Rachel Priest leaves London Spirit without a prayer in 18-run win at Lord's

Hard-hitting 76 from 42 balls posts highest total of women’s competition so far

Trent Rockets 151 for 4 (Priest 76) beat London Spirit 133 for 7 (Higham 2-12) by 18 runsTrent Rockets put runs on the board and got themselves points on the table with an emphatic win over London Spirit at Lord’s. Set up by a belligerent innings from opener Rachel Priest, who scored 64 of her 76 runs in boundaries, Rockets became the first team in the women’s competition to pass 150 – a demanding target that Spirit did not have the requisite firepower to chase down.On a hybrid surface that had only been used once, after the men’s London derby fixture was washed out at the weekend, Priest did the lion’s share of the scoring as Rockets added a century stand for the first wicket before eventually departing for 76 from 42; at which point Nat Sciver put a further dent in the home side’s spirits by crashing 32 from 16. Freya Davies was the only bowler to go at less than a run a ball, with Spirit’s efforts hampered by a request from CWI that Deandra Dottin not bowl.In their reply, the returning Tammy Beaumont, who missed Spirit’s opening two fixtures after attending her brother’s wedding, struck her second and third balls for four before falling to Kathryn Bryce as they slipped to 25 for 2 inside the Powerplay. Dottin hammered Katherine Brunt for an imposing six over long-on as she and Heather Knight guided them to 70 for 2 at halfway – but sharp work from Priest and Sarah Glenn saw Dottin run-out backing up for 29 off 19 and the rest of innings fell away.Priest repays faith
New Zealand veteran Priest had made a grand total of eight runs off ten balls (with two scoring shots) across Rockets’ first two matches in the tournament, defeats to Southern Brave and Northern Superchargers. But on a belting surface at Lord’s, Priest brought the benefit of five Women’s T20 World Cups and three 50-over World Cups to bear to post a formidable 151 for 4.Priest and Sammy-Jo Johnson made a steady start, taking the score to 26 for 0 at the end of the Powerplay. But the introduction of Chloe Tryon’s left-arm spin for the next set – possibly a match-ups decision with two right-handers on strike – helped grease the wheels. Tryon’s first ball was a high full toss that was dumped for four (as well as being called a no-ball), and although the free hit went begging, the next ball became the first of Priest’s four leg-side mows for six; then another four disappeared through point.Confident in her ability to pummel boundaries, Priest was happy to soak up a few dots – she faced 13 in the course of her innings – and pounce when offered up a morsel. She should have been caught by Beaumont at deep midwicket on 40, but the ball instead ended up trickling to the rope, and she then tucked into Charlie Dean’s offspin with a thump down the ground followed by another heave to leg, raising a 29-ball fifty. At the point Spirit took their strategic timeout, Priest had 71 from 36 with 40 balls still remaining in the innings, and was on track for the first hundred in the new format – only for Beaumont to atone with an excellent running catch off the 67th.Severe Sciver
With Johnson playing an anchoring role, Rockets looked to their captain for an injection of rocket fuel during the closing stages of the innings. Sciver duly obliged, ticking along to 8 off 7 before dismantling Danielle Gibson during the 17th set of the innings. The first of three consecutive boundaries had an element of fortune about it, as she managed to clear Alice Monaghan at long-on, despite the ball landing a few yards inside the rope. But there was a touch of naked brutality about the back-to-back sixes that followed: a clean punch over mid-off that just kept going and going, and then an almighty crack that sailed beyond long-on, measured at 82 metres. It wasn’t to cost them in the end, but the Rockets innings ended up having a slightly lopsided look to it. With Johnson batting through until the last 15 balls for 25 off 34, and Sciver holing out in the final set, there was a sense that they could have racked up an even bigger score. Between them, Priest and Sciver managed 108 from 58, while Johnson, Katherine Brunt and Heather Graham made 34 off 43 (and yes, that does add up to 101 balls bowled – because Priest’s tally includes a no-ball that was hit for four).Spirit fade out
The partnership between Dottin and Knight kept Spirit in with a chance, adding 45 from 28 balls to leave them needing a steep – but not unconquerable – 80 from 50. Both players benefited from dropped catches as Rockets began sloppily but it was a piece of fielding that helped break the stand – Priest was alert to possibility when Knight came down the pitch and padded into the off side, the wicketkeeper racing up and relaying to Glenn, who removed the bails with Dottin well short of regaining her ground. From that point, it was largely a case of the visiting side keeping their composure. Lucy Higham was given her first bowl of the tournament and struck straight away, as Deepti Sharma shovelled a full toss to short fine leg – Bryce holding on above her head. Another fine catch, Emily Windsor running in from deep backward square, saw off the dangerous Tryon, and when Knight chipped to mid-off with 52 needed from 25, the contest was all but done, despite some lusty lower-order biffing from Dean and Gibson that narrowed the eventual margin of victory.

