DJ Rabada in the house: Kagiso Rabada is on song again – with help from Dad

Quick who helped SA get their T20 series against Australia back on track reveals the importance of music in his life

Firdose Moonda24-Feb-2020When Kagiso Rabada earned his fourth active demerit point in a 24-month period and was suspended from the final Test against England last month, his father sent him a little something to make him feel better and it’s not what you might expect.”I sent him a song about the ICC. To cheer him up,” Dr Mpho Rabada said, at the launch of his new track, , a collaboration with family friend and music student Motswedi Modiba at the Red Bull Studios in Cape Town. The song was inspired by the idea of being able to take flight and its message of positivity is quite unlike the one Rabada senior composed on the fly when he heard that his son had fallen foul of the game’s governing body again. Neither of the Rabadas would share the content but Mpho Rabada said it was “quite hilarious,” and hoped that “maybe one day,” his son would release it. Judging by the look on Kagiso Rabada’s face it will be a long time before that happens. But, asked if he could sing something to the ICC, Rabada brightened up and offered a few chords. “Please don’t judge me,” he started, before the room gave way to giggles. At least everyone could see the lighter side of what has been a tough summer for South African cricket and Kagiso Rabada, who, at 24 years old, is already five years into his international career. In that time, injuries to more experienced quicks meant that he was quickly elevated to leader of the pack while he was trying to find a level of aggression that intimidated opposition but did not tip him over the ICC’s code of conduct edge.Kagiso Rabada roars in celebration after bowling Joe Root•Marco Longari/AFP/GettyIt’s little wonder he needs an outlet off the field and he has found it on the turntables. “Music has always been a part of me and my family. It’s something to get away and just think about something else,” Rabada Jnr said. His father shares a passion for the beat and the pair spend time together experimenting with sounds, mixing tracks and seeing what happens. That’s where Modiba comes in. She is the daughter of Mpho Rabada’s best friend and an aspiring singer, who is influenced by gospel music. While Modiba and Mpho have taken the step up and released a single, Kagiso has been working with DJ Da Capo on some house music, which the pair have yet to put the finishing touches on, given their busy schedules. So for now, music remains a hobby for Kagiso Rabada, and a motivator as he goes about trying to get the South African team and his own performances back on track. Like many sportsmen, he can be spotted with headphones on when he gets off the team bus; most of the time, he is listening to traditional tunes. “For me to get inspiration, that comes from tribal music, African tribal. That gets me going, the different sounds, the chants, it’s like I am bonding with my ancestors,” he said. With music such an important part of his process, it’s not a surprise that he bonds with the crowd at St George’s Park, famed for their brass band. Last Sunday, when South Africa beat Australia in a tense T20 to square the series and Rabada bowled a decisive penultimate over, he could feel the fans acting as a 12th man.”The atmosphere was really electric. That was the first time in a while where I actually felt the crowd, other than being at the Wanderers,” he said. “The Wanderers is my favourite ground because of the electrical atmosphere. Yesterday was similar to what I felt at the Wanderers, it was a sell-out and the band came out and we were in it together.”Singer Motswedi Modiba, Kagiso Rabada and his father, Dr Mpho Rabada, at the launch of a new music track by Modiba and Rabada Snr•Firdose Moonda/ESPNcricinfo LtdThat is a rarity in South Africa, especially this season, when most of the spectators were traveling English supporters. During the white-ball games that changed, with capacity crowds of mostly local supporters and it is set to stay that way for the deciding T20 against Australia on Wednesday and the three ODIs that follow.Generally, though, South Africans don’t fill out cricket grounds and Kagiso Rabada thinks the team’s performances have something to do with it. “We have to win and we have to entertain the crowd,” he said “People need to feel an interest towards the game, even more of an interest than they feel already, to want to go the stadium and witness international cricket. If they realise that the skill level is going up, the professionalism is going up and they are going to be entertained, they might come.”Though South Africa’s results have been poor of late, even when they were No.1 in the world Test crowds were thin, which could be attributed to anything from lack of interest to lack of time to lack of marketing. Cricket South Africa has been embroiled in various crises since the failed T20 Global League almost three years ago and has lost major sponsors. At best, they have appeared out of touch with their audience, at worst, uninterested.Kagiso Rabada spent time last week experiencing the opposite when he traveled to the NBA All-Star game. While his highlight was seeing LeBron James because he “admires watching other sportsmen doing well in their craft,” he also saw first-hand how a sport can speak the same language as its supporters.”What fascinated me the most was how it’s marketed and how it’s really fresh and they keep with the times,” he said. “It’s got everybody talking about it. It doesn’t have an age barrier. If you are older, you can go there and feel young because that energy is electrifying. Music and sport go together in America, the in-thing is trap music and the hip culture. It just feels as if the culture is so inviting and they are always staying on top of it. There is tradition, yes but they keep with the times.”Sounds like a message to cricket to get the DJs in and they know the Rabada household has a few they can start with.

