MS Dhoni’s recent pleas for the bowling coach’s position to be filled – it has been vacant since October – seem to have fallen on the right ears. The BCCI, it appears, has started work on replacing Venkatesh Prasad and has begun speaking to various people. Former South African fast bowler Allan Donald is among the contenders at this moment, and he has had informal discussions for the position.Donald said the Indian board was yet to formally approach him, but he was keen to take up the offer. However, he said, officials involved in the recruitment process had told him during the discussions that things could take longer than expected for the BCCI to take a final decision. It is expected that it will try and fill the position before South Africa’s tour of India in February.”Yes, I had an informal chat during Champions League Twenty20 with an Indian board official,” Donald told Cricinfo. “I would be interested to talk to the BCCI regarding the bowling coach job that is currently vacant and I’m keen [on the job].”The official, who met Donald in October when he had come to India for a TV commentary assignment, wanted to check if the South African was open for a full-time role.Another potential candidate is Shaun Pollock, who is a familiar figure in Indian cricket – he has a coaching role with Mumbai Indians in the IPL, and has worked in that capacity with Sachin Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh, among others. When contacted by Cricinfo, Pollock said he had no comment to make on the issue. The position has been lying vacant since Venkatesh Prasad’s sacking on October 15. The BCCI did not give any explanation for that decision but board sources said the slump in India’s bowling since the ICC World Twenty20 was becoming a growing concern.Donald, the first South African to take more than 300 Test wickets, has experience as a bowling coach – he took up the role in England for a short period in 2007. He then spent a year with Warwickshire as head coach but decided after the last season to give it up and spend more time with his family in South Africa. That stint with Warwickshire brought Donald into contact with Sreesanth, who was on a two-month stint with the county as an overseas player. It was Donald who suggested Sreesanth might be ready for a return to international cricket. Though impressed by Sreesanth’s talent, the straight-speaking Donald was critical of his training habits and said they needed to improve if he was to realise his full potential.

Olho vivo!

Newcastle transfer news on Aaron Ramsey

A journalist has revealed the latest on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Aaron Ramsey in the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Ramsey pursuit

The possibility of the Wales international moving to St James’ Park this month is certainly not going away any time soon.

Tuttosport reported last month (via Sport Witness) that the Magpies are the ‘most likely’ to sign the Juventus ace, while the same news outlet claimed last week that the Bianconeri are ‘ready to agree’ a loan deal with the Tyneside club, with the situation being a ‘work in progress’.

The Latest: Ramsey update

As per journalist Jonathan Shrager, there are currently no talks between the Magpies and Ramsey’s representatives with regards to a potential transfer this month, although it has not been ruled out.

He tweeted: “I am told that there are currently no conversations between Newcastle United and Aaron Ramsey’s representatives regarding a possible January transfer.”

The Verdict: Get it done

We are only two days into the transfer window, but Newcastle need to bring in players fast in order to give them the best possible chance of staying up.

One man who would likely help with that immensely is Ramsey, given his past experience in the Premier League and his ‘world-class’ ability, as cited by his Wales international team-mate Joe Allen.

The 31-year-old would also thrive under Eddie Howe’s system – Ian Rush claimed that the Magpies manager ‘would love’ Ramsey in his side and would ‘fit his style down to a tee’ (The Chronicle).

He is a transfer target who could potentially go under the radar as a smart piece of business from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium, should they be able to get a deal over the line.

India brush aside Afghanistan

A round-up of the first day’s games at the Under-19 World Cup

Afghanistan proved no match for defending champions India, who lived up to their billing as one of the tournament’s strongest sides with a facile eight-wicket win on the opening day of the Under-19 World Cup at the Bert Sutcliffe Oval. The Indian captain Ashok Menaria’s decision to field was fully justified by his bowlers against a jittery Afghanistan performance marred by terrible running between the wickets. The result was a poor batting card that read 118 all out in 49.2 overs, and that target proved easy for India to chase down.Such was the display of India’s new-ball pair, Sandeep Sharma and Saurabh Netravalkar, that Menaria bowled them out straight in the first 20 overs. Sandeep Sharma, who bowled four maidens and allowed just 13 runs from ten overs, began by dismissing Zakiullah Zaki in the seventh over, but the over that did the most damage was the 16th, bowled by Netravalkar. Bowling nippy left-arm medium pace, he forced Shir Shirzai and Hashmatullah Shaidi to nick catches to Harpreet Singh at slip. Afghanistan’s innings never yielded any significant partnerships as Manan Sharma and Gaurav Jathar did an excellent job with their varieties of spin to strangle the lower order. Only Noor-ul-Haq, the captain, managed to pass fifty before he was ninth out.The chase proved comfortable for India, despite the loss of Mayank Agarwal for 10. Rahul Kannaur (35) and Mandeep Singh added 58, and Menaria and Singh finished off the job. Singh finished the match with a six that also raised his half-century.At Palmerston North, Babar Azam followed a century with two wickets with his spin to inspire a 40-run win for Pakistan over West Indies. West Indies were given a very good start to their chase, with the openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Trevon Griffith posting a century stand, but Azam’s twin strikes derailed them. Griffith, having smashed his way to a stunning 84 from 55 deliveries, was bowled by Usman Qadir, son of the Pakistan great Abdul, following which Babar struck to get rid of Evin Lewis and the captain Andre Creary for ducks. Qadir added a second, and by this time the wheels were coming off the chase. Ahmed Shehzad, who featured in the last World Cup too, didn’t do much with the bat but made a big impact bowling his legspin which accounted for three wickets. West Indies folded to 257 in 46.5 overs with Brathwaite unbeaten on 92.Earlier, Azam continued his pre-tournament form with 129 from 132 balls while opening the batting after West Indies chose to field, and his century formed the crux of Pakistan’s 297 for 7. The next best score was 49 from the captain Azeem Ghumman, with whom Azam added 124 for the third wicket. Seven bowlers were used, of whom only two were successful; Jomel Warrican was the best of the lot with 3 for 63.Canada pulled off a close win over Zimbabwe at the Village Green in Christchurch, defending a target of 201 by ten runs. At 129 for 3 after 34 overs Zimbabwe appeared on course for victory but Canada stunned them by taking the last six wickets for 62 runs. Andrew Lindsay’s dismissal for 40 to the slow left-arm spin of Hiral Patel, who has played two ODIs for the senior side, was followed by the big wicket of Dean Mazhawidza, whose 75 had been a stand-out effort in an otherwise disappointing scorecard. Zain Mahmood, the new-ball bowler, returned to sniff out two wickets as Canada got their tournament campaign off to a winning start. Their innings had been carried to 210 by Usman Limbada, who made 90 from 114 balls against a disciplined Zimbabwean attack. Mazhawidza took four catches behind the stumps.South Africa knocked down a target of 217 without too much fuss against Ireland in Queenstown. Ireland’s Ben Ackland and Lee Nelson posted half-centuries to bail the side out after the top order collapsed to 36 for 4, adding 117. The next pair hacked up 45 in 4.2 overs to get Ireland to 216 for 6, but that was nowhere near enough for a strong South African side. An early jolt by Stuart Thompson with the new ball did little to deter their spirits, and the chase was put on its legs by Dominic Hendricks (47 from 49 balls) and Stephan Smith, who remained not out on 67 as the target was knocked down in the 44th over. “I’m very satisfied with our performance today, four or five of our players put in great performances and that will give them the confidence going into the remainder of the matches. The big match will be against Australia and hopefully we can take the momentum forward,” South Africa coach Ray Jennings, said. He was particularly impressed with Smith’s performance. “Stephan is showing the type of maturity that three years in the setup brings. Many felt that he shouldn’t be on tour but he has been an investment that is proving its worth,” he added.