Joe Root expresses sympathy for Azeem Rafiq as England prepare for Headingley Test

England captain “desperate” to make game more inclusive following allegations of racism at Yorkshire

Joe Root says he is “desperate” to make the game more inclusive in light of Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of racism at Yorkshire.Rafiq accused Yorkshire of institutional racism resulting in an enquiry into the issue at the club. Last week, Yorkshire issued a “profound apology” to Rafiq after acknowledging that several of his allegations were upheld and admitting he was the “victim of inappropriate behaviour”. They also accepted the report found they had failed to implement their own policies and procedures.Root, the England captain, was a former team-mate of Rafiq at Yorkshire and believes the issue is “something we have to prioritise as a sport” to ensure “this isn’t something that happens again further down the line”. And he accepts cricket has a lot of work to do to combat the issue of racism.Related

Yorkshire apologise to 'victim of inappropriate behaviour' Rafiq

Wood ruled out of Headingley Test due to shoulder injury

“As a former team-mate and friend, it’s hard to see Azeem hurting as he is,” Root said. “More than anything, it just shows that there is a lot of work we have to do in the game.”It’s a societal issue in my opinion. We have seen it in other sports; we have seen it in other areas. As a sport, we have got to keep trying to find ways of making sure this isn’t a conversation that keeps happening. We have got to find ways of creating more opportunities, making our game more diverse and educating better.”I don’t think that just comes from players and administrators: it’s from everyone in the game. There has got to be a want and a will to do that. It is something we have to prioritise as a sport and make sure this isn’t something that happens again further down the line.”Root also confirmed his England team would wear anti-discrimination t-shirts and observe a “moment of unity” ahead of the third LV= Insurance Test against India as has been their custom in recent times. The game, which starts on Wednesday, is to be played at Headingley, the headquarters of Yorkshire.”I think it is really important we have the moment of unity,” Root said. “We have to keep showing the sport is for everyone and that we are desperate to make everyone feel welcome to it. It’s such a brilliant sport and should be open to everyone.”We have to do more, I get that. But, as a team, it is a big focus for us to make the game for everyone and to make it as welcoming as we can. I know we keep talking about it but I am desperate to do something about it. Hopefully in time you can see that come into action.”ESPNcricinfo understands that, at present, Yorkshire have not shared the report with either the PCA or the ECB despite requests to do so. Instead the club are taking legal advice on whether the report, which is understood to contain negative observations on several individuals, can be shared at all outside the organisation without risking libel action from those implicated. As a result, the value of the report – a report which cannot be seen or discussed or, as a result, effectively acted upon – might well be questioned.Meanwhile, however, figures from each of the major two parties in British politics are understood to have been in touch with Rafiq to express concern and offer support. With the ECB also keen to investigate the issue, it seems increasingly likely another report – possibly a report with judicial or parliamentary powers – could be commissioned. Whichever way you look at it, the issue appears unlikely to be resolved in the short term.Craig Overton and Saqib Mahmood at England training•PA Images via Getty Images

