Milan faced Roma Down UnderPulisic stayed in EuropeAvoided trip ahead of Copa AmericaWHAT HAPPENED?

The Rossoneri followed in the footsteps of Newcastle and Tottenham and headed Down Under for a friendly against Serie A rivals Roma. With Pulisic staying behind for commercial initiatives in Europe, Milan felt the full force of the team that finished four places below them in the league. Roma scored five times through five different goalscorers while Milan could only find two consolation strikes in Perth.

Although they were on the end of an embarrassing defeat, Milan remain one of the biggest clubs in world football and their trip to Australia was a great opportunity to connect with fans who rarely get the chance to see them play live. The players made sure to give their thanks after the match and completed a lap of honour along with the Roma players.

Most of Milan's players can now jet off for their holidays unless they are due to join up with their national teams. Pulisic will be joining the USMNT camp ahead of the Copa America in his home country. Several other stars, including Olivier Giroud, will be heading to Germany for Euro 2024.

Postecoglou makes big Bryan Gil decision after he refused to leave Spurs

While Spurs fans may understandably have focused on the new arrivals of centre-back Radu Dragusin and forward Timo Werner, Tottenham also embarked on something of a clearout in January, sending as many as seven first-team players out on loan, most notably Eric Dier (who joined Harry Kane at Bayern Munich).

Another player who Spurs planned to offload was winger Bryan Gil, who attracted interest from fellow Premier League side Brighton as well as Feyenoord in the Netherlands and Real Sociedad in his native Spain.

However, no transfer materialised, and Ange Postecoglou has now changed his plans for the 22-year-old as he tries to lead his side to Champions League qualification in his first season.

Postecoglou performs Gil U-turn

According to Football Insider, Postecoglou will now hand Gil "regular first-team minutes" until the end of the campaign. The player rejected every approach that was put on the table, seemingly determined to fight for his place in N17 instead.

Postecoglou is now prepared to give him another opportunity to prove himself, and ensure that, come the summer, Spurs aren't looking to find a new club for him once again.

Son return will intensify Gil task at Spurs

Back in 2021, Spurs parted with just under £22m and Erik Lamela to sign Gil, but he hasn't quite justified that exchange just yet. He's only played 42 games for the club across two and a half years, having spent the second half of the last two campaigns on loan in Spain with Valencia and then his former employers Sevilla.

Spurs already have their answer to Dominic Solanke in teenage "unit"

The London club will wait until summer to sign a striker but might already have the perfect solution this season.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 4, 2024

Most tellingly of all, just four of his 23 Premier League appearances to date have been starts, with two of those coming this term in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa and the 3-3 draw at Manchester City (where he came off at half-time). He's come off the bench a further eight times, and been an unused substitute on six occasions.

It feels as if things could go one of two ways from here. Either Postecoglou admires his resolve and he does enough to earn the manager's faith, or his decision backfires and he winds up on the auction block for a permanent transfer in the off-season. It's worth noting that, with Son-Heung min due to return from the Asian Cup later this month, his quest for regular minutes is about to become even harder.

Rohit, Rahul smash centuries; India jump to top of points table

Angelo Mathews’ third ODI hundred against India came in defeat, while Lasith Malinga ended his World Cup career conceding 82 runs

