Chelsea Showing Interest In £13m Defender For Potter

Chelsea are keen on a deal to sign Hajduk Split defender Luka Vuskovic this summer, according to reports.

Who is Vuskovic?

The Croatian is a promising young centre-back who has been largely playing his football for his club’s U19s side, but following his high standard of performances, has recently made the breakthrough into the senior first-team set-up, notching five appearances to date. The 16-year-old’s contract with Ivan Leko’s outfit isn’t set to expire until 2026, and despite him still being in the early stages of development and discovering his potential as a professional, has been generating interest ahead of the upcoming window.

Since Todd Boehly’s arrival at Stamford Bridge, the owner has been known for identifying younger prospects and bringing them to the capital as he maps out what he wants the long-term future of his club to look like, and it appears that the talented teen is firmly on his radar as someone he wants to secure for Graham Potter.

According to 90min, Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and Newcastle are all “showing an interest” in wanting to sign Vuskovic ahead of the 2023/24 campaign. Premier League rivals Manchester City have already “opened the bidding” having submitted an offer worth €12m (£10m), with Paris Saint-Germain another suitor to have tabled an unknown proposal.

Hajduk are “expected to agree a sale” this summer but are in “no rush” to reach an agreement, with them hoping to secure a fee of closer to €15m (£13m) for their prized asset. PSG, Lyon, Benfica, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are additionally “keen” to wrap up a deal, but wherever he ends up, it’s stated that his preference would be to remain with his current club for one more season.

Chelsea manager Graham Potter.

Should Chelsea sign Vuskovic?

Vuskovic is still at such a young age and therefore would more than likely be a signing purely for the academy to begin with – or potentially to return to his current club on loan – but he would certainly be an exciting acquisition for the first-team future of Chelsea.

The 6 foot 3 colossus is a rock at the heart of the backline with his physical and aerial presence, but is also equally as strong at the opposite end of the pitch having scored nine goals in 23 appearances across all competitions this season, highlighting the threat he provides from set pieces.

Vuskovic has also already made a name for himself on the international stage with five caps for Croatia’s U17s and this form has seen him lauded an “elite talent” by football scout Jacek Kulig, so he’s sure to be one to watch in the months ahead.

Eddie Howe Shares Exciting Newcastle Transfer Insight

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe spent the international break scouting potential summer transfer targets for the Tyneside club.

What do Newcastle need in the summer?

Reports would suggest the Magpies will be entering the summer market with midfielders on their mind as the Toon reportedly aim to bring in two further recruits.

This comes on the back of the January transfer window which was believed to have left the 45-year-old concerned after seeing his options in midfield deplete.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, journalist Lee Ryder has reported back from Howe's press conference on Friday where he implied he spent the break researching potential summer targets:

"The good news is for Eddie Howe he's used the international break very wisely. Said he's already started scouting, or certainly looking at players that he has in mind for the summer during the last couple of weeks, when he's had that extra time to do it."

Who are Newcastle targeting in the summer?

There have been strong indications that Newcastle hold an interest in the Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay ahead of the summer window.

And if that is the case, then they will certainly have been pleased with what the saw from the Scotland midfielder in his two international games at Hampden Park.

The 26-year-old played in both of Scotland's Euro 2024 qualifiers and in both games against Cyprus and Spain led his side to victory with a brace in each game (via Transfermarkt).

Leicester City's James Maddison warms up for England ahead of their Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine.

It is also believed Newcastle will carry their interest in James Maddison into the summer window having previously failed to land the Leicester City star last year.

Maddison is enjoying a sensational campaign at the King Power Stadium where he has provided a seriously impressive return of nine goals and six assists in the Premier League (via Transfermarkt).

However, Howe will not have been able to take too much from his international break having played 86 minutes for England in their comfortable victory against Ukraine and only featuring on the bench against Italy.

But there will be more than enough evidence on display from his league campaign which would be able to convince Howe that he is a player who could seriously improve the Newcastle side.

In comparison to a player like Joelinton, the difference in their attacking output is night and day with Maddison offering significantly more shot-creating actions per game (via Fbref).

Having been rated at £60m last summer, it will still be a potential risk for Newcastle to take given his injury issues experienced at Leicester.

Newcastle's recruitment since PIF's arrival has been fairly solid so far and it seems they are hoping to continue that trend over the upcoming summer transfer window.

62 y/o Not Keen On West Ham Manager Contract Offer

Insider ExWHUEmployee has revealed that possible West Ham United manager target Rafa Benitez wants a longer contract than the club are willing to offer.

What's the latest on Rafa Benitez and West Ham?

With just nine Premier League games left to play, it's safe to say that it has been quite a rocky season for the Hammers regardless of what happens over the coming weeks.

Indeed, the Irons are currently caught in an unexpected relegation battle, 14th in the division, just three points above the bottom three.