England’s issues are less weighty. With Sam Curran, despite a king pair at Lord’s, set to keep his place and Dawid Malan in line to return at No. 3, it appears England are facing a straight choice between Craig Overton and Saqib Mahmood for the final place in the side for the Test – following the news Mark Wood would not be fit for selection. Moeen Ali is also set to retain his place, with Haseeb Hameed and Rory Burns forming a new opening pair. While Saqib’s first-class record is relatively modest – he has played only 22 first-class games and taken just one five-wicket haul – he enjoyed an excellent limited-overs series against Pakistan a few weeks ago and has clearly made a positive impression on Root.”I feel like Saqib couldn’t be in a better place to potentially play Test cricket,” Root said. “You look at how he has progressed over the past couple of years across all the formats and the opportunities he has taken this year and he’s been a standout bowler.”Root also admitted he had appreciated the opportunity to “to get away from cricket a little bit” after England’s defeat in the second Test and a session towards the end of India’s second-innings in which his side appeared to lose control in the field.”You can beat yourself up for hours and hours about things you could have done differently,” Root said. “But ultimately it doesn’t guarantee you anything. I’m sure there will be other ex-captains out there who will look back on different passages of play that they could have managed differently. It’s part and parcel of the job sometimes, you have to take it on the chin.”It’s really important to learn but not to drag it into this Test match. We’ll have new challenges, a new surface and a completely new Test to deal with. I’m a more experienced player having gone through that. As long as we don’t make silly mistakes, we’ll grow and become a better team.”I’m playing for England. I’m playing Test cricket. I’m living my boyhood dream. When I was 10 years old I couldn’t think of anything else I wanted to do. Living that boyhood dream is one way you can keep motivating yourself to front up to the next challenge and the next day.”

Fewer touches & passes than Onana: 4/10 Man Utd star should be dropped

A point against Aston Villa is certainly not a bad result for Manchester United, particularly after the few days the respective clubs have had.

While Villa were defeating Bayern Munich in a historic week, United let a two-goal lead slip against Porto and ultimately salvaged a last-gasp 3-3 draw in the Europa League.

It was a horror night for Erik ten Hag. It was a night of triumph for Villa. Yesterday’s game was anything but. It was a pretty torrid game of football, truth be told, with the match ending with the lowest xG we’ve seen in a Premier League clash for two years.

So, was there much to take from the game? Well, avoiding defeat has probably given Ten Hag a few more weeks in the dugout.

The Dutchman has been under increasing scrutiny at Old Trafford and could well lose his job if their sequence of results continues. After all, this has been their worst start after seven games to a Premier League season.

Perhaps Jonny Evans could save him…

Man United's best performers vs Aston Villa

United failed to conjure up too many moments of magic in the final third with Bruno Fernandes coming closest, hitting the far with a lovely free-kick.

So, it was over to their defence to remain resolute. Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt were both dropped and in came Harry Maguire and Evans.

Maguire limped off at half-time and had to be substituted but he and the Northern Irishman were both fantastic. Evans notably won all five of his aerial duels and won six of his seven ground battles on the way to winning the game’s Player of the Match award.

Diogo Dalot was also in better form after his nightmare start to the new season at left-back. He was caught off guard by Brennan Johnson against Spurs last week but was in the right place at the right time to block what looked like a certain goal for Jaden Philogene in the 92nd minute.

The ball fell to the Villa wideman at the back post but Dalot got into position and blocked a powerful effort well.

Of course, it wasn’t all positive for United. Their frontline continues to falter.

Man United's worst performer against Aston Villa

Ten Hag’s men may well have found the net three times in midweek but it is now three straight league outings without a goal.

That drought started against Crystal Palace, continued at home to Spurs and then they unfortunately looked just as toothless against Emery’s team.

It was felt as though young Rasmus Hojlund would make a difference but he was anonymous on Sunday afternoon and was consequently dragged off after 64 minutes in the Midlands.

Why? Well, he ineffectively held the ball up, didn’t run the channels well and failed to present himself as a strong target inside the area.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

As Manchester Evening News reporter Samuel Luckhurst noted in the process of handing the Dane a 4/10 match rating, he ‘got nowhere with or without the ball’ during his time on the field.

That was perhaps best exemplified by the fact that Hojlund’s touch count of 15 was far fewer than goalkeeper Andre Onana’s haul of 37.