The Report by Varun Shetty06-Jul-2019
As it happenedIndia didn’t quite get to test their middle order one last time before the semi-final, but Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul put up India’s fourth century for the opening stand in the tournament, made centuries of their own, and helped India to 15 points at the end of the group stage as they galloped to a seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka.WATCH on Hotstar (India only): Highlights of India’s win over Sri LankaThe openers put on 189 of the 265 India were set, unleashing strokes that ranged from pristine to borderline outrageous. They were able to recreate a pace that resembled that of India’s regular opening pair, and it came about because of Rohit’s uncharacteristic early aggression.Rohit’s century was accurately capsulised in the 17th over of India’s chase. His strike rate had only briefly dipped below run-a-ball when he was on 46, and he sorted that out by launching Dhananjaya de Silva over wide long-off, feet firmly rooted on the pitch. That didn’t seem enough; a ball later, he skipped down the track, and brought out a clean swing from underneath the ball, sending it straight back over the bowler for the longest six of the day.Preceding them were eight fours of all makes – languid pokes through the covers, whips through midwicket, even a one-handed loft over mid-on. Through the course of the stand, Rohit did pretty much anything he wanted. On 99, he pulled a Kasun Rajitha off-stump delivery to the midwicket boundary to bring up the record for most centuries – crossing Kumar Sangakkara’s four – in a World Cup well after he had vaulted to the top of the run-scoring charts.WATCH on Hotstar (USA only): Full match highlightsRahul was more true to his theme in the tournament but managed to play out his plans longer than any previous innings. While still occasionally circumspect outside the off stump, he began with a string of glorious drives through the off side against the new ball. India’s scoring rate at the start was significantly helped as a result, with even Lasith Malinga enduring a difficult time against the two right-hand batsmen. Rahul’s own scoring rate slowed down in the midst of Rohit’s fluency, but he too chose to break the shackles against Dhananjaya. His kickstart also involved getting to fifty against Sri Lanka’s only spinner on the day, and then hitting him straight.Rahul’s century was brought up with more precision than power, though that was understandable: it was his first ODI hundred since his debut ton against Zimbabwe in 2016. Malinga did manage to dismiss though, Rahul gloving behind as he limboed against a short ball that kept tailing back. India needed another 21 to get at that point, and Virat Kohli was there to see them through to the end.Rohit Sharma becomes the first player to hit five centuries in a single World Cup•Getty ImagesIndia’s opening stand outdid the other century partnership on the day, a patient 124-run alliance for the fifth wicket between Angelo Mathews and Lahiru Thirimanne that kept Sri Lanka in the game after they had lost four wickets inside 12 overs. Sri Lanka’s most experienced batsmen had two jobs to do on the day – blunt India’s attack, aggressive fields and all, and try to give their bowlers a total to bowl at. They managed both, starting by playing low-risk shots and staying content scoring just over four an over for the first half of their partnership. Their first three boundaries together came after Kuldeep Yadav’s introduction – and against him – nearly 50 balls into the stand. Mathews was happy slashing the spinner through the off side on a pitch that offered a hint of grip and bounce. It was largely a batting-friendly surface and got easier and easier as the sun burst through in the middle of the day. Thirimanne couldn’t reap the benefits much past his fifty, but Mathews grew more dangerous as Dhananjaya stuck around with him. Mathews reverse-swept Kuldeep twice as he approached three-figures and continued punishing any width, of which there was plenty as India’s bowlers endured tepid second spells. Even the shot to bring up his third ODI century, all of which are against India, was a generous half-tracker that was carved over point. That innings, and that partnership came after India seemed to have sealed Sri Lanka’s fate much earlier in the day. Jasprit Bumrah had begun with two consecutive maidens, one of which contained the wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne, who edged behind on the angle. Bhuvneshwar Kumar didn’t quite hit his straps in overseas conditions though, and his day didn’t get any better when Kuldeep and Hardik Pandya had a moment of miscommunication as they got under a toe-ended loft from Kusal Perera; Hardik didn’t seem to hear the call at mid-on, and Kuldeep, the mid-off fielder who was closer to the line of the ball only mustered a weak flap at the ball with Hardik in his peripheral vision. But onto that vulnerability was Bumrah again, this time using the angle to induce a cut from Kusal, only to get his inside edge, which MS Dhoni grabbed onto. Kusal chose to walk as India contemplated a review, and he would be followed shortly by Kusal Mendis, who ran down at Ravindra Jadeja’s fourth ball of the day to be beaten in flight and stumped. Dhoni added a fourth dismissal – two fewer than Adam Gilchrist’s World Cup record of six – when Avishka Fernando gloved a slower bouncer to him but Sri Lanka’s collapse stopped at 55 for 4. It did prove vital though – 264 on a good batting surface was not going to trouble India. And it was the perfect representation of a disappointing tournament for them.

Mzansi Super League to stay on SABC network

Cricket South Africa had been trying to get SuperSport to broadcast the second season of the T20 tournament but it couldn’t be done

Liam Brickhill07-Aug-2019This year’s Mzansi Super League will once again be screened on , South Africa’s public broadcaster. There had been some speculation, especially ahead of the first edition of the MSL, that Cricket South Africa might look to as broadcaster, but they have ultimately stuck with once again, despite the lack of a financial incentive to do so. Last month the secured a R3.2 billion bailout from the government, and earlier this week it was announced that the broadcaster had failed to secure the rights for the country’s Premier Soccer League as it was not commercially viable. But CSA are short of other options.List of retained players

Paarl Rocks: Henry Davids, Cameron Delport, Bjorn Fortuin, Aiden Markram, Mangaliso Mosehle, Tabraiz Shamsi

