Marcelo Flores: Arsenal’s own Hazard?

Marcelo Flores could be Arsenal’s next big talent to emerge from the famed Hale End academy.

The 18-year-old attacking midfielder, who is yet to make his senior bow for the club, was recently called up to Mexico’s friendly against Chile in America, where he came off the bench to make his international debut in an eight-minute cameo.

This would have surely caught the eye of first-team boss Mikel Arteta, who can always do with extra bodies in the engine room, particularly of an advanced nature.

Born in Georgetown, Ontario in Canada, Flores was also eligible for the North American country, as well as England, but clearly Gerardo Martino was eager to tie him to El Tri as quickly as possible.

The 5 foot 4 pocket dynamo has been in electric form for the Gunners’ U18s this campaign, delivering six goals and two assists in just nine appearances, via Transfermarkt, so it’s no wonder he’s caught the eye on a much larger stage.

Speaking ahead of Mexico’s clash with their South American rivals, Martino waxed lyrical about Arsenal’s young gem to reporters, as relayed by ESPN.

“Marcelo Flores awakens the hopes that all spectators have,” he said. “He is a different player who always asks for the ball.”

The teenage sensation excelled for the national team’s U20 squad during November’s inaugural 2021 Revelations Cup, where he provided two goals in wins over Brazil and USA, and even earned the accolade of being the ‘Player of the Tournament.’

According to Goal.com, Arteta has invited him to train with the first-team squad several times since taking the helm at the Emirates Stadium. “It was like a dream training with the first team,” Flores revealed about it in December 2020. “I couldn’t believe everything that was happening. I am enjoying all the moments that I am living. I want to become a club legend.”

Flores was named in the Guardian’s ‘Next Generation 2020′ list of the ’60 best talents in world football’, where journalist Tom Marshall likened him to former foe Eden Hazard, as well as Philippe Coutinho.

It is the former who the 18-year-old prodigy could really draw further comparisons to, especially given his height, playing style and potential ability.

Arteta could well unearth his very own Hazard if he chooses to trust Flores in the first team going forward. He really only has Martin Odegaard as an out-and-out no.10, so there’s certainly scope to hand him his debut, particularly with the hefty fixture list and his impressive performances for both club and country.

Sreesanth gives India total control

Indian cricket’s prodigal son Sreesanth returned in style with a five-for to leave Sri Lanka in tatters in the second Test in Kanpur