For the last few months, it's felt as if manager David Moyes has perpetually been on the brink but the 59-year-old has so far been backed by the board.

David Moyes stands on the sidelines in West Ham United's Europa Conference League clash against AEK Larnaca.

It now turns out, perhaps the club have been unwilling to sack the coach as one of their preferred potential replacements hasn't been open to what was on the table at West Ham should he arrive.

Indeed, while speaking on the latest The West Ham Way podcast, Ex revealed that Benitez supposedly wants a long-term contract but the board aren't so keen on that.

The insider explained (10:50): "Apparently Rafa Benitez is another manager that we've considered, but he wants a long-term contract and we only wanted to give him six months."

Why won't Benitez take the West Ham manager job?

Seeing as Moyes has been under pressure for quite some time now – in December he was booed by his own fans at the London Stadium – discussions about a future manager may have been going on for months.

With that in mind, the club may have approached Benitez with the idea of just giving him until the summer to help steady to the club and potentially prove himself – hence the six-month offer.

By the sounds of it, though, the 62-year-old Spaniard wasn't on board with that. Interestingly enough, his name also came up when linked with the Leicester City job.

The Foxes have gone for Dean Smith now, who will stay until the end of the season, and so maybe Benitez was also offered that interim role but turned it down as he may have done with West Ham.

He certainly has spoken about his ability to be picky with the job offers he gets. In an interview with the Daily Mail recently he said: “The good thing I have is that because I have managed so many years and because I was successful, I can decide.

“I have had around 20 offers since I left Everton. National teams, different teams in Asia, in the Emirates, in Mexico. National teams everywhere.

“Some teams in England, some teams in Spain. The reality is you need to find the right one, the team that will allow you to build.”

And so this certainly backs up Ex's claim that the Spaniard simply wasn't keen on the short-term offer made to him by West Ham.

Man Utd’s £120k-p/w Gem Was Imperious vs Forest

Manchester United took another step towards securing Champions League qualification with a commanding victory over relegation strugglers Nottingham Forest on Sunday afternoon, with that 2-0 win marking a fine weekend in which top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United both slipped up.

Despite having had a mounting injury list heading into the trip to the City Ground – with that only exacerbated by the loss of Marcel Sabitzer in the warm-up – the Red Devils put that to one side to deservedly seal the points yesterday, with fleet-footed enigma, Antony bagging a goal and an assist amid what was a fine collective performance.

Although the Brazilian was heavily involved in United’s two goals on the day, it was teammate Bruno Fernandes who truly stole the show in his playmaking berth, with the Portugal international racking up six key passes as a marker of his relentless, attacking threat.

The 28-year-old – who led the way with a standout match rating of 9.1 as per Sofascore – was hailed as “pure quality” and a “striker’s dream” by club legend Roy Keane following that classy showing, with the former Sporting CP man also unfortunate not to have walked away with a goal for himself, after repeatedly being denied by the sprawling Keylor Navas.

With Erik ten Hag’s side having largely dominated proceedings with Fernandes pulling the strings – enjoying 68% possession – the visitors were also in need of a strong showing defensively, as the returning Victor Lindelof took charge of a rather makeshift back four.

How did Lindelof perform against Forest?

Fears were likely brewing among United supporters following the news prior to the match that Lisandro Martinez is set to be out for the remainder of the season, while centre-back colleague Raphael Varane is also likely to be absent over the coming weeks, with the pair having been forced off during the midweek draw with Sevilla.

The loss of Ten Hag’s starting defensive duo was further compounded by the continued absence of Luke Shaw who missed the trip to Nottingham, with that further limiting the possible options at the heart of the backline.

As such, the former Ajax boss was forced to offer a nod back to the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regime by partnering the aforementioned Lindelof alongside club captain Harry Maguire, with the duo having previously been rather peripheral figures in the Premier League this term.

While Maguire notably endured a shaky start – having picked up an early booking for wrestling Taiwo Awoniyi to the ground and almost giving away a penalty for handball – it was the Sweden international who truly stepped up, having been simply “imperious” throughout the contest, according to writer Dominic Booth.

The former Benfica ace made a truly “unflappable return” to the side – in the words of Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst – on what was just his sixth league start of the season, notably winning four of his five total duels as a sign of the 28-year-old’s defensive dominance.

Man United's Victor Lindelof

The calm and composed defender was also a real asset on the ball after enjoying a standout 95% pass accuracy rate from his 73 touches, while also showcasing a willingness to drive forward from deep after completing both of his attempted dribbles.

As Luckhurst noted in his post-match, player ratings piece for MEN, Lindelof ‘barely gave the Forest forwards a kick’ such was the remarkable nature of his performance, with the £120k-per-week rock undoubtedly helping to ease the loss of both Martinez and Varane.

