O torcedor é o combustível deste time.

Zimbabwe clinch last-ball thriller after Madhevere hat-trick

Shariz Ahmad’s maiden five-for in vain as Netherlands fall short by one run

In a match that ebbed and flowed right till the final ball, Zimbabwe held their nerve to beat Netherlands by one run in the second ODI in Harare. The win helped them level the three-match series 1-1.Batting first, fifties from Sean Williams and Clive Madande kept Zimbabwe chugging along, but legspinner Shariz Ahmad’s maiden five-wicket haul saw the hosts lose their last five wickets in just 47 runs and be bowled out for 271.In reply, Netherlands were on course for a big chunk of the game with Max’O Dowd and Tom Cooper leading the way. Wessly Madhevere, though, turned the game on its head with a hat-trick – the third by a Zimbabwe bowler in ODIs.With Netherlands requiring 19 in the final over and just one wicket in hand, Zimbabwe seemed to have the game in the bag. But Tendai Chatara went for 15 runs off his first five balls to cause a few flutters. However, with four needed off the last ball, Fred Klaassen was unable to dispatch a low full toss past wide long-off.Earlier, Zimbabwe started well with Craig Ervine and Madhevere adding 61 in 11 overs for the opening stand before the former was cleaned up by Colin Ackermann for 39 off 42. Gary Ballance struck three fours but was dismissed for 14. Shariz then got into the act, getting rid of Madhevere and Sikandar Raza in the space of three balls to stifle Zimbabwe. In his next over, the legspinner induced a top edge of Ryan Burl’s blade to make it 120 for 5.Williams and Madande revived the innings by adding 104 runs off 93 balls for the sixth wicket. Williams struck 77 off 73 balls, while Madande hit his second successive half-century. But Shariz struck back. He first removed Williams, who top-edged a sweep to deep-backward square leg, and two balls later trapped Brad Evans lbw to complete his five-for.O’Dowd gave Netherlands a quick start even though his opening partner Vikramjit Singh managed only 14 off 25. O’Dowd and Cooper then kept the Zimbabwe bowlers at bay for 25.2 overs, adding 125 runs for the second wicket. But then Cooper was run-out, and a few overs later, Raza had O’Dowd lbw.But it was Madhevere’s three strikes that put Zimbabwe ahead. In the 44th over of the innings, he first had Ackermann stumped for 28. With his next ball, a quick offbreak, he castled opening ODI’s hero Teja Nidamanuru before claiming his hat-trick with a similar fast offspinning delivery that rattled Paul van Meekeren stumps.Madhevere’s hat-trick left Netherlands struggling at 213 for 6. With the required rate rising every over, captain Scott Edwards tried his best to take his side closer to the target. He struck 36 off 28 balls before falling to Raza. Raza would have thought he had all but sealed the game when he removed Musa Ahmed as well three balls later.Klaassen and Ryan Klein, though, made the Zimbabwe camp very nervous in the final over but failed to close the game.

Aamer Jamal leads stunning Peshawar Zalmi fightback to knock Islamabad United out

Babar Azam was the star with the bat, hitting 64 off 39 to give Zalmi 183 to work with

