Spurs could axe Johnson by unleashing "outstanding" academy teen instead

This season has gone from bad to worse for Tottenham Hotspur, and we are only four games in.

On Sunday afternoon, Ange Postecoglou’s side fell to a 1-0 defeat to bitter rivals Arsenal and, as things stand, have picked up just four points from a possible 12 in the Premier League.

Unfortunately for the Australian, there were several stand-out performers on the day for all the wrong reasons, including Brennan Johnson.

The Welshman has struggled this season, and while he could still come good, he should be dropped for the League Cup clash with Coventry City and replaced with a dynamic young talent who has a bright future ahead of him.

Johnson's recent form

Spurs paid around £47.5m to Nottingham Forest for Johnson’s services last summer, and while he started slowly, he did end his debut campaign in North London with a reasonably respectable haul of five goals and ten assists in 34 games, equating to a goal involvement once every 2.26 games.

Brennan Johnson for Tottenham

However, in the four games he has played this season, the Welshman has failed to score or assist a single goal and hasn’t looked particularly dangerous at any point.

For example, across those four matches, he has only amassed an expected goals figure of 0.79, an expected assists figure of 0.24, and just 0.80 shots on target per game, which would go some way toward explaining why he’s not produced a goal involvement just yet.

Moreover, in his player ratings after yesterday’s match, football.london’s Spurs correspondent Alasdair Gold awarded the 23-year-old just a 5/10 because while he was ‘swinging in low crosses,’ none of them were especially dangerous, and when presented with chances himself, he wasted them.

In all, Johnson just hasn’t impressed yet this season, and he should, therefore, be dropped for the game against Coventry, and in his place, Ange should start a youngster who could be a future superstar.

The surprise player who could replace Johnson

Yes, the youngster in question is 17-year-old Mikey Moore, who looks like he could be one of the most exciting youngsters in English football at the moment, at least based on his form at the youth level and how he’s been spoken about.

However, before we get to that, yes, the Southwark-born gem has primarily played off the left wing in his short career so far. Still, he has shown a level of flexibility by starting in attacking midfield, centre midfield and even at centre-forward in the past.

Moreover, considering he is right-footed, it seems unlikely he’d turn down the chance of first-team minutes just because he’d be playing off the right.

In fact, his youth record is so outstanding that we have no doubt he’d thrive anywhere across the frontline in Postecoglou’s attacking system.

For example, in 33 appearances across various junior sides, the “outstanding” prospect, as dubbed by Spurs writer John Wenham, has scored 20 goals and provided 15 assists, meaning he’s averaging a goal involvement every 0.94 games, which is outrageously impressive.

Moreover, he was given two short cameo appearances towards the end of last season when he was still just 16, which signals just how highly the club currently rate him, and with his tally of goals and assists at youth level, they are right to.

Ultimately, Johnson has failed to impress so far this season, and while Moore has less experience playing off the right, he should be given his first start against Coventry tomorrow night; if he’s as good as people believe him to be, then he’s old enough as well.

Lyndon James and Steven Mullaney ride their luck to frustrate Essex once more

Joe Clarke resumes after retiring hurt with wrist injury to reach unbeaten half-century

Recent history repeated itself as Steven Mullaney and Lyndon James proved thorns in Essex’s side for the second time this season at Chelmsford, the pair’s 117-run fourth-wicket partnership continuing on from the 123 they added in Nottinghamshire’s innings victory at Trent Bridge in the reverse fixture.Today’s effort came at a pace more akin to red-ball cricket – 52 overs as opposed 30.3 – but just as before, both made half-centuries. Shortly thereafter, they both fell guiding balls to Alastair Cook at slip in quick succession, as if a long-time married couple dying of broken hearts.Joe Clarke too passed fifty, having earlier retired not out. He returned with a flurry of six boundaries in 21 balls off Peter Siddle, playing “downright beautifully” as one independent observer noted and finishing unbeaten on 57. It meant Notts, closing on 248 for 6, have laid solid foundations in a game that looks set to be a top-of-the table slow burner. There was also some excitement of an unusual kind for the locals, a decent proportion of whom reached the obligatory shade of scarlet by close. And it wasn’t just the rare sight of Paul Walter and Ryan ten Doeschate operating in tandem shortly before tea.Walter – a giant left-arm allrounder who bats more than he bowls these days – first struck James’ helmet with a ball that rose sharply. After receiving treatment, the batter continued. An over later, umpire Ian Blackwell proposed a conscious uncoupling of bowler and ball after Walter released his second beamer. Both were accidental, one each at James and Mullaney, and he had the grace to offend with the first ball of his over, ensuring an unblemished scorecard. An ‘I was there’ moment for the 600 who passed through the gates? Maybe not, but at least that many were allowed as part of a pilot event: tomorrow, it’s back to 200.Related

