Kusal Mendis: 'Think the future of Test cricket is to not play out many dot balls'

He brings ODI tempo to Test cricket, hitting 140 at a strike rate of 73 on a day in which Sri Lanka scored at over four an over

Andrew Fidel Fernando16-Apr-2023Kusal Mendis has a theory: Test batting is becoming more and more like ODI batting. This came at the end of a day in which Sri Lanka scored at 4.38 an over on a supremely flat surface at Galle. But still, in the Bazball era, perhaps everyone else is ramping up scoring rates too.On day one, against Ireland, Mendis made 140 at a strike rate of 73. But he was the slower of Sri Lanka’s two centurions – Dimuth Karunaratne hit 179 at a strike rate of 76.”When I play red-ball cricket, I start more cautiously and don’t attack as much, but I think that’s about the only difference,” Mendis said. “When I settle, I bat normally, like I would in a one-dayer – I look for singles.”Mendis ramped a bouncer for four when he was in the nineties, so it does feel as if he believes what he’s saying. He’d also got to fifty with a six down the ground.”I think the future of Test cricket is to not play out so many dot balls – teams are playing to win. As the gaps open up, a lot of people are looking for runs. It’s like one-dayers. Apart from the start, I don’t see a big difference in the ODI and Test formats.”Related

Report – Karunaratne, K Mendis lead SL's progress

On the personal front, this was Mendis’ first Test hundred in three years, his last having come against Zimbabwe in January 2020. He’d suffered both a discipline-related suspension, and a woeful run of form since then, having collected four ducks in a row between the end of 2020 and the start of 2021. He’d hit six fifties in 15 innings since he returned to the Test side in 2022, however.”I’m really happy about the hundred. For a long time, the team only got fifties from me,” Mendis said. “There were times in which the team lost out on a hundred from me. I was able to do what the team needed from me. I was able to give them 100%, and I’m pleased about that. The pitch is good, so it’s good for my batting and for my form.”In all three formats in the last year I’ve been in the runs. I’ve played about eight years for the national team. I think that experience is helping me to do well. It’s hard to do well immediately. It takes time. Now I think the team and the country will benefit from that.”Mendis had hit three fifties across four Test innings, two ODI knocks, and three T20Is, in New Zealand. He said it had been tough to adjust to Sri Lanka’s heat and humidity in April (Test cricket is not ordinarily played at this time, on the island). But perhaps, Ireland – playing their first Test here – also could not offer up as stiff a challenge on a pitch Mendis himself described as unusually flat.”In New Zealand the conditions are very different – the lengths, the pace,” Mendis recalled. “A lot of things are different. When you come back home, though, you don’t need to practice that much to readjust. You bat a couple of days and bat how you want to again. It’s hard to compare Ireland bowlers to New Zealand’s bowlers, but they are coming with a different plan. These bowlers are not attacking as much – they are trying to bowl line and length consistently. So it’s different.”It’s hotter here in Galle than it is for our matches usually. We also only had seven days since we got back from New Zealand to readjustto this heat. With that it’s tough for batters and bowlers to play big innings or bowl big spells.”

Rangers can find their new Igamane in 17-year-old who's "making waves"

Glasgow Rangers supporters haven’t had much to shout about this season. Victories over Fenerbahçe and then Celtic before the international break were just brief respites in what has been an otherwise dismal campaign.

The emergence of Hamza Igamane has perhaps been one of the brightest aspects of the whole season, with the summer signing settling into life in Glasgow with ease.

His performances have attracted plenty of attention from afar, meaning he could leave the Ibrox side sooner rather than later.

Why Hamza Igamane could leave Rangers

For a transfer fee of just £1.7m, Igamane moved from Morocco to Glasgow last summer, a move which certainly raised a few eyebrows.

Fast-forward several months into March 2025 and the striker has since scored 14 goals across 37 appearances for the Gers, including a stunning last-minute winner against Celtic last week.

Similar in stature to Alfredo Morelos, Igamane is much more flexible, being able to operate as a number ten or even out wide if so required by the manager.

He was recently called up to the senior Morocco squad for their matches against Niger and Tanzania, making his debut against the former on Friday.

With Everton showing interest in the youngster, he could turn out to be the club’s next big sale.

If that happens to be this summer, whoever arrives as the new manager will have some work to do to source a replacement.

They might have money to spend in the summer transfer window, but in terms of a long-term replacement, might Josh Gentles be the ideal solution?

