Two of the brightest young stars on either side had productive days with South Africa quick Gerald Coetzee claiming a hat-trick and Cricket Australia XI batter Campbell Kellaway scoring a century in the four-day clash at Allan Border Field. The 22-year-old Coetzee has genuine speed and had Jordan Buckingham caught in the gully and then dismissed Chris Tremain and Liam Hatcher for ducks. In shattering Hatcher’s stumps he also ensured CA XI were bowled out for 226 in reply to South Africa’s first innings of 347.Unbeaten on 105 for the CA XI was former Australian Under-19s representative Kellaway. The stylish 20-year-old left-hander made his first-class debut for Victoria last month and came to the crease at 4 for 24 with the CA XI under assault from Lungi Ngidi.Jake Doran (78) and Kellaway added 143 for the fifth wicket and went after Coetzee initially in a superb counter-attacking partnership. Kellaway was strong all around the ground and showcased power, touch and concentration in his innings.Ngidi took his early wickets in five fiery and fast overs. He dismissed three of the top four Sheffield Shield run-scorers this season, with Tim Ward caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne with the first ball of his opening spell before he accounted for Sam Whiteman and captain Peter Handscomb.South Africa earlier resumed at 335 for 7 but soon lost Kagiso Rabada and Verreynne. Fast bowler Marco Jansen was then dismissed for a duck.Middle-order batter Temba Bavuma did not feature in the first innings as he is nursing an elbow injury. Captain Dean Elgar, who top-scored with 109 on day one, said after the close of play on Friday he hoped Bavuma would recover and get some valuable time in the middle before the first Test against Australia which starts on December 17 at the Gabba.

Jos Buttler, Dawid Malan tons, Jofra Archer six-for snap England losing streak

Heinrich Klaasen produces fighting knock but South Africa miss out on World Cup Super League points

Valkerie Baynes01-Feb-2023

Jofra Archer claimed his maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs•AFP

England 346 for 7 (Buttler 131, Malan 118, Ngidi 4-62) beat South Africa 287 (Klaasen 80, Hendricks 52, Archer 6-40) by 59 runsJofra Archer’s maiden ODI five-for crowned his comeback and ensured England would leave with more than a consolation victory after Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan’s perfectly crafted centuries prevented what had looked like a certain series sweep to South Africa. The tourists depart in the knowledge that Archer is back in business after his 6 for 40 in just his second international match after spending the best part of two years out of the game injured. He sealed a 59-run victory despite the best efforts of Heinrich Klaasen and Wayne Parnell, who put on 85 runs off just 54 balls for the seventh wicket, which poses implications for South Africa’s hopes of qualifying directly for this year’s World Cup. They must now beat Netherlands 2-0 in their upcoming series and hope New Zealand defeat Sri Lanka at least once in their three-match series to secure an automatic berth in India. The hosts were on course for a 3-0 series result when England slumped to 14 for 3 thanks to Lungi Ngidi’s three wickets for seven runs in the space of 11 balls. But Buttler and Malan staged a fourth-wicket stand worth 232 runs to take their side to 346 for 7.Half-centuries from Klaasen and Reeza Hendricks and starts by Aiden Markram, Temba Bavuma and Parnell kept South Africa in touch but breaking partnerships was key for England and Archer was the chief destroyer.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Bavuma, centurion and Player of the Match as South Africa went 2-0 up on Sunday in Bloemfontein, eased to 22 off 16 balls at the end of the fourth over which included a huge six over deep midwicket off Chris Woakes. At 41 for no loss after seven, England introduced Archer, but it was Woakes who made the breakthrough with a slower ball that saw Bavuma chipping to Reece Topley at mid-off.Archer, back after resting for the second match, claimed just his second wicket of the series when Rassie van der Dussen slashed to Jason Roy at point. Archer’s next ball was a 146kph/90mph bouncer which rapped Markram’s left shoulder and Markram responded by driving the next ball fiercely down the ground for four. With Hendricks opening in place of Quinton de Kock, who was rested after picking up a minor thumb injury in the second ODI, South Africa’s run chase was still in good hands. He reached his fifty off 59 balls and put on a half-century partnership with Markram off 40 deliveries, but then Adil Rashid removed Hendricks, stepping back to try and dig out one that had pitched well outside leg stump before turning back to rap the inside of his left knee and deflect onto his stumps.Markram was looking set and put on 46 runs with Klaasen before he miscued off Archer and found Moeen Ali sitting under the ball at midwicket. That brought in David Miller and he crashed Moeen’s first ball through the covers for four and his fourth down the ground for an effortless-looking six. But then Archer removed the threat with the first ball of his next over, a sizzling back-of-a-length delivery that found Miller’s inside edge and was pouched by Buttler.Klaasen and Parnell then teamed up, Klaasen clubbing Moeen for 14 runs in the 37th over and reaching 80 off 62 before skying Archer to Ben Duckett, running in from deep backward square. Archer took out Parnell’s middle stump to seal his five-for and made it six when he pinged the top of Tabraiz Shamsi’s off stump, ending England’s five-match losing streak in ODIs.Jos Buttler leaves the crease after his century•AFP/Getty Images

