England take control after run spree

New Zealand Under-19s captain, George Walker, began a fightback at Taunton but there is a long way to go for his team after England Under-19s made 512 for 8

John Ward at Taunton27-Jul-2008
ScorecardThere must be something about the late afternoon sun at Taunton that encourages batsmen. On the first day there was the monumental English partnership; on the second New Zealand Under-19s, having gone into tea on the eve of destruction, managed to go through the final session without losing a wicket, although still very much behind in the match. They owed their fightback to the superb resilience of their captain George Worker and all-rounder Greg Morgan, who put on 79 together without being parted. All is not lost yet.The day belonged to England from the beginning, and even at the end, though defied, they still held an overwhelming advantage. Firstly there was the matter of building on the large edifice of the first day, and eight runs off the first over of the day showed what England’s approach would be. The matter of England’s largest ever Under-19 partnership, previously 266 against West Indies in 1993, was soon taken care of, and the two players responsible, Daniel Redfern and Greg Smith, took their stand to 287 before they were parted. It was finally ended, as some would say in the only possible way, by a run-out. The batsmen hesitated over a single from a drive by Redfern into the covers, and a superb direct hit at the bowler’s end from Tanati Clarke had him just short, dismissed for 151.The New Zealanders were jubilant at their belated success, but the mood did not last: soon even new batsman Liam Dawson found himself batting without a slip behind him. Smith pierced the packed off-side field to bring up his 150 with a four, and was eventually dismissed for 157, lofting a ball from Harry Boam to the midwicket boundary.Dawson, after playing himself in sensibly, soon began to do his job of hammering the tired bowlers, paying special attention to the left-arm spinner Nick Beard, who had so stemmed the run flow on the first day. He hit him for two sixes, the first straight over the sightscreen, the second over wide mid-on to bring up his 50 off 47 balls. He was 76 at lunch, having lost Ben Brown for 3, dragging a ball from James Neesham outside the off stump on to his wicket.Dawson had no problems approaching his century, continuing to play bold strokes through the eighties and nineties, and reaching his century off 94 balls. It was by some way the fastest of the three hundreds during the innings, but there was much less pressure on him after that major partnership. He lost Chris Woakes, stumped immediately after hitting a six off Worker in his aggressive 40, and then it took a brilliant full-length catch at wide long-on by Morgan to end Dawson’s innings for exactly 100. At this point, 512 for 8, England declared, their ninth-best U-19 total. All the bowlers struggled, with Neesham alone taking two wickets, though he tended to be erratic. Beard’s early economical figures were later swamped as the batsmen worked out how to play him and he lost confidence, finishing with 1 for 122 in 38.3 overs, a hard learning curve.Worse was to follow for the tourists, as England’s seam bowlers tore through their top order. Four wickets fell for 32, all to lbw decisions that looked there or thereabouts, to batsmen moving across thr stumps and being beaten by bowlers – namely Woakes and Ian Saxelby – who were able to move the ball in off the pitch, with umpire Peter Hartley the executioner each time. Saxelby took two in his first over, just before tea, when the innings had reached its nadir of 33 for 4.Standing amidst the ruins was the captain, Worker, who had borne his responsibilities manfully as the leader and occasionally with the ball, and now refused to yield with the bat. Every now and then he would break forth with a good boundary, and in the final session he at last found a partner able to stay with him in Morgan, who is an intense cricketer. Morgan applied every degree of concentration he had to support his captain, and gradually they settled in.Worker reached his 50 off 134 balls, defying the English seamers with an older (although changed) ball and the leg-breaks of Will Beer, which turned sharply at times. They live to fight another day, but New Zealand still have a very long uphill struggle ahead of them.

Palace fans react to Amad Diallo links

Crystal Palace are interested in a move for Manchester United winger Amad Diallo, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The journalist claimed that the 19-year-old is expected to depart Old Trafford on loan during the current window. Palace and FC Basel are two clubs name-checked with an interest by Romano, with other sides in the Premier League and Bundesliga also keen.

Diallo, who can play anywhere across the front three, is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt and has made eight senior appearances for United.

Patrick Vieira is yet to add to his wide or central attacking ranks this summer, with one goalkeeper, two defenders and three midfielders signed by the Frenchman thus far.

Both @cpfc_xtra and @CPFCtransfersHQ shared Romano’s claim about Diallo via Twitter, and here is what these Eagles fans had to say in reply, with one describing the 19-year-old as ‘special’.

