Victor Luís: 'Estamos conseguindo virar a chave rapidamente'

– O time merece, a torcida merece, o grupo todo merece. Graças a Deus conseguimos ir bem e trazer a classificação.

New South Wales have called on the fast bowlers Aaron Bird and Burt Cockley after their attack took a couple of injury hits ahead of the FR Cup game against Queensland in Cairns on Saturday. The Blues have named a 12-man squad that does not feature Moises Henriques or Mark Cameron, both of whom had been expected to play. The destructive Cameron, who was part of the Australia A tour of India last month, has struggled to get over an ankle injury he picked up during the Blues’ recent Sheffield Shield game in Perth. Henriques, the promising allrounder who spent time with Australia’s squad in Darwin in September, has battled a side injury in the past few weeks and remains unable to bowl.It could mean a possible one-day debut for Cockley, the right-arm fast-medium bowler who played his sole first-class match late last summer. Bird had been chosen in the squad for the opening FR Cup match of the season but was left out of the starting line-up.The Blues began their campaign with a tight victory against Western Australia last week. Romano claims Dan James signing is done

Daniel James’ summer move from Manchester United to Leeds United is done, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: James not needed at United

The Welshman may have started in the Red Devils’ 1-0 win away to Wolves two days ago, but he has now been deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

The signings of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo have put him further down the list of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attacking options and Leeds have struck a deal to sign him.

The Latest: Leeds deal completed

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday morning, Romano confirmed that the deal was ‘done and confirmed’, with a £25m deal taking place.

He tweeted: “Daniel James deal has been completed between Leeds and Manchester United, done and confirmed. Permanent move, paperworks signed.”

James will head off on international duty for Wales but could make his debut at home to Liverpool on 12 September 12.

The Verdict: Can Bielsa work his magic?

Marcelo Bielsa has been a long-time admirer of James and it will be fascinating to see what he can do with the 23-year-old.

His end product could do with improving, with his electrifying pace sometimes not complemented by a clinical final ball – he set up just nine goals in 74 matches for United – but he remains a young player with a high ceiling.

Should Bielsa hand James his debut against Liverpool, he could have extra motivation as a former Manchester United player. Romano’s tweet declaring that the deal is done could be music to the ears of Leeds fans on this deadline day morning.

ICL doesn't satisfy rules of 'authorised' cricket – Modi

Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, has ruled out the possibility of official sanction to the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) as it fails to meet the norms of ‘authorised unofficial cricket’

Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, has ruled out the possibility of official sanction to the Indian Cricket League (ICL) as it fails to meet the norms of ‘authorised unofficial cricket’. Modi added that it wouldn’t be possible to sanction the ICL because there is no window in the international calendar to accommodate the tournament.Modi, who is also a BCCI vice-president, is part of a five-member ICC panel to review the laws governing official and unofficial cricket. He also emphasised that the BCCI isn’t just sidelining the ICL and that similar tournaments that come up will be treated the same way.”Recognition comes with a lot of caveats and with lot of conditions and lot of rules,” Modi told the business news channel CNBC-TV 18. “I do not think this particular tournament (ICL) would be able to adhere to those conditions. If you look at a window, where is the window at the end of the day? We are having a tough time ourselves at the BCCI.”It is not only the ICL. The ethos and the new tournaments that are coming up by corporates are for profit making. So it is not one issue. There are many issues that are involved in terms of deciding whether what official cricket or unofficial cricket should be and this is a mandate the ICC is looking into.”Modi felt there was no place for parallel leagues in sport today. “In every country, in every sport there is a pyramid system for running and controlling a particular sport,” he said. “We need to ensure that that pyramid is intact and that from the ICC’s perspective whatever partnerships that the ICC and its members have with their commercial partners or with their players, is there to stay.”Looking back at the first season of the IPL, Modi claimed that three teams, including the Kolkata Knight Riders, have broken even but added that it would take at least four years for all eight teams to break even. The top two sides – Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Superkings – will take part in the inaugural Champions Twenty20 League from December 3-10 and Modi said those teams will naturally benefit more.”I think in year one, three teams will make money realistically,” he said. “But I originally predicted that they would all break even by year four. Rajasthan Royals (the IPL winners) have now qualified for the Champions League and they get a large purse and participation fees.”Clarifying the rules for trading players for the second season – set to get underway in April 2009 – Modi said teams that have spent less than the US$ 5million cap for the first year will not be able to carry over the remainder for the next auction as it would give them an advantage over the others. The IPL auction will take place in Mumbai on February 6 for franchises to purchase new players and an extra US $2 million will be given to each for that purpose. The maximum number of foreign players per team has been increased from eight to ten. Teams will now have the option of transferring players and Modi confirmed that that the transfer price and revenue sharing after the transfer will have to be mutually decided between the player and the team owner.”Teams and club owners, when they bought the team in year one they bought blindly,” Modi said. “Since the owner has signed a three-year contract with a particular player, he will decide whether to put that player in the trading window and then he needs to get the consent of the player before putting him on the trading window. Then they have to decide mutually what the price is going to be. The base price must remain same as the auction price because the player can’t get anything less.”

