West Ham set to launch Alberth Elis bid

West Ham United are set to launch a bid in an attempt to bring Alberth Elis to the London Stadium this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Portuguese media outlet A Bola, who claim that the Hammers, as well as Brighton & Hove Albion, Celtic and Southampton, are considering a move for the Boavista centre-forward in the summer transfer window.

The report continues by stating that the 25-year-old would be open to a Premier League switch, while the Liga NOS side are also eager to sell the Honduras international in order to raise funds, with it being reported that an offer of €10m (£8.5m) should be enough to get a deal over the line.

Fans should be worried

While it is undeniable that West Ham are in need of attacking reinforcements this summer, with David Moyes currently only having the option of Michail Antonio as an out and out centre-forward in his first-team squad, fans of the club should be slightly worried if Elis is the man the club bring in to provide competition for the 31-year-old Hammers striker this summer.

The £3.6m-rated man did enjoy a fine season last time out for Boavista, scoring eight goals, registering six assists and creating seven big chances over his 31 Primeira Liga appearances for Joao Pedro Sousa’s side, as well as taking an average of 2.6 shots and making one key pass per game.

These returns saw the forward, who can play on the left, through the middle or on the right of a front three, earn a seasonal SofaScore match rating of 6.75, ranking him as the Portuguese club’s 12th-best performer in Liga NOS.

His Honduras teammate, and former Celtic star, Emilio Izaguirre, said of him: “He’s a very good, fast player. He’s very fast and strong and he’s good in the air. He’s played a lot of football and is good on the ball.”

However, with West Ham playing in the Europa League next season, as well as being linked with the likes of Tammy Abraham and Youssef En-Nesyri in the summer transfer window, the argument is not too difficult to make that the Hammers could do with the addition of a striker who is slightly more proven, as well as clinical, than the 25-year-old Boavista man.

As such, while a move for either Abraham or En-Nesyri may not come off, these are very much the calibre of centre-forward that David Gold and David Sullivan should be considering this summer, rather than placing their faith in a somewhat unknown quantity after a relatively decent campaign in Portugal.

Competition thrown wide open

Northerns and Southerns were the winners in the second round of the 2007-08 Faithwear Cup

Cricinfo staff29-May-2008The Faithwear Cup was thrown wide open after the second round produced wins for Southerns and Northerns, who had both lost in the opening matches. The results leave Westerns as the only one of the five sides without a loss to their name.Defending champions Northerns bounced back from their defeat by Westerns to record a three-wicket win over Centrals at Harare Sports Club. Boosted by the return of Ray Price, who took 3 for 24, they restricted Centrals to 172, and even that represented a recovery as at one stage they had been teetering on 13 for 4. At 75 for 6, Northerns appeared to be heading for defeat but Price (38) and Graeme Cremer (54*) put on 83 for the seventh wicket to steer them to the brink of victory.Tendai Machiri’s 53 was the platform in Southerns’ 25-run defeat of Easterns at Harare Country Club. Southerns made 164 in a laboured innings, but even that modest score proved too much for a weak opposition who had Forster Mutizwa’s career-best 49 to thank for preventing a complete rout.

Wolves confirm Sa signing

Lots of Wolves fans have been left to gush as the Midlands club confirmed the signing of Jose Sa via their official Twitter page on Thursday evening.

The Molineux faithful released an announcement video to confirm the capture of the goalkeeper, who comes in as the replacement for Rui Patricio, who has left to join AS Roma.

As per their website, Sa has signed a deal worth five years at Molineux, and technical director Scott Sellars is very impressed by the signing.

He claims that the former Olympiacos ace is in his ‘peak years’ at 28 years of age, and notes that he is ‘aggressive’ when coming for crosses.

Sa also has ‘excellent distribution’ and is a ‘pro-active’ player, and should fit nicely into the style of play set to be implemented by new manager Bruno Lage.