Ten players, products of the Lancashire Development Programme, have agreed to new contracts or contract extensions with the county. The players, seven of whom have come through the club’s academy, are expected to form the backbone of the senior squad in the future.Manager Mike Watkinson recently held contract talks with Lancashire’s uncapped players and said he was delighted with the signings and had high expectations from all ten.”Despite four no-results, a number of our younger players have had opportunities in this year’s Pro40 campaign,” he said. ” It has been very encouraging to see the energy, talent and commitment demonstrated by these players, and it bodes well for the future.”Fast bowler Tom Smith, among those given a contract, hopes to establish himself as a key member of the Lancashire attack. He has impressed Watkinson with his form with bat and ball since his return from a stint at Leicestershire.”My batting has come on in leaps and I would like to think of myself as more of an allrounder. I batted in the top six at Leicestershire in the limited-over games and at seven in the four-dayers, and I got 50-plus a couple of times and had a run average of about 40. After the responsibility there I know I can do it,” he told the .Smith said he had worked very hard on his bowling, which earned him a place in the Lancashire first-team attack. “After my first season I played really well, but I then changed a few things and it did not quite work out. This season, I have gone back to basics, hitting a good length six times out of six.”The others to sign new contracts are Simon Kerrigan, Stephen Cheetham, Karl Brown, Steven Croft, Gareth Cross, Kyle Hogg, Steven Mullaney, Oliver Newby and Stephen Parry.

Southampton: Saints eye Nathaniel Phillips loan

Southampton are said to be interested in a loan deal for Liverpool centre-back Nathaniel Phillips, as their search for a Jannik Vestergaard replacement rumbles on [The Athletic].

The Lowdown: Shaky start for Saints

Starting 2021/22 with a lacklustre 3-1 defeat away to Everton on Merseyside, Saints manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be under no illusions – he needs to strengthen in central defence after the departure of Vestergaard to Leicester City [BBC].

With just under two weeks of the window left to go, Southampton now look to have turned their attention to 6 foot 3 colossus Phillips.

The Latest: Southampton keen on Phillips

As relayed by The Athletic, the St Mary’s club are believed to be looking towards Liverpool defender Phillips to fill the void left by Vestergaard.

They are not looking to do a permanent deal, however Southampton would be willing to come to some sort of loan arrangement for his services.

Newcastle United and Burnley are amongst two of many clubs mooted to have been monitoring his situation this summer.

The Verdict: Phillips would be a solid addition

An important part of Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League qualification last term, Phillips would be a solid signing for the Saints due to his domineering presence and bravery at the back.

In 2020/21, he made 20 appearances for the Reds, notching two goal contributions; one goal and one assist [Transfermarkt].

Influential at the heart of the Liverpool defence, Phillips managed to successfully win no fewer than 5.6 aerial duels per fixture across the same time period [WhoScored].

Once labelled as ‘brilliant’ by his manager Jurgen Klopp after bagging the Reds’ Player of the Month award for March 2021, Southampton could do a lot worse than to sign Phillips up before the end of August [Liverpool FC Official].

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Will Hughes update

Crystal Palace are poised to agree a deal with Watford for midfielder Will Hughes, according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon.

And, as to be expected, a number of Eagles supporters have been reacting to the news on social media.

Palace want to bring in a midfielder and two forwards before the end of the month, and it seems as if Hughes could be the midfield addition.

Nixon posted a story on Sunday, claiming Palace have now tabled a bid worth £7m plus add-ons for the 26-year-old.

Personal terms for Hughes at around £60,000-a-week shouldn’t be an issue in regards to a transfer, with Palace prioritising the Hornets man over Huddersfield Town’s Lewis O’Brien.

Hughes has turned down a new contract at Vicarage Road, and it appears as if a deal that could rise to £10m could go through.

Palace fans react

@cpfc_xtra shared The Sun’s report on Hughes on Sunday lunchtime. This is what these Palace fans had to say in reply, with one labelling it as ‘embarrassing’.

Derek Underwood, the former England spinner, will begin his one-year tenure as president of the MCC on Wednesday, taking over from Mike Brearley.”It is indeed a great honour to become president of MCC, especially to have been invited by Mike Brearley, for whom I have always had the utmost respect and admiration. I look forward immensely to the year ahead,” Underwood said.”It is an exciting era for the sport with Twenty20 cricket opening up so many possibilities for the game worldwide. It is important for all those who work in cricket to embrace that change whilst protecting the game’s rich heritage.”MCC is ideally placed to be at the heart of much of this change. With its development of the masterplan project at Lord’s, its independent voice of the MCC World Cricket committee and its playing remit to develop the game worldwide, the club has the passion, stature and desire to ensure the best for our wonderful game in the years ahead.”Joining the MCC committee for a three-year period will be John Barclay, for his third stint, Rachael Heyhoe-Flint, Peter Lever and, for the first time, Peter Carroll. David Faber, Matthew Fleming, Sir John Major and Nick Pocock are stepping down.MCC, the lawmakers of the game, are also introducing Law 6 (the bat), which becomes official as of October 1. “MCC takes its role as guardian of the Laws and Spirit of Cricket extremely seriously,” Keith Bradshaw, MCC’s chief executive, said, “and by ensuring that bats are made in the traditional manner, we hope to safeguard the balance between bat and ball.”MCC members voted almost unanimously in favour of re-writing Law 6 to ensure handles are made primarily from wood, cane and twine. With a two-thirds majority needed to pass the change, 98.6% of members at a special general meeting in May were in favour of protecting the make-up of the bats.