Nketiah has been looking to leave Arsenal this summer as he is not part of Mikel Arteta's plans for the future. He had been linked with a move to Marseille but the Ligue 1 side failed to reach an agreement with the Gunners. The 25-year-old was then linked with a move to Nottingham Forest, who had agreed terms with Arsenal, but they could not entice the striker.

Crystal Palace are now close to agreeing a deal with Arsenal for Nketiah for a reported fee of £25 million ($33m) plus £5m ($6.6m) in add-ons, reports. Nketiah is expected to accept the move as per the report and the deal is expected to go through smoothly.

Crystal Palace saw experienced striker Jordan Ayew join Leicester City, leaving them with only two strikers in their squad in the form of Jean-Philippe Mateta and the out-of-favour Odsonne Edouard. As such, it is possible that Nketiah would move into the number nine spot straightaway for manager Oliver Glasner.

Tamim Iqbal to take over as Bangladesh ODI captain

No tenure specified but BCB president says Tamim is looked at as a “long-term” captain

Mohammad Isam08-Mar-2020Tamim Iqbal has been appointed Bangladesh’s ODI captain, it was announced after a BCB meeting on Sunday. He takes over from Mashrafe Mortaza, who finished his five-year stint with the recently concluded Zimbabwe series.BCB president Nazmul Hassan didn’t specify the length of Tamim’s tenure, but said he was looked at as Bangladesh’s “long-term” captain.”After the meeting today, the board has unanimously decided that Tamim Iqbal will be Bangladesh’s ODI captain,” Hassan said. “He will be the captain for the long term as we have moved away from our decision to name another captain next year. We are not giving any guarantees, but he is our long term captain.”Tamim described Mortaza as “a model of inspiration” and asked for support through good times and bad, as captain.”This is a massive honour for me. I thank the BCB for trusting me with this responsibility. I am aware that I have huge shoes to fill as Masrafe Bin Mortaza [sic] has been a true great for Bangladesh cricket and a model of inspiration as captain for me and all the cricketers,” Tamim said.”The journey that begins now will have its ups and downs. We all want the Bangladesh ODI Team to be successful and when we are victorious it is a celebration for the entire nation. I hope the Board, the fans and the media will support me through the tough moments as well as during the good times.”Bangladesh’s next ODI assignment is a one-off game against Pakistan in Karachi on April 1. The other one-cricket they will play this year is a three-match series in Ireland in May.There were two clear contenders for the position after Mortaza vacated the spot last Thursday. The BCB’s decision was between Mahmudullah and Tamim, although Mushfiqur Rahim was also talked about in some circles. Shakib Al Hasan’s return to international cricket is also looming in the background, with the allrounder expected to come back in October this year after serving his one-year ban.Bangladesh will be part of the ICC’s one-day league from next year, which means the four ODIs scheduled this year will give Tamim the only window he has to get a feel for the job as long-term captain before the league starts.Last week, Tamim became the first Bangladesh batsman to reach 7,000 ODI runs during the first ODI against Zimbabwe, and is regarded as one of the architects of Bangladesh’s rise in ODI cricket in the last five years.Tamim has so far led Bangladesh in just three ODIs out of the 207 he has played, when he replaced an injured Mortaza last July against Sri Lanka in an away series.

Newcastle have been shortchanged by a star who’s worth less than Longstaff

Newcastle United invested heavily in the playing squad last summer, looking to build on the club's success of qualifying for the Champions League during the 2022/23 campaign.

The Magpies finished fourth in the Premier League, receiving automatic qualification to the group stages for the current season, with the club splashing over £125m on new players to improve the squad and add depth to Eddie Howe's side.

