Wilder’s next O’Connell: Sheffield United could now sign £8.5k p/w EFL star

The drama at the very top of the Championship table never seems to disappoint as Sheffield United were handed a significant reality check last time out.

Indeed, the Blades – after three straight wins in the entertaining division – collapsed on their own patch to Hull City on Friday night, as Ruben Selles’ Tigers picked up a surprise 3-0 victory to really sour the mood at Bramall Lane.

SheffieldUnitedmanagerChris Wilder reacts after the match

Wilder will pray this is just a momentary blip on the way to greater success ahead, with his promotion teams of the past often priding themselves on resolute displays at the back away from leaking three strikes at home.

One defensive titan who is loved to this day from this successful period in South Yorkshire is Jack O’Connell, who signed for the club when the Blades were marooned in League One, only to then taste multiple promotions as a key figure.

Jack O'Connell's importance at United

The 6 foot 3 defender would go on to be a long-standing servant of the club all the way up until 2023 when a heartbreaking announcement surrounding his retirement was made public.

Before that came to be, however, O’Connell was a relied-upon colossus over many a season at Bramall Lane, with the Liverpool-born rock going on to make 177 appearances in total.

Away from keeping a stunning 17 clean sheets during the memorable 2018/19 season that more than helped United jump up to the Premier League, O’Connell would also form a reputation donning Blades red and white for being a goalscoring presence up from the back, with nine goals coming his way across his distinguished time at the club.

Unfortunately, injury issues began to plague the defender the more his time went on in South Yorkshire, leading to that devastating retirement two years ago after so many highlights.

But, Wilder could be about to win his second iteration of the towering Englishman if this purchase late into the window gets over the line, as the passionate boss looks to strengthen his team’s defence after a shock defeat to Hull.

Transfer Focus

The player who could be O'Connell 2.0

The player in question here is Queens Park Rangers star Jimmy Dunne who Football League World revealed a few days ago was being looked at by Wilder and Co.

Dunne certainly shares many of the same standout attributes that made O’Connell such a revered figure at Bramall Lane, with the 27-year-old an important goalscorer this season for the Hoops as much as he has also operated as a man mountain defensively.

Looking at the table above, there are many eerie similarities between the two defenders, with both players possessing a similar taste for wanting to be involved in attacks with Dunne boasting four goals this season next to O’Connell’s three.

But, both brutes also strive to be aerially dominant for their teams with the QPR ace standing out with a staggering 7.8 duels won on average per league contest this season next to his now-retired counterpart’s number of 6.3.

Queens Park Rangers'JimmyDunnecelebrates after the match

It remains to be seen whether Marti Cifuentes would let such an influential member of his team leave, but Wilder would absolutely love to turn back time and gain a player who is in a similar mould to O’Connell, especially with Harry Souttar on the sidelines for the foreseeable.

The Blades cannot afford any more porous displays such as the Hull defeat to start negatively impacting their promotion chances, with the signing of this £8.5k-per-week target no doubt making them far harder to breach.

Wilder must axe Sheffield United flop who earns more than Hamer & Burrows

Chris Wilder could now be tempted to ditch this Sheffield United flop completely.

Insouciant Hampshire complete Tom Prest's groundwork

Hampshire now assured of home tie in knockout phases

Tom Prest led Hampshire’s chase•Getty Images

Hampshire 260 for 7 (Prest 76, Snater 3-46) beat Essex 257 for 8 (Snater 64) by three wickets.Hampshire once again showed their insouciance as they chased down 257 to set up a home knockout fixture while knocking Essex Eagles out of the Royal London Cup.Hampshire had found themselves behind the rate despite Tom Prest’s 76 and required 78 from the last 10 overs, on a pitch difficult to score on.But Toby Albert – who had match-winning 84 and 65 not outs against Derbyshire and Lancashire – continued his clutch form with 34 in 26 balls before Felix Organ, Ian Holland and Scott Currie took their side to a three-wicket victory.Hampshire, who were already through despite losing for the first time against Glamorgan last time, will play a home semi-final if they beat Yorkshire at Scarborough on Tuesday, or a home play-off if they don’t and Lancashire defeat Kent.Related