Indian cricket’s prodigal son Sreesanth returned to international cricket in style with a five-for, and six wickets overall, to leave Sri Lanka staring at defeat in the second Test in Kanpur. Sri Lanka, forced to follow on after tea, were tottering in the second innings still 356 runs adrift with six wickets standing.Though India’s spinners and Sri Lanka’s batsmen – the senior-most duo contrived a run-out while following on – contributed to the collapse, most of the work was done by Sreesanth, playing his first international game in 19 months. For nine successive overs in the first session, and for seven on the trot in the second, he ran in hard, hit the deck and found life in a slow pitch. He led the way in the second innings too, removing Tillakaratne Dilshan with a leg cutter, before Sri Lanka started to disintegrate against spin.Mahela Jayawardene and Prasanna Jayawardene offered some resistance with a 60-run partnership in the first innings but Sri Lanka threatened to implode without much fight in the second. Tharanga Paranavitana was trapped by an arm-ball from Virender Sehwag and Kumar Sangakkara chopped a topspinner from Harbhajan on to the stumps. However, the decisive moment of the collapse, and something that exposed the visitors’ mindset, was the run-out of Mahela, the first-innings top scorer. Sangakkara pushed the ball to the right of a straightish midwicket and called for a suicidal run but Mahela had no chance to beat the throw from Yuvraj Singh. Perhaps the fact that they had lost nine wickets in just over two sessions and yielded their biggest-ever lead to India had knocked the fight out of them.Or perhaps it was just Sreesanth. Green Park was where he played his last Test 19 months ago before disappearing from the sports pages and becoming an occasional feature on Page 3. Today, he stormed back, lifting India with spells that read 9-2-28-3 in the first session and 7-2-18-2 in the second. His bowling was sublime through the day but the high point of his redemptive journey was the delivery that gave him his fifth wicket, a peach that cut away from the middle stump line to take out the off stump of the clueless Rangana Herath. The celebration was muted: a folding of palms in prayer and gratitude, the right hand raised to accept the high-fives from his team-mates and the face slowly creasing into a smile. It wasn’t dramatic, it wasn’t the usual Sreesanth theatrics that make him perhaps the most complex cricketer in this side. Today, those signature self-exhortations at the top of the run-up were rarely seen, as was any special celebration after a wicket. It was all about the bowling. If he troubled the batsmen with seam movement in the morning, he found some reverse swing post-lunch with the old ball and continued to harass the batsmen. He got the big breakthrough of the second session when he terminated the fighting partnership between the two Jayawardenes. Prasanna had taken an aggressive route, slog sweeping and driving the spinners and, though he faced Zaheer Khan, he didn’t have to play Sreesanth till he reached 35. Sreesanth probed Prasanna with 11 testing deliveries that included leg cutters, inswingers and a lovely inswinging yorker but Prasanna stood firm. However, Prasanna chased the 12th, a short and wide one, and got a thin nick through to the keeper. That was a recurring theme. Sreesanth would severely test the batsmen with a cluster of good deliveries and would invariably pick up a wicket with one slightly wide from the stumps. His pace wasn’t frightening (135 kmph was the average), there were no fiery bouncers and he didn’t swing it around corners, but what he did was land each ball on a probing line and length, and cut it either way just enough to test the batsmen. He had his share of luck too – two batsmen played on off the inside edge – and Sri Lanka’s batsmen didn’t tailor their techniques to the demands of the pitch.Instead of playing as close to the body as possible on a pitch with variable bounce, the batsmen erred by playing away. Tharanga Paranavitana was set up by a bouncer that crashed into his shoulder before he pushed at one cutting away from him. Sangakkara, who faced 24 deliveries from Zaheer Khan today, fell in the first over he faced off Sreesanth. Sangakkara played out three straight deliveries but was lured into a cover drive by a full and wide one, and ended up dragging it on to his stumps. Thilan Samaraweera was the next to go, pushing hard and early at a length delivery cutting away from him.Not everything went Sreesanth’s way though. He produced an edge from his best delivery but it didn’t get him a wicket. Jayawardene, on zero, pushed at one that cut away late and got an edge but neither MS Dhoni nor Sachin Tendulkar at first slip went for the catch. It was the wicketkeeper’s catch. Jayawardene got another reprieve on 25 when he edged a late cut off Harbhajan to first slip where Rahul Dravid couldn’t hold on to a sharp chance. The same thing happened in the second innings too but it didn’t matter on either occasion as Mahela couldn’t carry on for long.It was not a completely solo show by Sreesanth, though, as the debutant Pragyan Ojha kept things tight, allowing Dhoni the luxury to attack from the other end. Ojha also got the big wicket of the first innings when he beat the top scorer Mahela in the flight and produced a mishit to mid-on. Ojha also hastened the end of the Sri Lankan innings post-tea by trapping Muttiah Muralitharan in front but Sreesanth was undoubtedly the star today.

Podence passed Lage’s test vs Brighton

With Bruno Lage’s Wolverhampton Wanderers side heading into Wednesday evening’s Premier League clash in something of a slump in form, having won just one of their last four league outings and scoring just one goal over these fixtures, the 45-year-old manager would have undoubtedly been hoping for a much-improved result from Wolves’ trip to Brighton & Hove Albion.

And, while it was by no means an all-out attack display from the visitors, Romain Saiss’ superb first-half strike following a delicious Ruben Neves through ball was enough for Wolves to take all three points back to Molineux, with the game ending 1-0.

However, while it is true that both Saiss and Neves were two of Lage’s better performers on the night, it was undoubtedly 26-year-old Daniel Podence who really stole the show against Brighton.

Won 62% duels

Being handed just his third start of the Premier League season, Lage somewhat surprisingly decided to unleash the Portugal international in a central attacking role against the Seagulls, taking the place of the suspended Raul Jimenez at the tip of Wolves’ attack.

And, over the course of his 90 minutes on the pitch at the American Express Community Stadium, the £22.5m-rated man highly impressed in an unfamiliar role, hitting the target with two shots, completing five dribbles, making two interceptions and winning eight of his 13 attempted duels – a success rate of 62%.