Rangers already have their next Igamane

Gentles has made his way through the academy at Auchenhowie over the years before finally signing his first professional contract with the Gers in February 2023.

He scored the winner in the Scottish Youth Cup final during the 2023/24 season and has impressed for the U18s and B teams over the previous 12 months.

One popular Rangers fan media podcast said that Gentles was “making waves in the B team” when he turned 17 last September, also stating that the striker had a “big future ahead” for the Light Blues.

In January, the teenager joined Alloa Athletic on a six-month loan deal in order to gain some vital senior football and the move has worked a treat.

Across seven games for the League One outfit, the centre-forward has already scored twice while chipping in with an assist.

It only took him two games to open his account for the Wasps and he could turn out to be a great signing for the third-tier side.

This experience lower down the divisions will allow him to find out what it is like playing against men who might well be twice his age, giving the striker a chance to build up his confidence and strength.

Rangers star outshone "one of best players in the world" for his country

The international break came at precisely the right time for Glasgow Rangers. The Ibrox side had progressed to the quarter-finals of the Europa League before beating Celtic at Parkhead just three days later.

Barry Ferguson will have had a few days to enjoy those results, particularly the latter while keeping an eye on several players who are away representing their national teams.

Speaking of which, what have the boys in Light Blue been up to over the last week or so?

The Rangers players on international duty

It’s been a busy week or so for those at Rangers, travelling off on the globe. Perhaps the most notable national side inclusion was Hamza Igamane. His rampant form at Ibrox earned him his first call-up to the Morocco squad, making his debut against Niger in a World Cup qualifier.

Nedim Bajrami played 63 minutes against England on Friday evening, while Ianis Hagi and Vaclav Cerny both appeared for Romania and the Czech Republic in their recent international games.

Elsewhere, Tom Lawrence and Rabbi Matondo were called up for Wales, with the latter scoring the opener against Kazakhstan during a 3-1 victory. Lawrence failed to come off the bench.

John Souttar started both games against Greece for Scotland, as the 3-1 aggregate loss sent the nation back to League B.

It was a mixed bag for the Rangers contingent, but one player certainly made the most of his first international call-up…

Nico Raskin's incredible display for Belgium

Raskin has arguably been one of the Gers’ finest performers this season, none more so than in the recent Old Firm game when he dominated the midfield and scored the opener.

This led to him being called up for the Belgium squad for their Nations League double-header against Ukraine.

He came off the bench for the final ten minutes during the first leg during the 3-1 defeat, although he did succeed with 93% of his passes and won 100% of his aerial duels despite his limited time on the field.

Having to overcome a two-goal deficit, Raskin was awarded with his first start for Belgium as they defeated Ukranian 3-0 to remain in League A for the next Nations League campaign.

The Gers starlet claimed the Man of the Match award for his performance, which was outstanding to say the least. He completed 91% of his passes during the game, while also making one key pass, winning four of his five ground duels contested and making four tackles.

Deployed at the centre of a three-midfield, Raskin was one of the stars of the 3-0 win, outshining fellow players such as Hans Vanaken and even Manchester City superstar Kevin De Bruyne.

The latter was even hailed as “one of the best players in the world” by Rio Ferdinand just a few years ago and he provided an assist against Ukraine on Sunday evening.

Still, all the talk was about Raskin and how he settled into the midfield with ease, especially with pressure on the country to win by three goals or more to remain in the top division.

The 2026 World Cup starts in just 15 months. If Raskin can replicate these performances between now and then, he will surely be on the plane to North America. That’s for sure.

Hardik Pandya: 'If I had to lose, I don't mind losing to MS Dhoni'

Sanjay Manjrekar: ‘Titans showed they aren’t over-reliant on Shubman Gill’

After defending champions Gujarat Titans lost to Chennai Super Kings on the last ball of the IPL 2023 final in Ahmedabad, their captain Hardik Pandya said he didn’t mind losing to MS Dhoni, whom he considers his mentor. In a rain-affected game, it came down to CSK needing ten from two balls, and Ravindra Jadeja hit Mohit Sharma for a six and four to seal the win for his side.”I’m very happy for him [Dhoni],” Hardik said at the post-match presentation. “Destiny had this written for him. If I had to lose, I don’t mind losing to him. I said last year that good things happen to good people. I think he is one of the nicest people I have met. God has been kind to me, but I think God gave him a little more today.”Related