Of course, doubts remain over the 58-cap gem’s long-term future at Old Trafford amid talk of a summer departure, although on the evidence of Sunday’s performance, he can certainly be an asset in the short-term at least.

£60k p/w "Superstar" Aware Of Arsenal Interest

Arsenal's reported summer target Declan Rice made no secrets about his post-match discussion with the Gunners manager Mikel Arteta.

Does Declan Rice want to join Arsenal?

The north London side have enjoyed an impressive 2022/23 campaign under their Spanish coach where they have put together a solid push for the Premier League title.

However, over the last two weeks, there have been indications that this title charge could be on the verge of collapsing with two-goal leads thrown away against Liverpool and West Ham United.

But it seems as if they are already looking ahead to the summer transfer window as their project under Arteta may need further reinforcements to solidify them as regular title competitors.

One name who has been linked with a serious interest from the north London club is West Ham's midfield general, Rice, who put in a solid shift on Sunday.

And after the game at the London Stadium, the £60k-per-week Rice was captured sharing an embrace with the Spaniard amid the transfer speculation.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Dean Jones has commented on the England midfielder not being concerned about the perception on his discussion with Arteta ahead of the summer window:

"What I think is interesting is that he (Rice) didn't care about being so public about those moments. He knows the stories are out there.

"But in his mind, he's given West Ham absolutely everything. And he's got nothing to hide in this situation. End of the day, he's making a career for himself."

Should Arsenal go all out for Rice?

Perhaps one of the surprise packages in this season's Premier League campaign has been Granit Xhaka in the middle of the Arsenal side.

The Swiss midfielder has even been booed off the pitch by his own fans in the past but he has received a lot of praise over recent months for his turnaround in north London.

However, he operates the midfield alongside Thomas Partey who has established himself in the side since his arrival from Atletico Madrid.

Granit Xhaka looks on as Arsenal blow their two-goal lead against West Ham United in the Premier League.

So it will provide Arteta with an interesting headache if Rice is to join over the summer given the Gunners already have such a strong midfield.

Rice has been hailed as a "superstar" by Bianca Westwood and it's clear to see why when he ranks inside the top ninth percentile for both clearances and interceptions (via FBref).

This is a player who could seriously improve the Arsenal midfield with their strength in depth taking a huge boost if Xhaka was willing to play a rotational role.

Rice (2.27) has more than doubled the number of tackles per 90 minutes that Xhaka (1.06) has returned this season with a much higher tackles-won percentage too (via FBref).

But it will leave an interesting dynamic in the camp and it would be intriguing to see whether – at 30 years old – Xhaka would be willing to take up a lesser role in the squad.

Leeds: £20k-p/w Ace Must Start vs Leicester

Leeds United are currently gearing up for what could be a potentially pivotal game in their season, with the Yorkshire side set to face off against fellow relegation strugglers Leicester City on Tuesday evening.

That crunch clash with the Foxes comes amid what has been a dismal run for the Whites of late, having now lost three successive Premier League games following the weekend defeat to Fulham.

That worrying losing streak will likely have heaped the pressure on manager Javi Gracia heading into tomorrow's encounter, with the Spaniard needing to conjure up something different to stop the rot against the Foxes.

One key selection decision that the former Watford man will have to make is with regard to the goalkeeping ranks, with it perhaps time for summer arrival, Joel Robles to make his first top-flight appearance for the club.

Will Robles start against Leicester?

The potential need for a change in the sticks has come amid the woes of current number one, Illan Meslier, with the 23-year-old having come under fire for his display at Craven Cottage.

The young Frenchman did make a handful of important stops in that 2-1 defeat, although he was arguably culpable for both of the home side's goals, with those errors proving 'so costly', as per the Yorkshire Evening Post's Graham Smyth.

Speaking in the aftermath of that loss at Craven Cottage, BT Sport pundit Joe Cole stated that it would be a "positive move" to take the struggling asset out of the starting lineup, even if it would be a "big call" to hand the reins to the aforementioned Robles instead.

Former Leeds man Simon Walton has revealed his doubts over whether the latter man is actually "ready" to come into the side, although the pundit also stated that the 32-year-old "may be good enough" to help ease the club's goalkeeping woes.

Hailed as an "incredible teacher" by teammate Marc Roca, Robles has made just two first-team appearances so far this season for the Whites, featuring against Cardiff City and Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, respectively.

While the former Everton man is rather untested at Elland Road, he does have plenty of "experience" – as per Walton – having previously made 51 Premier League appearances during his time at Goodison Park and with Wigan Athletic, keeping 17 clean sheets in that time.

That previous record should suggest that it would not be a total gamble to give the £20k-per-week veteran the nod for the visit of Dean Smith's men, with Meslier – who has now shipped 13 goals in his last three league outings – arguably needing to come "out of the firing line", as per Walton.

On the evidence of the 6 foot 6 stopper's recent displays, Robles seemingly can't do much worse, can he?