Tottenham Hotspur: Spurs dealt blow in Luis Diaz chase

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a crushing blow in their pursuit of Porto winger Luis Diaz, with the Colombian looking likely to join Everton [Football London].

The Lowdown: Tottenham eye reinforcements out wide before the window closes

With 2021/22 well underway, Lilywhites boss Nuno Espirito Santo will no doubt be desperate to strengthen up any remaining weak areas as he sculpts a squad capable of challenging for Champions League qualification this campaign.

In particular, the north Londoners look to be in the market for a wide-man, with Jeremy Doku and Adama Traore linked with a switch to N17 in recent times.

However, one man who looks unlikely to pitch up at Spurs this summer is 24-year-old Diaz, owing to recent reports.

The Latest: Diaz looks set for Merseyside; Spurs and Chelsea miss out

Divisional rivals Everton are in talks to sign Diaz in what is a blow for Tottenham, with Toffees attacking midfielder James Rodriguez looking set to go the other way on loan to complete the deal [Football London].

Jose Mourinho was said to be interested in in bringing the Colombia international to Spurs last season, with the report from Football.London calling him a ‘long time’ target.

Chelsea were also mooted to be monitoring his situation heavily, nevertheless Diaz now looks to be on his way to Merseyside over London to work with newly crowned Blues manager Rafael Benitez.

The Verdict: Losing out on Diaz will leave a bitter taste

Held in extremely high regard after his four-goal haul at the 2021 Copa America, losing out on Diaz will come as a bitter blow to the Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy.

In 2020/21, Barrancas-born Diaz starred for his current employers, registering 17 goal contributions in 46 appearances; 11 goals and six assists [Transfermarkt].

Furthermore, his individual quality was on show for everyone to see last term, picking up four man of the match awards in the Liga NOS due to his attacking flair [WhoScored].

Once labelled as ‘excellent’ by Colombia teammate Juan Cuadrado, who said he will achieve ‘great things’, the news that he will not be linking up with Tottenham will undoubtedly leave a bitter taste in the mouths of Spurs supporters, especially if he shines in the top flight with Everton.

Hampshire confirm new drainage plans

Hampshire have confirmed that they will be improving the drainage at the Rose Bowl next winter thanks to a grant of £600,000 from the England & Wales Cricket Board

Cricinfo staff14-Nov-2008Hampshire have confirmed that they will be improving the drainage at the Rose Bowl next winter thanks to a grant of £600,000 from the England & Wales Cricket Board.Nigel Gray, Hampshire’s head groundsman, told BBC Radio Solent: “The new system will allow us to play late in the day on rainy mornings. In addition, I wouldn’t expect to lose a subsequent day after a full day’s rain.”Last winter, two playing strips were relaid and will be put to use for the first time in 2009, though not for September’s ODI between England and Australia. “We’ll probably play a championship match and a one-day game on them to help bed them in slowly,” said Gray. “We’ll see how they play and see what reaction we get from the relaying.””The new pitches will lie about an inch above the rest of the outfield allowing water to drain off the square better,” said Gray. “When the outfield work is completed next winter we will have a fast draining ground and play will be possible on days when in the past that hasn’t been the case.”