Danyal Rasool16-Mar-2023

Babar Azam plays a shot during his half-century•PCB

Peshawar Zalmi were the side with the weakest death bowling, Islamabad United the team with the most fearsome power hitting. United were the imperious chasers, while just last week, Zalmi failed to defend 240 against already-eliminated Quetta Gladiators. The data, as Shadab Khan almost didactically likes to point out United operate by, all pointed to a United win, especially when fifties from Alex Hales and Sohaib Maqsood put their side 56 runs away with six overs and nine wickets to go. But, in defence of 183, Zalmi’s bowlers produced a monumental comeback, a masterclass of yorker bowling from Salman Irshad and Aamer Jamal battering down United’s defences. As the yellow storm surged, United were left high and dry, in the end falling comfortably short of the target by 13 runs.United had opted to chase, flying in the face of the partiality Gaddafi Stadium has shown this season to the side batting first; all six matches until tonight had been won by the defenders. But Shadab’s decision looked to be paying dividends when Hales and Maqsood struck up a magnificent second wicket partnership, accumulating 115 runs in 77 balls. Maqsood’s targeting of Azmatullah Omarzai was the catalyst after he smashed two fours and a six in the fourth over, and Alex Hales tore Wahab Riaz apart in the over that followed, plundering 18 of it. By the end of the powerplay, they had put together 67, and were on track.Zalmi continued to appear toothless as the field spread out, and the game looked set to be one of those clinics United put on every now and then. The stand was chanceless, and even Mujeeb ur Rehman found himself copping punishment by his final over as Babar Azam looked to be running out of cards to play.In fact, he, and Zalmi, had been holding out their best for last. Jamal bowled a toe-crushing yorker to burst through Maqsood’s defences. Yorker bowling suddenly became contagious, with Salman Irshad repeating the feat to see off Azam Khan cheaply, before Jamal saved his best for last, a peach that Hales had no answer to.While the toes were being threatened, Islamabad also lost their heads. A run borne of muddled thinking brought about Faheem’s run-out at the non-striker’s end and, all of a sudden, the runscoring trickled to a halt. It didn’t help that Colin Munro chose this moment to have his worst PSL game in ages, unable to find timing on anything before he fell for a limp nine-ball four.United were done by now, needing 24 off the final over. Against such quality, the very notion they might get close was fanciful, with Jamal duly closing out with United 13 runs away. The wheels for the Zalmi win, as Shadab pointed out post-match, had been set in motion in the first ten overs of the game, when Babar and Saim Ayub took the attack to United’s bowlers. The first nine balls saw six boundaries scored as Babar and Saim split them, and the 50 was brought up inside four overs. Shadab lamented the lack of intensity from his side, but with Ayub in sizzling form and Babar toying with the field, it was difficult to see what United could do. When Muhammad Waseem removed Saim, Haseebullah duly took his place, as Babar brought up a 28-ball 50 at the other end.Crucially, he didn’t slow down after the first six overs, and with Mohammad Haris at the other end, there was no respite for United. By 13 overs, Zalmi had soared to 137 before United’s bowlers finally turned things their way. Shadab was expensive, but changed momentum by trapping Babar in front, before Haris’ departure dragged Zalmi back. The final five overs saw just three boundaries scored as United established control, and a Zalmi side who had been on track for over 200 limped to 183.It didn’t look like it might be enough, and all the data suggested it wouldn’t be once Hales and Maqsood sunk their teeth into the chase. But Jamal, and Zalmi found something special in the moments that mattered, conjuring up a stirring finish to rip up all scripts and spreadsheets.

David Warner battles badly bruised hand for half-century

Batter to have injury reassessed after second Test but was never in doubt to play

Andrew McGlashan28-Jun-2023David Warner battled through the pain of a badly bruised hand at Lord’s and will have the injury reassessed after the match although was never in doubt to play this game.Warner has taken multiple blows on his hands in recent weeks, including from Mohammed Shami in the World Test Championship and more recently against throwdowns from batting coach Michael Di Venuto in the nets, while he is also carrying a bruised palm from catching. However, his 66 off 88 balls was vital in setting Australia a strong platform after being sent in at Lord’s on an overcast day although he did survive a chance to slip when Ollie Pope spilled him on 20 off Stuart Broad.Related

“It’s copped a battering the last two games, and in the nets, so it’s little bit sore at the moment, bit of a bruise but I’ll just see how we go after the game and I think we’ll examine it then,” Warner said. “At the moment it’s quite tender.”[I was] never in doubt, [but] it was quite sore. Initially it was more in the palm, I’ve got a hotspot where my thumb is and every time the ball hits the bat it just jars. Then today I got hit back in the knuckle which I think Mohammed Shami hit me [on] in that World Test Championship.”I’ve had my hand in an ice bucket all afternoon, so we’ll play it by ear and assess it after the game.”Warner’s half-century continued an encouraging first half of the England tour for him even though a major score continues to prove elusive. He made 43 in the first innings against India and 36 in the second innings at Edgbaston last week.Barring his hand injury being more serious than thought he is now certain to see out the Ashes tour and looks likely to get the Sydney farewell against Pakistan early next year that he mapped out when he arrived in the UK.David Warner acknowledges his half-century•Getty Images