BCCI 'would like to fully support' Zimbabwe

In its first official reaction to the Zimbabwe issue, which tops the agenda for the ICC’s annual meeting in Dubai next week, the Indian board has said it “would like to fully support” Zimbabwe Cricket on the issue of full membership of the world

Ajay S Shankar28-Jun-2008In its first official reaction to the Zimbabwe issue, which tops the agenda for the ICC’s annual meeting in Dubai next week, the Indian board has said it “would like to fully support” Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) on the issue of full membership of the world governing body. Niranjan Shah, the BCCI secretary, added, however, that the board will go by the Indian government’s guidelines when it comes to specific cricket tours and interactions with Zimbabwe.”We are very clear that we would like to fully support Zimbabwe on the issue of full membership of the ICC,” Shah told Cricinfo. “We are aware that some member boards want Zimbabwe’s membership taken away, but we are with Zimbabwe on this. However, we also understand the positions taken by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Cricket South Africa (CSA) as they were prompted by the advice of the governments in those countries. We do not blame them as they are bound by what their governments decide. But our position is very clear on the issue of full membership and we would like to totally support Zimbabwe on that.”Shah, who will also be attending the Dubai conference, confirmed that the Indian board has not got any guidelines from its government so far on the Zimbabwe issue. “We will go by our government’s guidelines, which will be applicable to specific tours and interactions with Zimbabwe, but nothing has come so far,” he said. With the BCCI officially clarifying its stand on the issue, it becomes extremely difficult for the ICC board to decide any stringent action against Zimbabwe next week. A two-thirds majority vote within the ICC board – seven out of 10 votes – is needed for any resolution to be moved on Zimbabwe. That includes suspending them from full membership, which would see them lose access to a significant chunk of ICC funding and valuable voting rights. The ECB and CSA have suspended all ties with Zimbabwe cricket, and are pushing to shut the door on Zimbabwe but the BCCI is now expected to lean on its traditional vote bank of Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to prevent any such move. Duleep Mendis, the chief executive of Sri Lanka Cricket, told Cricinfo that they are “yet to take a final decision as all this happened over the last 2-3 days.”

Southampton linked with Yangel Herrera

Southampton have been linked with a move for Manchester City midfielder Yangel Herrera recently, and the Venezuelan could be a superb addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad this summer.

What’s the word?

According to The Telegraph, Southampton are expressing an interest in the 23-year-old, who has spent the last two seasons on loan with Granada in La Liga.

Crystal Palace and West Ham are also said to be interested in the midfielder, who could cost as much as £20m, as City look to raise funds in order to afford big-money moves this summer, with top targets Jack Grealish and Harry Kane both likely to cost north of £80m.

Would Herrera be a good signing for Southampton?

During his time at Granada, Herrera has made 82 appearances, contributing 10 goals and five assists, and was a key part of their run in the Europa League last season.

During the 2020/21 campaign, the Venezuela international would make 32 appearances in La Liga, contributing three goals and one assist to his name, averaging a solid 6.79 rating from WhoScored for his performances.

He was also very impressive for Diego Martinez’s side in the Europa League, managing two goals and one assist in just 10 appearances, averaging a 7.00 rating from WhoScored, which suggests that he would add some quality and experience to Hasenhuttl’s midfield.

Considering the Saints struggled last season in the absence of Oriol Romeu, adding more depth in midfield should be something of a priority for the Austrian manager this summer.

Herrera has won a lot of plaudits in the past, winning the praise of Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira during his time at New York City, with the Frenchman saying:

“He’s a tactically intelligent midfielder who is strong in the tackle and reads the game well. Yangel also has good passing range and spatial awareness, which is crucial for a player in his position.”

Therefore, he could be an excellent addition to Hasenhuttl’s squad both now and for the long-term future, so Martin Semmens should definitely look to bring him to St Mary’s.