“We only have literally two broadcasters in the country who can afford to broadcast cricket, and that’s and ,” chief executive Thabang Moroe said on Tuesday. “So you can imagine that CSA does not have much room to manoeuvre in terms of making decisions.”As things stand, we are lucky to find ourselves where we are, in the sense that we can broadcast international cricket both on free-to-air as well as pay TV. Obviously because none of them have exclusivity, we do not receive the same values as we would, had we given any of them exclusivity, but that’s the pain we have to take for wanting to spread the game.”As far as restructuring of commercial and broadcast deals is concerned, it’s difficult to say yes or no to that question now, the reason being the landscape that we operate in as far as the South African economy is concerned.”The second MSL will take place in November and December this year. The date for the player draft has not been announced yet, but it is expected to be shortly, as are the various South African and international marquee players.Dale Steyn is one of several Protea cricketers who have been retained by their franchises for this year’s tournament. More than 250 cricketers, including international stars, T20 specialists and Kolpak signings have entered the draft.”This is confirmation that MSL is now an established global brand that is taking its place at the head table alongside the other Global T20 events,” Moroe said. “We have drawn interest from around the world with players applying from virtually all the top tier international countries.”This will certainly be the biggest T20 event we have hosted since the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup that was staged here in 2007 and became the fore-runner of all the global T20 events that followed. We look forward to adding yet another highlight to our home international season that will be followed by the incoming tours by England and Australia.”

West Brom could ditch Thomas-Asante by starting "incredible" teenager

West Bromwich Albion would have been the happier of the two sides come full-time at Portman Road, Carlos Corberan's Baggies battling to a 2-2 draw versus Ipswich Town despite the hosts dominating for large spells.

Scoring two goals from just two shots on target is a very impressive statistic from the away side's perspective, although lone striker Brandon Thomas-Asante couldn't quite get on the scoresheet himself.

A passive display from the West Brom number 21 saw Corberan haul off the striker on the 56th minute mark, only for his replacement in Daryl Dike to heartbreakingly pick up another serious-looking injury moments after being introduced.

This could well throw up a striker selection dilemma for the Spanish boss to resolve, with Thomas-Asante in real danger of being dropped for tonight's game with Cardiff City regardless of Dike re-entering the Hawthorns treatment room.

Thomas-Asante's performance vs Ipswich in numbers

Thomas-Asante will have been left frustrated with how his time on the pitch against the Tractor Boys played out, with his barren patch in front of goal in the Championship stretching tothree games in a row now after his torrid showing at Portman Road.

Only managing 17 touches of the ball in total in Suffolk, the 25-year-old was isolated up top on his own with zero shots managed on Václav Hladký's shaky goal.

With a number of below-par performances before this no-show at Portman Road further troubling his cemented first-team spot – failing to win a single duel against Birmingham the game prior to this Ipswich draw – the time could be right for Corberan to give a young January recruit an opportunity to impress against the Bluebirds tonight ahead of Thomas-Asante.

Thomas-Asante's replacement at West Brom

Yet to be given time to really to cut his teeth at West Brom – only given one 28-minute run-out so far against Birmingham – the Baggies boss could ruffle a fair few feathers by chucking West Ham United loanee Callum Marshall into his lineup.

Having one effort blocked in that brief cameo at the Hawthorns against Tony Mowbray's Blues, Marshall will hope he can find the back of the net against Cardiff if selected to show he can score goals for fun in men's football and not just in the comforts of youth action.

Bagging a remarkable 19 goals from just 16 games playing for the West Ham U21s just this season, everyone with connections to West Brom will hope Marshall won't flounder making the step-up transitioning to the intense demands of Championship football.

With Thomas-Asante passenger-like in the past couple of second-tier games, and Dike facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines again with a ruptured Achilles tendon, Marshall will need to seize his opportunity when it comes his way.

Described as being an "incredible" talent by football scout Antonio Mango when emerging as a breakout star for the Hammers at youth level, Marshall would no doubt endear himself to his new fanbase if he could bag his first-ever Baggies goal against Cardiff.

The teenager could well see Dike pulling up with yet another injury as one way he can begin to make waves in the Baggies first team, able to push Thomas-Asante all the way for a starting spot as a consequence.

Gareth Southgate’s biggest Euro 2024 mistake has been exposed as England's left-back problem threatens to be their undoing

With Luke Shaw still working his way back to fitness, the manager's decision to snub other more natural options is looking increasingly unwise

Ask any England fan to pick one trait of Gareth Southgate’s managerial style and the words ‘risk’ and ‘averse’ are bound to come up. The manager’s cautious nature explains why he has always favoured having two holding midfielders and why he has been careful to call up players into his squad as soon as they start making a name for themselves at their club.

