A football manager has a lot of decisions to make, to say the least.

They must organise the training drills on a daily basis, they must keep their players happy and maintain a good level of morale throughout the squad, and crucially, they must pick the starting XI.

Some managers might complain about a lack of options, but in Roy Hodgson’s case, he has a specifically luxurious area of his squad that gives him the right kind of selection headache.

In Mamadou Sakho, James Tomkins, Gary Cahill, Martin Kelly and Scott Dann, the former England manager is blessed to have a wealth of options in his side at centre-back.

However, the first two names in that bunch have struggled with injury problems this season – Sakho has managed just three Premier League appearances, whereas Tomkins has none.

In their absence, Cahill and Kelly have shone. The duo have helped Palace concede just eight goals in eight league games, keeping the joint-most clean sheets in the division with three.

We recently put the question to Football FanCast’s writers about whether or not the impressive Kelly should keep his place when either of Sakho or Tomkins return, describing it as a ‘selection headache’ for the 72-year-old Palace boss.

If Hodgson was worried about that decision though, he can afford to put the headache on ice for another week at least after it was revealed by The Evening Standard that Sakho remains a doubt for Saturday’s game against Manchester City.

The France international missed the start of the season after needing knee surgery, and was absent for games against Norwich and West Ham with a strain that has made him a doubt for the match against the champions.

While we presume that Hodgson would prefer to have as many options available to him as possible, the dilemma that is deciding who should start at centre-back can at least be put on ice for another week.

وبسؤاله “هل أنت قلق من حصول يونايتد على العديد من ركلات الجزاء؟”، أجاب: “لا يُمكنني الحديث عن هذا الأمر، نحن نركز فقط على مباراتنا القادمة”.

وأضاف مورينيو في المؤتمر الصحفي الخاص بالمباراة: “لا أشعر بالقلق، أريد من لاعبي فريقي الذهاب إلى المباراة بمُشاعر إيجابية والاستمتاع، وأنّ يتعاملوا مع الضغط بشكل جيد، هذا ما أريده”.

وعن انتصارات توتنهام في ملعبه وما إذا كان ذلك يجعله إيجابيًا قبل مباراة الأحد: “أنا لا أبحث كثيرًا عن السجلات والأرقام، لأنه في بعض الأحيان تتعارض الأشياء مع الإحصائيات أو الميول”.

وأضاف: “أنا أذهب بثقة لأنني أؤمن بفريقي، وأؤمن بالعمل الذي نقوم به هذا الأسبوع لمحاولة الاستعداد للمباراة بأفضل ما في وسعنا، لا أريد الذهاب إلى المباراة والتفكير في أشياء أخرى، نحن جاهزون، ونعمل بشكل جيد خلال هذا الأسبوع”.

وواصل: “لأسباب خاطئة خرجنا من الدوري الأوروبي، لكن تمكنا من قضاء أسبوع للعمل، لم يكن لدينا الكثير من الوقت للاستعداد”.

وأتبع: “هذا الموسم لم يكن لدينا الكثير من الوقت، الآن لدينا ذلك، هذا يجعلني إيجابيًا وأنا أستمتع بالعمل الأسبوعي هُنا”.

وعن انتصار توتنهام 6-1 على مانشستر يونايتد في الدور الأول: “أعتقد أن هذه النتيجة لا تعكس الواقع، ما حدث يُمكن أنّ يحدث”.

وتابع: “في المباراتين السابقتين لمباراة 6-1، خسرنا 2-1 في أولد ترافورد، وتعادلنا على أرضنا في الموسم الماضي، أعتقد أنّ هذا هو الواقع، نحن لسنا بعيدين عن بعضنا البعض، لذا أعتقد أنها ستكون مباراة صعبة لكلا الفريقين”.

وأتم تصريحاته قائلًا: “إذا كان سولشاير سيستخدم هذه النتيجة، فلا أعرف، إذا كان فريقي خسر أمامهم 6-1، فسأقول فقط للاعبي فريقي إنّ ذلك حدث مرة واحدة ولن يحدث مرتين، هذا لا يعكس الواقع، ستكون المباراة صعبة ولكن نحن يمكننا الفوز”.

In our latest instalment of the Flashback series, we take a look back at a certain moment and look at how things might have changed those initial reactions.

Following Portsmouth’s 0-0 draw against Gillingham, Kenny Jackett admitted that his side had not been creative enough, as they failed to break down the opposition’s resilient defence, as reported by the club’s official website.

Ben Close and Tom Naylor were the two midfielders, and while the latter put in a solid performance, the pair did not complete a dribble between them and only made 2 key passes combined, despite having a total 19.4% of the game’s overall possession, as per WhoScored.

Considering this, they could perhaps use a midfielder who can make more of a difference in the final third – while it will not be a player of the same quality due to the fact they are now in League One, there will be those at Pompey wishing for someone to come in and have a similar impact to Pedro Mendes’ in 2006.

