A gente merecia. Mas somos profissionais. A gente vai sofrer hoje ainda, mas a partir de amanhã começamos a pensar no rival. É levantar a cabeça.

Better than Merino: Arsenal must rue selling 'one of Europe's best CFs'

Mikel Arteta has had to deal with a lot at Arsenal this season.

In what really should have been the campaign in which his side finally got their hands on the Premier League title, he’s had to contend with a general drop in form and a dreadful injury crisis to his frontline.

Worse yet, instead of pushing the boat out and signing the Spaniard a new forward during the winter window, the board decided to keep their powder dry, which some saw as a white flag for the season.

Arsenal manager MikelArtetabefore the match

This chronic lack of options up top has led to Arteta playing Mikel Merino as his starting number nine, and while the summer signing has done okay, his efforts have paled in comparison to a centre-forward sold by Arsenal for a pittance last year.

Arteta's Merino experiment

If you had asked Arsenal fans who they thought would be leading the line for the team towards the backend of the season earlier in the campaign, we’d hazard a guess that precisely none would have answered Merino.

However, this is the situation the Gunners now find themselves in, and while the Spaniard will not be playing up top next season – lest another set of disastrous circumstances play out – he hasn’t been dreadful for a central midfielder anyway.

For example, he helped the team avoid an embarrassing draw away to Leicester City with a perfect header and brilliantly placed shot in his first appearance leading the line.

Moreover, he scored and assisted a goal away to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League and headed home the winner against Chelsea just before the international break.

However, while his tally of four goals and one assist in seven appearances up top is genuinely impressive on paper, he failed to score or assist a goal against West Ham United, Nottingham Forest and Manchester United in the league and against PSV at home.

The former Real Sociedad ace might just about work as an emergency stand-in striker for a game or two, but it has become abundantly clear that he’s not good enough to play up top for any significant period.

What makes it all the more annoying for fans is the fact that a striker the club sold for pennies on the dollar in the summer has been scoring for fun on the continent while Merino has been struggling.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

The ex-Arsenal star who'd be their best striker

It would be fair to say that while Arsenal made a bit of a mess out of their signings last summer, they did pretty well when it came to their sales, getting £30m for Eddie Nketiah, up to £34m for Emile Smith Rowe and up to £25m for Aaron Ramsdale.

Arsenal manager MikelArteta

However, while fans were pretty happy with the sizable fees the club got for players deemed surplus to requirements, they may not have been aware that a young up-and-coming striker was sold to Austrian outfit Sturm Graz for just £4m: Mika Biereth.

Now, at the time, those who were aware likely didn’t care all that much, as while he managed to rack up a tally of 15 goals and nine assists on loan with Motherwell and Sturm Graz last season, he had never played for the Gunners’ first team, and with a fit Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus in the squad, it seemed like he never would.

However, the Dane’s simply sensational form this season has since proven that not only was it a massive mistake by the club to sell him for such a small sum of money, but a mistake to sell him full stop.

For example, in the first half of the season, the “crazy” talent, as dubbed by former GOAL reporter Robin Bairner, hit the ground running and by January had already scored 14 goals and provided five assists in just 25 appearances.

Such a rate of return was enough to tempt AS Monaco into spending £10.8m plus £1.75m in add-ons on the 22-year-old early into the winter window and to say that the investment has since paid off would be a considerable understatement.

In just 12 appearances for the Ligue 1 side, totalling 860 minutes, the London-born gem, whom former Manchester United defender Paul Parker described as “one of Europe’s most dangerous strikers,” has scored 11 goals and provided three assists.

That means he’s currently averaging 1.16 goal involvements every game, or one every 61.42 minutes on the French Riviera, which is just the sort of attacking output Arsenal desperately need.

Ultimately, while Merino is clearly trying up top, he’s not a natural goalscorer, and had Arteta and Co kept hold of Biereth, there might not even be a discussion around the club’s lack of cutting edge at all.

Their answer to Mbappe: The "best CF in Europe" wants to sign for Arsenal

While there are a few areas of the team that need to be addressed in the summer, Arsenal are most desperately in need of attacking reinforcements.

Specifically, the club must sign a new striker, as with Gabriel Jesus set to be out until the new year, Mikel Arteta’s only option up top for the start of next season will be Kai Havertz.

Moreover, even when the German was fit earlier in the season, it was clear that the Gunners were not scoring enough goals to seriously challenge Liverpool in the Premier League.

As a result, they need to bolster their forward line in the summer.

Arsenal's striker search

Fortunately, the club look ready to address this problem at the end of the season, and if reports are to be believed, one of their key targets, who has been compared to Kylian Mbappé, has now set his sights on joining Arsenal.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to a recent report from Spain, Newcastle United star Alexander Isak has made it clear that he wants to join Arsenal in the summer.

The Swedish international, who has been a target of the Gunners for some time now, wants to join a side capable of winning the league and views the North Londoners as just that.

However, the report claims that Liverpool are also keen on the striker and that to let him go, the Magpies will demand a potentially record-breaking fee from the Gunners, which other stories from earlier this season claimed could be up to £150m.

