'Now is the time for the players to deliver the goods' says Anderson ahead of C and G quarter final tie

Despite their disappointing one day form in other competitions this season, Somerset are expecting a big crowd for their Cheltenham and Gloucester quarter final match against Worcestershire at the County Ground on Wednesday

Richard Walsh15-Jul-2002Despite their disappointing one day form in other competitions this season, Somerset are expecting a big crowd for their Cheltenham and Gloucester quarter final match against Worcestershire at the County Ground on Wednesday.Tickets are still available, but judging by the large number of personal callers, and the volume of telephone calls that were being dealt with by the office staff early this morning the game looks like it could even be a sell out.Out on the pitch, fast bowlers Andrew Caddick and Richard Johnson were being put through their paces by Kevin Shine and his team, and it is expected that the pair will be back to spearhead the attack for the Cidermen against a Worcestershire team who are riding high at the moment.Chief executive Peter Anderson told me: "We are hoping for a full ground on Wednesday to support the team. We are the holders and even though we haven’t been performing well in one day matches, now is the time for the players to dig deep and deliver the goods."He continued: "Johnson and Caddick are having fitness tests today and tomorrow, and all the signs are looking good. Both want to play and the coaches are very optimistic, and of course we will have Jamie Cox back and Marcus Trescothick back so we should be at full strength. The match will not be on television, so if people want to see what promises to be a fascinating game they will have to come along to watch for themselves."

Nuno Santo shares Oliver Skipp update

Nuno Espirito Santo has reportedly confirmed that Oliver Skipp will be part of his first-team squad at Tottenham Hotspur next season, which will surely delight Spurs fans after his superb season out on loan at Norwich City.

What’s the word?

According to the Evening Standard, the new Spurs boss has told both Skipp and Ryan Sessegnon that they will be given opportunities to impress in the first team next season.

He said:

“Every player of the squad is in my plan, every player, every player.

“Even the Under-23s that are working with us are in my plans because this is how we build a strong group. Everybody is going to be needed.”

The Portuguese manager was hired late last month, which gives him a little over six weeks to prepare for Spurs’ opening game against Manchester City in the Premier League.

Considering no transfer business has been concluded so far by the North London club, it is perhaps no surprise that the Portuguese manager will turn towards the likes of Skipp and Sessegnon in pre-season, as a large number of Spurs’ players are still on holiday after playing at the Euros and Copa America this summer.

Can Skipp be a regular next season?

Spurs fans will be especially excited about Skipp, after the £9m-rated gem, who is a product of the youth academy at Spurs, was a key part of Norwich’s promotion to the top-flight last season.

The 20-year-old joined Daniel Farke’s side on loan for the season and was a regular as they won the title, featuring 45 times in the second tier and averaging a solid 6.90 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

He certainly won a lot of plaudits from Farke, who described him as the “perfect” player as a result of his performances and attitude during his time at Carrow Road. Consequently, the German manager will no doubt be disappointed if he cannot get him back on loan for the upcoming Premier League campaign.

However, Norwich’s loss is Spurs’ gain, as Skipp can provide Santo with an alternative to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in defensive-midfield after the Dane played every minute in the Premier League last season. He could also be an upgrade on Harry Winks, whose form has been less than impressive in recent seasons, failing to earn a seasonal average match rating above 6.6.

Skipp looks like he definitely has the potential to be a key player for Spurs in the future, and fans will be hoping that the 21/22 season proves to be his breakthrough with the Lilywhites after Nuno’s recent admission.

And, in other news… Paratici can upgrade Nuno’s Spurs defence with swoop for “one of the best”

Journalist confirms Villa’s pursuit for Emile Smith-Rowe is over

Luke Hatfield, from the Express and Star, has all but confirmed that Aston Villa have accepted defeat in their pursuit of highly-rated Arsenal youngster Emile Smith-Rowe.

Dean Smith has been chasing the 20-year-old attacking midfielder all summer, but has seen two offers rejected by the Gunners, who are desperate to keep one of their most promising talents.

Having seen a bid knocked back in the region of £30m for Smith-Rowe, the Villa Park outfit were set to launch another to try and test Arsenal’s patience.

However, Mikel Arteta recently confirmed that Smith-Rowe will “100 percent” be staying in north London this summer despite strong interest from Villa.

Smith-Rowe, who doesn’t turn 21 until later this month, caught the eye following several outstanding performances for Arsenal since breaking into the Gunners first-team on Boxing Day.

He scored twice and chipped in with four assists in just 18 Premier League starts during his breakthrough season with his boyhood club, where he looks set to stay following recent contract talks.

Asked whether the deal is now dead in the water, Hatfield told The Transfer Tavern:

“It does represent a significant blow.

“Until it’s signed and sealed then Villa will think there will be a way to work their way into it, but with the confidence that Arteta has come out and said he’s 100 percent staying, it does make you think the new deal is pretty much agreed now, and they’re waiting to announce.”

Harbhajan, Sehwag spoil Essex's day

Command performances from Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag have put India into an unassailable position going into the final day of their tour match at Chelmsford

Ralph Dellor16-Aug-2002Command performances from Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag have put India into an unassailable position going into the final day of their tour match at Chelmsford. Harbhajan finished with seven for 83 as Essex were dismissed for 279 in their first innings, and by the close a century from Sehwag had extended India’s lead to 468.Harbhajan, who already had two wickets overnight, pulled in regular additions to his haul this morning. First the crucial scalp of Andy Flower, caught by Sourav Ganguly for 59, then Jon Dakin, caught behind for four, and another big wicket – Essex skipper Ronnie Irani – caught by Ratra for 20. Barry Hyam and James Middlebrook followed, and when Sehwag bowled Joe Grant for 30 to end the innings, the hosts had conceded a lead of 237.Things briefly looked up for Essex when India’s young wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel, promoted to open, was caught by Timothy Phillips off Mark Ilott for one, but after that it was all India. Sehwag joined Sanjay Bangar in a partnership of 209 for the second wicket, to which Bangar contributed only 69. Sehwag made 142 (156 balls, five sixes, 18 fours) before hitting a return catch to Ravinder Bopara.