Harmer: 'Teams are getting smarter against us'

Electing to bat, Nottinghamshire’s top-order Bens, Slater and Compton, traded early boundaries. But having taken 25 from the game’s first 3.3 overs, Compton nicked Siddle to slip. Two runs later, he trapped a third Ben – Duckett – in front, though he didn’t much like the decision. Slater then took a shine to Shane Snater, three boundaries coming in quick succession. But bounding in from an odd angle to come around the wicket – Snater got revenge removing Slater lbw. Again, the decision appeared to come as a surprise.Out came a long-sleeved James at 48 for 3, who, having limbered up as if about to pole vault, was nearly heading straight back from whence he came. A vociferous lbw appeal was turned down but when Clarke took a blow on the bottom hand from Sam Cook and was forced off, Essex sensed a collapse.James and Mullaney had other ideas, not that they found it easy. James struggled early, chipping a rare Harmer full toss just shy of Cook at mid-off. He later nicked between Harmer and Nick Browne, socially distancing at second slip and gully as Siddle let out an anguished cry.But there were some nice strokes too, a glorious checked on-drive off Siddle the pick of them. An outside edge moved him to 49, and his fourth half-century of the summer came from 145 balls. Shortly after tea, he finally fell victim to Siddle who had worked him over all day.Mullaney is one of those players who always seems to make runs, although he should have been mulling over a disappointing effort. He had made four when Alastair Cook shelled a sharp catch at first slip, and six when the ball popped out of a diving Nick Browne’s hands. Browne appeared to have clung on at cover, but landing on the matting protecting next week’s T20 pitch proved fatal.Jamie Porter was rested with Shane Snater preferred•Getty Images

It was an unusually reserved knock, a pulled boundary off Sam Cook eventually taking him into double figures after 62 balls, but it was needfully responsible, and he still managed the only six of the day when Harmer dropped short. In the evening sunshine, Cook returned to bowl a fine new-ball spell, the wicket of Tom Moores just reward for 23 overs of toil. Harmer, though, went wicketless, his drought now extending beyond 73 overs. With the stakes high for the defending champions, it seemed odd that Jamie Porter was rotated out of their side. The logic was sound, Snater having claimed a career-best 7 for 89 at Trent Bridge last month, but after a mixed season (10 wickets at a cost of 51.30 in his first six games), Porter returned to form with seven wickets at Chester-le-Street last week – and Essex’s next four-day game is not until July.True, they started five points ahead of Nottinghamshire in second, but they have played one more game. And should these teams qualify as top two, they would each carry through half the points earned off the other into September’s top division. The onus, then, is on Essex to force a result – much for Tom Westley to ponder tonight.

Aston Villa send officials to scout £63m double signing, Emery’s a big fan

Aston Villa, led by sporting director Monchi, have officials at a Champions League game on Wednesday night to watch two players Unai Emery is personally keen on, according to a recent report.

Villa got their own Champions League campaign underway on Tuesday as they brushed Young Boys aside in a comfortable 3-0 win, and the Midlands side are looking to use the competition to scout future transfers.

The Villans have made a strong start to the campaign, winning three of their first four games of the Premier League season, and they have won their opening Champions League match to boot. But that isn’t stopping Emery and co. from looking at the free agent market.

It has been reported that Villa are interested in signing Oumar Solet, who has just become a free agent after having his contract terminated by Red Bull Salzburg on Saturday. The player entered the final year of his contract with the Austrian side, but they have taken it upon themselves to let the defender leave now.

That is said to have put clubs on alert, with Nottingham Forest, Wolves and West Ham also keen, while Liverpool, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur were said to have looked at the player during the summer, but it remains to be seen if they are still interested.

While Villa weigh up a move for Solet, the Premier League side are now also sending officials out into Europe as they take a closer look at two players participating in the Champions League.

Monchi sends Aston Villa officials to investigate £63m double signing

According to Caught Offside, Aston Villa will have scouts watching Girona pair Viktor Tsygankov and Miguel Gutierrez in tonight’s game against Paris Saint-Germain. As well as Villa having officials at the game, Liverpool and Arsenal are also said to be sending scouts to watch the highly rated duo against the French champions.