Hampshire found timing the ball a chore almost from the off of their chase, as Nick Gubbins was brilliantly caught at slip by Khushi in the fourth over before Ben Brown was bowled.Aneurin Donald added some impetus with a slog-swept and on-driven sixes and Prest looked at his most fluent during their 54-run partnership, the required run rate had gradually inclined though.Donald was run out attempting a push and run and Fletcha Middleton’s attempt to wrestle back the rate saw him sky straight up.Prest reached his third fifty of the competition in 73 balls before he hoisted to long off, having twice been dropped during his innings of 76. Victory seemed a distance off.But Albert’s flair in a vital 60-run partnership with Organ took Hampshire to 31 needed from 28. That was dragged down to 12 needed when Organ was caught at midwicket for 30.That dozen was knocked off by Ian Holland and Scott Currie with ten balls to spare, and took Hampshire back to the top of Group B.Essex had chosen to bat and began with unbridled run-scoring with Feroze Khushi and Robin Das rushing to 44 inside six overs but a bowling change to Jack Campbell reversed the momentum. The fast left-hander struck with his fifth delivery when he found extra bounce to have Khushi caught behind before getting Tom Westley to loop to midwicket – both wickets sandwiched by Das flicking Ian Holland to deep square to leave Essex 48 for three.Grant Roelofson, the Eagles’ leading run-getter in the competition, lived a charmed life as he was dropped on five, eight and 29 before Toby Albert finally clung on under a steepler at deep square.Nick Browne and Luc Benkenstein had also departed by this point, with Essex 112 for six, with Aron Nijjar following when leg before to Nick Gubbins’ leg spin. But Shane Snater and Richards recovered things and took their side towards a par score. Netherlands international Snater caught the eye with a huge slog sweep but it was his intelligent gap finding that accumulated runs quickly. His maiden format fifty came in 51 balls during a 96-run stand with Richards – who only scored one boundary in his unbeaten 31. Snater was eventually caught at cover for 64 but Ben Allison thwacked two sixes to take Essex to 257 for eight.

Cost £19m, now worth more than Dorgu: Man Utd struck gold on amazing star

Manchester United’s recent 2-1 FA Cup win over Leicester City saw a few tactical tweaks to Ruben Amorim’s side. One of those was to find an internal solution at left centre-back. With Lisandro Martinez’s injury, the Portuguese boss had to find a new source of progression in that area of the pitch.

In the first half, Noussair Mazraoui started in the role but swapped sides with young Leny Yoro, who started on the opposite side. Luckily for Amorim, the Frenchman seemed comfortable in that role.

Again, it was a game where Kobbie Mainoo started at number 10 after the experiment of playing him as a false nine did not work, although he did struggle. It also saw a debut for new signing Patrick Dorgu, although perhaps not in the position many expected.

Patrick Dorgu’s Man United debut in numbers

After making the move from Serie A club Lecce to Old Trafford at the end of the January transfer window, it was assumed that Dorgu would play at left wing-back, although Amorim sprung a surprise by starting him on the right instead.

The new Red Devils boss defended his selection decision at full time, explaining that “for his last team he played a lot of games on the right”. This certainly implies to United fans he could start there more often.

H, Football analyst and host of The Overlap: The Breakdown, seemed to be pleased with what he saw from Dorgu on his first night as a United player. He said the Dane “had a couple of actions where he was sharp”, describing his performance as “good”.

Of course, there might well be pressure that comes with the 20-year-old, through no fault of his own. Not only are United signings naturally heavily scrutinised, but he was Amorim’s first acquisition. However, it was not a signing that broke the bank, with the Dane costing just £25m up front and a further £4.1m in add-ons.

The wing-back on the opposite side is actually worth even more than what United paid for Dorgu, and he has certainly been a good investment for the Old Trafford club.

The Man United star who's worth more than Dorgu

The player in question here is Portugal international Diogo Dalot. He has been a crucial player under Amorim since he came into the club, playing at wing-back on both flanks and even for a short time against Rangers, at right centre-back.

The 25-year-old, who came through the youth ranks at FC Porto and cost United £19m in 2018, has played 19 games under Amorim so far. Dalot also got himself on the scoresheet in the most recent Europa League win for United, a 2-0 victory over FCSB.

The Red Devils’ number 20 was described as “influential” by football statistician Statman Dave. That certainly seems true, given the number of games he has played recently.