Players such as Tino Livramento and Sandro Tonali both arrived at St James' Park, with the latter failing to make any impact on the side after receiving a ten-month ban for breaking gambling rules during his time at AC Milan.

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.

However, during the same window, the club – backed by the Saudi PIF – also forked out a hefty fee on another player, with the expectation he would be able to complete Howe's attack alongside Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak.

Nearly a year on from his arrival on Tyneside, the forward has struggled to maintain his fitness, with his market value taking a hit as a result.

Harvey Barnes' stats in 2023/24

After joining the club for a reported £38m from relegated side Leicester City, winger Harvey Barnes had a lot of potential to be Howe's missing piece in his attacking puzzle, but so far, he's yet to demonstrate it on a consistent basis.

The 26-year-old has only managed four goals and three assists in 19 matches across all competitions this campaign, in a year that has been plagued with injury setbacks.

Barnes has missed 31 games across all competitions since his move to Tyneside, preventing the attacker from making a huge stamp on his first 12 months at the club – with the former Leicester man unable to put any sort of consistent run together under Howe.

This season alone, the longest run he's gone in the team without injury is six matches, a disappointing return considering the hefty fee the club paid for his signature last summer.

He's shown glimpses of his quality in certain matches, including in the stunning 4-3 comeback victory against West Ham United at the end of March, scoring twice off the substitutes bench.

However, unfortunately for the Magpies supporters, they've failed to see his talent on a regular basis, with the attacker's market value dropping significantly as a result of his frequent absences with injuries.

Harvey Barnes' market value in 2024

Less than a year after joining the Magpies, Barnes now only has a market value of £12.8m, as per Football Observatory, a figure that is £13m less than teammate and academy graduate, Sean Longstaff, who's currently valued at £25m – after costing the club nothing.

Whilst the winger's value may seem harsh given his injury issues, the club have been shortchanged by the deal with the Foxes, with the attacker yet to demonstrate exactly why the club decided to fork out such a huge fee for him.

Harvey Barnes

He's undoubtedly a talented player, who has the ability to be a real nuisance in the attacking third of the pitch – having registered 77 goals and assists in 187 games for his prior employers. However, he needs to be more reliable with his fitness if he is to be a success at St James' Park.

With the 2023/24 season coming to a close, the club needs to make sure they can rely on Barnes for next season, to prevent the club from investing more money on another forward – something they may find tricky given their recent FFP worries.

Sourav Ganguly: BCCI 'optimistic' about holding IPL in empty stadiums in 2020

“The BCCI will shortly decide on the future course of action on this,” he said

Nagraj Gollapudi11-Jun-2020The BCCI is open to hosting the IPL in “empty stadiums” as long as the tournament is conducted in 2020. In a letter sent to the state associations on Wednesday, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said the board remained “optimistic” about the IPL which was postponed indefinitely in April in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.”The BCCI is working on all possible options to ensure that we are able to stage the IPL this year, even if it means playing the tournament in empty stadiums,” Ganguly said in the e-mail, accessed by ESPNcricinfo. “The fans, franchisees, players, broadcasters, sponsors and all other stakeholders are keenly looking forward to the possibility of IPL being hosted this year.”The IPL remains BCCI’s biggest money spinner annually, with the board deriving a large portion of its revenue from its lucrative league, thanks to the record media rights deal worth INR 16,347.5 crore (approx. US$ 2.55 billion) signed in 2017. If there is no IPL this year, the BCCI stands to lose around INR 4,000 crore (US$ 530 million approx.) from the media rights deal. The biggest challenge for the BCCI is finding a window for the IPL, which created a free window for itself in April-May owing to its success since 2008. However, with the fate of global tournaments like the Asia Cup, Men’s T20 World Cup and the series that form part of the World Test Championship hanging in balance, the IPL too remains undecided. In case the T20 World Cup gets postponed, the BCCI would want to capitalise on the window left vacant and is confident that it could put the tournament together in a short span of time, subject to permission from the Indian government. According to the data collated by the Indian government, the country currently has over 137,000 active cases of people infected by Covid-19, with over 8000 deaths.Indian sports minister Kiren Rijiju recently said that the fate of the IPL would be decided not by the BCCI, but the Indian government. “In India the government has to take a call and it will take a call depending on the situation,” Rijiju was quoted as saying in the media. “We cannot put health at risk just because we want to have a sporting event.”However, Rijju did not rule out India hosting the IPL behind closed doors if there was a sense of normalcy. “It is difficult to confirm dates but I am sure we will have some kind of sporting events this year. We have to learn to live with the situation where sporting events will have to be carried forward without spectators in stadiums and sports venues.”Both the franchises and players, including those from overseas, are enthusiastic and open about playing behind closed doors. During its meeting in March with the eight franchise owners, the BCCI had discussed various options including hosting the tournament without crowds in a few venues that would minimise travel and pose fewer logistical challenges.”Recently a lot of players, both from India and other countries, participating in IPL have also shown their keenness on being a part of this year IPL,” Ganguly said. “We are optimistic and the BCCI will shortly decide on the future course of action on this.”Ganguly also said the BCCI was on the verge of finalising guidelines for the return of cricket in India, and would be sharing them with the state associations. India’s domestic season begins in September, but state associations want clarity on what the calendar looks like. Recently, Rahul Johri, the BCCI chief executive, had indicated that the domestic calendar would see a revamp.”The Covid-19 virus is highly contagious and BCCI has taken cognizance of the same,” Ganguly said. “The BCCI is in the process of developing a Covid-19 Standard Operation Procedures (SOP) for all State Cricket Associations. Essentially, this SOP is being made with a view of providing our Members with a standard set of guidelines which will help the Associations to resume cricket in their respective areas. The BCCI has engaged medical specialists for the drafting of this SOP.”