At the 10-over mark, England’s scoring rate was going nowhere at 20 for 3 after South Africa had sent the visitors in on a Kimberley ground notoriously difficult to defend upon.Ngidi hit his lengths beautifully at the outset and struck with his sixth ball as Roy mistimed his attempted drive and picked out Bavuma at mid-off. Ngidi struck again in his second over with a shorter ball angled across left-hander Duckett, who nicked to Klaasen behind the stumps. Harry Brook was unable to lift his side off the back of his 80 in the second game, which followed a duck on debut in the series opener, when Ngidi had him caught behind stabbing at a wide delivery outside off stump which found the inside edge.Buttler found the initial going tough, taking 14 balls to get off the mark. Markram saw his fourth ball smashed for six over long-off as Buttler set about raising the tempo. That was after he had narrowly survived being run out chancing a second off Parnell with Miller diving, gathering and firing the ball into Klaasen in one fluid motion, and before Malan’s pull shot off Shamsi burst through Hendricks’ fingertips.Buttler raised his fifty off 64 balls, which was slow by his standards but what his side needed in the circumstances. Shamsi missed the chance to remove Malan when he dived to his right for an attempted return catch but managed only to get a finger to it. Malan then dispatched Parnell over the fence at deep square leg to bring up an even more sluggish half-century (off 79).ESPNcricinfo Ltd

From there, however, Malan went on the attack, carving Parnell to the boundary through backward point and heaving Shamsi for six over wide long-on, Shamsi conceding a second maximum in three balls when Buttler pummelled him over midwicket. The England duo pounced on anything short, and there was plenty from Jansen as he conceded 18 runs off the 34th over – 17 of them to Malan who targeted the leg-side fence, and beyond, three times in as many balls. They brought up their centuries within three balls of each other, Malan to the rope at deep-third and Buttler flicking to the leg side for two. Malan’s second fifty came off just 27 balls and Buttler’s from 42. Malan eventually fell to a leading edge off Sisanda Magala which found Klaasen waiting underneath it at short fine leg.Moeen offered an entertaining cameo, failing connect with his one-handed attempt at a reverse sweep off Shamsi but taking England past the 300-mark that had seemed out of reach earlier with back-to-back sixes, including one off a no-ball from Ngidi. Moeen’s knock ended when Ngidi nailed him with a yorker which tore between his ankles, and Buttler holed out to long-on off Jansen three balls later.

After O'Riley: Celtic now have a £25m star who will be their next big sale

For every Cameron Carter-Vickers, there is a Maik Nawrocki. For every Nicolas Kuhn, there is a Luis Palma. As evidenced here, getting recruitment right at an elite club like Celtic is never an easy task.

Thankfully, while there has been the odd miss along the way, the Parkhead giants have enjoyed far more hits on the transfer front in recent years, with Ange Postecoglou and Brendan Rodgers having overseen a golden period of domestic dominance for the Hoops.

Indeed, the Scottish champions have become renowned for sniffing out a bargain, with young Matt O’Riley perhaps the greatest example of the club’s scouting success. Signed for just £1.5m from third-tier English club, MK Dons, the Danish international was subsequently sold for a club record £25m fee last summer.

There may be a sense of frustration among some at being labelled something of a ‘selling club’, although that also goes hand in hand with being able to offer a clear pathway to help attract talented, high-potential talents in the first place.

Perhaps, having witnessed the fortunes of many of those who have opted to leave the Glasgow side in the hope of a brighter future elsewhere, the current crop may think again before securing too hasty an exit.

The fortunes of Celtic's record sales

Let’s begin with O’Riley. The current Brighton and Hove Albion man hasn’t exactly enjoyed the smoothest of starts in English football, picking up a cruel injury blow just nine minutes into his competitive debut for the Seagulls.