It would be an incredibly costly and complicated transfer to get over the line for Arsenal, but given Isak’s unreal ability, one well worth fighting for, especially as he’s won comparisons to Mbappé.

How Isak compares to Mbappé

So, before addressing the other reasons why Arsenal should go all out to sign Isak this summer, it’s worth first examining this comparison to Mbappé and where it comes from.

Alexander Isak

It primarily stems from FBref, which looks at players in similar positions across Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each one, and, in this instance, has concluded that the Frenchman is the fifth most similar forward to the Swede.

The best way to see where this comparison has come from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including, but not limited to, non-penalty expected goals plus assists, key passes, goal-creating actions, tackles won, aerial duel win percentage and more, all per 90.

However, a comparison to one of the best players in the world is obviously not the sole reason Arteta and Co should break the bank to sign the former Real Sociedad star.

In fact, the most significant argument for bringing him to the Emirates this summer is his utterly sensational output.

For example, in just 33 appearances, totalling 2613 minutes, the Solna-born marksman, whom teammate Anthony Gordon dubbed the “best striker in Europe,” has scored 23 goals and provided five assists.

That means he is currently averaging a goal involvement every 1.17 games, or every 93.32 minutes, which is the sort of output that could clinch the title for Arteta’s side next season.

Ultimately, Arsenal need a new number nine this summer, and while he will undoubtedly cost a king’s ransom to get out of Newcastle, they should be doing all they can to secure Isak’s services.

A APROXIMAÇÃO E O CONVENCIMENTO

Independentemente do tamanho do jogador, a gente sempre mantém a relação interpessoal.

Ollie Robinson, David Bedingham tons put Durham in front

171-run fifth-wicket stand leaves Glamorgan sweltering in the sunshine

Centuries from David Bedingham and Ollie Robinson provided the foundation of the Durham fightback on day two of their LV= Insurance County Championship Division two clash against Glamorgan. The visitors reduced Durham to 119 for 4 to put the pressure on, but Robinson and Bedingham responded with a stand of 171 for the fifth wicket. Robinson was the more fluent of the two batters and reached his second ton of the season from just 93 balls, continuing his impressive form.Bedingham had to work for his century but was rewarded for his effort posting his 15th first-class hundred on his way to his highest score of the campaign. The South African pressed Durham ahead of Glamorgan’s first-innings total, sharing another century stand with Graham Clark to give the home side the platform to build a sizeable lead on day three.

Glamorgan enjoyed a promising start to day two by making made inroads into the Durham line-up. Nightwatch Stanley McAlindon failed to see out the first over to hand Timm van der Gugten his first wicket, while James Harris then removed Michael Jones as Sam Northeast claimed a brilliant catch at second slip. The first half-hour could have been better for Glamorgan, but Alex Lees’ edge travelled between third slip and gully, denying Harris the second wicket of his first over.Scott Borthwick almost gave his wicket away when he attempted a quick single, only to be turned back by Lees halfway down the track. Time stood still for Andrew Salter to connect with the stumps, but he missed with his throw to let the Durham skipper off the hook. The two Durham batters got on the same page to register their fifty stand before Lees worked his way to his third half-century of the term. However, Glamorgan fought back to edge the morning session as Borthwick picked out Zain-ul-Hassan at midwicket before Lees was bowled in the final over before the interval by Andy Gorvin.Related

Another Carlson century underpins solid Glamorgan innings

Durham required a partnership in the afternoon session to stem the side. Robinson and Bedingham answered the call, emulating Glamorgan’s efforts from day one with a brilliant effort under the baking sun at Chester-le-Street. Robinson endured a tough time against van der Gugten early in his innings, surviving a close lbw shout on 3.But, after grinding through the first half-hour, the 24-year-old shifted through the gears with ease. He outscored Bedingham at the other end, surging past fifty and then towards his second century of the season, reaching three figures in the final over before tea with a sweep to the fence against Kiran Carlson with his 17th boundary.Bedingham was more reserved than his team-mate, but more than played his role as the two batters combined for 166 runs in the session at over five runs per over. Only a brilliant piece of keeping from Chris Cooke halted Robinson’s charge as he gathered a leg-side delivery from Gorvin and stretched to whip off the Durham batter’s bails after he overbalanced out of his crease.

Despite the loss of Robinson, Durham maintained their intensity as Bedingham scored his second century of the season, cutting Van der Gugten to the fence from the second delivery from the new ball. Clark compounded Durham’s advantage and his striking ability allowed him to follow his hundred from his last first-class outing with another milestone, posting fifty from 75 balls. As the day came to a close, Bedingham and Clark steered the hosts past the 400-run mark, earning a fourth batting point in the process and taking a lead of 21 into day three with five first-innings wickets remaining.