But lately he has thrown caution to the wind and gone against his usual nature. In March, he fast-tracked then-18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo into the squad after initially leaving him out. In May, he dispensed with long-time servants Jordan Henderson and Marcus Rashford for his provisional squad for Euro 2024, before also snubbing Jack Grealish for his final squad. He also brought in Adam Wharton despite him having less than four months of top-flight experience.

But the biggest risk Southgate took was including Luke Shaw in his squad for the Euros despite him being injured since February. And now that decision, coupled with the call to pick no other natural left-back as a back-up, is looking like the manager's biggest mistake…

GettyObvious shortcomings

Shaw’s continued absence means England have no left-footed full-backs in their 26-man squad, and that has been a real problem for the Three Lions in their messy start to their campaign in Germany. Kieran Trippier’s lack of suitability for the role could be seen in the warm-up games against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland, when England would look to play fast moves down the left flank, only for the Newcastle defender to slow the play down as he needed an extra touch to cross the ball with his right foot.

Trippier's ineptitude in the role has become even more pronounced in Germany, with him looking incapable of overlapping against Serbia or Denmark. Trippier – perhaps inhibited by a calf problem that he has been managing through the tournament – made very few runs forward, and when he did, his team-mates did not want to pass the ball to him. It meant that England only attacked down the right or the middle in either game, and it is no coincidence that both of the team’s goals have come from the right flank.

It is a huge contrast to the last two tournaments, when Shaw was fit and firing. England scored two of their most important goals at Euro 2020 down the left flank, with Shaw setting up Raheem Sterling in the last-16 win over Germany and the left-back himself scoring in the final against Italy after combining with Trippier.

Trippier also showed a lack of positional sense when Denmark scored their equaliser, as Harry Kane appeared in the left-back position and played an aimless pass that was intercepted.

AdvertisementGetty Mounting issues

Southgate was quick to acknowledge after the Denmark game that Shaw’s absence was a big factor in England’s underwhelming performances so far in Germany.

“It is clear in terms of the balance of the team that we don’t have our best left-back, so that denies you that balance,” he said. “But I think Tripps has done an incredible job for the team, his spirit and organisation and desire have helped us get over the line in the last couple of games. So that’s in no way a criticism of him, but it’s obviously going to be different – a right foot rather than a left.”

Trippier’s shortcomings at left-back have had a ripple effect on Phil Foden, who is accustomed to coming in off the wing for City as he has Nathan Ake or Josko Gvardiol over-lapping. So England have a double problem on the left flank, a right-footed player deployed at left-back and a left-winger who has no desire to play on the wing and who really sees himself as a No.10.

The problem is plain to see and is unlikely to get any better against Slovenia, as Shaw's return to full training on Monday was merely a sign of his fitness improving, rather than a signal that he will play in England's final group game.

Getty ImagesAlways a gamble

Shaw has been in a race against time to get fit for the tournament ever since injuring his hamstring during Manchester United’s game at Luton on February 18. He has not trained with his club since then, and in Germany he has been following an individual programme, leaving him unable to train with the rest of the group until the eve of the Slovenia clash.

It is hopelessly optimistic to think that after so long out he could be brought up to speed for the knockout phase, when the stakes will be higher and the opponents far tougher. It would be a gamble to expect any player to return to full fitness after so long out, but it is even crazier when that player is Shaw, whose career has been frequently disrupted by various injuries.

Shaw's injury nightmare began when he suffered a double limb fracture while playing for United against PSV in 2015. He later revealed that the horror tackle from Hector Moreno – which saw him sidelined for 11 months – almost led to him having his right leg amputated.

Since then, Shaw has suffered numerous separate injuries, above all muscle afflictions, limiting him to just 157 Premier League starts out of a potential 304 games.

(C)GettyImages'Absolute stinker'

Chris Sutton, never one to mince his words, tore into Southgate for gambling on Shaw’s fitness. “The Luke Shaw call from Gareth has been an absolute stinker,” the former England striker said on the ‘It’s All Kicking Off’ podcast.

“We’re now at a stage at the tournament when Luke Shaw is still doing his personal programme. In the knockout rounds is Gareth just going to throw in Shaw, who is pretty injury-prone anyway? How is he going to be at the level? That has been another mistake. England are lopsided, they are unbalanced and a large part of that is because Gareth has made the wrong call.”

To be fair to Southgate, England do have a severe lack of left-back options due to the injury problems of Shaw and Ben Chilwell, the latter being unable to play for Chelsea since April, though it is claimed that he would have been ready for the Euros if selected. While the Three Lions have three right-backs in their Euros squad plus Reece James (injured) and Ben White (unwilling to be selected), there is a dearth of left-backs across English football right now, and indeed around the world.