Gary Neville has been full of praise for the former Porto player this season. At the end of December, he said that Dalot, along with attacker Amad and Mazraoui, were the only players “that can probably say that they have done ok” under the management team.

Last season, Neville acknowledged that the Red Devils “might have the right-back for the future” in Dalot, suggesting this season is a continuation of good form.

His stats from this season compared to last, courtesy of Squawka, make for good reading. For example, he averages 5.9 ball recoveries in the Premier League this season compared to 5.6 in 2023/24.

The Portugal international has certainly been important for the Red Devils, and, in Neville’s opinion, he has played well. Thus, it might be unsurprising to learn he is valued as highly as £47m according to Football Transfers.

Of course, that is far more than the £29.1m they paid for Dorgu, and the early signs are that he will be a good player. It is also a substantial increase on the £19m they invested in Dalot under Jose Mourinho, which is a 147% increase on the initial fee.

This seems like it has been a worthy investment from the Red Devils. Not only is the full-back a key player now, but he could be vital for years to come. His value, which is far higher than what Dorgu cost, has shot up since they first bought him. All things considered, United really struck gold on Dalot.

Wolves must regret losing loan "maestro" who’s worth 202% more than Munetsi

The race for survival is heating up in the Premier League. Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently on 19 points after 24 games, just 21 points away from the magical 40-point total that is thought to all but guarantee a side safety in the top-flight for another season.

The Old Gold will need their big stars to turn up in the final few months of the season. Matheus Cunha will be key, as will Rayan Ait-Nouri. This could be their last few games in a Wolves shirt, given both could leave in the summer. They were linked with a move away in January, too.

Vitor Pereira will also be hoping his January signings can put in some big performances in their fight for survival. New midfielder Marshall Munetsi will be a key player.

Munetsi’s January move to Wolves

The Old Gold signed Zimbabwean midfielder Munetsi on deadline day of the 2025 January transfer window. The 28-year-old signed from French outfit Stade Reims, with the transfer fee reported to be £17m.

His record for the Ligue 1 outfit is impressive. Munetsi pulled on the Reims shirt 159 times in total, scoring 21 goals and grabbing 14 assists. He is a versatile player, able to play all over the midfield, as a number six, a number eight or even a number ten.

So far, the midfielder has played once for the Old Gold, with his debut coming in the FA Cup, a 24-minute cameo against Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

So, although it is early days, the signs that Munetsi might become an excellent player for the Old Gold are certainly positive ones. He could be a huge figure in their battle for Premier League survival.

However, it might have the Wolves fans reminiscing about a former midfielder who has become a brilliant player of his own and is worth far more than the £17m they paid for Munetsi.

The former Wolves midfielder worth more than Munetsi

It has been a rapid rise to the top for former Wolves loanee Vitinha. Now thriving at Paris Saint Germain, the Portugal international made the move to Molineux on a season-long loan in the 2020/21 campaign. The deal had a buy option, but they did not activate it.

It is fair to say that things did not necessarily work out for the Portuguese midfielder. He played 22 times in all competitions for the club, managing just one goal and one assist. His sole strike was a sublime FA Cup fourth-round winning goal way to non-league Chorley.

Since playing for the Old Gold, Vitinha has made a real name for himself at PSG in their midfield. He has played 125 times for the club, managing 16 goals and ten assists including 11 goal involvements in Ligue 1 last term.

He is also a full international with Portugal, and was a key member of their Euro 2024 squad alongside the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo, grabbing three assists in the tournament. He has 25 caps for his country so far.

The “maestro”, as Statman Dave described him, is now worth far more than what Wolves paid for Munetsi. According to Football Transfers, Vitinha is valued at £51.4m, which is 202% more than the fee that their new midfielder cost them.

In fact, if that wasn’t enough, he was also incredibly nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or.

The stats on Squawka suggest this is a fair gap in valuation, too. Using data from the 2023/24 Ligue 1 season, the Portugal star ranked above Munetsi in many metrics, including chances created, with 1.5 compared to 0.5 per game.

On reflection, the Old Gold might be kicking themselves that they didn’t get the most out of Vitinha during his time at Molineux. Given his value now, and how much more he is worth compared to Munetsi, he could have been a key man in Pereira’s midfield.

Wolves might wish they had just activated the buy option in Vitinha’s loan deal because they could have had a superb, and expensive, player on their hands.
