born spinner now waiting to qualify to play for South Africa, is hoping his chance can come as early as the World Cup, to be played in the subcontinent in February-March. Although the odds are stacked against Tahir – he has to prove to the Home Office that he is a skilled professional – Andrew Hudson, the convenor of selectors, hasn’t ruled out picking somebody from outside the provisional 30-man World Cup squad for the global tournament. Tahir has done his time according to the ICC rules, spending four years in South Africa, but it is with the Home Office that he is having to work a little harder.Legspin is the skill that will make him a South African resident, and not his being married to a South African woman, Sumayya Dildar. To do so, he will have to write an article stating the value he brings to the country. “I have to show that I can share my knowledge with them,” Tahir said. “What is legspin? What is googly? What is flipper? What is topspin? What is slider? How to bowl. How to practise. I have to write that I am a skilled man, and I can share that skill with the South Africans.”He was expecting it some time in December, but because of Christmas and holidays, there have been delays. An optimistic Tahir is expecting to be a South African resident by the second week of January. In preparation, he has had an exceptional season so far, leading the charts with 30 wickets for Dolphins in four first-class games. Twelve of those came in one game against the Titans, his former team that benched him throughout the whole of last season.Tahir’s attacking legspin has found a fan in arguably the greatest South African bowler of all time. In his column in the January-February issue of , Allan Donald wrote, “Tahir possesses a killer instinct and the variation to amplify his threat, and while you’ll have to accommodate the fact that he may leak a few runs, he is a constant wicket-taking danger. During his time at Warwickshire I also saw first-hand that he has the mentality and the temperament for big games. He’d be my pick if the Proteas are looking to play an extra spinner [in the world Cup, ahead of Robin Peterson and Roelof van der Merwe].”Tahir has had the pleasure of being Kevin Pietersen’s team-mate this season, and that he said helped him in more than one way. “When I saw KP, the media was all over him,” Tahir said. “He changed shoes, and that would make it to the newspapers. I thought I needed to do something to get the attention towards me. He is big. Media was making him bigger. I thought why can’t I grab all the attention. It was a challenge. And I like challenges. I needed to take wickets, and see what I could do. First took I took nine, then 12. KP also told me after games that he liked it because he didn’t have to stay on the field for long.”Moreover Pietersen has played with attacking spinners like Shane Warne. He understood wrist spin and the attacking fields required much better. “He helped me a lot,” Tahir said. “He talked to me during the games. Obviously there are many things you don’t know, and find out only when you play international cricket.” Pietersen had glowing things to say about Tahir before he went back to join his English team-mates for the Ashes.Tahir brings with him the experience of having bowled in various conditions: Pakistan, English counties and now South Africa. His new home has been the toughest to bowl in, he said, despite the fact that the batsmen here hardly get to face quality, attacking spin bowling. “These are really tough conditions,” he said. “These are hard tracks. County cricket is different. You always have June, July and August in your pocket as a spinner. Maybe September too, if it is a dry summer. Here you have to be really skilful. It’s easy for batsmen to come down the track and hit you if you flight it. If you bowl quick it is easy to play for the batsmen. Grounds are also small. It is a good challenge. This is my job, and I love doing it.”