“I’ve felt in total control the last six to eight months with where my game is. I’m moving into the ball, my feet are moving, not just playing with my hands,” he said.”I felt like I was onto something special in the World Test Championship final. And then last game, same thing. I feel like everything I’m putting in in the nets is actually coming out there in the middle.”I’m excited by it and I think if I can keep getting myself in and keep that momentum going with my feet, a big one could be around the corner.”Warner even twice attempted to sweep Broad from outside off stump, something he has been working on in the nets. “With the white ball I play it quite a bit,” he said. “Always said in the back of my mind if they set a field where the guy was squarer and they try to hit their lengths then I’d play it. It is risky, but in the back of my mind I’m trying to put them off their line and length.”

Heartbreak for Ghosh as Capitals qualify for playoffs in thriller

RCB fall short by one run, meaning Gujarat Giants also stay just alive

Vishal Dikshit10-Mar-20243:14

Takeaways: Jemimah Rodrigues 2.0 powers Delhi Capitals

The WPL dished out a scintillating thriller for the third night in a row to cap off a bumper weekend that saw a second team – Delhi Capitals – seal a knockout berth after Mumbai Indians did the same on Saturday night. Richa Ghosh, however, couldn’t replicate what Harmanpreet Kaur did for Mumbai because despite her belligerent 51 off 29, Royal Challengers Bangalore still fell short by just one run after she and Sophie Devine had reduced the required equation from 74 off 36 balls to 40 off 18, and then two off one with Ghosh on strike.Capitals’ win means Gujarat Giants, at the bottom of the table, stay alive. Also, Capitals’ head-to-head against RCB stands at a dominating 4-0 from two seasons.Capitals were ahead in the game after dismissing Smriti Mandhana early, Ellyse Perry in the middle overs and Devine for 26 that left RCB to get 40 from 17. With Georgia Wareham’s six-ball 12 for support, Ghosh continued to find boundaries to bring it down to 17 off the last over. Ghosh started that with a disdainful six over the bowler and farmed the strike to keep going for the big hits. She belted another six on the fifth ball when RCB required eight from the last two, but couldn’t clear backward point on the last ball and failed to make her ground at the non-striker’s end despite a full-length dive.Related

A dejected Ghosh lay flat on the ground with her head buried after the run-out as the Capitals fielders celebrated around her. The result means Mumbai and Capitals are in the top two, RCB and UP Warriorz on third and fourth respectively with six points each, and Giants still in technically despite just one win from five games. The team that finishes third will claim the remaining knockout berth.Ghosh nearly does itOnce Perry was run-out for 49 at the end of the 11th over, RCB needed a stiff 93 off 54 with an out-of-form Devine joining a scratchy Sophie Molineux. Molineux soon fell for 33 off 30 and Devine would have been run out too, had the wicketkeeper Taniya Bhatia not lost the ball before breaking the stumps. With 73 to get off 34 balls, Devine laid into Radha Yadav’s left-arm spin to muscle two sixes and a four in consecutive balls to make it 57 off 30.Ghosh then went after Arundhati Reddy. The first ball off the 16th was tickled fine for four, and the last smacked all the way over the covers. Forty-five off 24 now with seven wickets in hand. The experienced Shikha Pandey brought Capitals back with a five-run over before Marizanne Kapp had Devine hole out to the longer square boundary for 26 off 16 to leave the onus on Ghosh’s shoulders. Wareham collected two fours, and Ghosh unleashed an unbelievable half-bat-open scoop on the off side fine for four, but her last-over sixes and last-ball dive wasn’t enough.RCB spinners hit the brakes after fifty opening standAfter a quiet three overs to the Capitals start, Meg Lanning tore into Renuka Singh’s second over for four fours featuring three trademark Lanning cuts and square drives in a 20-run over also including three wides. But soon after Shafali Verma took off with a six and four off WPL debutant and left-arm quick Shradda Pokharkar, the spinners but the brakes on Capitals’ charge. After Molineux bowled her first two overs for just 12, Asha Sobhana induced Shafali’s leading edge off a ripping legbreak to dismiss her for 23, and Shreyanka Patil celebrated her return to the XI by trapping Lanning lbw after the powerplay for 29.The ecstasy and the despair, all one in one frame•BCCI