Broad to Cummins: 'All these boos are for you'

Stuart Broad said he was amazed that no senior Australian player questioned the morality of Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal

ESPNcricinfo staff04-Jul-2023

Stuart Broad: ‘It may have been a bit silly, but I also shouted ‘in’ every time I crossed the line’•Getty Images

Stuart Broad was “amazed that not one senior player” in the Australian team “questioned what they had done” during or after the hotly-debated dismissal of Jonny Bairstow in the Lord’s Test.Writing in his column for the two days after a heated fifth day at Lord’s, where England lost to go 2-0 down in the Ashes, Broad brought up the cultural review Australia had gone through in the aftermath of ball-tampering scandal involving sandpaper in Cape Town in 2018.”What amazed me, and what I told the Australians I could not believe as we left the field at lunch, was that not one senior player among them — and I very much understand in the emotion of the game that the bowler and wicketkeeper would have thought ‘that’s out’ — questioned what they had done.”Especially given what their team has been through over recent years, with all their cultural change. Not one of them said: ‘Hang on, lads. I’m not really sure about this.’ Not one of them thought: ‘He’s gaining no advantage. He’s not trying to get a run. It’s the end of the over. It’s a bit of a random dismissal. We should cancel that appeal.'”Ultimately, Pat Cummins is a really great guy and I would be amazed, once the emotion settles, if he does not sit back and think, ‘I got that one wrong’, even though his bottom line at the time was winning a Test match.”Related

Ashes finds its flashpoint as Bairstow stumping ignites England

The incident occurred when England were five down and needed a further 178 runs to win: Bairstow ducked underneath a short ball from Cameron Green, scratched the crease with his boot and walked down the pitch towards his partner Ben Stokes at the non-striker’s end. Before Bairstow had begun to leave his ground, wicketkeeper Alex Carey had gathered the ball on the bounce and, in one motion, under-armed a throw at stumps at the striker’s end. The on-field umpires, Ahsan Raza and Chris Gaffaney, referred the decision to TV umpire Marais Erasmus who gave the batter out – and the dismissal was recorded as stumped. Bairstow glared at the Australian huddle as he walked off and boos rang out around Lord’s. The crowd – who have been largely subdued throughout the first four days of this Test – then chanted repeatedly: “Same old Aussies, always cheating.”Broad said, for him, the crux of the matter was whether Bairstow was “looking to gain an advantage” and dismissed comparisons to previous incidents where England were the team trying to effect the dismissal.

“Yes, I have seen a clip from earlier in the match when in his guise as wicketkeeper, Jonny himself threw the ball at the stumps. But that was because Marnus Labuschagne was batting outside of his crease — in doing so, attempting to take the lbw out of the game. In other words, seeking an advantage,” Broad wrote. “Clips of Colin de Grandhomme being run out in the Lord’s Test last year have done the rounds, too, and that is just the most ludicrous comparison ever, because he got hit on the pad coming down the pitch, was searching for a run and Ollie Pope threw down the stumps from gully. Again, trying to gain an advantage.”With regards to the Jonny incident, zero advantage was being taken there: he let the ball go, scratched his mark within the crease, and acknowledging it as the end of the over, went to speak to Ben Stokes. And if you look at the footage of when the stumps were broken, one umpire has got the bowler’s cap in his hand, the other is head down, walking in from square leg — actions that suggest they too thought the over had finished.”So, within the laws of the game, is the ball still live because Alex Carey catches it and throws it? Probably. Is there any advantage being taken by England? No. Does a full stadium of people think that ball has been and gone? Yes. On BBC radio commentary, Jonathan Agnew has already moved on from the calling of the ball.”And while Broad did not condone the abuse the Australian players received from some MCC members as they walked through the long room at Lord’s at the lunch interval, he did not think it was unusual. He also elaborated on his prolonged exchange of words with the Australian players after he replaced Bairstow in the middle. “The Lord’s crowd are obviously huge cricket lovers and never before have I seen a reaction from them like that. They were so angry. I am not saying that the MCC members shouting at players was right but having toured Australia four times, I certainly do not think hostile behaviour towards away teams is unusual.Stuart Broad: ‘I am always better when I’m in a bit of a battle. I normally try and pick a fight with someone on the opposition but on this occasion I picked a fight with the whole team’•Getty Images

“The red mist came over me, too, when I arrived at the crease to replace Jonny, and some of what I said was picked up on the stump mics — which naively, given my experience, I didn’t really think about. I was angered by Australia’s decision, particularly having heard their lines about creating a new legacy as a team, and how they have changed since the tour of South Africa in 2018. I just said to Pat on repeat: ‘All these boos are for you, for your decision.’ And: ‘What a great opportunity you had to think clearly.'”Also, I needed to support Ben Stokes in any way, shape or form I could, and I am always better when I’m in a bit of a battle. I normally try and pick a fight with someone on the opposition but on this occasion I picked a fight with the whole team.”To Alex Carey, I said: ‘This is what you’ll be remembered for, and that’s such a shame.’ It may have been a bit silly, but I also shouted ‘in’ every time I crossed the line. It annoyed the Australians for maybe half-an-hour, although after two-and-a-half hours, they were probably a bit bored of it.The third Ashes Test begins on Thursday, and Broad was of the view shared by Stokes, Cummins and Brendon McCullum that it would be fiery. “Headingley is not the quietest place at the best of times but this week we will have to use the atmosphere to our advantage.”