Now into March, the 24-year-old has only started five Premier League games for the high-flying side, albeit while notably stealing the headlines after scoring the winning goal in the 2-1 comeback win over Manchester City.

Meanwhile, six years on from leaving the Hoops to join Arsenal, Kieran Tierney is set to re-join the Old Firm side this summer on a free transfer, with the 27-year-old having endured an injury-hit spell south of the border.

The Scotland star will follow in the footsteps of another of the club’s notable sales, Jota, by making an emotional return to Celtic Park, with the Portuguese sensation lasting just 18 months abroad before making his way back to Glasgow.

Elsewhere, at the age of 28, Moussa Dembele – sold to Lyon for £20m in 2018 – now finds himself out in Saudi Arabia, while fellow striker, Odsonne Edouard, is now in something of an exile on loan at Leicester City, having signed for Crystal Palace for £14m in 2021.

As evidenced with the club’s five record sales above, the grass isn’t necessarily always greener elsewhere. Perhaps that might be something Celtic’s potential next big sale might want to consider…

Celtic's next big sale

Discussing those who could leave Rodgers’ side should well be viewed in a flattering sense, with talk surrounding the club’s key figures a sign that they are performing at a high level for the Premiership leaders.

Market Movers

Performing at a high level is exactly what this current Celtic team is doing right now, having come agonisingly close to seeing off Bayern Munich in the Champions League Round of 16. Such a showing would have been unheard of earlier in the campaign, let alone last season.

A player who has been central to the improvements on the European stage, in particular, is Arne Engels, with the 21-year-old having enjoyed a stunning debut campaign in green and white.

It hasn’t all been plain-sailing, with Rodgers coming out in defence of a player who he said “is nowhere near the finished article” following a quiet spell back in the Autumn, yet the £11m man has really taken it up a gear of late.

Brought in from Augsburg as Celtic’s record signing, it might not be too long before Engels breaks that £25m barrier as the club’s record sale too.

At present, the midfield maestro already has 22 goals and assists to his name in all competitions, a tally that includes four goal involvements in just ten outings in the Champions League.

Also described by Celtic legend Chris Sutton as a player he is “liking… more and more”, the promising Belgian has certainly gone someway to filling O’Riley’s void, even while carrying the burden of his hefty price tag.

Arne Engels

That said, that £11m fee could now even be considered a bargain due to his soaring value, with CIES Football Observatory suggesting that he is already worth as much as €30m (£25m), thus marking a 127% increase on his initial cost.

Previously also tipped to be Celtic’s first £40m sale, Engels is certainly doing a lot right at this moment in time. Let’s hope, for both his sake and the club’s, that such form continues.

Compared to £105m star: Celtic struck gold with "exceptional" £1.4m signing

At a time when defensive midfielders are priced at £100m+, Celtic struck gold by signing an “exceptional” midfield maestro for only £1.4m.

Imagine him & Dorgu: Man Utd enter talks to sign £55m Quenda alternative

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has only been in the role for four months, but he’s already made some impressive additions to help bolster the first-team squad.

His first signing as Red Devils boss saw him complete a £30m deal for left-back Patrick Dorgu from Italian side Lecce, looking to put an end to their crisis in such an area.

The Dane may have already received a red card, but when he has been available, the 20-year-old has impressed, with arguably his most impressive coming in the 4-1 triumph over Real Sociedad.

Dorgu

Given his tender age, he has the ability to nail down his place in the side for many years to come, whilst also having the potential to improve further down the line.

He could be aided in his attempts in wide areas by one player who’s been on the club’s radar in recent days ahead of the opening of the transfer window in a couple of months.

Man Utd enter talks to land £55m talent

According to GIVEMESPORT, United have entered talks to sign Southampton’s teenage sensation Tyler Dibling ahead of a potential move next season.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at St Mary’s despite the Saints’ struggles this season, featuring in 25 Premier League matches and often being the shining light.

Southampton's TylerDiblingcelebrates scoring their third goal with Mateus Fernandes

He’s so far managed to register two goals but is able to operate in either of the two central roles behind the striker or a wing-back role in Amorim’s system – making him a superb versatile option.

However, the side who are bottom of the Premier League set a £55m price tag for his services in recent months, with United having to fork out a small fortune if they want to sign him this window.