Corberan must now ditch 4/10 West Brom man who made 4 accurate passes

West Bromwich Albion might well view this first leg stalemate against Southampton as a missed opportunity on the whole, with the Hawthorns acting as a fortress in the regular Championship season.

Boasting 15 home wins under Carlos Corberan during the bread and butter of league action before the tense playoffs got underway, the Baggies will now have to go to St. Mary's and pick up a result in a clash that will suit Russell Martin's men more back on their own turf.

Only having two shots on target all game will be the troubling statistic from a West Brom perspective, however, knowing that lone centre-forward Brandon Thomas-Asante flopped again on the big occasion.

Brandon Thomas-Asante's performance in numbers

Touch-and-go over whether he'd be kept in his manager's first-team thoughts for the opening playoff tie owing to a recent drop-off in form, Thomas-Asante's struggles as the lone striker were clear for all to see in his anonymous showing against the Saints.

Only amassing 15 touches of the ball, which saw just four accurate passes be played, the likes of Jan Bednarek and Taylor Harwood-Bellis at the back had a routine afternoon in the West Midlands dealing with the ex-Salford City striker who was weak and unassuming in his attacking play.

The best chance of the game would fall to Thomas-Asante's brighter partner up top in Grady Diangana, who was denied by Alex McCarthy instinctively from point-blank range, with the lacklustre 25-year-old only registering one shot in total himself which was blocked.

Birmingham World's Charlie Haffenden dished out a low 4/10 rating to the wasteful attacker consequently, stating that the striker – who has now bagged just two times in his last ten Baggies appearances – 'struggled' throughout.

The out-of-form number 21 could now finally be dropped from Corberan's XI for the second leg to come on the South Coast, therefore, with the Spaniard in the West Brom dug-out scrambling in his mind now as to who can lead the line to spearhead the promotion hopefuls to success on their travels away from Thomas-Asante.

The players that could replace Thomas-Asante

West Brom supporters would have been puzzled with the complete absence of Josh Maja for this goalless first-leg draw, with the injury-prone attacker edging closer to more action after battling back from being stuck in the treatment room recently.

There is a possibility that Corberan throws the ex-Sunderland man in at the deep end for the second clash at St. Mary's on Friday night now, attempting to spring a surprise on Martin's hosts in the process.

Away from this wildcard selection, the Baggies boss could opt to play Jed Wallace in this lone striker spot having got mild success out of the ex-Millwall man playing him here during the regular campaign – the experienced and versatile West Brom man does have six goal contributions when selected here from 12 games.

The adaptable 30-year-old was only afforded an eight-minute cameo against the Saints at the Hawthorns, with only three touches registered, but Corberan wouldn't hesitate to chuck him in from the start in such a crucial contest despite not starting him in the first leg.

Glancing at West Brom's record on their travels to St. Mary's in the past, the Baggies will go into the clash as slight underdogs which could result in a tweak from the manager in attack potentially being seen as a masterstroke if it pays off with Andreas Weimann even in contention to start after making up the numbers on the substitutes bench in the home clash.