Rodrigues sweeps RCB awayOn a pitch that saw some turn and consistent lack of bounce, Jemimah Rodrigues and Alice Capsey, who swapped their positions at Nos. 3 and 4, took their turns to attack. While Capsey collected two fours down the ground off Patil, Rodrigues took out her sweep. She first paddled a free hit off Pokharkar for four and then struck two fours out of the three off Molineux in the 13th over. When Georgia Wareham pitched well outside off to negate the sweep, Rodrigues exhibited glorious shots on the off side for consecutive fours, ending the 14th with a majestic inside-out six over the covers for a 26-ball fifty.Patil returns for more brakesPatil stole the show by bowling two of the last three overs. She fired in deliveries to the set batters, and after only three singles in the first four balls of the 18th, she bowled Rodrigues for 58 in a four-run over. Capsey and Marizanne Kapp, fit and back in the XI, smoked the next over for 18 runs but Patil again frustrated Capitals with her speed and stifling lines that accounted for Capsey and Jonassen to concede just five in the over and finish with 4 for 26.The Perry spice in RCB’s sedate startMandhana fell early – to an offspinner for the third time in a row – before Perry pushed the run rate with swipes for a six and four off Jonassen and two fours off a Kapp over to lead them to 42 in the powerplay. The asking rate had crossed ten, but Perry continued to collect boundaries off Jonassen, while Molineux failed to catch up with the rate.Despite getting a life on 48, Perry fell without facing another ball because she went for a non-existent single and fell short despite a full-length dive in the 11th over. Molineux holed out to Rodrigues at deep cover in the next over, and it brought together Devine and Ghosh. The duo took the chase deep and Ghosh nearly did it for her team but for one run.

Glamorgan pulled in front on day three of their Vitality County Championship match against Derbyshire after they posted 361 for seven declared to set a target of 401 for the visitors. The mainstay for Glamorgan was Chris Cooke who finished on 126 not out, by far the highest score of this match so far. He was well supported by 61 not out from James Harris and a well made 32 from Dan Douthwaite. In the 12 overs that were bowled before the close Derbyshire reached 40 for one with David Lloyd and Luis Reece undefeated. With Derbyshire still 361 runs away from their victory target a Glamorgan victory is the most likely outcome as the match heads into a final day with a mixed weather forecast.Mason Crane had come into bat as a nightwatchman late on day two and he did a good job of supporting Colin Ingram in a 45-run stand for the fifth wicket. Crane was trapped lbw by Thomson for 19 to bring the experienced pair of Ingram and Cooke together. For the first time in this match, batting started looking straightforward.Ingram was batting with great rhythm as he passed fifty from 76 balls. Shortly after reaching the milestone, he called Cooke through for a single and was sent back too late and was run out by a throw from Sam Conners. In the first two innings of the match, it was at this point that wickets had come in a hurry. Here Cooke and Douthwaite put together a partnership worth 109, the highest of the match up to that point. Cooke missed out on a chance to bat during the record-breaking efforts at Lord’s last week and he made the most of his chance in the middle in this game as he made the 13th hundred of his first-class career. After seeing the ball spin appreciably throughout the first two days, it was a lot easier going on day three, but Thomson continued to be a threat. He bowled the first 33 overs of the Glamorgan innings from the River Taff end and sent down 44 overs in total as he finished with career-best match figures of 12 for 201.Cooke was joined by Harris after Douthwaite was dismissed by Thomson to complete his second five-wicket haul of the match and Glamorgan continued to turn the screw with a second hundred-run stand in succession, eclipsing the stand by Cooke and Douthwaite as they made 116 undefeated for the eighth wicket. When the declaration came it set Derbyshire a target of 401.Harris was the man to make the one breakthrough on the third evening when he had Harry Came trapped lbw for three. As the clouds came over Sophia Gardens in the early evening it became too dark for play to continue and the players left the field with three overs unbowled. With the ball still turning on this pitch much will depend on how well Crane bowls on the final day with Glamorgan still needing nine wickets for victory.
