Sensação do Flamengo faz gol de peito e time elimina o Cruzeiro

Robin Singh to lead India B

Santhosh S10-Feb-2001Robin Singh is to lead the India B team in the Hero Honda NKP SalveChallenger Series, to be played in Chennai from February 12 to 15.According to Chandu Borde, the chairman of the selection committee,”Tendulkar will contribute as a player and as he has alwaysmaintained, he does not wish to lead. Robin Singh’s vast internationalexperience as well as the fact that he has been the captain of TamilNadu for a long time was the main factors in choosing him over theothers”. The selectors did discuss about other possible candidates, including Punjab captain Vikram Rathour, who will be keeping wicketsfor India B.At the conditioning camp at the IIT-Chemplast ground on Saturday, theplayers were put through an intensive fielding session, followed bysome open nets. The probables took to the field to play an impromptumatch under the watchful eyes of the coach John Wright. Borde who didthe umpiring, helped himself to a “closer look” at the probables.Left-arm spinner Venkatpathy Raju was giving it all, diving to hisleft and right. Nayan Mongia who kept the wickets with his usual élan, had a nice outing with the bat too, possibly bettering his chance of arecall into the national side.Interestingly enough, former India leg spinner from Tamil Nadu, LSivaramakrishnan received a call from the Indian camp last evening andwas at the nets, bowling to Tendulkar. It may be recalled that justprior to the visit of the Australians in 1998, Tendulkar had made asimiliar request so that he could gain valuable practice and work outa strategy in tackling Shane Warne. The physiotherapist of the national team Andrew Leipus, spoke to thepress for a brief time. He is more than happy with the fitness levelsof the ‘core India’ players. He sounded bit apprehensive about thenewcomers who are not familiar with the training regime.Leipus sounded positive about Kumble’s recovery. “Kumble should be fitto play in another four to six months time. He is doing a lot ofhydrobics, which is basically swimming and exercise in the pool totone up the shoulder muscle”.

QPR handed boost in Marcondes pursuit

Queens Park Rangers have been dealt a huge boost to their hopes of bringing Emiliano Marcondes to the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by The Independent, who claim that Brentford are set to release the 26-year-old attacking midfielder at the end of his current contract at the Brentford Community Stadium, which is due to expire at the end of the month.

This could potentially open the door for QPR to reignite their reported January interest in the former Denmark U21 international, as he will be available to sign on a free transfer in the coming weeks.

Warburton must move

Considering how regularly Marcondes featured for Thomas Frank’s promotion-winning Brentford side last season, the news that the club plan to release the midfielder this summer comes as somewhat surprising news.

However, this should not bother Mark Warburton in the slightest, as the 26-year-old would appear to be an excellent addition to the 58-year-old’s attacking arsenal at QPR ahead of their upcoming Championship campaign.

Indeed, over his 31 league appearances – only 12 of which came as starts – for Brentford last season, Marcondes scored one goal, registered two assists and created three big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 0.8 shots and making 0.7 key passes per game.

While these would by no means appear to be mind-blowing returns, when taking into account the £2.52m-rated man only featured for an average of 44 minutes per fixture, his metrics are rather impressive, with the 26-year-old earning a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.75.

As such, with the potential of playing more minutes, and subsequently returning a greater number of goals and assists, if a move to QPR were to come off, the versatile £12k-per-week forward could well prove an extremely astute piece of business for Warburton to get over the line this summer – as the Rs manager bids to build a side capable of mounting a push for the play-off places next season.

And, with the player Frank dubbed “remarkable” having scored the goal in the play-off final that all but secured Premier League football for Brentford next season, perhaps Marcondes could go on to repeat the feat with QPR next term.