His pass count of just five was also far fewer than Onana’s 21. The 21-year-old will no doubt improve as he builds up his fitness but he may well find himself dropped after the international break.

This was a sorry display, one further typified by his lightweight nature in the duel, winning just one of five battles against the Villa defence. He got no change at all from the likes of Pau Torres and Diego Carlos.

"It’s class" – Rarely seen Sunderland teenager loving life under Le Bris

It’s taken Regis Le Bris just over three months to transform Sunderland from Championship strugglers to bona fide promotion contenders. Last term, under Michael Beale and Mike Dodds, the Black Cats finished 16th in England’s second division, just six points above the relegation zone. This season, however, after nine games played, they are top of the table, having won six and drawn one.

Biggest coup since Defoe: Le Bris could land a 'lifelong Sunderland fan'

Sunderland would love to secure this mammoth deal in January.

1 ByKelan Sarson Oct 8, 2024

Le Bris’ side looked to be facing defeat against Leeds last week after Joel Piroe and Junior Firpo had canceled out Chris Rigg’s opener, however a stoppage-time error from Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier gifted Sunderland a point.

“The mindset of the team was good because right until the end we believed that it was possible and then it happened with a mistake,” Le Bris, who was appointed as Sunderland boss in July, said after the draw. “I think we deserved this draw.”

Tommy Watson loving life under Le Bris

One player who is particularly enjoying life at The Stadium of Light right now is youngster Tommy Watson. The 21-year-old winger, who came through Sunderland’s academy, has been a regular feature in Le Bris’ matchday squads this season, despite not having too many minutes to strut his stuff in front of fans.

He made his first-team debut in a 2-1 defeat to Watford in late September, coming on as a late substitute, and has since made two further cameos against Derby and Leeds. Speaking with Sunderland’s official website, Watson spoke of his delight at finally being given a chance to shine on the big stage.

Talking about making the transition to the first-team under his new manager, Watson said: “It’s a bit of a jump up. The games in the Championship are more organised and teams are set up better and harder to break down so you get fewer chances.

“It’s class to be honest. I’ve been waiting a long time for the opportunity. I’ve been on the fringes for quite some time, but the idea of working towards more first-team minutes is a real target.”

Poveda injury update dampens Sunderland mood

Leeds forward Ian Poveda.

Life might be looking up for Watson at the moment, but for Ian Poveda, things aren’t so great. The Colombia international, who joined Sunderland in the summer from Leeds United, has seen his start to life on Wearside hampered by injuries, limiting him to just 44 minutes of Championship action so far this season.

Speaking with the media ahead of last week’s draw with Leeds, Le Bris revealed that he will now have to make do without Poveda for a further “four to six weeks” after the 24-year-old suffered yet another injury setback.

“It’s a shame,” Le Bris said. “But the Championship is long, we still have 38 games to play. Ian is going to be helpful for the team, but he is going to need time to recover.”

Liam Dawson takes five as nine Notts wickets fall in final session to send Hampshire top of table

Mullaney dubs Ageas Bowl pitch “unacceptable” as Vince says Championship “is in our hands”

Nine wickets in the final session meant Hampshire beat Nottinghamshire to leapfrog them at the top of the County Championship table and put them in pole position to win their first title since 1973. Hampshire’s captain, James Vince, announced, “the Championshipis in our hands”, but there could be trouble for his side after Nottinghamshire skipper Steven Mullaney dubbed the Ageas Bowl pitch, “unacceptable for a first-class game”.Spinners Liam Dawson and Felix Organ both took season’s bests, with for 45 and 3 for 22 respectively, as Nottinghamshire’s final eight wickets fell in 30 overs as Hampshire won by 122 runs. Depending on the result between Yorkshire and Warwickshire tomorrow, Hampshire’s fixture against Lancashire next week could be a straight shootout for the title. Meanwhile, defeat for Nottinghamshire sees them slip to third in the table but only 6.5 points from top spot after the title race was blown wide open in Southampton.Watching a home team bowl themselves to victory is one of cricket’s greatest pleasures. Each wicket brings an explosion of joy and tangible progress compared to the prolonged mental anguish of witnessing a chase. The ripples of applause that accompany a boundary arereplaced by roars of jubilation as another wicket falls. That the crowd witnessed anything at all was a surprise in itself. The forecast had been apocalyptic as recently as the day before and as of 9:30am it was grey and horrible. At a guess, the 25,000 seater, international cricket venue had an official attendance at that point of one, as a single brave soul sat in the stands reading his book. However, his optimism was well rewarded. The skies cleared and an early decision was made to start play at 1pm which saw hundreds filter into the ground. From a position of no hope we all of a sudden had the pleasant surprise of an intriguing day’s play ahead. It was the cricket fan’s equivalent of pulling on an old pair of trousers and finding a fiver in the pocket.Related