Despite the huge fee, he could prove to be a solid addition for the Red Devils, allowing them to forget about missing out on a player who’d previously worked under Amorim.

How Dibling compares to Quenda in 2024/25

Ever since the 40-year-old replaced Erik ten Hag at the helm as United manager, winger Geovany Quenda has been touted as a potential signing given his time under him at Sporting CP.

However, the 17-year-old won’t be moving to Manchester in the near future, after Chelsea agreed a deal in the region of £42m for the teenager, with the Portuguese talent spending next season on loan at the Liga Portugal outfit.

He’s signed a seven-year contract with Enzo Maresca’s side, with the Blues investing in yet another young player for the future, ending United’s pursuit of the star.

However, it could see them targeting Dibling, offering an impressive option for Amorim, especially if his stats from the current campaign are anything to go by.

The 19-year-old has matched or bettered Quenda in numerous key areas, showcasing his quality and highlighting how much of a superb signing he would be for the Red Devils.

Dibling, who’s previously been dubbed “incredible” by journalist Kaustubh Pandey, may have registered fewer combined goals and assists, but he has managed to complete more dribbles per 90 this season.

He’s also won more duels and fouls per 90, having the pace and direct nature to cause the opposition endless problems, only getting better with age, with Dibling still just 19.

Missing out on Quenda would undoubtedly have been a huge disappointment to many supporters, especially with the youngster moving to one of their Premier League rivals.

However, Dibling has showcased he’s just as capable of filling the void at Old Trafford, with the £55m fee potentially a bargain if he continues on his current trajectory.

Man Utd thought they had their new Beckham, but Ten Hag sold him for £9m

Manchester United certainly made a mistake selling a player who could’ve been their next David Beckham.

Pandya vs Pandya as LSG look to break out of mid-table jam

The de Kock question looms for Super Giants while Titans may bring in Joseph to replace Little

Big Picture: Can Rahul-less LSG get their campaign back on track? Lucknow Super Giants had one of the brighter starts to the IPL 2023 season, winning four of their first six games. Since then, however, they have won just one match in four, with their campaign losing some steam. In their last outing against Chennai Super Kings at home, Super Giants were struggling on 125 for 7 in 19.2 overs before persistent rain forced abandonment and points were shared. To make matters worse, LSG have also lost their captain KL Rahul, who has been ruled out of the season due to a thigh injury.Related

It doesn’t help then that they next face table-toppers Gujarat Titans, a team they are yet to beat in the tournament in three attempts. They had a chance to correct that number last time around. Chasing 136 for a win, Super Giants were comfortably placed on 105 for 1, needing 31 off 36, but a bizarre collapse saw them go down by seven runs.Make no mistake, Super Giants are still primed to make the playoffs. They have 11 points and are placed third on the table, but have four teams tailing them very closely. With the league stage entering its business end, further slip-ups can hurt Super Giants big time.As odd as it might sound, they will be relieved to move out of their home venue of Lucknow, where they have been winless in their last four games. The key question remains whether or not Quinton de Kock will finally get a game. Ruturaj Gaikwad, whose only ODI so far came against South Africa in October last year, is also part of the squad along with the uncapped Mukesh Kumar. Most of the regulars in the frame for the ODI World Cup have been included in the Rohit Sharma-led squad. Hardik Pandya is the vice-captain.With Mohammed Shami rested, Mohammed Siraj is expected to spearhead a pace attack that also includes Jaydev Unadkat, Shardul Thakur, Mukesh and Umran Malik apart from the allrounder Hardik.Suryakumar Yadav, who occupied one of the middle order slots during the home ODIs against Australia in March, has been retained. Playing in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who was out with a back injury, Suryakumar finished the series with three first-ball ducks, but bounced back with prolific returns in the IPL for Mumbai Indians.Washington Sundar, who was also part of the Australia series, has been left out, with Ravindra Jadeja and Axar preferred as the spin-bowling allrounders. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav are the two frontline spinners.Samson will have an opportunity to add to his 11 ODI caps if the team management wants to play a keeper-batter suited to the middle order; Kishan typically bats higher up the order. Samson has so far scored 330 ODI runs in 10 innings at an average of 66.00, with two half-centuries. One of them came in a match-winning chase against West Indies in Port-of-Spain last year. Samson can also play as a specialist batter even if Kishan is picked as keeper.India ODI Squad: Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (vice-capt), Shardul Thakur, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Mohammed Siraj, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar.