These returns saw the man who Pedro Neto dubbed a “mini-Hazard” receive a SofaScore match rating of 7.3, the second-highest of any player to feature in the match, while Birmingham Live also awarded the £60k-per-week forward an eight in their own player ratings, stating of the 26-year-old’s performance:

“Podence played as a false nine in Wolves’ fluid front three and popped up all over the pitch in an all-action display. There were lots of delightful flicks and tricks, especially one reverse pass to Marcal. Podence was a huge threat throughout.”

As such, considering how little game time Podence has been given by Lage so far this season, if the fixture against Brighton was the Portuguese dynamo’s big test, there is absolutely no doubt that the former Sporting CP winger passed with flying colours.

West Brom: Ismael reveals team news blow

West Brom welcome Reading to The Hawthorns this afternoon and will be hoping to take all three points to close the gap to second-placed Bournemouth.

Valerien Ismael’s men could be just three points behind the automatic promotion places if the Cherries lose today to Blackburn Rovers, so it is vital for Albion to go into this game all guns blazing. However, there could be a setback after Ismael revealed some concerning news in his press conference which will leave Baggies fans gutted.

The pandemic has been on the rise in the football leagues. Both Championship and Premier League clubs have been experiencing higher rates of infection in the last month, and now it seems that the West Brom camp has been hit too.

Ismael revealed the extent of the Baggies’ viral outbreak last night, telling the press: “We’ve got two positive cases and possibly a third one”, and adding that “two players will miss the game”.

The names of those who have contracted the virus have not been revealed, but we will surely see if any of the first team is affected when the line up is revealed this afternoon, and the West Brom manager will be hoping that it won’t unduly affect their chances of winning today.

This fresh blow to the squad will see the club needing to indulge in some damage control to ensure that the affected players haven’t infected others, causing a huge outbreak which couldn’t come at a more vulnerable time for the Baggies.

West Brom could be without eight players today, with a number of injuries also affecting the squad after Matt Phillips was written off for the upcoming clash at The Hawthorns, alongside Dara O’Shea, Ken Zohore and Kean Bryan, who remain sidelined without any certainty as to when they will return.

Ismael will already be working hard to keep his side in sight of a promotion place at the top of the Championship, but this latest setback with the viral outbreak could put a spanner in the works ahead of the January transfer window.

Everton: Benitez reveals DCL latest

Everton manager Rafa Benitez has revealed the latest information regarding striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s fitness, with the striker set to be involved in the Toffees’ next league game against Newcastle.

What’s the latest?

The Spaniard was left furious after the Merseyside club’s request to have their meeting with the Clarets postponed was rejected by the Premier League with the Blues dealing with an injury crisis. The fixture has since been postponed due to positive cases in the Everton camp.

Everton have a seriously limited roster of players to select from, with some U23s facing a call-up to the first-team, particularly in the attacking areas with the likes of Richarlison, Andros Townsend and Demarai Gray unavailable.

This has given Benitez no choice but to involve Calvert-Lewin for the first time since the Englishman suffered a toe injury that has kept him sidelined for three months.

On the lack of available players, Benitez said: “The reality is some of these players include Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has been out injured for two months. We have other players with knocks and we will have to push them.

“They are not fit and who will take responsibility if something happens to them because they have to play 90 minutes? We are exposing them.”

Fans over the moon

The situation is certainly strange, but it will be a huge relief for Everton fans to see the star striker back playing. However, there will also certainly be concern regarding whether or not the 24-year-old’s injury is aggravated, therefore prolonging his spell on the sidelines.

The Toffees have been lucky that both Andros Townsend (three) and Demarai Gray (five) have been able to chip in with goals during Calvert-Lewin’s absence, however, they will be desperate to have their best forward back available.

Calvert-Lewin was a major presence for the Toffees last season, then under Carlo Ancelotti, as the Englishman scored 21 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions.

Moreover, the 24-year-old had scored in each of his three Premier League appearances this campaign before picking up his injury, further highlighting the difference he can make to this Everton team.

Everton fans will have high expectations for the England international, however, there is plenty of evidence that he can meet if not exceed those desires.

If he comes back and hits the ground running instantly, supporters will no doubt be over the moon.