With Pompey struggling in the Premier League, the Portuguese midfielder was signed in a £7m deal, which also saw Sean Davis and Noe Pamarot move to the South Coast from Tottenham Hotspur, as reported by The Guardian at the time.

He would go on to score some very important goals that campaign, with the first two of those coming in the form of a brace in a 2-1 win against Manchester City, which included an incredible strike that flew into the top corner from outside the box, as shown in the highlights video on the Portsmouth FC YouTube channel.

Mendes then followed that up with another strike from range, helping to earn a 4-2 victory over West Ham United, as reported by BBC Sport.

Speaking to The News Portsmouth, Mendes later recalled the strike against Man City: “When we got that winner, and the time it happened, the hope it suddenly gave to everyone was what you could pick out. There was a relief – but the most important thing was hope.”

Including the two aforementioned wins, Pompey went on to get an incredible 20 points from a possible 27, completing what has since been called The Great Escape.

It can be argued that staying up was his biggest achievement at the club because of how unlikely it seemed, but it should also be kept in mind that he was an integral part of Pompey’s FA Cup final win in 2008.

The challenges for any midfielder moving to Fratton Park will be very different to those faced by Mendes: rather than fighting to stay in the Premier League, they will need to help the club push for promotion from League One, while FA Cup finals seem a world away at the current time.

Nevertheless, with many fans bemoaning the football currently being played, there is definitely an opportunity for a midfielder who can change games to come in and be a heroic figure in blue.

Unai Emery appears to have taken a swipe at Arsene Wenger while defending his record at Arsenal, per Eurosport.

What’s he said?

The former PSG boss has come under increased scrutiny this week following the club’s disappointing 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United on Monday.

Asked about his record on Wednesday during a press conference, however, Emery pointed to the state the Gunners were in when he arrived following the departure of Arsene Wenger.

The Frenchman took the club to sixth in his final season, reached the third round of FA Cup, while they were runners-up in the Carabao Cup and reached the semi-finals of the Europa League. Emery, in his first season, improved their league finish to fifth, reached the fourth round of the FA Cup, the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup and took them to the final of the Europa League, where they were beaten by Chelsea.

He said: “Sometimes we forget the memory and we need to remember. “When I arrived here, this team needed to improve being more competitive.

“This team in the history was winning 1-0 and being very competitive, but it wasn’t enough. Then one process being competitive and with improved creativity.

“When I arrived here, the creativity is more or less good, but being competitive was worse. It was not enough. ‘I think last year I started to improve being competitive, also more or less creativity with some very good matches playing with that creativity.

“Last year we did not achieve, we were in the table by one point and in the Europa League final and we lost in the end. And OK, we were there. And this year – be there and take it.”

Tangible rewards

Arsenal need something to show for their supposed improvement.

Emery might well be right, in the sense that Wenger oversaw the club’s fall from being genuine title contenders to perennial top-four challengers.

But if he is going to take a swipe at a manager who won three Premier League titles during his time in north London, he needs to have some tangible trophies to show for himself too.

This season, the Gunners are fighting on four fronts and if Emery is to back up his words, he needs to win one of those competitions.

One has to feel that the Premier League is out of the question so it may well be the cup competitions on which he has to rely.

Ironically enough, Wenger won seven FA Cups too.

Emery has a long way to go to match that legacy.

الأمور تشير إلى أن لايبزيج سيستسلم في النهاية، ولكن الرغبة لدى النادي الألماني، هي الاحتفاظ بـ كوناتي على الأقل حتى صيف العام المقبل.

It’s like we’re playing a big game of Cluedo.

Everyone is trying to work out exactly what is going wrong at Nottingham Forest as they came crashing down to earth from their ten-game unbeaten run to now losing two matches in a row.

Former Forest man Kenny Burns has had his say on the matter and he thinks that it’s down to the absence of one man.

What’s he said?

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Burns believes that it’s in fact captain Michael Dawson that the cub have been missing the most, and that his partnership with Joe Worrall was one of the bedrocks of the club’s unbeaten run:

“Michael Dawson has been a big miss for Nottingham Forest. If he does come back from injury this week, it will be a huge boost for us. Dawson and Joe Worrall had been really good together as a partnership.

“They’d developed a strong relationship in the centre of the defence. I think we’d looked more solid when those two were playing together – and keeping more clean-sheets is something we need to do. I think we’ve missed Dawson’s leadership as well. He’s a proper captain.”

Time for someone else to step up?

There have been many factors that you can blame on Nottingham Forest’s recent slump, and the injuries that have hit the squad are certainly one of them.

But it’s the point about captaincy that raises a bit of a concern.

If they really are missing his captaincy and leadership skills on the pitch, isn’t that a little bit of an indictment on the rest of the players in the squad?

Does it suggest there is nobody there who is up to marshalling the troops? Isn’t one of the clichés in football that you want ‘eleven captains on the pitch’?

Indeed Burns himself said last month that he saw Dawson’s centre-back partner Worrall as a future captain of the club, but if he hasn’t managed to step up in the central defender’s absence, what sort of standard is he setting if he wants to get the job on a permanent basis in the future?

