Rangers defender James Tavernier played through injury against Celtic, former Gers man Alan Hutton has told Football Insider.

The lowdown

Tavernier came off at half time as Rangers fell to a 4-0 defeat at Ajax in their Champions League opener last time out.

As per The Scottish Daily Express, there are now ‘fears’ over his fitness ahead of their second game against Napoli on Wednesday night.

Tavernier could be seen with an ice pack wrapped out his right knee as he watched on from the bench in the second half last week.

Hutton, who has frequently worked for BBC Radio 5 Live, says that Tavernier was carrying a minor issue ahead of the Old Firm.

He’s hopeful that the Englishman will return against Napoli, expressing concern about the readiness of Adam Devine or Leon King.

He said: “It’s obviously something that he could manage. I heard before the Celtic game that he was carrying a little niggle but when it starts to affect your performance I think that’s when it’s time you have to pull yourself back or the manager has to pull him back and give him the rest that he’s needed.

“Hopefully, going off the other night and then having this little period of rest is going to stand him in good stead for the next game which will be Napoli. It’s an awful big game for the likes of [Adam] Devine or Leon King to be thrown into.“

The verdict

If Tavernier can’t shake off the knock in time to face Napoli, it would be a huge blow for Rangers, who need to get some points on the board after their match-day one hammering.

The right-back is clearly a vital player for Van Bronckhorst’s side, having played every minute in the league and Champions League until his withdrawal in Amsterdam.

Across the whole squad, only Antonio Colak (seven) can better Tavernier’s tally of six goal involvements so far in 2022/23.

Indeed, he’s the most prominent creator in the side, averaging 2.8 key passes per 90 (0.5 more than his nearest challenge Ryan Kent).

Loads of Tottenham fans have been reacting to the latest transfer links, as reports in Italy named them as one of several clubs chasing former Liverpool flop Suso.

According to Corriere dello Sport, Tottenham and Arsenal are part of an array of clubs hoping to sign Suso this summer.

The 25 year-old is in contract with AC Milan until 2022, but the report from Corriere dello Sport claims that he has a €40m (about £35.3m) release clause.

The report also states that the player is happy in Milan and his current contract doesn’t expire until 2022.

Still, a £35.3m clause is very low for a player who has scored 21 goals and added 34 assists in 121 games for Milan, and of course he does have experience in the Premier League, even though his time on Merseyside wasn’t very productive.

Tottenham haven’t signed a player since January 2018, and lots of fans have been reacting to this link.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has ruled Jack Grealish out of this weekend’s Championship fixture with Stoke City.

What’s the latest?

Smith told AVTV:

“No, Saturday will come too soon for him. He’s still working very hard on the training ground. He has done bits and bobs with us.”

Villa had initially expected to have Grealish available for the clash with Stoke, but Smith has revealed that the midfielder is not yet ready to return to action.

The 23-year-old has not featured in the Championship since picking up a shin injury during the 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion in the early stages of December.

Since then, Villa have played 12 times without him in the league, winning just twice, which is an indication of his importance to the team.

That said, it is not all bad news, with Smith confirming that the Englishman has stepped up his training in recent days in a bid to return as soon as possible.

How important is Grealish to Villa?

Very, very important. Grealish’s numbers this season are not wonderful, scoring just twice and registering four assists in 21 Championship matches.

However, Villa are a different team when the midfielder plays; they are more inventive, take more risks and carry a greater threat in the final third of the field.

Smith’s side are fast running out of time if they are to make the playoffs this season, but a win at Stoke this weekend would be a big step in the right direction.

Grealish, who signed a new five-year contract with Villa in September, will then surely have an excellent chance of returning for his team’s next Championship clash at home to fellow top-six hopefuls Derby County on March 2.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed in his Southampton pre-match press conference that Marcus Rashford will “probably start” on Saturday, and the news will leave Jannik Vestergaard sweating.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the England international picked up a knock against Liverpool last weekend but given they made three first-half substitutions against the Merseyside outfit, the 21-year-old still stayed on the pitch for the entirety.