The report states that both attacking midfielder Tsygankov and left-back Gutierrez have caught the eye of Emery, and the Spaniard is said to be appreciative of their talents. It goes on to add that while it would put Girona at a disadvantage, as they are two very important players, they would be open to selling the pair if the right offers were to arrive in January.

It is claimed that if both players were to leave, it could bring in over €75 million, which is roughly £63 million. Tsygankov has been with the La Liga side since January 2023, when he joined the club from Dynamo Kyiv, while Gutierrez joined in August 2022 from Real Madrid.

Sri Lanka looking for special effort against India

It is not yet clear if Shaw and Suryakumar will be available for the second T20I

Andrew Fidel Fernando26-Jul-2021

Shikhar Dhawan flays on the off side•SLC

Big pictureSri Lanka have lost 13 of their last 14 completed matches. Although this is not India’s main team – and there may be further changes following Krunal Pandya* testing positive for Covid-19 – they are more experienced in the format than Sri Lanka, and won comfortably on Sunday. So how do the hosts turn this series around? With a T20 World Cup coming up late in the year, how do they turn their whole game around? On Sunday’s evidence, it is Sri Lanka’s middle order that needs the most work. With Dasun Shanaka out of form, and Wanindu Hasaranga having so far failed to provide the kinds of innings he produced in England, they have been short of firepower through the middle and late stages. In the first match, only Minod Bhanuka (10 off 7) and Charith Asalanka (44 off 26) struck at more than 120.India, you suspect, will feel as if they didn’t bat particularly well in that first match, and yet, their bowlers were good enough to defend their 164 for 5. Bhuvneshwar Kumar ended up with the most wickets, but as has been the case through the tour, Yuzvendra Chahal has troubled Sri Lanka most – some flat out failing to read him, others yet to work out how to score against him, as he gains substantial turn from the Khettarama surface and varies his pace effectively. On the batting front, each of the top four – Prithvi Shaw, Shikhar Dhawan, Sanju Samson, and Suryakumar Yadav – has been in decent touch this tour.Form guide (completed matches, most recent first)Sri Lanka LLLLLIndia WWWLWIn the spotlightLike any new captain, Dasun Shanaka wants respect in the dressing room. So far on India’s visit, though, he has not quite found his best form with the bat, failing to produce those explosive, finishing innings. It is India’s wristspin that has usually worked against him – Chahal getting him twice in the ODIs, and Varun Chakravarthy having him stumped on Sunday. If he can overcome this apparent weakness, a boundary-laden innings would do Shanaka, and by extension the team, a world of good.Hardik Pandya made headlines in Sri Lanka, first for giving Chamika Karunaratne (who describes Hardik as a role model) his bat before the first match, and then singing along to the Sri Lankan national anthem. This has been enough to win hearts on the island, but you suspect he is not particularly satisfied with that. His batting form seems to have deserted him, and his bowling has been only marginally better. He also dropped a straightforward catch on Sunday. He is generally a cricketer of such soaring confidence it seems almost unthinkable he could be feeling down about his game. But he’s got only two innings left to rediscover some of that hitting ability.Pitch and conditionsThe surface is likely to be good for batting again, though it will take turn, as all Khettarama tracks do. Colombo has had heavy rain on Monday, and there is a chance of bad weather interrupting the match, but there should be enough play to constitute a match.Team newsKrunal and eight others identified as his close contacts are now isolating to prevent further spread of the virus. So India’s XI for this game is going to involve a lot of guesswork. Additionally, it is not totally clear whether Shaw and Suryakumar are available, given they have been called up to the Test squad in England. But after the first T20I, Dhawan did say he expected them to be available, so we’ll go with his word.India (possible): 1 Prithvi Shaw, 2 Shikhar Dhawan (capt), 3 Sanju Samson, 4 Suryakumar Yadav, 5 Ishan Kishan (wk), 6 Hardik Pandya, 7 K Gowtham, 8 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 9 Deepak Chahar, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal, 11 Varun ChakravarthyYou would have thought Ashen Bandara batted himself out of the XI with his nine off 19 in the first match, but with Bhanuka Rajapaksa still likely to be out with a finger injury, and Asalanka also doubtful now with a hamstring complaint, Sri Lanka are running out of batters in the squad. Sadeera Samarawickrama may come in.Sri Lanka (probable): 1 Avishka Fernando, 2 Minod Bhanuka (wk), 3 Sadeera Samarawickrama, 4 Dhananjaya de Silva, 5 Ashen Bandara, 6 Dasun Shanaka (capt.), 7 Wanindu Hasaranga, 8 Chamika Karunaratne, 9 Isuru Udana, 10 Dushmantha Chameera, 11 Akila DananjayaStats and trivia Despite having played 43 innings in the format, Shanaka’s T20I strike rate is 108. India have now won 11 of their last 12 completed T20Is against Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka’s three top T20I runscorers since 2016 – Kusal Perera, Thisara Perera, and Danushka Gunathilaka – are all unavailable for this series. Kusal is out through injury, Gunathilaka is suspended, and Thisara retired earlier in the year.