Aiming to channel the side of December 2016 when they make the long trip to face the Saints this coming Friday, Corberan will hope whatever striker is selected can be a hero on the night.

'We're holding Newcastle back' – Gary Neville demands Premier League rule change so Magpies 'can get to Man City's level'

PSR 'holding Newcastle back'Neville wants change in lawsMagpies have Saudi backingWHAT HAPPENED?

Newcastle, alongside Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City, were struggling to comply with the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) this summer and were compelled to sell several homegrown talents to avoid punitive actions. While the Blues parted ways with Conor Gallagher, the Magpies sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh. As per PSR, the money that the English clubs make from selling academy players are considered pure profit in their accounting books.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has urged the league to change their laws. Neville is against the idea of teams parting ways with players who come up through their youth system and also objected to the laws that prevent Newcastle from spending big despite having ultra-rich owners.

WHAT GARY NEVILLE SAID

Speaking to , the ex-Manchester United defender said, "I think it's [been] the most bizarre transfer window. I think PSR now is starting to be applied by the Premier League and that's why we're seeing a lot of clubs, including Manchester United, having to sort of navigate around selling players that maybe they wouldn't want to. PSR was never designed to make clubs sell their best academy players and that's what we're seeing, so something needs to change dramatically in this next 12 months in terms of the rules."

He added, "Also, Newcastle I think should be able to invest in the squad. Again, PSR needs changing so owner investment is allowed so Newcastle can get to the level of Manchester City and other clubs. We can't just keep a thumb on club's heads and say, 'You're not going to invest'. What we have to do is do it with security and sustainability in mind. That means the owner funding might have to go in upfront, but you can't keep Newcastle back and we're holding them back at this point."

Cricket Australia to appoint mental health overseer

The position will report to the head of sports science Alex Kountouris

Daniel Brettig14-Jul-2020In the wake of 40 redundancies at Cricket Australia and more than 150 around the states in the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is some logic to the news that the first new job created at the downsized governing body will be devoted entirely to mental health.CA this week advertised for the role of mental health and wellbeing lead, to report to its head of sports science Alex Kountouris. It is a little less than a year since the AFL appointed its own head of mental health and wellbeing, Kate Hall, and the winter after Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson and Will Pucovski all made very public withdrawals from cricket to deal with their mental health. While Maxwell, Maddinson and Pucovski were all dealing with issues stemming one way or another from the unrelenting treadmill of constant cricket, its attendant pressures and risks, the more recent Covid-19 crisis has laid bare matters concerned with what happens when that particular schedule and the sporting business in general are brought to a shuddering halt by unforeseen external events. Both instances, though, have underlined the need for more focus on the area, the better to allow CA’s two dedicated sports psychologists, Michael Lloyd for the men’s team and Peter Clarke for the women’s team and pathways, to spend more time with individual cricketers and staff.Meanwhile the new role is geared at taking a broader approach to the area, whether that be in managing cases between CA, states and W/BBL clubs, updating the governing body’s approach according to new research, or evolving the remit beyond high performance to the whole of CA.”The new Mental Health and Wellbeing Lead will give a greater focus on mental health at Cricket Australia, giving us an individual resource dedicated to this area,” CA’s high performance chief Drew Ginn told ESPNcricinfo. “The role will also provide broader case management support for CA contracted players.”It’s a great chance to prioritise mental health. It will provide further reinforcement to our current psychologists working with our teams. To have a dedicated leader in a national role and having them focus on a national strategy, policy, future partnerships, critical case management and support for players and states is a positive step forward for the sport.Michael Lloyd (left) chats with Australia coach Justin Langer•Getty Images”This role is more important than ever, particularly in a world where mental health issues continue to be prevalent, particularly with the demands of elite cricket, Covid and all of the uncertainty. It’s crucial for us to provide the right support and environment for our players, coaches and staff, and this builds on fantastic work being done by Michael Lloyd and Peter Clarke.”Required qualifications for the role include post-graduate qualification in psychology/psychiatry, behavioural science, or a related field and clinical practice experience, in addition to senior management and case management expertise. One of the areas needing to be negotiated will be the varying approaches taken in each state association, where not every department has the same structure or resources regarding mental health or other areas. This has only been exacerbated by the aforementioned staff cuts, where only Cricket New South Wales has so far managed to steer clear of cost-cutting.At the same time, CA staff are still regaining their composure after the traumas of April, May and June, when 200 staff were stood down ahead of redundancies that also saw the departure of the chief executive Kevin Roberts amid widespread rancour between CA, the states and the players’ union.”We are looking for a senior mental health professional who has experience in systems leadership,” the position description states. “You will have expertise in the development and operationalisation of best practice mental health and wellbeing strategies, policy, governance and partnerships. In this role you will also be assisting Australian Cricket health professionals in case management.”Reporting to the Head of Sports Science & Medicine, you will bring your previous success in implementing best in class mental health and wellbeing outcomes. This is a pivotal strategic role and your success will be determined by your ability to influence outcomes across a complex stakeholder landscape.”