In other news: Huge transfer update emerges on “immense” £5.4k-p/w gem that’ll leave QPR fans gutted

Was Sir Paul Condon at Eden Park? Central win likely

The fact that Sir Paul Condon, head of the International Cricket Council match-fixing investigation team, will be in Auckland tomorrow should not interfere with a thrilling, if arranged, finish to the Auckland-Central Districts Shell Trophy match at

Don Cameron14-Feb-2001The fact that Sir Paul Condon, head of the International Cricket Council match-fixing investigation team, will be in Auckland tomorrow should not interfere with a thrilling, if arranged, finish to the Auckland-Central Districts Shell Trophy match at the Eden Park Outer Oval. After some arrangements which might be interpreted, depending on the viewpoint, as a gentleman’s agreement or collusion between the two skippers, Auckland will be looking for close to 400 runs, and Central 10 wickets in pursuit of victory tomorrow.Central could end with six points, and keep their Trophy hopes alive, while Auckland could have four points and put a prideful swell on their chests. The mere details of the day were that Central Districts declared their first innings at 397 for six, their overnight total, and then Andrew Schwass led such a brilliant bowling attack that he had the first four Auckland wickets for two runs, and the home side slid to 42 for five, 44 for six and 65 for seven. Then a gallant rearguard action, led by Reece Young, the 21-year-old wicket-keeper batting at No 9, led to Young scoring a totally splendid century and figuring in a 104-run stand for the ninth wicket with Chris Drum (30).This led Auckland to a modest 224 for eight wickets by tea, Central 173 runs ahead, when Dion Nash, the Auckland skipper, closed his innings – obviously safe in the knowledge Spearman would not impose the 150-run follow-on.Instead Spearman led the Central second innings in a blistering assault which brought him 61, David Kelly 85 not out and Mathew Sinclair 32 not out in the Central second innings of 192 for one wicket in the 28 overs before stumps. So Central finished 365 runs in profit and, with a minimum of 100 overs available tomorrow (less three for some possible change of innings) Spearman will have plenty of time to attack the erratic Auckland batting line.In fact, Spearman could declare overnight, and hope for some early-morning help for his bowlers from a pitch covered and sweating under Auckland’s recent run of 98 per cent humidity. This ploy worked superbly this morning when, after Brent Hefford had conceded a run in the first over, Andrew Schwass took three wickets in the next over. He soon had another, opening figures of 3-0-3-4, first-spell details of 7-3-5-4, five wickets for 13 and eventually five for 53.Schwass is a 26-year-old expert at doing the simple things right – bowling a brisk medium, a tight length, accurate direction and let the swing and seam of the ball do the nasty work. He looked so innocent in what became a St Valentine’s Day massacre of the Auckland innings. Some of the life had gone from the pitch and the ball – it became a very hot afternoon – by the time Young (with noble assistance from the rest of the tail) led Auckland some way out of the wilderness.Like Schwass, Young did not become over-ambitious. He kept out the dangerous balls, nudged the good ones for ones and twos, and with his confidence growing hit out boldly over the last half of his heroic 143-minute tour to the first century of his 11-match first class career.Along the way Young hit 17 fours and finished his century from 95 to 101 not out with the suitable splendour of a six over mid-wicket. Drum deserved warm praise for his diligent defence, and the occasional murderous whack of the ball to, and twice over, the boundary. Not surprisingly Spearman, Kelly and Sinclair raced along at a run-a-ball clip in the gloaming, not hindered by a rather cosy new-ball attack, and then helped materially when Blair Pocock and Richard King contributed seven convivial overs from which Central extracted 64 runs.Things became a little more rigorous later in the afternoon, and perhaps Spearman may be tempted to give Auckland all tomorrow to scored the runs.Whatever the questions about the wisdom, or ethics, of Nash’s declaration, the day brought 416 runs for nine wickets, following the 397 for six on the previous day.On that basis anything, and more likely a Central Districts win, could happen tomorrow.

Temos jogadores a observar ainda – resumiu o técnico, no sábado.

Sunderland handed Dion Sanderson boost

Sunderland have been handed a boost in their quest to sign Dion Sanderson permanently this summer, following an update regarding his future.

The Lowdown: Sanderson impresses for Sunderland

The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light from Wolves, catching the eye as the Black Cats reached the League One playoffs.

Sanderson made 26 appearances in the league overall, slotting into the defence impressively and being lauded by the fans for the impact he made, with supporters revealing their ‘love’ for the youngster and asking to sign him permanently.

The Latest: Black Cat given boost

Those fans will be delighted now, as Sunderland are thought to be keen on signing Sanderson permanently this summer and a positive update has emerged this weekend.

According to Yorkshire Live, talks over a Sanderson move to Huddersfield Town aren’t as far along as some have claimed, acting as a boost to the Black Cats.