Saudi Arabia finish at the bottom

Afghanistan’s lower-order batsmen ensured their side a third-place finish, while Bahrain salvaged the seventh position with a 99-run trouncing of Kuwait on the eighth day of matches in the ACC Elite Trophy

Cricinfo staff02-Aug-2008Afghanistan’s lower-order batsmen ensured their side a third-place finish in the ACC Elite Trophy after beating Nepal in a close game at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur. Mohammad Nabi and Samiullah Shenwari scored half-centuries in chasing a target of 211, after the top order collapsed to 88 for 5. However when Nabi fell, Afghanistan still needed 52 off 17.1 overs with just three wickets in hand. Shenwari played a patient innings and, aided by Ahmed Shah’s 27-ball 26, took his side to victory with only 10 balls to spare. Nepal had started well, led by Kanishka Chaugai’s 43, and would have posted a more challenging total if they hadn’t lost four wickets in the middle for 32 runs. Afghanistan used eight bowlers to check Nepal’s scoring, with Aimal Wafa being the most successful with 2 for 35.Bahrain, who had won only one out of their four group games, salvaged a seventh place in the tournament by trouncing neighbours Kuwait by 99 runs at the Selangor Turf Club. Tahir Dar’s unbeaten 51-ball 85, along with half-centuries from Azeem-ul-Haq and Mirza Yaqoob, lifted Bahrain to 328 after which opening bowler Halal Abbasi ran through Kuwait’s top order to reduce them to 48 for 5. And though Saud Qamar and Mohammad Ahsan revived the innings with a 95-run partnership, once Ahsan was dismissed in the 35th over, Kuwait’s chase came undone. The last three wickets falling for 11 runs, and the innings was wrapped up with more than 10 overs remaining.Saudi Arabia finished last after an abject batting display against Qatar saw them lose by nine wickets after being bowled out for 164 at the Royal Military College. Opening bowler Abbas Khan was the wrecker-in-chief, taking 5 for 20 – with four of his dismissals being caught behinds. Only three Saudi Arabia batsmen reached double figures, while four registered ducks. Suhrab Kilsingatakam and Hussain Anwar’s 98-run stand only prevented Saudi Arabia from getting bowled out under 100. Left-arm spinner Sardar Badshah broke their stand and dismissed them in consecutive overs. Qatar took only 22.3 overs to chase the target, with opener Omer Taj unbeaten on 82.

LFC fans bemoan journalist’s Chiesa update

A number of Liverpool supporters have bemoaned Fabrizio Romano’s update on the Reds’ hopes of signing Italy star Federico Chiesa.

Jurgen Klopp is hopefully eyeing up another attacking signing this summer, in order to make his squad even more formidable.

Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino will all be vying for regular starts next season, but an additional top-class option wouldn’t go amiss, with the former two set to be absent for AFCON 2022 in January.

One player who Liverpool have been linked with is Chiesa, who enjoyed an outstanding Euro 2020 campaign with Italy, winning the competition and scoring twice.

According to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, however, the Reds will not be signing the on-loan Juventus winger.

He is deemed ‘untouchable’ at the Serie A club and there ‘no chance’ of Liverpool bringing him to the club this summer.

ECB name Sri Lanka as Zimbabwe replacement

Sri Lanka will tour England in April and May in 2009 after England’s decision to suspend bilateral ties with Zimbabwe

Sri Lanka’s tour slots in the fixture gap caused by England’s decision to suspend bilateral ties with Zimbabwe and the cancellation of their 2009 visit.David Collier, the ECB chief executive, was pleased with Sri Lanka’s willingness to step in and ensure England will have a competitive series ahead of the Ashes later in the summer.”The strong and close relationship which we built up during our recent winter tours to Sri Lanka allowed the ECB, at short notice, to be able to approach Sri Lanka and confirm their availability for the international matches in the early part of next summer,” he said. The ECB cancelled Zimbabwe’s tour last month, minutes after Gordon Brown, the prime minister, told the House of Commons that he wanted the tour scrapped. The ban on a team from Zimbabwe entering the country also put in doubt England’s hosting of next year’s World Twenty20 next year, but as of now the issue has been resolved with Zimbabwe pulling out of the event.Sri Lanka play three three-day games ahead of the Tests series, followed by a warm-up one-dayer before the ODI series.