Why Arsenal now want £52m Juventus star Dušan Vlahović thanks to Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta personally wants his side to bring in a prolific goalscorer after not signing one in the summer window, and it is believed that the Gunners are planning to move for one name in particular next year.

The strikers linked with 2025 moves to Arsenal

Sporting director Edu Gaspar did opt to bring in a new forward option before summer deadline day – winger Raheem Sterling on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea – but the transfer chief and his recruitment team ended the window with no deal for an out-and-out striker.

Why Arsenal are now open to selling "world-class" player as soon as January

Edu and Arteta could decide to offload.

ByEmilio Galantini Sep 24, 2024

That wasn’t for lack of trying, as Arsenal were involved in a public race to sign RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, but the Slovenia hitman rejected all moves elsewhere in favour of a contract extension at his current club.

Sesko has a “gentleman’s agreement” with Leipzig that he will be allowed to leave in 2025 or 2026, according to Fabrizio Romano, and some reports have claimed that Edu is already planning a 2025 swoop for Sesko with contact already made.

The 21-year-old is just one of a few centre-forwards linked with moves to the Emirates next year, though. Indeed, there are rumours that Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram is a target for Arteta heading into 2025, while Aston Villa star Jhon Duran is being considered by Arsenal as an option.

Meanwhile, the most ambitious move of them all would be a mid-season bid for Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres. The former Coventry City ace has been in absolutely scintillating form since joining the Portuguese heavyweights last summer – scoring 54 goals and racking up 18 assists in 58 total appearances – and is rivalling Man City’s Erling Haaland in terms of proficiency.

Gyokeres is said to be on Arsenal’s agenda heading into January, but Sporting are set to demand the entirety of his £84 million release clause.

“A €100 million clause (£84m) and whether it can be met depends on the player’s current situation, age, and whether there is more than one club in the running,” said Sporting president Frederico Varandas in an interview with Record (via The Metro).

“I’ve seen inferior players being transferred for over €100m, great players for under €100m. Sporting is happy to have Viktor, and he is happy here. During the transfer market, there wasn’t a day without news saying that Viktor was leaving.

“The transfer market closed and these questions continue. But hey, we live with it and that’s how it will be.”

The Sweden international will be a marquee purchase, and a potentially difficult deal. However, a more astute alternative has emerged in the form of a familiar face to Arsenal supporters – Juventus striker Dušan Vlahović.

Arsenal planning 2025 move for Dusan Vlahovic

According to TEAMtalk, Arsenal are planning a 2025 move for Vlahovic because Arteta is personally targeting a prolific goalscorer for his Premier League title-chasing squad.

Vlahovic was a target for Arsenal in 2022, before he joined Juventus in a deal worth £67 million, and he’s slowly started to justify that price tag. The 24-year-old scored just 10 league goals in his first full season with the Old Lady, but finished last campaign with 18 goals and three assists in all competitions.

The Serbian’s deal expires in 2026, and talks over a new deal have apparently stalled – gifting Arsenal an opportunity to strike a cut-price move next summer. Some media sources believe that Juve have set an asking price of £52 million for Vlahovic, but this could well drop if a new contract can’t be agreed.

He’d be a slight gamble considering his lack of Premier League experience and how he took a while to settle at Juve, but pundit Micah Richards has previously hailed the striker’s “lightning” speed.

“I have watched him a couple of times now,” Richards told BBC Radio Five Live in 2021 (via The Independent). “He is lightning. It’s ridiculous. He has got 16 in 18 this season. His left foot is like a wand. I am telling you now, he is everything, he is everything you need.”

Atlético-MG e Athletico-PR voltam a campo na próxima quarta-feira, às 21h30, na Arena da Baixada. O confronto é válido pelo jogo da volta da final da Copa do Brasil e terá transmissão em tempo real do LANCE!.