He was unable to start against Crystal Palace in midweek but was in the 18-man squad and did feature from the bench for the final 13 minutes of the 3-1 win.

Ahead of the Red Devils’ clash with Saints at Old Trafford, Solskjaer says the explosive attacker is ready to take his place on the team-sheet.

The Norwegian told manutd.com: “Rashford is fully fit now. I’ll probably start him.”

Bad news for Vestergaard?

It certainly might be, as he would have been looking forward to potentially only having to deal with Romelu Lukaku, who he is perfectly suited to given his height and lack of pace.

While the Denmark international has improved significantly since manager Ralph Hasenhuttl arrived at St Mary’s in December, there is no doubt that his lack of speed and agility means he can suffer against players like Rashford.

In the reverse fixture in December which proved to be Mark Hughes’ final one at the helm, the 26-year-old struggled as the young forward ran rings around the south coast outfit’s defence, providing two assists as well as being clattered by the giant centre-back on the right-hand side in the 51st minute.

Given Romelu Lukaku scored twice in the 3-1 win against the Eagles the likelihood is that Rashford will either replace Diogo Dalot on the right of a 4-3-3 system with Alexis Sanchez on the left, or he will partner the Belgium international up top.

Whichever happens Vestergaard will be sweating to come up against an unpredictable and quick player he simply isn’t built to effectively defend against, and he will need help from the likes of left wing-back Ryan Bertrand.

وانفرجت المفاوضات بين مسئولي الزمالك وباتشيكو بعدما كان هناك مبالغة في طلباته المادية في البداية.

وأوضح المصدر أنه من المفترض أن يكون اليوم هو المرحلة الأخيرة من اختيار المدرب الجديد لسرعة تجهيز حضوره إلى القاهرة سواء كان باتشيكو أو كالديرون.

It has been well over a year since Michael Emenalo left Chelsea, leaving the club without an official technical director.

Since then, Roman Abramovich’s right-hand woman Marina Granovskaia has been overseeing player recruitment with quite a few underwhelming deals sanctioned under her watch.

The Blues, though, could finally be about to step up their search for a permanent successor to Emenalo in a potentially huge development for the club.

The Breakdown

According to France Football (via Sport Witness), Chelsea have spoken to Luis Campos about taking up the role with other clubs also said to be interested in his services.

Campos, who currently holds a similar position to the one Chelsea are willing to offer, has not had the most successful of times at Lille.

However, his track record still remains a strong one having helped assemble the AS Monaco team that went on to win the 2017 Ligue 1 title with the likes of Bernardo Silva and Kylian Mbappe starring.

Ultimately, it is that sort of eye for talent Chelsea need with some of the signings the club have made in recent transfer windows being absolutely atrocious.

The likes of Davide Zappacosta and Danny Drinkwater, for example, have failed to make the cut at Stamford Bridge, leaving question marks surrounding the west London club’s recruitment strategy — even during Emenalo’s tenure.

A transfer ban handed by FIFA complicates things in some aspects, but Chelsea would be foolish not to go all out for Campos and carry on with their same unconvincing regime.

Loads of Rangers fans have been reflecting on Tuesday’s defeat, and something the club posted on Twitter after the match has really riled them up.

Rangers fell to defeat at Ibrox for just the second time under Steven Gerrard on Tuesday, and once again it was at the hands of Aberdeen.

The sides were playing their sixth meeting this season, and goals from Niall McGinn and Connor McLennan were enough to send the Dons through to the Scottish Cup semi-final, where they will face Celtic.

McGinn’s goal was particularly poor from the home side’s perspective, as the Reds ace simply nicked a square pass from Glen Kamara on the edge of the Rangers box, skipped past a defender and slammed it home.

While Derek McInnes’ side deserve credit for their performance, the Ibrox faithful are understandably fuming at what was a lifeless display from their side.

They are particularly disappointed by the apparent lack of leadership in the team, as key figures like James Tavernier and Connor Goldson are not leading from the back as expected.

Jermain Defoe, who came on with the score already at 2-0, gave the post-match interview, which is surely the responsibility of players like Tavernier.