Rangers miss out on Harry Wilson

Rangers had been tipped to sign Harry Wilson earlier in the summer but Steven Gerrard won’t be reunited with the Welshman at Ibrox after he completed a move to Fulham recently.

What’s the word?

Rangers were heavily linked with the Liverpool winger in 2018, with reports claiming that Gerrard was very keen to add him to his squad having managed him during his spell working in the academy at Anfield.

When it became clear that the Reds were keen to cash in on the 24-year-old permanently this summer after a number of loan spells away from the club, he was once again touted as a potential option for the Gers.

Former Rangers man Michael Ball tipped his old club to make a move for the Wales international earlier this year, saying: “Steven’s got that connection with him. He knows of him, so that personal relationship could be a bonus. The money, we’re not too sure what they have to spend, so it all depends if any players move out as well at Rangers.

“If [Alfredo] Morelos moves on, the big money that they’ll get would give Rangers the opportunity to bring Harry and maybe a few others in.”

Should Rangers have signed Wilson?

Wilson has regularly emphasised his class in loan spells away from Liverpool but has never really established himself as a regular in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, perhaps due to the world-class talent that the German has available to him at Anfield.

Last season saw Wilson join Cardiff City on loan and he impressed with his performances in the Championship, contributing seven goals and 11 assists in 37 appearances and averaging a solid 6.96 rating from WhoScored for his endeavours.

It is therefore no surprise that he has earned himself a permanent move to the Championship this summer, with Fulham paying £12m to sign him earlier this week as they look to secure an immediate return to the top flight.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776”]

The “outstanding” winger – as hailed by Roy Keane – could have been an excellent addition to Rangers’ squad ahead of their upcoming Champions League qualifying campaign. Given Gerrard’s relationship with him, you could definitely argue that Ross Wilson should have acted faster to try and bring the Welshman to Ibrox this summer.

ICC panel to assess umpire review system

An ICC panel of experts will meet soon to assess the umpire review system used during the recent India-Sri Lanka Test series and decide whether it’s appropriate to implement the system for the Champions Trophy next month and subsequently, Cricinfo has lea

Ajay S Shankar12-Aug-2008An ICC panel of experts will meet soon to assess the umpire review system used during the recent India-Sri Lanka Test series and decide whether it’s appropriate to implement the system for the Champions Trophy next month and subsequently, Cricinfo has learnt.Considering that the Champions Trophy is starting in Pakistan on September 12, the panel is expected to meet over a teleconference to arrive at a decision in time. An ICC spokesperson has confirmed the development. It’s understood the system will be assessed by a sub-committee of the ICC cricket committee, and will comprise Dave Richardson, the ICC’s general manager (cricket), umpire Simon Taufel, Clive Lloyd, the ICC cricket committee chairman, Tim May, the chief executive of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations, Kumar Sangakkara, the Sri Lanka vice-captain, and Anil Kumble, the India captain.Taufel will represent the umpires’ views on the system and also present the feedback of the umpires who were involved with the implementing it in Sri Lanka, including Rudi Koertzen, Mark Benson and Billy Doctrove. May will present the views of cricketers worldwide on the system and Lloyd, a former match referee, will bring in a match official’s perspective. All the members of this panel, except Kumble, are part of the governing body’s cricket committee. The ICC spokesperson said Kumble was co-opted to the panel as he was “directly involved with the system, and would also represent the viewpoint of the Indian players who were part of the reviews during the recent three-Test series”.The ICC had implemented the review system after it was recommended by its cricket committee this May. It was initially expected to be implemented during the England-South Africa Test series but was initiated in Colombo instead, and has since sparked a debate on its effectiveness after a mixed response from the players.Kumble has asked for a re-look at the system while Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lanka captain who led his team to a 2-1 win this week, said that he welcomed the ICC initiative.