So whilst the armband might be with 34-year-old Ben Watson when Dawson is missing, perhaps it’s time Worrall stepped forward and showed us what he’s made of because it’s not just the results that are on the line, but also his candidacy for the job next season.

وعن فرص روما أمام مانشستر يونايتد وتكافؤ الفرص، أكد دجيكو: “إذا كنا في الدور نصف النهائي، فبالتأكيد يمكننا ذلك، من المؤكد أنه لم يكن طريقًا سهلاً، كانت مواجهات براجا وشاختار دونيتسك وأياكس صعبة”.

واستطرد: “الآن نواجه اسمًا كبيرًا آخر، لكن روما اسم كبير أيضًا، ويجب أن نبذل قصارى جهدنا للوصول إلى النهائي”.

لقد كان موسمًا صعبًا لدجيكو، الذي تم تجميده في يناير بعد خلاف مع المدرب فونسيكا وعاد للمشاركة بعد ذلك، لكنه جرد من شارة القائد.

واستكمل: “من الصعب التفكير في ذلك الآن، لدينا مباراة نصف نهائية قادمة والدوري الإيطالي أيضًا، لذلك سنرى في النهاية”.

وعن جلوسه بديلاً لفترة، أوضح دجيكو: “كان الأمر صعبًا عندما لعبت على أعلى مستوى، كان من الصعب قبول بعض الأشياء، لكنني كنت دائمًا قويًا عقليًا ولم أكن لأصل إلى هذا الحد لو كنت ضعيفًا”.

وأتم: “هذا ما جعلني أواجه هذا الموقف، الشيء المهم هو روما وليس شارة القيادة أو إدين دجيكو، وليس أي شخص”.

Leeds moved back into the top two with an impressive win over QPR on Saturday.

The Whites were rather impressive, and many would have been very happy with the performance, but there’s one man who may have mixed emotions about the club’s win at Elland Road.

Indeed, Ezgjan Alioksi may be in for a spell on the sidelines in the near future as the Whites successfully trialled a new formation that doesn’t have a spot for him.

New tactic

Marcelo Bielsa utilised a new system against QPR this weekend.

As expected, the gaffer used a three at the back formation, but this time he opted not to use wing-backs.

Indeed, the Argentine opted to ditch his wing-backs in favour of an extra midfielder and a number ten as he used more of a 3-1-2-3-1 rather than his famed 3-3-1-3.

That may sound a little complicated, but this is Bielsa we’re talking about.

Alioski out of favour

After the Whites’ success on Saturday, this system may be used more often by the 64-year-old, and that may mean that the £4m-rated Alioski finds himself on the bench over the next few weeks.

Jack Harrison did a soild job of marshalling the left side of the pitch all by himself against the London club as he made as many tackles as Ben White and Liam Cooper, while also being the only player for Leeds to block a shot.

That was as well as scoring and assisting a goal too.

The winger showed that Bielsa can comfortably use a system that doesn’t utilise wing-backs while not actually losing any defensive capabilities.

That means that Alioski’s spot in the squad is under fire as the need for a wing-back is no longer there in games that the manager wants to utilise a three at the back formation.

وقال توخيل في تصريحات نشرتها صحيفة “إندبندنت” الإنجليزية: “بشكل شخصي أتمنى أن يتواجد كوفاسيتش أمام فولهام (1 مايو المقبل)، لا نأخذ الأمر كشيء مُسلم به، أو أنها نصيحة طبية، هو مجرد رأي شخصي”.

وأضاف الألماني: “أعتقد أنه من الممكن أن يعود ضد فولهام، بين مباراتي ريال مدريد، مباراتنا أمام مدريد (الذهاب) باتت قريبة، هو لم يتدرب مع الفريق، لدينا غدًا مباراة ثم يومين تحضير لمواجهة مدريد، بدون تدريب لن يحدث ذلك (مشاركته)”.

وواصل: “نأمل أن تكون مشاركته أمام فولهام هدفًا واقعيًا”.

وكانت آخر مباراة شارك فيها كوفاسيتش خلال مواجهة كريستال بالاس يوم 10 أبريل الحالي، وغاب منذ ذلك الوقت عن مباريات بورتو ومانشستر سيتي وبرايتون.

Leeds United fans have been in awe of Tyler Roberts after the club’s official Twitter account shared a clip of a goal he scored in training.

You can understand why the fanbase were all buzzing as the Welshman bagged a volley from just outside the box with pinpoint accuracy.

The Whites have struggled to score in recent weeks, netting more than once in just one of their previous eight matches, but with Roberts scoring against QPR last Saturday it seems as if he could hit a bit of form in front of goal.

This strike he netted in training would be good enough to win any team’s Goal of the Season award, but it’s just a shame that it was netted at Thorp Arch rather than at Elland Road.

That hasn’t stopped fans getting excited about it though, as social media was flooded with supporters paying tribute to the youngster after this goal.