Hampshire were resuming the day on 133 on 7 and 204 runs ahead with Brad Wheal and Keith Barker at the crease. Barker is perhaps one of the most competent cricketers in the country while being one of the least visually stimulating. He bats with absolute simplicity and bowls with refined skill as opposed to express pace. He also wears trousers three sizes too small and red socks that are constantly on show. This morning, he added 18 crucial runs to his overnight total by taking the attack to Nottinghamshire’s bowlers and his 29 lifted Hampshire to their lead of 250 that in the end proved too much. For Notts, Liam Patterson-White was the pick of the bowlers as he produced a career-best performance of 5 for 41 to follow his maiden first-class century against Somerset last week. However, the problem for Nottinghamshire was that the reason for his success would soon become the reason for their demise. The ball had started spinning. The 250 Notts required for victory would be the highest score of the match. However, while it would be a challenge, it didn’t seem altogether impossible. And at 64 for 1, the mood in the ground was tense. The reason for Nottinghamshire’s strong start had been the aggression of Ben Duckett. Dawson’s introduction had prompted Duckett to whack him out of the attack as soon as possible. Sweeps were followed by reverse sweeps which were followed by paddle sweeps. Dawson’s second over went for 10 runs and he wouldn’t be seen again until after Duckett had departed.Seam had appeared relatively ineffective up to this point, the nagging lines and lengths of Barker and Mohammad Abbas proving merely irritating to the Nottinghamshire batters as opposed to problematic. In his tenth over, however, Abbas found some genuine movement. He rapped Duckett on the pads with a ball that seamed in and pleaded with umpire Martin Saggers in a combination of certainty and desperation. Not out. He then beat Duckett’s outside edge with one thatmoved away and had a long conversation with him that was presumably entirely polite and not at all questioning his apparent inability to make contact with the ball. The over had an air of something about to happen and, sure enough two balls later, it did. Abbas struck Duckett on the pad again and it was out. The crowd wanted it. Hampshire wanted it. It was theatre. Sometimes in cricket, you’re simply the victim of momentum sucking you in and your demise is just collateral to what the occasion demands and deserves. Today, Duckett was collateral. As the umpire’s finger rose, Abbas roared in the direction of Duckett. As soon as Duckett left, spin returned and Dawson found sharp turn, producing excellent deliveries to have Clarke and Mullaney caught at slip. Such was his success that Hampshire brought on the off-spin of Organ at the other end and between them they took the remaining eight Notts wickets. Yes, it was a collapse, but sometimes in cricket, you’re simply the victim of momentum sucking you in, and your demise is just collateralto what the occasion demands and deserves.”I don’t think we can fault any effort from the lads,” Mullaney said. “I thought at the toss they got it right, but a couple of decisions didn’t go our way, if I am honest it wasn’t a great pitch, personally I thought it was unacceptable for a first-class game.”We knew it was going to be a result pitch and Hampshire got it. But we are still in with a chance of winning the County Championship. If we look at it in isolation, we dropped five catches in their first innings and didn’t bowl great in the second half of their first innings. But ultimately we weren’t good enough and Hampshire deserved the win.”Watching a home team bowl themselves to victory is one of cricket’s greatest pleasures. Today, Notts turned out to be collateral.