Cricketing gods forsake Gujarat Titans at last stretch

Dhoni vows to return for another IPL season if his body allows it

After being put in, Titans posted 214 for 4, thanks to 21-year-old Sai Sudharsan’s 47-ball 96. But rain, and then wet conditions, reduced CSK’s task to 171 required from 15 overs. When asked if rain hampered his side’s chances, Hardik said: “I’m not one of those guys who make excuses. CSK played better cricket than us. The way we batted was definitely amazing. Special mention to Sai as well. Someone that young coming and playing at this stage the kind of innings he played. I just wish him well and he is going to do wonders in his life.”While Titans couldn’t defend their title, there were many positives throughout the season. Shubman Gill finished the tournament with 890 runs, the second-most for a batter in an IPL season. Mohammed Shami, with 28 wickets, was the leading wicket-taker this year, and Mohit and Rashid Khan were the joint-second with 27 each.”I am really happy for the guys,” he said. “We’ve always been about backing them, and making sure they get the best out of them. Their success has been their success. The way they have prepared, the way they have taken the responsibility… Mohit, Shami, Rashid, everyone… the way they put their hand up and said, ‘Don’t worry, we got you.’ So very happy for the boys.”I think we tick a lot of boxes, and we play with our heart. We’ve always been a team that has stood together and backed each other. Really proud of the way they have played the whole season. No one gave up. They kept fighting. In our team, there’s a motto: we win together and we lose together. Maybe it was one of those days today.”A special mention for the coaching staff as well. They have been fantastic. They have had sleepless nights making sure the boys are in a good frame of mind. I can’t ask anything more from them.”

He's like Isak: Liverpool plot move for "sensational" £55m Diaz upgrade

Liverpool’s main goal between now and the rest of the season is to clinch the Premier League title for just the second time in the club’s history, and the first in front of their home supporters.

The Reds are a whopping 12 points clear of Arsenal, in second place, with just nine matches left to play in the division, which shows that they are well on course to secure the trophy.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah has played a significant role in the club’s rise to the Premier League summit, with a staggering haul of 27 goals and 17 assists in the top-flight.

The Egypt international stepped up to score two goals from the penalty spot in Arne Slot’s side’s last match in the division, beating Southampton 3-1.

Salah’s goals from a right wing position have been crucial, as they were against the Saints, and have helped to mask the problem that the Reds have had in the number nine position.

Slot has not had a consistent number nine who has started week-in-week-out, as Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, and Luis Diaz have all had turns in that role.

Why Liverpool have a striker problem

Salah is the only player in the Liverpool squad, despite their success in the Premier League this season, to hit double figures for goals in the league so far, with no other forward on more than nine league strikes.

Diaz, who has started 11 matches as a striker, has scored nine times in 28 matches in the division, but he has performed about on par with his expected tally, based on xG.

As you can see in the table above, the Colombia international has scored nine goals from 9.18 xG, whilst Jota and Nunez have also underperformed in front of goal.

This suggests that Slot has a problem in the striker position because he does not have a reliable, go-to, option, which may be why the club have been linked with a move for Newcastle United centre-forward Alexander Isak – who scored against Liverpool in the League Cup final earlier this month.

The Sweden international, who is reportedly valued at more than £150m, has scored 19 goals from 15.55 xG in the Premier League so far this season for the Magpies, which suggests that he is the kind of ruthless finisher that the Reds currently lack.

Whilst the likes of Diaz, Jota, and Nunez have failed to make the most of the chances that have fallen their way, Isak can elevate his team with his exceptional finishing quality by outperforming his xG.

Liverpool are, however, reportedly eyeing up another forward who is like the Swedish ace, but far less expensive, as well as being a big upgrade on Luis Diaz.

Liverpool chasing deal for Serie A star

According to Caught Offside, the Premier League leaders are one of a number of clubs chasing a deal to sign 2024 Ballon d’Or nominee Ademola Lookman from Atalanta at the end of the season.

The report claims that Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, and Arsenal are also showing an interest in the Nigeria international, as Slot plots a move to sign the former Fulham and Everton man.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It states that Lookman is ‘expected’ to complete a move away from the Italian side when the summer transfer window officially opens for business, with a host of Premier League sides seemingly ready to compete for his services.

Caught Offside adds that the Serie A outfit are set to demand a fee of around £55m to allow the electric forward to leave, which means that he would be almost £100m cheaper than signing Isak would later this year.