And part of that is due to how football has evolved over the last decade. Many of the best modern left-backs started out as left wingers, such as Jordi Alba and Alphonso Davies. But that route has been blocked off by the emergence of inverted wingers who play on the side of their weaker foot.

Romano shares update on Emery’s Aston Villa future amid Bayern interest

There may have been concern inside Aston Villa as soon as it emerged that Thomas Tuchel would be leaving Bayern Munich at the end of the season. Alongside Liverpool and Barcelona, another top European club was entering the manager market, and Unai Emery was bound to be hot property.

Sure enough, there were subsequently reports from Germany that Bayern are watching Emery, having seen his abilities first-hand when he knocked them out of the Champions League at the quarterfinal stage as the manager of Villarreal in 2021/22.

The reigning Bundesliga champions would love to appoint Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso, the man who looks set to dethrone them this season, but Liverpool are already in "advanced discussions" ahead of the departure of Jurgen Klopp. Emery is a potential plan-b, alongside former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and Stuttgart's Sebastian Hoeness. A return for Hansi Flick could also be on the cards.

Emery remains committed to Villa for now

In his daily briefing for Caught Offside, journalist Fabrizio Romano has given his take on the rumours linking Emery to Bayern. The good news for Villa is that the Spaniard remains "100% focused" on the club and isn't currently in talks over any other roles.

He said: “Some reports have suggested that Unai Emery could be considered as the next Bayern Munich boss. This would mean leaving Aston Villa managerless after two seasons in charge of the Premier League club.

“Honestly, I’ve zero on this at the moment, Bayern as well as Barça will be linked with many managers. I already saw many names around, but no decision has been made at all. Unai Emery is a fantastic manager, I think he has improved a lot in recent years but he’s now 100% focused on the Aston Villa project and he’s not speaking to other clubs right now.”

Losing Emery is unthinkable for Villa

It's vital that Villa keep Emery because, quite simply, he's the best thing to happen to the club in years. They have a chance to win their first major silverware since 1996 after reaching the Europa Conference League round of 16, where they'll face Ajax, and they could also qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 1983.

As you can see in the table above, Emery has overseen a massive improvement from last season after replacing Steven Gerrard in the autumn of 2022. Villa have been in elite-level form since he arrived – they amassed a whopping 82 points from his first 40 league games in charge – but it simply went under the radar last season because they weren't close to the top of the table.

Aston Villa hit the jackpot by selling “fantastic” ace for £14m

The young prospect left Aston Villa in the summer.

ByTom Lever Feb 26, 2024

Emery has led Villa into the top four with an attractive brand of football that has delivered 56 goals so far – an average of 2.15 goals per game. It's on course to be their best season in that regard since 1959/60.

With famous wins against Manchester City and Arsenal under their belt, Villa fans have been enjoying a dream season so far, and they won't want to entertain any thought of the project coming to a premature halt.

It briefly looked as though he would give up the game for a career in football, after he spent the 2004-05 season playing in goal for Margate.A prolific run-scorer in one-day cricket, he was perhaps unfortunate never to get a run in England’s limited-overs sides, having played for the Lions in 2010 before scoring over 1,000 white-ball runs across List A and T20 cricket in 2013.He took 50 Championship wickets once, in the 2012 season, but as his career progressed he began to bowl less and take his red-ball batting more seriously, making 1047 Championship runs in 2016.He was a regular in the early days of the T20 franchise circuit, spending winters in Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and New Zealand, and scored a match-winning 70 in Somerset’s win against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2011 which took them through to the group stage of the Champions League T20.He lifted a trophy for the club for the first time in May, having previously played in five final defeats, making 29 as Somerset beat Hampshire in the Royal London Cup.Andy Hurry, Somerset’s director of cricket, said that Trego would be “remembered as one of Somerset cricket’s great characters”.”This year we have seen the emergence of several young players and this has meant that Pete’s opportunities in the first XI have been limited,” Hurry said. “He obviously wants to be playing first-team cricket, which is not something that we can guarantee him here at the moment, and therefore we feel that it is in both the club’s and Pete’s best interests for him to consider other opportunities.”Trego said: “I understand the Club’s desire to give younger players an opportunity, and whilst I’m no longer going to be a Somerset player, I will always be a Somerset fan.”It’s been a long and fantastic journey. I’ve got so many wonderful memories, but that final one-day game at Lord’s has to stand out. Walking around the ground with the trophy and long-standing teammates such as Hildy [James Hildreth] was the icing on the cake of what’s been a great time in my life.”
