Rangers: Gerrard should forget Jake Hastie and nurture Middleton instead

Rangers need to build a squad of young talent for the future, but promoting youth from within should be how the club do this. Frankly, Glenn Middleton’s career will stall if Jake Hastie comes to Ibrox next season.

Middleton has been bright this season and has looked comfortable when he’s been called upon, even in the Europa League. His two goals and three assists from 14 goals appearances demonstrate the potential he has if he gets more game time next term.

However, the 19-year-old could see his development stunted by the purchase of Motherwell winger Jake Hastie. The 21-year-old has made 41 appearances for his side this season, including 19 in the league, scoring 11 goals, according to Transfermarkt. As a result, Football Insider reckon Rangers are after him.

He’s out of contract at the end of the season, so he’d be brought in for free, but that doesn’t mean the signing is risk-free. If he’s brought in it would mean Middleton has another more senior player ahead of him in the pecking order and he might see that as his cue to move on.

Rangers aren’t exactly blessed with huge money, so when there is an opportunity comes for a young player to break through and make the first-team regularly, Steven Gerrard should make the most of it. It sends a poor message to the rest of the youth team if he doesn’t, and that could be costly in the long term.

Gerrard must think carefully about signing Hastie, because even though he’s clearly an exciting talent, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. He should stick with Middleton and let him continue what he’s started this season.

Gelson Martins is exactly the winger Everton need this summer

What a run of form this is! Marco Silva and his Everton players are working wonders right now and, therefore, all deserve immense credit for how they’ve turned their season around. Thank the high heavens for that, with the Portuguese looking worth the hassle at last.

The Toffees, only a matter of weeks ago, were coming to terms with the fact they would be without Europa League football again next season, only to win four of their last five games.

Now their aspirations of finishing seventh are coming to life and understandably, you fans must be delighted.

They will be the first bunch to admit they weren’t sure about Marco Silva initially but now he has turned it around, surely everyone can see why the owners waited so long just to bring him in as manager.

With that in mind, next season will arguably be his most important, as the right signings could see Everton really improve their fortunes.

One player they were previously linked (as per the Telegraph) with was Gelson Martins, who worked with Silva in the Portuguese capital at an earlier point in his career. Despite not getting him initially, the club should seriously consider moving for the Portuguese winger yet again this summer.

Martins, (who is valued at £25.2 million on Transfermarkt) has been productive during his short stay at Monaco so far, going onto provide three goals and an assist. The 23-year-old has been with a number of good teams throughout his career but a permanent move to Everton could be his most sensible move yet.

A young team looking to grow and bring goals to the team, he’s surely a much more exciting option than the likes of Theo Walcott, potentially linking up with the likes of Bernard and Richarlison to create one of the most varied attacks in the Premier League at Goodison Park.

Everyone knows the striker problems in play at Everton, so attempting to bring goals from more areas of the pitch would be a much smarter option than going for another Cenk Tosun.

With the potential to become a regular fixture in their starting line-up, Gelson Martins could really kick-start his career in the best league of them all.

Do you agree that Gelson Martins would make a good signing for Everton… Join the discussion and let us know!

The Chalkboard: Huddersfield must learn from transfer mistakes under David Wagner

[ad_pod ]

Huddersfield’s failings on the pitch this season can easily be attributed to their errors off the pitch before the campaign even began.

In an interview with the Examiner, Town’s chief executive Julian Winter revealed that a lack of communication between the manager and the board led to an ineffective transfer window.

Wasted transfers

The main takeaway from the interview was that David Wagner had been provided with signings that didn’t suit the style of play he wanted to utilise going forward.

The men in charge of transfers at the John Smith’s Stadium recruited based on the system that kept the Terriers up in the 2017/18 season. Their main targets were fast, tricky wingers that would be able to provide service for target men such as Steve Mounie and Laurent Depoitre.

Unfortunately for the board, Wagner was planning on changing his style of play, and failure to communicate that with the higher-ups meant that he was left with a group of players who didn’t suit his philosophy going forward.

Winter said: “From a football perspective we had the idea of doing what we do better and recruiting players into that system.

“David (Wagner) decided to change the system, and I think we lost a little bit of our identity if I am honest with you.”

Can’t make the same mistakes

It is an absolute shambles that nobody from the transfer team liaised with Wagner ahead of Town’s second season in the Premier League.

It was a case of square pegs in round holes once the season kicked off and from that point onwards the Yorkshire club were doomed.

They can’t afford to repeat this error ahead of Jan Siewert’s first full season in charge. They must have a meeting as soon as possible with the German and establish what he wants to do on the pitch, then go out and make signings to accommodate that system.

There’s no use in signing players who don’t fit a system, no matter how good they may be. It is amateurish for Huddersfield to have made such a schoolboy error, and they must now change their ways as they prepare for life back in the Championship.

Hard to watch: Palace fans are sad after Julian Speroni’s last training video emerges

[ad_pod ]Crystal Palace fans on Twitter are feeling the pain of Julian Speroni’s departure, and have expressed their sadness after watching a video of the club legend’s last ever training session with his teammates.

It was announced last week that the Argentinian glovesman would be departing Selhurst Park after 15 years in SE25, following a record-breaking spell with the Eagles that will live long in the memory of the club’s fanbase.

Is the FA Cup distracting Crystal Palace fans from their EPL issues? Playmaker FC’s Sam thinks so in the video below…

The 39-year-old, a four-time winner of the club’s Player of the Season award, has made a whopping 405 appearances for Palace – the fourth most of any player in their history.

Speroni has also kept a club-record 112 clean sheets, and has racked up the most appearances of any goalkeeper since the formation of the south London outfit.

The former Dundee man is regarded as a hero by Palace fans for his loyalty, commitment and his love for the club in general, and his presence around the place will be sorely missed.

After seeing the video of his final training session, plenty of the south London club’s supporters expressed their sadness on Twitter…

Leicester’s permanent move for Tielemans could be back on if they sell Maguire

[ad_pod ]

Leicester are in danger of losing Harry Maguire this summer with Manchester City weighing up a move to make him their replacement for Vincent Kompany, per The Metro.

What’s the word?

A possible move away for Maguire has been circulating for a considerable period of time now with Manchester United showing an interest in the centre-back previously.

The 26-year-old made quite the impression at the World Cup last summer, turning in some outstanding performances which arguably were enough to warrant a move to one of the Premier League’s top clubs.

The centre-half hasn’t been as convincing this season but that doesn’t appear to have put potential suitors off.

With Kompany now leaving Man City, Pep Guardiola has lined the former Hull man to replace him according to The Metro. He could cost City a considerable fee, though. The report claims Leicester value the defender at £75m.

Tielemans deal back on?

Losing Maguire would be a monumental blow to Leicester’s aspirations but it could help fund a club record deal for Youri Tielemans.

Only last week the Foxes were put off by Monaco’s valuation of £40m and as a result, any permanent transfer for the Belgian following his loan spell looked to be off the cards.

However, if the Midlands club were to receive as big a figure as The Metro suggests, a follow-up deal for Tielemans would be an absolute steal.

Maguire seems replaceable, especially with Filip Benkovic returning from Celtic and Brendan Rodgers’ track record with the player already. Tielemans, on the other hand, is more difficult to replace with the brunt of Leicester’s deep-lying midfielders consisting of more defensive minded players.

As such, Brendan Rodgers simply has to sanction the sale of their star centre half.

It would be hard to take, but if the young Belgium international was to return it would make the King Power faithful forget all about Maguire.