Atalanta'sAdemolaLookmancelebrates scoring their second goal with Atalanta's Marten de Roon and Atalanta's Lazar Samardzic

Slot and Michael Edwards must, now, push to secure a deal for Lookman ahead of the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Arsenal in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Why Ademola Lookman would improve Liverpool's team

The English-born talent has been in phenomenal form for Atalanta in Italy in recent seasons, so much so that FBref lists Isak as one of the most similar players to him based on their respective statistics over the past 365 days.

As you can see in the chart above, both players excel in similar areas of the game as forward players, with Lookman even offering more non-penalty goals and more Expected Assisted Goals per 90.

The Atalanta star’s finishing quality this season suggests that he could bring the ruthless edge that Isak has to Anfield, with 13 goals from 9.11 xG in the Serie A – outperforming his xG by more than any Liverpool player aside from Salah.

Lookman, who scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in the Serie A last season, could come in to be an Isak-esque finisher for Slot, despite costing £95m less.

The 27-year-old star, who was hailed as “sensational” by pundit Jack Collins, can play out wide on the left or through the middle as a centre-forward, which suggests that he could come in as a direct upgrade on Diaz – who offers similar positional flexibility.

As you can see in the table above, Lookman has racked up 18 goals from just 14.31 xG in the Serie A and Champions League combined this term, whilst Diaz has failed to outperform his xG for Liverpool.

Liverpool winger Luis Diaz

Meanwhile, the Colombian forward has only created seven ‘big chances’ in the Premier League and the Champions League combined, which suggests that the Atalanta ace also offers more than him as a creative threat for his side.

These statistics suggest that Liverpool would improve their team by signing Lookman to be an upgrade on Diaz, due to his superior finishing and goalscoring, as well as his ability to create high-quality chances for his teammates more frequently.

He'd be as important as Alvarez: Liverpool "held talks" to sign £40m star

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing this star as well as Julian Alvarez.

Therefore, Edwards and Slot must sign the Isak-esque star this summer to improve the team and solve their finishing problems at the top end of the pitch, which may be particularly important if Salah leaves when his contract expires this summer.

Balderson's maiden first-class century illuminates grey day at Edgbaston

Home side trails by 148 with five wickets down after Will Rhodes 82, Dan Mousley 45*

ECB Reporters Network20-Jul-2023Warwickshire 197 for 5 (Rhodes 82, Mousley 45*) trail Lancashire 327 (Balderson 116, Bailey 75) by 148 runsGeorge Balderson’s maiden first-class century illuminated a grey second day as Warwickshire and Lancashire grind towards a draw in their LV=Insurance County Championship match at Edgbaston. On a cloudy morning, Lancashire all-rounder Balderson extended his overnight 94 to 116 out of his side’s 327 all out before the home side replied with 179 for 5.On a slow pitch, diligence has been required throughout from batters and Balderson showed plenty of it, spending 44 balls in the nineties before reaching his richly-deserved ton. Warwickshire captain Will Rhodes then showed similar resolve to compile 82 from 168 balls. With time lost to the weather on day two and a forecast suggesting little or no play on the fourth day, this match appears doomed to a draw already with batters forced on to the defensive by capable seam bowling on a slow pitch. After resuming on 295 for 7 on the second morning, Lancashire lost Tom Bailey for 75 to the second ball, lbw to a big inswinger from Hamza Mir. That concluded a partnership of 145 in 45 overs between Bailey and Balderson and when Will Williams quickly fell the same way, Balderson still required five runs for his maiden ton with just last man Jack Morley for company.Unlike at Lord’s in 1895, when Sammy Woods generously served up a deliberate leg-side full toss so that WG Grace could reach his hundredth hundred, Balderson was made to earn every run towards his milestone before he edged Olly Hannon-Dalby to the boundary at third.Morley stuck around while 30 were added and doubled his previous first-class run tally of nine before nicking a slog at Danny Briggs. In reply, Warwickshire’s openers fell in the first seven overs, both deciding too late to leave the ball as Alex Davies played on to Williams and Rob Yates edged Bailey behind. Rhodes and Sam Hain then added 68 in 28 overs either side of a rain break, Hain arriving into double-figures after 69 balls before falling, strangled down the leg side off Balderson, for 15 off 79.At 82 for 3, further quick wickets would have moved Lancashire into a strong position, but Rhodes and Dan Mousley batted watchfully to add 77 in 22 overs. Bailey continued his impressive match by trapping Rhodes lbw and Ed Barnard tickled Balderson down the leg side to the keeper but Mousley, after a skittish start, settled to play with authority and reach the close unbeaten on 45.