The report names Sunderland as one of many clubs chasing a deal, revealing that the Terriers are now unlikely to be part of that competition, which is a boost for those still hoping to secure his signature.

The Verdict: Sign him permanently

Sanderson did enough during his loan spell to suggest he should be signed permanently ahead of next season, especially considering Wolves appear happy to cash in.

At 21, he is a player with a bright future who should only improve in the coming years, with an average of 2.7 clearances per game in the league last season outlining his defensive ability.

Lee Johnson will be keen for new signings in the summer transfer window, in order for another promotion push to materialise, and signing Sanderson would be ideal – he knows the club, has proven his mettle and his arrival would excite the fans.

In other news, one Sunderland player has reportedly been offered an exit route out of the club. Find out who it is here.

Auckland attack plundered as Outer Oval hoodoo continues

Don Cameron13-Feb-2001Central Districts who last month rubbed Auckland’s noses in the Eden Park Outer Oval dirt by dismissing them for 73 in a Shell Cup game, put the home side through another form of torture by scoring 397 for six wickets on the first playing day of their Shell Trophy match today.Auckland made Central Districts bat first on a pitch that might have played tricks after the rain which stopped any play on the first day.It was a gamble that went hugely wrong as Craig Spearman led a blistering CD batting charge with 96, Mathew Sinclair maintained the free-scoring pressure with 145, and Ben Smith (57) and Glen Sulzberger (34) played brisk cameos as the weary Auckland bowlers tried to stem the flood of runs.Only in the last hour, when Auckland dismissed Sulzberger, Mark Douglas and Sinclair at a cost of 16 runs, did the home bowlers appear to have any bite or accuracy in their attack. And after gambling that their apparently potent seam attack of Chris Drum, Kyle Mills and Andre Adams would do the early damage while the pitch was dampish, it was little consolation to the Aucklanders that of the last four CD wickets to fall Blair Pocock got one, Adams two and the leg spinner Brooke Walker one.The pitch did have some early life and the new ball did swerve a little, but the Auckland new ball bowlers (once Drum had winkled out David Kelly at 22 for one) did not have the speed nor accuracy to make the most of the helpful conditions. And while the ball did swing, the Aucklanders could not generate any sharp pace, and too often the Central batsmen could let the occasional good ball pass wide down the off side, safe in the knowledge that soon the supply of half volleys and long-hops would resume.Aucklanders should know their former team-mate Spearman can hammer good bowling and murder anything that gives him a chance to play his classical cover and straight drives, and pulls and hooks to midwicket.Sinclair’s recent New Zealand one-day form has been spotty, but he was immediately into his best and confident mood today – and even then he was overshadowed by the dazzling Spearman as they scored 134 together for the second wicket in 113 minutes.Spearman seemed certain to get a hundred between lunch (the revised starting time in the 82-over day) and tea, but his first really false shot was his last – and it took a suitably brilliant catch by Adams to remove him.Spearman was going for his 18th four, and his century, when he tried to hammer Mark Haslam to the midwicket fence. But he got more edger than middle, the ball soared high and Adams, running like the wind, dived to take a superb one-handed catch as the ball came down over his shoulder. There was were few similar Auckland heroics for the rest of the day as Sinclair plundered the bowling. He did not appear as fast as Spearman (121 minutes and 91 balls for his 96) and at one stage scored three singles while Spearman smashed 60.But Sinclair’s first 50 came in 121 minutes and 70 balls, and his second from 54 balls in 54 minutes. With his typical appetite for runs, Sinclair simply surged on, and it was a measure of CD’s consistently solid scoring that the first seven 50’s of the innings came from 70, 49, 43, 65, 55, 73 and 65 balls.Unlike Spearman, Sinclair had a rather limp departure. Walker, harshly treated by Spearman earlier in the warm and often sunny day, persuaded Sinclair to make a rash charge up the pitch. The turn beat Sinclair, he evidently got a faint touch with his bat and Reece Young, the Auckland keeper was given the decision “caught,” when it otherwise would surely have read “stumped.”Should Central turn their big score into an outright win over the remaining two days they may still have the chance to challenge Wellington, Otago and Northern Districts for the winning place on the Trophy ladder.Auckland are virtually without hope, and will need a much stronger resolve if they are to avoid the kind of hammering that Central seem able to produce when they play Auckland on their home patch.