Intikhab takes blame for Australia debacle

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam has accepted responsibility for Pakistan’s poor showing on their tour of Australia

Intikhab Alam: “I am not going to comment on any resignation but I will take full responsibility for the defeat”•Associated Press

Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam has accepted responsibility for his team’s poor showing on their tour of Australia, where they were whitewashed in the three Tests, five ODIs and the one-off Twenty20. Intikhab, however, has refused to resign like chief selector Iqbal Qasim did, and is prepared to face an inquiry.”I will not run away and will face an investigation,” Intikhab said after the team’s return to Karachi on Sunday morning. “I am not going to comment on any resignation but I will take full responsibility for the defeat.”Pakistan dropped several catches during the tour and let go of a great opportunity to win the second Test in Sydney, where they collapsed chasing 175. The Pakistan board appointed a six-member committee to investigate the defeat. This was Pakistan’s fourth-successive Test series whitewash to Australia.”It was a disappointing tour but if you look into the history, Pakistan has never performed well on a tour of Australia,” Intikhab said. “Our fielding was very poor and the batsmen lacked determination and their shot selection was bad. I will give a detailed report on team’s performance on the tour and hope a fair analysis is done.”He also denied rumours of a rift in the team and asked the fans to be patient and not jump to conclusions.”Talk of grouping is baseless. Such things come when the team loses.Australia is still the best team in the world and they played well. Australia lost a home Test series against South Africa, were defeated in Tests in India and handed Ashes to England in the last two years, but their people backed them and they have regrouped. We should also back our team.”Pressure has mounted on the top men of Pakistan cricket to step down, including the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt. The captain Mohammad Yousuf is also in danger of losing his job, after Butt announced midway through the tour that a new captain could be named. A disappointed Waqar Younis, the bowling and fielding coach, said he will explain the reasons for the team’s defeat to the National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports.

Ismael drops Hugill update

West Bromwich Albion manager Valerien Ismael has dropped an update on the future of on-loan centre-forward Jordan Hugill.

What’s the talk?

In recent comments cited by Birmingham Live, the 46-year-old Baggies boss refused to rule out the possibility of Hugill making a return to Norwich City before the end of the month, with the Frenchman revealing that he held talks with the 29-year-old forward regarding his future at The Hawthorns following the club’s recent £7m signing of Daryl Dike.

Speaking about Hugill, Ismael said: “We had a chat with Jordan earlier this week. It’s clear. I told him my opinion, my vision, he got clarity. It’s not only about Jordan. I’ve been here now – with my staff – for six months and we gave a chance to everyone. We have an overview of all the players, we know what we want to see and at some point you have to make a decision.

“Sometimes when you make a decision it could be painful for people but it’s important to make that decision to move forward and to make sure we do the right thing for the club. We want to see West Brom having success short term and long-term so at some point you have to make a decision for the club. I think anything can happen until January 31. My expectation now is more that something happens with outgoings.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering just how poor Hugill has been since his arrival in West Bromwich on a season-long loan deal last summer, Ismael’s suggestion that the centre-forward could be in line to make an early departure from The Hawthorns is sure to have left the club’s fanbase buzzing.

Indeed, over his 20 Championship appearances so far this season, the £1.62m-rated man has scored just one goal, has failed to register a single assist and has missed a whopping nine big chances for his side, in addition to hitting the target with just 0.4 shots and making a mere 0.3 key passes per game.

These returns have seen the £36k-per-week forward average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.56, ranking him as Albion’s fifth-worst performer in the second tier of English football.

As such, it is evident that Hugill is simply not up to the standard required for a side who are pushing for automatic promotion back to the Premier League this season, leading us to believe that Ismael should indeed send the 29-year-old back to Norwich this month.