Rangers want another defender alongside Cordoba to replace £21k-a-week ace

Rangers reportedly want to sign another defender alongside Jose Cordoba this summer, this time replacing an outgoing £21,000-a-week Ibrox ace.

Jose Cordoba & other Rangers transfer rumours

The upcoming summer transfer window is an extremely important one for the Scottish Premiership giants, with a number of signings needed to help continue to close the gap on Celtic. It has been a great effort from Philippe Clement and his players in the 2023/24 title race, but a lack of depth has arguably contributed to them falling short in the end.

It looks as though Rangers are on the verge of completing their maiden signing of the summer, with Cordoba agreeing personal terms ahead of a move from Levski Sofia. The 22-year-old is seen as a promising young centre-back who can take the team forward.

Oscar Cortes joined Rangers on loan from Lens back in January, but his time at Ibrox has been injury-plagued to date, with only three starts in the league coming his way. Despite this, the club seem interested in signing him on a permanent basis, with the Colombian seemingly doing enough to convince them that he is worth persevering with.

Oscar Cortes

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland has arguably been the standout player in Scotland this season, with the 28-year-old also hoping to make an impact for Scotland at Euro 2024, and he is considered an option for the Gers. He grew up supporting them, so a move could appeal greatly, and he could provide Clement with the added firepower needed to take them to title glory next term.

The Scot isn't the only attacking ace being looked at by Rangers, however, with Rapid Bucuresti ace Albion Rrahmani also of interest to them, having scored 17 goals in just 26 appearances for his current club.

Rangers want to replace Borna Barisic

According to The Daily Record [via Ibrox News], Rangers want to sign a new left-back as a replacement for Borna Barisic in the summer window, with the £21,000-a-week ace set to leave at the end of the season.

The Croatian is believed to be close to completing a move to Turkish side Trabzonspor, bringing an end to an excellent six-year spell at Ibrox, during which time he has won one Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup title apiece.

This is encouraging to hear from a Rangers perspective, with left-back feeling like such an important area to focus on this summer, especially with Barisic departing.

It remains to be seen who will actually come in to fill the void left by the 31-year-old, but Fluminense ace Jefte is again mentioned as an option in this latest report. The 20-year-old has had a taste of European football during a loan spell at APOEL Nicosia, making 33 appearances for them, so Rangers wouldn't simply be bringing in a player who has only played in Brazil.

Rangers want to sign "promising" 20-year-old in permanent deal this summer

Talks are reportedly planned over a move.

ByHenry Jackson May 20, 2024

It is still early days, with the window not even opening yet, so there is no need to rush things, but if Clement sees Jefte as the best option moving forward, the manager has enough credit in the bank to be trusted.

Chelsea warmed up for the start of the new Women's Super League season with a 9-0 thrashing of Feyenoord on Saturday, while also losing Niamh Charles to injury. When it was pointed out to her that the victory eclipsed an 8-0 win against Bristol City in Hayes' last home game in charge of the Blues in May, the former Lyon boss quipped she would text her about the result.

"That’s not a competition, but I am going to text her to make sure she knows about the result! I am sure she will be happy for me and for the team especially," she said, laughing.

Bompastor has huge shoes to fill following Hayes' unprecedented success at Chelsea. The legendary Blues manager decided to step away from the west London outfit earlier this year to take up a role as United States women's national team manager. Now, the Frenchwoman will be tasked with delivering more trophies for Chelsea this season. While it won't be easy, her success of winning a whole heap of silverware at Lyon may put her in good steady for this big task ahead – and wins this like may help, too.
